But It's going to be hard for the writers. We need more lone Jack action with no one telling him what he can and can't do. BUT, we also need Bill, Chloe...and probably some others too. It's just that CTU is getting real old. I mean, how many times can this place survive an attack!!!!! ugh
On record as LOVING 24 this season...

I can't help it - I love this season. This show has more tension in 5 minutes than 10 episodes of Heroes (a mediocre show that I watch regularly because it scratches my Geek itch).

Someone (you listening Herc?) please explain to me how Heroes' mediocre acting, mediocre story telling and cheap special effects (e.g., 2 seconds of Peter and bro flying and watching Mohinder lean against a door during the climactic Sylar/Peter fight, etc) justify calling this a great show? Why can't we just admit that we're in love with the *idea* of a major network airing a show about super heroes while admitting the limp execution could use a lot of work. And Masi Oka (Hiro) has officially taken the title of Most Overrated Star from Entourage's, Adrian Grenier.

OK, this may have come off a tad more harsh than I intend. But when I see the geekasms being spewed over a mediocre show like Heroes (though I admitedly watch every week), I can't help but be somewhat disgusted by our standards. :)

I never knew something shocking was supposed to happen. How the hell do people come back from the dead? Jack whiping out 10 terrorists and hanging a guy with a chain without taking a hit? Ehhh, pushing it. People coming back from the dead? That's just silly.... although I'd love for Tony to come back somehow.

Heroes vs 24? At this point Heroes is clearly the superior product (but let's see if it can last more than another year). Jumpy scenes and adrenaline rides have taken 24 about as far as it's current framework can give. If SwissCheeseTU (and the whole 24 concept)isn't scrapped and reformed for next season it'll be no more dramatic than a fat man on a banana peel (cliche and parody).

They should take the show in a new direction. Why is it that LOS ANGELES is always the terrorists' #1 target? OK, maybe it's still too soon to use New York, but how about Washington? Chicago? Dallas? I think a new locale and new villains would re-invigorate the show. How about Jack vs. the mob next season? You could weave an assassination plot in there somewhere. You don't need terrorists for Jack to kick ass, but a new enemy would test his adaptability. Just some thoughts from a weary fan.

I remember a month or so ago, I was at a fan website which featured reports on episodes from some guy on the set who gets scripts and leaks them. (Apparently he's legit, b/c I checked some of the older threads about not-yet-aired episodes from months prior and they were accurate.) Anyway, at that point the final shot of the season was already written: A TBD character opens a door and says "get in Jack, we've got a lot to talk about" and Jack is totally shocked...and apparently fans are supposed to be, also. Even though at that point they didn't know who the 'shocker' reveal was, it was someone that longtime fans are close to / familiar with. Hence Herc's guesses/jokes that it'll be SP Tony, Naked Mandy, or David Palmer.
A revamp is long overdue

I've been a huge 24 fan for a long time, right from season 1 on it's original airing. In fact, season 1 was as close to perfection as I think any season 1 of a show could be - it was tightly written, intriguing, original and exciting. The Nina reveal totally blew me away, especially since she'd ALREADY been interrogated for being a mole and then vindicated (very clever), and the whole show was filled with suspense and twists. Season 1 of 24: 10/10!!

They were never going to capture that lightening again, but seasons 2, 3 and 5 were all great seasons too (despite a few hiccups). However, plot threads and story lines started to get recycled and push the boundaries of plausibility. CTU really need to tighten up their recruitment process, for example... and what's with all the nuclear bombs?? Season 2, 4 and 6 all have them. In fact, season 4 was utter shit and highlighted some pretty big cracks in the shows structure and writing process. Marwan's highly convoluted contingency plan, for example. I've not watched all of season 6 yet but based on reviews/comments it sounds like, overall, its worse than s4... fuck me!

This show could be revamped in many ways. Unlike "Battlestar Galactica" or "Jericho" it isn't tied to a location. Unlike "House" (for example) it's not tied to a specific character (I would have been quite happy if Jack Bauer had taken a desk job and handed the reigns to new blood). It's called "24" - providing it's set in a 24 hour period you can do what you want with it!

