BSG was the best thing to happen to sci-fi tv since Firefly, and they REALLY dropped the ball. Too many standalone throwaway and uneventful eps this season just about sealed it. Then, they makea gigantic big deal about Thrace dying, and she's gone for like three episodes. After a VERY strong start this season, it just died. At least I know it will all end. Right about now I hope they decide to go ahead and do a true follow-up to the original series. Hatch has proved himself- let's give him back Apollo.

Four seasons is more than enough to tell the kind of story they're trying to here. Any more than that and they're just stringing it out for the sake of it.

but even I have to admit that Season 3 was a bit off. The most glaring (annoying) thing they did was set up a love triangle b/w Apollo, Starbuck, and Duala. That annoyed the shit out of me!

Yes it was an uneven third season, but this show is still one of the best out there by far. This last season is going to be super intense/focused probably without any stand-alone/throwaway episodes. I can't wait for it start, but I would have been fine for at least 2 more seasons.

The one thing any show can do to drive me away is to start preaching at me on social/political topics the writers/directors think are important. They lost sight of the fact that a TV show is supposed to entertain the audience. The rapid decline in viewers should have told them back in Season Two that audiences weren't being entertained. But it's all water under the bridge now. Battlestar has been given it's death sentence and LOST has been renewed for three more seasons. ;)

Ohh well I suspected it very much but it still makes me sad to see it go. I don't know if they can't/couldn't have stretched it one more season but it stands as an awesome show and after its conclusion will be a benchmark for any series. Its bittersweet but the most important thing to me is that the writers get to do this exactly how they want it so the plot and story comes to the end at the right pace and how it should. Counting the days till that season four now. So say we all!

People suck. Someone always gotta be displeased about something instead of appreciating what is head-and-shoulders (not shampoo) above all competition. 'throw-away' episodes aren't 'throw-away' they are simply stories that do happen and are worth telling while not necessarily pertaining to the 'big' plot of things. Season 3 was definitely a great season and while different from the two first, certainly not so in a bad way. Love it or leave it, gents.

Battlestar is one of the best shows on TV without a doubt. This is perfect from them to wrap up. And by the way, Season three, while still being the weakest of the seasons, was still better than 99.9% of the shit that is usually shown on the boob tube.

The new "Battlestar Galactica" is remarkable for how it took an old program that was, for the most part, quite bad and found a way to remake it into something great. But as much as I love this show, its cancellation after season four is probably a good thing. If the people working on this show can properly end it on a high note while it's still in peak form, then they should do it. While season three had more than its fair share of "filler" episodes, these episodes were still a lot better than most of what's on TV. Even at its worst, it's still a lot better than where shows like "Lost" or "Smallville" are now, which is why it should end. If they had moved this show to NBC and it continued for several more seasons, then it would probably have ended up fizzling out before season five, and former fans would be wondering what happened to ruin this once-great show.

but not the money. He said he wanted to buy a channel I believe, have full control. And just put on quality shows. Give one to Joss, and so on... I think if there was a pay channel, that was a SUBSCRIPTION base only, so ratings would be crap, just subscribers, and the networked carried lets say... BSG, Firefly, Arrested Development, ROME, shows that CANT be made, but have HUGE followings... screw ratings, its like HBO, no one freaking watches the some of the shows on Showtime, but give the people a chance to PAY for it, and then charge $100 for a box set of the DVDs and you will be quality shows, that can run thier course, and they will still make money. Comments? THIS is what I think he blogged about.... and it makes sense... but who has this kinda cash? Anyone know Bill Gates :)

Remember this bit of advice from our good friend, Edward, before the series began? From this very website: A bit of sage advice from Edward James Olmos, who stars as Commander Adama in the new Ronald D. Moore-scripted Battlestar Galactica? miniseries (due to air on SciFi this December): "Please don't watch this program," Olmos advised fans of the 1978 original as he spoke during the current TCA press tour. "Buy yourself the new DVDs that they're putting out of the old episodes, and whenever we come on, just put that one in. ... Trust me. Don't watch it. If you're a real, real staunch Battlestar Galactica person, please don't watch it." "I would not advise [the fans] to watch this program. It will hurt them . . . "The intent and the way we've built the reality is very different from the reality of the original." "I know the Sci Fi wants to say that everyone's going to like it," Olmos said. They're not. This reminds me of all the talkbackers who said that the American "Office" would fall on it's face.

