All they need to do is use some cunning CGI to replicate Arnie's face from back in the day to create a Terminator army. Then use that age regression technique from X3 on Michael Biehn. Get rid of 'the nostrils' guy from T3 and give the job to someone who can play a baddass take-no-shit resitence leader. As a Terminator fan I hope they don't screw this up. And finally we might see a film set entirely in the future!? How cool would be an all-out war with T100s 1000s and X's? Get your hating out of the way now but try to imagine the fun that they could have with this film. :)

for "chance to reinvent" read "couldn't get any of the original players back". Restarting Terminator is a horrible idea. The original is an 80s classic, the sequel plays a little differently but is on a par with the first - i thought it was better for about a decade but as time has worn on i appreciate the simplicity of the pounding original all the more. But T3 sucked and Terminator without Schwarzenegger? Hell they might as well make a PG13 Die Hard, do a Snake Plissken film without Kurt, or...oh hell, never mind!

Too late for a Future War movie
by eg4190
May 10th, 2007
09:24:12 AM
It should've been made in 1996, when Cameron would have needed to use the same cool practical effects he used in T2. A cut-rate T4 made now is just going to have lots and lots of faceless crap CGI like we saw during the Future War scenes in T3. And they'd better not cast Michael Biehn. That de-aging effect from X3 was cool but distracting for a five minute prologue sequence. If applied to an entire feature length performance, it would be maddening trying to constantly find the seams.

Every Terminator movie needs 'SCHWARZENEGGER' in big letters on the poster. Arnold needs to be in the movie. Otherwise do NOT make it. But if they really MUST make it without him, pay him money to use his image from previous movies and somehow make it work.

If they're going to do future Terminator movies they have to scrap the time travel storylines. You can only send out more and more advanced terminators so many times before it gets plenty old. I like the idea of making a hard-R rated war film of humanity vs machines. I'd like to get a trilogy of films seeing the beginning of the war to the (finally) very end. Also, it could be done without Scwarzenegger but it'd be a nice bonus to atleast throw in a cameo.

It certainly couldn't get any worse. I honestly refuse to accept T3 as part of the Terminator trilogy. Way too silly and too much taken from the 2nd movie. Nothing original about a female terminator that's part T800 and T1000. Too much "Let's take it up a notch dude!!!", gimme a break.
What The Hell Happened To "No Fate But What We Make"?
by uss cygnus
May 10th, 2007
01:29:46 PM
There should have been no T-3. The whole message in T-2 was that "There is no fate but what we make", meaning NOTHING is inevitable (save for death and taxes). The whole mythology of the pair of films was shattered by "Judgement Day is Inevitable." Such complete and utter bullshit. They HAD to start the war. They HAD to have Skynet be built and become self-aware. They HAD to do some kind of morally relativistic bullshit about "See! the military and computer automation is EEEVIL!" There was a perfect symmetry to the two films that in no way needed the third. T4 is The Matrix Revolutions. Check, please.

I remember in T1 when Kyle was captured by the police and he was being interviewed/grilled. They asked him why didn't other bad guys come back, why did they only send one. He said (and I'm paraphrasing from memory) Because we had won, the machines had lost and Skynet only had time to send one machine through to change the outcome before the humans blew up the time machine. That's why I never really understood T2, they didn't really go into how another was sent. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Michael Biehn better fucking be in the movie. They dont have to show him close up or anything, but I want to see Kyle Reese being put into the time displacement machine and John Connor look at him with so much sadness because hes sent his dad into the past on a suicide mission to save his mother. They do this one little thing, maybe a tiny cameo by Schwarzenegger and I'll be happy.

by Doc_Strange
May 10th, 2007
05:17:04 PM
Despite his real life problems, he could totally pull it off. The fact that Nick Stahl was cast as Conner killed T3, but the movie itself sucked ass anyway. I say they cast Furlong and get a capable director and sci-fi screenwriter who'll do justice to the franchise if there's even a franchise anymore.
The original T2 script kinda answered fufu's question
by eg4190
May 10th, 2007
05:27:46 PM
There was originally an extended Future War sequence, in which we saw exactly how the Resistance defeated Skynet and gained access to the time displacement equipment. Kyle is sent back first, and John explains Kyle's fate to another soldier. John then looks at a bunch of T-800 models on an assembly line, trying to figure out which one he remembers from his youth -- an interesting idea, because whichever one he picks is the correct one. It is therefore implied that Kyle *thinks* there was only one Terminator sent back in time, because it's vital to his mission that he impregnate Sarah (this also explains why John didn't just send another T-800 back to 1984). John knew all along that Skynet managed to send two Terminators back, so he takes the necessary steps to deal with it. I'm actually glad they didn't include this scene, because it's too deterministic.

After a lot of bad press mostly because Cameron dropped out, because of the huge budget, and because of Ahnuld's age and politics, T3 was widely predicted the can't-miss bomb of 2003. Apparently that's as far as some TBers got, because it totally surprised on the upside with good acting from the non-cyborgs, a sense of humor, good FX that wasn't all CGI, a chase scene that put MATRIX to shame, and a surprise non-Hollywood ending faithful to the original material. Besides Getting 71% Fresh on RT and making almost a half billion worldwide, anyone who got past yet another Cameron no-show wouldn't flaunt their ignorance saying it sucked. Mostow did good, and at least he made it, which can't be said about Cameronwho any more these days. T3 was a worthy contribution to the franchise, overcame incredibly bad buzz, kicked ass, and was successful in a variety of ways. T4 should be so good.