Season 6 could have been great - no CTU, no LA, no terrorist threat - just Jack escaping from the Chinese... but instead it's just more of the same: nuclear bombs, office bickering, boring relationship stories, blah, blah. The names and faces change but they're the SAME stories. A whole season of just suicide bombings would have been great - anyone around you could be a perpetrator or victim. But no. Nuclear bombs. Yay.

I appreciate it must be a hard show to write and produce due to its unique format but if they can't do it any more then, well, maybe they shouldn't...

They need to get out of LA and they need to never go back to the concrete fortress of CTU. It's really boring and predictable. Someone is a spy in CTU, the head of CTU will be replaced at somepoint in the 24 hour span, two CTU employees will make out in mid-crisis...etc. I've always thought it would be great to have a prequel season. In either season 1 or 2, it was revealed that President Palmer and Jack knew each other because Palmer had authorized a secret mission when he was in the Senate. Would be really cool to explore that story and it would be a great way to bring back David Palmer without some cheesy back from the dead horseshit. This show needs an adreline shot. Let's see something new within the format. There's plenty to do and they are making enough dough to shoot in cool locations so get on it.

a nuclear bomb goes off in LA, baeur's evil old man kills baeur's evil brother, and china, russia and the US gear up for a battle royale in central asia. so why is it all so underwhelming? i don't know, but it needs some kind of fresh blood. I read an interview with David Fury saying that he and Manny Coto will be in a position next season to take the show in interesting directions. Given how underwhelming Day 6 has been so far, we can only hope they succeed.

I have to say, I think one of the problems with 24 is that there are so many unanswered questions. If it were Lost, people would be griping about them until they're answered. With 24, you just accept it and move on.

Take season 1, with the questionable, shadowy figures financing Palmer's campaign, Nicole's rape, the involvement of Keith in her attacker's murder - were these even related? - it's a while since I watched it but I don't think these questions were entirely answered. I'm sure there are unanswered questions in each season, which could be tied together in some entertaining way, and which would also allow cameos from ALL previous 24 characters. That would be great!!

What 24 really needs, and has been lacking, is a series arc. Each season is self-contained with few references back to previous seasons, or an indication of something great waiting ahead. With so many back stories, characters and relationships to explore, it's a shame the shows reputation has become "same shit, different day".

24 is at it's best when it's a character (rather than event) driven suspense/action drama. 24 s1 struck me as Murder One with action. It's a shame they never continued like that.

After a whole season of "not this again" last week's episode was an exact replica of the Alexis Drezen scenario without the stabbing (they wouldn't do that cos the stabbing was given to Martha Logan). There have seriously been about six good episodes this seaon. Not good enough. The secondary story (always resevred for the White House) is rubbish now, and I guess this "compromising situation" is just another episode of the blonde girl not being able to get the guy to look at her PDA again for another hour. Last episode actaully showed Tom TWIDDLING HIS THUMBS in one of the climax windows. Seriously. And now we're two episdoes from the end of the season and he's still sitting in a van watching people have sex.

1) Let us give Milo a well-deserved round of applause for taking one for the team (i.e. us) by sacrificing himself so that the turkish delight Nadia might survive for another day, er, hour.

2) Well, now I understand why TPTB sent Bill Buchanan home for no good reason -- they wanted him to survive for another season.

3) That said, how fucking stupid was last week? I mean, seriously. You want your grandson, so you have Cheng send in an armed unit to CTU ... why? Did you honestly think it'd be easier to grab him from CTU than it would to grab him from his house? And why the hell kill Milo? To gain co-operation? Who needs co-operation, you're trying to get a person. What if they had already found him? What if he had already left? You find that out first, then you kill Milo.

4) Of course, that's not as stupid as sending out your Chief of Staff to run recon. Gee, I wonder if they did that to kill off the best character this season? C'mon, 24, shock me and don't kill Tom Lennox.

As for Numb3rs, it's a damn fine show but I do miss Larry, so I hope he's back. In his recent cameo, it would've been hysterical if he said "and this is where I was Chief of Staff to the President of the US" -- those who watch Numb3rs know what I'm talking about.

Okay, I could go without CTU next season if for no other reason than to skip the annoying computer jargon. Chloe: "Morris I need help backing up my protocol updates" Morris: "The packages are decrypted from division, you need to reboot your firewall paramters to get them to process" Nadia: "Chloe, I need you to run point on the field up by analyzing lines of code we recovered 6 months ago in real time with an operation going on in the field right now" If they could just skip the unnecessary computer jargon and have Chloe's lines be something along the lines of "Okay, I've got the satellite access" the CTU thing would be a lot less annoying.