All shows have lapses in quality, but apart from a couple of episodes all of BSG has been fantastic. Diehard fans are anal. I'm a Brit but I love the US Office just as much. Do people really expect that old shows they watched decades ago will be resurrected exactly the same? BSG has been excellent in having some episodes that are satirical of current events but the messages are timeless. The quality should define your reaction, not your disgust that it's so different.

I love this show, but with just about every great American show it gets run it into the ground. End with the going is good. 4 to 5 seasons is enough. think back to star trek. DS9 4-7 good, 1-3 crap. same goes for TNG. the simpsons had their run from 3-8. seinfeld 3-7. sopranos 1-3. most shows really only have the ticker for 4 to 5 seasons max. and BSG hit the ground running. they didn't need to develop it over a few seasons as the mini series set it up very nicely.

They should find the earth of 2008; but this earth of 2008 is the same one which the original Galactica found in 1980. It's 28 years later. The new Galactica comes and sees the original one. Then they start to realize -- they are all Cylon clones, trying to take over the lives of the original Galactica. It causes existential angst with the Cylons, because they were made too much like humans; they became that which they hated. Then the Lords of Light comes and gives the new Cylons the options of becoming human. Real humans. Some take it, some do not and join in with Lucifer in a final conflict in which Earth is the prize.

That's part of its strength and its weakness. But I think, with the big reveal of the Cylon-human connection on this Galactica, the ultimate ending would be by idea: this was a Cylon-created Galactica to try to learn from and become like humans to wipe them out, only that it was too effective. Put it in with the real Galactica universe, and mix it with 1980. Have the two Galactica face off over Earth, with some humanized-cylons becoming human thanks to the Gods of Light; and then have the real Starbuck come and make the final decision which ends the show. It would work. It would make the whole story have that much more value. Make it so.

06:34:32 AM
The original is a fun show, but way to silly. Combining the two shows in the end would be a mistake. It's like putting Christian Bale's "Batman" meeting Adam West's "Batman." Both are great interpretations of the character, but putting them together wouldn't work. I'm sad to hear this is the last season. I thought that they would at least get 100 episodes for syndication purposes. Hopefully the powers that be change their minds and give it a 5th season.

The problem is -- this new series is all about Human-Cylons. The question remains: who made them, why were they made? Now you can say the original Galactica was silly. At times it was, but so is this new one. But it has an aspect beyond itself, and a crossover would be the perfect ending. It would explain all the cylons and all the reveals as having a point -- and it could be a way to raise the old Galactica from our youth to the Galactica of adulthood. It could and should be included, especially since it would be a wow-ending.

so long as they make season 4 super-tight. Unlike a lot of BSG fans, I liked many of the so-called filler episodes, e.g. 'The Woman King' was a good standalone ep that developed Helo & Boomer/Athena's relationship and the social background of the 12 colonies; same with the episode about Chief Tyrol and the unions. But there's so much to resolve about the Cylons and Earth that I don't think they can afford to waste a single episode on the weaker filler stuff, like the backstory to Adama's dead wife or Baltar's Oirish lawyer. Also, I expect that if season 4 does well enough, they can set themselves up for more TV movies.

First GILMORE, Now GALACTICA

May 11th, 2007
07:07:17 AM
Maybe if these both focused on good storylines and characters instead of their Get Bush/Save the Terrorists sidebars, they might have lasted longer. (HEROES take note.) Both of these were a year past expiration and dead series walking going in. When BSG finds Earth, will anyone care? Can they resist some sort of last irrational extremist statement? How about... Dems win, radical Islamists take over the globe, Hollywood and Las Vegas are burned to the ground, homosexuals and non-believers are put to the sword, women are burka suffocated chattel, and Libs' tongues are cut out. Now THAT would be 'fair and balanced'. ...P.S. Though not as deserved, I'll bet a no-prize that LOST doesn't LAST until it's due date, because it already has exhausted its credibility. So 'can' the countdown. They might like to last until 2010, but saying it don't make it so. And 24 is down 'til about half past 21:00. They'll be shopping for a safer time slot, 'cause the audience is fading fast with the quality. Next year is likely ITS last. Hey, all good (and bad) things must end. They had nice long runs, and soon will make room for more scripted 'reality' shows. Or, my pitch baby, AMERICAN ALLAH IDOLITRY. Where new North American zealots sacrifice themselves in creative ways for the faith. Grand prize of 72 palaces and virgins determined by home audience vote. Panel of Ayatollahs weigh in, with Osimon Bin Laden always saying he's seen it before in a lounge act or just wasn't painful enough. Fun for the whole family. Can't miss, I tell ya.

C'mon..Lost is awful...just not going anywhere...the fact that it is going to 2010 amazes me, because the show 'lost' the plot when they killed off Libby and Echo - idiots! BSG going season 4 makes sense...the show was dragging in season 3 - it just was...but hopefully this will convince the money TV men that quality shows WORK. Awful shows like Dresden doesn't work. Scifi-fantasy-whatever can only work when money is spent on the writing...never overlook the writers - you do so at your own peril!

...while I agree that an episode or two like The Woman King were a bit heavy-handed, I do not agree that the third season lost it's way. When BSG finishes its run next season, they will have produced unequivocably the finest science-fiction series ever, with Exodus Part II the finest single hour of science-fiction broadcast history.

Those of you who do not enjoy the social commentary aspects of the show need to reexamine your idea of science-fiction. Do you like science-fiction, or science-fantasy? If you like science-fantasy, go watch Stargate. If you like science-fiction, watch BSG. Examine the metaphor and allegory in the show. If it makes you uncomfortable, perhaps you need to reexamine your views of the real world.
and yes, BSG >>>>> Lost

BSG is constantly in a state of change. The characters and plot on Lost have grown stale from overuse.

Maybe if we're lucky, Sci-Fi will realize that at the end of this season they'll have 79 hours of BSG. A fifth season of 21 hours would put them at the magic 100 hour mark for syndication.

I like the idea that they are now letting series` end gracefully so let them find Earth, cancel it as a series and make a great BG movie every few years! It should be the patern of all great shows. We should be watching 24 movies in the theater instead of the horrible show it has become. Alias should have ended 3 seasons early and would have been a great big screen property, and on and on and on...

Well, I'll miss it when it goes, as I think it could have done more. It's not quite the show I originally thought I was getting in the miniseries or 33, but it still turned out damn good, even if it feels like it dropped the ball somewhere just after the Adama FTL Spectacular. Not sure why. But idiots like this on the IF site just don't know shit from wild honey: "Phew..........no more rape scenes, Galactica in name only will be gone. Let's face it, fans leaving in droves was sending a message. Perhaps, given time the tarnished name of BSG can recover.....and a Continuation of the original show can happen, complete with its morals, spirit, integrity, and family values." Gimme a fucking break.

A couple of months ago I would've said I wanted more but we're having to wait so long for the next season I doubt I could maintain interest for a 5th season anymore. Heroes completely lost all momentum by taking a mere 6 week break at an inopportune time. These people need to learn that you have to wrap things up a bit before taking a long break.

I wonder if Ron Moore has made an official statement yet.

Considering how they changed the 4th Season episode order from 13 to 20+ and made it clear that the new season would not start until 2008, I think this is more expected than a surprise. It's a fine choice which (once again) shows just how big this show's balls are.

Without a doubt, "Battlestar Galactica" has been one of the most intelligent and best written shows ever on TV (it hasn't always been perfect - but when it's on, it's ON). Not to mention the great ensemble cast that continues to elevate the sci-fi premise into an outstanding human drama.

While I'm sad to see that the finish line has been revealed, I'm very glad they know where they're going and know when to say, "We're home".

So say we all.