I thought the biggest complaint for any movie that features IT or computer shit is that the dialog is retarded and therefore unrealistic. Did anyone see Hackers? So '24' has slightly more realistic dialog and it's too much techno-babble?

That's the thing Gonzo, the terms they are using are realistic, but they feel tacked on. It feels as though the writers pull out a tech manual, turn to the glossary and close their eyes and point. "Oh, 'networking protocol', how could I fit that into a conflict between Chloe and Morris. It's something that's been sticking out for the past 2 seasons for me. I'd feel the same way if it was taking place in the CTU cafeteria and there was all this dialogue from Chef Chloe to fry-cook Morris "I can't get the bread to proof, the yeast didn't have time to rise before preheating instructions from Division arrived"

But Day 6 is more or less an object lesson in how to do CTU soap opera very badly: (i) phony tension and pointless bickering (c.f. Milo vs Morris, Chloe vs everyone else, etc); (ii) the angst and drama of characters who aren't actually as engaging or as sympathetic as the writers seem to think (c.f. Morris and his drinking problem, Morris and his survivor guilt, etc); (iii) flat characters (Milo and, despite her hotness, Nadia). Most Days have their irritating CTU plotlines (e.g. the babysitter/codependent ex-spouse/schizophrenic sibling or offspring) but they usually manage to get the overall chemistry right. But Day 6 CTU just grates.

is right. After an 18-episode nuke arc, a circuitboard "crisis" feels 10,000 times less urgent/intriguing/involving. I liked the old formula for seasons 1-3, that is, start with a good arc for the first half, then pull the focus back and have the first arc actually have been part of a bigger, broader arc (second half)...i.e., Gaines kidnapping the Bauers was actually all part of Drazin's plan, the nuke stuff was actually part of Kingsley's plan, and the virus arc was actually part of Saunders's plan. They abandoned this format in Season 4 (which in my opinion was the weakest season before this one, albeit the Jack bank robbery was badass), and although I liked Season 5, I wish they'd return to the old format. Or "take the series in an interesting new direction" as promised.

cliffhangers and shocking events equates to good storytelling. A good story doesn't necessarily need to have nukes and rogue states and threats of war and surprise deaths etc. It does need to have strong characters, smart dialog, a solid and believable series of events and a core theme. As others have said/hinted, I wouldn't mind seeing Bauer go solo playing an "intimate" cat and mouse game with an equally strong, charismatic antagonist. I think a reboot of that magnitude is necessary to bring back some faith to the fans.

I could watch a whole season of that alone! Throw in Nadia, Lisa Miller, some oil and a stripper pole and you have a story arch that could go on for seasons! This whole thing really does write itself, so I don't see how TPTB are screwing this whole season so royally.

I don't hate CTU, I don't hate nukes going off on American soil, I don't hate international tensions and pending wars, & I don't hate that the leading character is immortal. I do however hate this season.

How could they have possibly screwed up this whole season even with all of the above as great workable topics? I don't know. But a season of hot naked chicks would fix it all for me (unless they somehow screw that perfection up too; maybe by throwing Chloe in to the uglify the mix...)

David Palmer! This episode we heard Giant Bauer (teh daddey) say that China would be way more powerful than the US very soon, imply that he's in business with the Chinese government...etc. Also, his armwrestling with Cheng over the phone made him sound like he's untouchable, either he's got balls as big as his son's, or either he has unreal backup. And remember he's the one who planned Palmer's and Tony's assasination... Palmer could have been behind it all, fearing he would stand no chance against China, and chose to get on their side. The problem is that the 24 formula has gotten stale. Outside of the first four hours, Papa Bauer stone-cold killing his son, and "Damn Jack", the show has been extremely cliched and seems to think the best way to rachet up the tension is to kill someone nonsensically. It's like they're so paralyzed by their previous success they're afraid to mess with the ol' tried and true.

And honestly, as much as I love Heroes, I'm willing to wager the same staleness kicks in by Season 6 for them as well. Hopefully TPTB at 24 *and* Heroes both learned a valuable lesson this season.