I hated the show to begin with. from the mini series it was unwatchable and never got any better, only more preachy. I hated the shaky cam. I hated that they changed all the black characters. I hated that the cylons were human looking. It just sucked ass and I am glad it's gone. Now they have a time slot to redo the Greatest American Hero and make that all dark and brooding and use it to make social commentary about how much America actually sucks and have Ralph use the suit to round up and torture those who oppose America. This show started taking a nosedive for me around the second part of that cylon virus episode. Not to say that season 2 didn't have a decent amount of clunkers as well. But it's been drifting aimlessly for some time and where as this was once my favorite show, I welcome this news. And I'm very happy to see they were given a full season notice instead of just pissing off all the fans. Maybe networks are finally starting to learn, thanks to the internet perhaps. And I was on the fence about watching (or watching regularly) next season, this move pulls me back into the fold for the conclusion.

Still, shows get canceled faster than I find new ones to replace them. I hope Sci-Fi has some idea of what it needs to do for the future. They need to given either Joss Whedon, Rocke O'Bannon or J. Michael Stracynski a show. They need a name. I tend never to give these other tiny Sci-Fi shows a chance cause they never last long. I'm still missing The Invisible Man and G vs. E. Get a good front runner and give him full control over the show and the audience is built-in.

He's almost always wrong about everything and only likes things from his awful '80s childhood. I was going to post my idea for a series ending, then got to this end of the talk back and saw several others have already done it. Anyway: The Battlestar Galactica reaches Earth, passing the runaway Space 1999 moon and the star with the Andromeda trapped in orbit around it in the way, arrives at Earth and collides with Voyager, where 7-of-9 assimilates the Cylons.

I heartily endorse the recent pattern of shows continuing for long enough to be satisfying, but bowing out before the audience gets too tired. Six Feet Under. The Sopranos. The Wire. Lost. BSG. Maybe if more shows did this then people would be willing to commit to the entire run. Rather than watching for a couple of seasons and wandering off as they wonder if it will go anywhere.

Heroes would do itself a great favour if, on Monday, the announcement was made that "There will be a maximum of 5 seasons". This would, of course, still give NBC wiggle-room to cancel earlier if ratings plummet. Committing to 5 seasons up front would be commercial madness, but setting a maximum would not.

I think such a tactic would boost audiences in the long run as people would be more likely to commit to a particular series. It should also boost DVD sales as a story that is satisfying and self-contained within a few seasons would be a very attractive purchase. This wouldn't be suitable for all shows, but a lot would benefit.

Some shows CAN go on and on...

Supertoyslast, I think Heroes is actually a concept show more than a character show, and as much as we might like a particular "Hero" on the show, this type of program can last for a long time, as long as the talent in front of and behind the camera is there. Everyone loves Hiro, but we'd love another quirky character if done right. The IDEA of a show is what gets stale, and THAT is the best reason for shows like BSG and Lost to give themselves the framework of a finite series.

the people saying 'good to not have it drag out' are ignoring the fact that it would never have dragged out, the ratings wouldnt allow it. we arent seeing a merciful act for our benefit here, keeping it short but sweet; we're seeing a cancellation before its time. there are many stories still to be told and its plainly obvious that 5 series was the goal, the number of episodes alone tells us that, if you choose to ignore the creators own wishes. scifi sat down and said 'we will not financially support a 5th season like you want; this 4th is your last one".

its not a shrewed 'prevent it from getting lame' move. its just been cancelled. the only good thing you can take from it is that with an extremely finite amount of time left to tell their story, every damn episode will be full fat, hi octane.

Instead of LOST's "We're telling a story in 9 or more seasons....but that's it!", they're doing what no other show has had the courage to do before - say "We'll do something spectacular, then quit while we're ahead."

Much as i think it makes sense for BSG to stop at 4 seasons (because the last thing anyone needs is for them to risk banking on a 5th season to tell their story and then get cancelled), let's not go overboard with the whole 5 seasons schmeel. Some shows have actually produced some of their best work after season 5: TNG, Buffy, Cheers, South Park. Fuck, even seasons 6 to 8 of the Simpsons (before it went to shit in 1997/98). Angel is another show that could have easily gone another 2 seasons. Not every show needs to end at 4 or 5.