Heroes has an advantage over Lost though:a reset switch
by chrth
May 14th, 2007
11:28:57 PM
Lost can't say "Oh well, that didn't work, let's do something different with a different cast and storyline" -- the writers are stuck on the island with the characters. Heroes, by deliberately choosing to compartmentalize storylines, isn't so limited. Every season or half-season they can start from scratch. Granted, doing a complete character reset may not be a good idea (you want some continuity, I would think) but at least its a viable option.

Even 24 (the subject of this TB) is similarly limited by Jack Bauer and CTU. While you would think they are not as limited as Lost, TPTB seem to act like they are, only CTU/LA+White House Shenanigans is the Island. A mental island, you might say.

Is the plot somewhat recycled? Yes, but I say SO WHAT? A recycled 24 is better than any ep of Heroes with its mediocre writing, mediocre acting, and cheap special effects. I ALWAYS catch Heroes (scratches geek itch), but this is a mediocre show way overhyped due to the subject and circumstances (major network airing show about super heroes).

I'm trying to get the word out in the Land of Talkback and at least get a dialogue going. Seriously, I'm honestly curious - do people *really* think this is a well-acted show with great special effects? I don't think so. I think people are in love with the subject matter and they love the idea of a Big Three network carrying a show about Super Heroes.

I maintain the the acting and writing is merely OK, but acceptible. The special effects are terrible, which is unacceptable for a show of this type. Obviously this is my opinion and I'm in the *extreme* minority. However, I want to hear an honest defense of these aspects instead of hearing brainless geek splooging over a prime time sci-fi on a Big Three.

White Goodman: I maintain Heroes was NEVER that good...

12:13:58 AM
Heroes, at best, is as good as the worst season of Lost, acting and writing wise. It *only* edges out the worst season of Lost due to cheap special effects that keep hopeless fanboys like myself watching. ;)

Heroes doesn't deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as the first 1.5 seasons (or past half season) of Lost IMO.

I only make my repetitive posts to get a point across -- Heroes is NOT that good...really.

Fortunately, all that's missing is a real budget though. Mediocre acting and writing is OK if the special effects are GREAT.

I also think that I'm the only guy on Earth that felt the series was better this season episodes 5 to ~10 than the first 4, which to me were nothing more than cardboard cutout characters repeating simplistic political positions. . . . I call bullcrap. The first four episodes, the ones just about everybody liked, were the ones dealing with terrorism. The episode everybody thought would have been a good finale, the one where Jack beat the crap out of the bad guy, dealt with terrorism. Now we're dealing with some chip? And angst over Audrey? Or is it that kid? 24 sucks when you don't care about what's happening or where the story's going or any of the people. 24 rocks when you really love everybody and are afraid something terrible could happen at ANY MOMENT. 24 sucks when they pitch the real time concept and just make another action show. 24 rocks when they use the real time concept as a tool to make what's happening feel more real and visceral. 24 sucks when everybody you care about is dead. 24 rocks when they give you good people to care about and then put them in situations where they have to make terrible decisions. 24 sucks when everybody says what they mean in a boring way. 24 rocks when nobody is really saying what they mean, you're never quite sure who to trust, and people aren't given scenes with each other until they have a reason to be at odds. What they're chasing or fighting isn't as important as all of that stuff. I remember caring deeply when they were chasing a thumb drive with a little bit of info on it a couple of seasons ago. Right now a chip could start a war, and I'm just not caring. Is that my fault or theirs?

Nina or David Palmer, Or Terry Returning would make some of the dramatic events in past seasons completely irrelevant. Tony though, that would just redeem them from not only neglecting to give him a silent clock, but neglecting to have him stab someones fucking lungs out or at least shoot a motherfucker in their face and splatter their fucking insides all over the fucking place. That would have been a really touching and thought provoking way to end his stint on the show. Deadgar gets the silent clock but not Tony? FUCK THAT! Fuck that Putrid little Walrus fucktard. Morris is a superman... They obviously shot an outcome to his struggle and then cut it for time, I hate when they do that, as we saw him later milling around in the background like nothing had happened... They should have shown him snapping the Chinese guy's neck and then spitting on his corpse. Chloe sees this and is sooo aroused, she drags him into the bathrooms and they go into a stall, then you see Chloe drop to her knees... Later Morris struts around, slaps Nadia on the ass and kicks the division guy in the nuts, and takes over CTU and orders in cocktails for everyone... Everyone gets hammered and nobody bothers with the whole crappy storyline... At the end, Tony wanders in with his Cubs mug, fills it up with booze and says, "You'll never fucking guess what happened to me", and we fade out... There you go, rest of season sorted...

and I only had him slap Nadia on the ass, as when she gets drunk she makes out with Bauer's sister-in-law...