As soon as the order went from 12 or 16 to 24 I knew it was over. The Kara story arc seemed to come on quick, as did the revelation out of nowhere of the Final 4 Cylons (assuming Kara is the 5th) which seemed to indicate to me that the writers knew it was time to put the show into overdrive. It was a great season, but the show is going to have some serious heavy lifting to get everything wrapped up. However, BSG is the most consistently excellent sci-fi television series ever so I have faith the series will end on a high note.

But chrth, if I read you correctly, you're saying that the head honchos are worried about revealing the core myster too soon, so they stretch it? I believe they just don't care either way...they're in it for the money and want it on no matter what. Chris Carter new he was in this situation and HAD to drag it on and on with some kind of end in sight. The recent LOST announcement is truly unprecedented. With BSG it seems like the writers are getting close to the ending so it makes sense. But it's never been a HUGE money making machine for sci-fi. That would be a different story if it were....

The most logical next step after BSG is gone is to remake Galatica 80. Break out that old "Earthquake" stock foto. In the amazing casting twist, make Doctor Zee female and have Dakota Fanning take the role. Hera Agathon and Nicholas Tyrol will all be grown up and the center of the story. Only Admiral Adama returns and will not have aged eventhough it is supposed to be 25 years later. Come on! It would be great!

Many pitched concepts end with the resolution of the core mystery. Sure, RDM & Co. may have a vague idea where to take the series after they get to Earth, but most likely they don't. Therefore, there is the fear on the creator's part that tying up the big plot will leave them without anywhere else to go. They could start doing "filler" eps after resolving it (or BSG 1980), but then (again) there's the fear the viewers would flee. So they move the "filler" eps to the middle of the show, stretching out the time until the core mystery is resolved.

What made X-Files great in the beginning was that their filler eps were in many ways better than the core eps. The other advantage X-Files had was that the primary subject matter, the X-Files division itself, was not limited to the core mystery. It was only when the core mystery started dominating proceedings -- and moved too slowly towards a resolution -- that X-Files lost its way. BSG and Lost don't have that luxury. Because they both have core mysteries that are upfront and in your face all the time, filler eps are just that: filler. And the more filler eps you have, the more the fans gripe you're not moving the core mystery forward.

Sci-Fi did it right this time, giving them a chance to finish things out. They saved themselves a big headache from fans constantly bitching about how they left us dangling. It give me hope that the networks are starting to learn from their mistakes.

At least now I will officially have no reason to watch the Sci-Fi channel anymore.

Can you even fucking imagine the utter shit that Flash Gordon is going to be? Lexx, maybe even Sinbad bad.

I feel that they have had an idea about where to end the show since the beginning. It's just that like any well written show controlled by a big business, that is until the recent announcement of LOST, they just don't know when they are going to be able to reach that end point, thus, they are blind and fearful of revealing the story too soon and having to create filler episodes. I guess I'm just assuming that the writers of BSG, after having done season 1, would have been comfortable knowing that it would only go to season 4 and then could have planned things accordingly. This is what the LOST writers have wanted, so I'm assuming that BSG is the same. But BSG has always seemed to fight for ratings so I just don't know. And in my opinion the reason the core mystery of the X-Files moved too slowly was for the same reason...Fox wouldn't let the show go and Carter wanted to go down with the ship. If a timetable had been set toward the end, the X-Files would have ended differently...

I guess I'm not up on my L337-lingo and Internets shorthand, IIRC. So WTF does OLMOS stand for? ROLFMAO, IMHO.

I swear, I don't know if I can stop myself from murdering the next delusional fanboy that says SCIFI or anyone else is seriously eyeing bringing Firefly back. Sure they are, and while they're at it, they'll also order full seasons of that gay X-Files spinoff "The Lone Gunmen," Chris Carter's failed Matrix rip-off "Harsh Realm," and an updated sci-fi take on The Golden Girls. I hear Blanche is a cyborg. Bitches, please. Let's be clear about this: FIREFLY SUCKED. Space cowboys my ass. Enjoy the DVDs fangirls, that's all you'll ever get. Deal already.

OLMOS isn't an acronym. Olmos is short for Edward James Olmos, the actor who plays as Admiral Adama.

Firefly is pretty cool, not "OMGZ!!1!!! AW3S0M3S" as browncoats chant, but -

IT. IS. FUCKING. DEAD!

- let it go people, you make trekkies look like sane, well balanced individuals.

You didn't like it? Fine by me, but it still tops DVD box set sales and still holds the record for most box sets sold. And I ain't no Browncoat, those are just the facts.

And SciFi can kiss my ass, I'm sorely pissed off about this BSG news. Anyone who says this is a good thing is retarded. Cuz yeah, having your favorite show get cancelled is always a good thing...idiots. They aren't even going to have enough episodes for syndication, guaran-fucking-teeing that the show will be dead forever. No more series, and no follow up films, just forgotten like all the other shows SciFi has cancelled, only those shows fucking deserved it.

Stop your bitchin about BSG ending too...

S1 and S2 were great, S3 was just so-so, and S4 really should be the end. There is only so long that this show can last. We don't want it turning into Star Trek where they find a new planet and a new race on their road to Earth each week, and there is only so much story they can pull from these people being trapped in those tin cans. I love the show, but better to end it on a high note than kill it slowly like X-Files, or equally horrifying, try to stretch it out and have it get cancelled with no real conclusion to the series. This way the writers can plan out the ending and the road to it. Look at Lost, doing the same thing. This is a much better way to wrap up shows. Too many series have ended just hanging, frustrating fans that invested so much in them.
For those that criticize BSG....U Dont Deserve it!

Instead, your deserve Star Trek a la Enterprise and Voyager. You deserve shows like Drive. The show was not perfect... but then again nothing is.

That would be awesome, and I'm not joking here...it would be geek overload. Or at least Dirk Benedict somewhere. With KFI in LA broadcasting the arrival of the fleet to the rest of the world.

episodes for syndication. Galactica will wrap up with a bit more than 40. At least for animated 1/2 hour shows that's all that's required. Could be different here...

I think "Battlestar Galactica" needs to wrap things up so it tells its story and ends. Like "Babylon 5" and unlike fucking "Star Trek." A good novel doesn't need 4000 pages to tell its story and, in the same spirit, neither does a good tv show.

Since only 22 episodes remain and the first two episodes are being released as a movie (with a simultaneous DVD release), I'm glad to know Battlestar's writers can wrap things up neatly, cleanly, and give us some serious drama as a result. Endings need to happen. In books, television, and movies. Otherwise events tend to drag on and on into stupid land. I'm very glad to know this won't happen with BSG. Looking forward to season 4.

...any of you think this is a good thing. I really can't. This is SciFi giving us another ass reaming. First they killed the ratings by breaking up SciFi Fridays, next they kill their overall ratings further by continuously releasing shows months and months after the Canadians and Brits get them, driving people to the internet instead of watching the shows later, and then they fucking blame us for the ratings dips and cancel shows. Fuck SciFi in their stupid asses, they are full of shit, and the above bullshit above no decision being made...yeah right, like we should trust ANYTHING those assholes say anymore? Fuck them!

I say we bombard them at ComicCon with nothing but "So who's the asshat that keeps fucking around with BSG?" questions. Fuck em, fuck em, fuck em!!!

I may be spoiling some peeps here, but I have to say it: we will never know the true date of earth when Galactica finds it. It would just open up a whole can of plotworms that I personally don't want to see. Like, Starbuck putting a bullet to Bush's head because he's a Cylon spy. Or Chief wrestling with a baby dinosaur. Or Helo disguised as a 50's homeless guy trying to save the whales.

There are some cutsie wootsie moron trolls here! This is a great show! I think it will probably end on 4 but you never know ( especially since the producer has said this isn't the final word ). It's just these idiots who think they look clever when they only look like little kids.