Yeah, I'm not incredibly happy with this season. Mankind's earlier assessment was pretty accurate I believe. And I'm still pissed that they killed off Tony. He fucking rocked (and he was a Cubs fan). They need to bring him back somehow. All this CTU drama is getting old and boring, and I don't give a fuck anymore. I remember when I couldn't fucking wait for the next episode...now it's to the point where I fucking forgot about it until my friend asked if I saw it. Then I remembered I have it TIVOed. They need to figure something out good for next season. Also, the whole "write as you go" formula blows...last season was when I first caught on to it, and this season it became painfully obvious. And yes, they need to re-establish the feeling of real time, 'cause they've sort of forgotten that that's a major part of what made this show so interesting in the first place. Not to mention Jack Bauer's ultimate badassedness and willingness to do whatever the fuck it takes. Oh, and one more thing...I didn't mind Milo, and actually didn't like to see him die (although I was kinda sick of his and Nina's boohoo side story, but that's the writers' fault), but the cool thing about his death was that he just fucking got killed hardcore style. Like, they also need to re-establish the fact that no one is safe (except for Jack, of course). Although, yeah, I'm still pissed about Tony...but what pisses me off the most is that they had him there, he got shot, came out of his coma only to get stabbed a little bit later. They could've at least had him go around kicking some ass then go down in a hail of gunfire while he takes down a platoon of evil fucks which saves Jack....no, instead he dies like a bitch. Fucking lame.

will take place in a new location, with possibly two locations involved next season...and a new cast. So perhaps no more CTU soap opera.

...that was one of the better episodes of the season. Obviously the whole "chip is going to start a war" thing is absurdly retarded. Especially given the Russian involvement in nuking California. Attacking the US would be complete suicide since even Europe would back us in that one. But I was liking the action. I guess I was just in the right mood for the show.

The Morris thing REALLY bugged me. I was waiting for Chloe to say, where's Morris, and then we'd find out he was dead or kidnapped again or something. If they had to cut a scene, they should have cut his struggle with the guard, not the freakin' resolution. It was just bizarre to see editing that sloppy on TV these days.

I'm really hoping that taking Josh away from Jack will be his final breaking point. I am so tired of him getting all business-as-usual within 15 minutes each and every time he gets fucked. To me, that's where the staleness of this show lies. Characters never grow (up or down, I don't care). And since Jack is the only character who lasts long enough to grow, his stunted nature sticks out like a sore thumb. They seriously need to reboot Jack.

Jack. Cheng is right there on the bridge. Shoot HIM!

But no,cant take half a sec to blast the bad guy. And Morris tackling some guy with a drill bit blasted shoulder was beyond ridiculous. Welcome to season 6.

Why's everyone saying Morris taking down a guy is ridiculous? He's a nerd, sure, but he was also the only living CTU employee over 5'8". Meanwhile Jack entrusts 5-foot-nothing 90-lbs-when-wet office girl Nadia to take out one of the men as part of his plan. WTF?

No mention of any "big twists" (and the promos love announcing those, remember the preview for the Air Force One downing episode? "...and the biggest twisty twist thing ever in the history of twists, you will literally not believe your own mind when it twists into your face. Next week!") so I'm still wondering if the dead character returning is another Vito-rapes-Finn rumour that's gained enough momentum to be considered fact. I hope it's true, bringing back Tony would get me unbelievably excited for Season 7, anything else just leaves me lukewarm.
Still, my original point was going to be... is that Bill talking with Jack in the promo? If so well done writers for not completely stripping the show of decent characters! I hope he's as casually dresses as last season when Chloe turned up at his house. More intrigue (well, as much as you can get for Season 6) - Cheng following Jack with a gun, poised for action? Chloe looking very, very worse for wear? Don't you kill her off, she hasn't done enough this season for it to be her swansong!

Nice to see someone else remembers Sylar being a former CTU desk jockey.