I always thought the logical way to do a Terminator film completely set in the future would be to have John Connor mortally wounded in the beginning of the movie and his only choice to save himself would be to have his people put his brain inside of a T-100. So essentially the story would come full circle. John Connor himself would become the Terminator. But Arnold's too old and I don't think he could pull it off.
Do it right!

Either leave the Terminator saga alone, or do the shit right. Everyone has been wanted a "future war" movie since 1992. Now they have the technology to make it cool. I don't want to see anymore Terminators traveling back in time, getting sunglasses and wounding a bunch of cops. Future war or bust. I was SO disappointed with the brief, actionless future war shot in T3. So much potential...

The terminator. The humans in the story are bullshit no one wants to realate to the humans in this franchise because they are weak. Unless they are hatching a plot to get another terminator on the human side of the war i won't care for this film as much. infact its gonna suck watching a bunch of humans blowing up terminators. The only film that would be good for the future world of terminator is the one where the machines win.

by colivo

This storyline has been sitting out there since 1991, and I think they wasted T3 by doing a rehash, instead of jumping to the war of man vs machines. This story wont appeal to the masses, but that will make it better cause they won't cater to the kiddies like Lucas did with the Prequels. To the creators of this project, PLEASE FOCUS ON CHARACTERS!!!!! Sure you need cool action, and cool effects, but don't overshadow the characters. There are so many summer movies now that wow you with cool effects, and forget about the characters, and are forgettable years later.

Thanks for the reply, I've often wondered about that. So, to clarify, Skynet sent back the first terminator, then the resistance got to the time machine and sent back Kyle, then the T-1000 somehow overcame the resistance, reprogrammed the time machine for a later date and went back, then the resistance pulled itself back together and sent back good-guy T-100 to help stop the T-1000? Then somehow the girly terminator went through and yet again the resistance sent another T-100 back to help? You know thinking about it that way, it's probably good they kind of glossed over all that. PS. The only bad scene that bothered me in T3 was when she took over the cars with nanobots? and had them chase Connor, they weren't even automatic cars, some were stick shift, I call b.s. on that. They could have easily had humans chasing them via an APB and came out with the same effect without being stupid.

In the Terminator 2 arcade game, the time machine belongs to SkyNet, and it's the resistance which somehow hijacks it in order to send the T-800 after the T-1000. That "somehow" in the arcade game involves dozens of quarters and assloads of bullet and rocket attacks at enemy weakspots. :P Anyhoo, a Terminator set in the post-apocalyptic future is what I've always wanted. But setting a story in a weird sci-fi world is usually a bad idea when it comes to mass appeal. Terminator movies always set things right in modern day stuff. But, maybe there will be lots of settings in destroyed major cities. That would be cool, watching the Resistance battle Terminators in a nuked Los Angeles, with ruined landmarks and what not.

Show me some mop-up action by SkyNet. #2 would jump a few years later showing the Final Battle and Man's Victory over Machine. It could even show John Connor or his wife taking out the last Super-Duper-Duper Terminator. Or the first Organic Terminator. Or tie it into the Matrix with SkyNet developing the Matrix and battery power....

the Terminator movies are basically DOOM. Re-booting or re-imagining a tired franchise sounds, well, tired. This what happens when hedge funds get into the movie business, which Halcyon basically is. They're like Legendary Pictures (that financed SUPERMAN RETURNS); it's private hedge fund looking to strike it rich in the movie business by trying to revive old franchises. It's what has been done in the corporate world the past few years: private funds buying up once profitable but tarnished or fallen brands.

Specifying Batman, Bond and maybe Hulk as the successuful 'reinventions' is a great swipe at all the many times that idea's failed (Superman, Apes, Kong, etc.) Still, a total recasting of Spider-Man might reinvigorate that failed franchise.

I'm glad I read/skim entire threads before I post, I was totally wondering about "RagTag" as a street game, sort of a cross between tag and keep-away. But it's been covered.

with the Sarah Connor Chronicles?

On the Kids WB @ CW, the Legion of Superheroes go back and pick up young Superman after he's designed a costume but before he's gone public in it, as he's getting ready to move from Smallville to Metropolis. The year he spends in the future gives him the training he needs to be a public costumed hero. So it's the link between the end of "Smallville" and the start of "Superman: The Animated Series". On "The Batman" season finale (series finale?) J'onn J'onzz approaches Batman to join thier fledgling 'league' (apparently in the works since Smallville) and he joins, linking The Batman to the beginning of Justice League/JLU. Meanwhile, it's been informally established that the Teen titans series was set a few years between Batman and Robin: TAS, and the JLA/LJU shows. (Robin os more confident and capable on Titans, supporting characters and villains who appeared on both (Aqualad, Dr. Light) are shown as older on JLU).

Sorry to bore and non-comic-geek Terminator fans, but my point is, it's fun when various versions of a property have at least an informal but logical connection. And if being a sci-fi geek isn't fun for you, you;re doing it wrong.

If we have any fan writers here, someone needs to write a fan-fic in which Desmond (visions of the future) and Allison Dubois (precognitive dreams) see a future in which Superman, Dr. Who, Sam Beckett, the T-100, the guys from The Time Tunnel series and Ando all cross paths. Let me know where you post it when it's done.

the first reviews on Shrek 3 ain't exactly enthusiastic. Here's a great idea. Do something ORIGINAL, that isn't based on ANYTHING ELSE. Like maybe roll the dice on a spec screenplay. Remember those? How we got stuff like the first Lethal Weapon. American Beauty. We may well be reaching the point as an audience where we we'll reflexively (and not just the folks on AICN, but audiences in general) recoil in horror at the prospect of yet another bloody re-imagining or sequel.

The rights got sold off for an undisclosed sum, which means a huge fucking sum. And the best way for them to recoup their investment? You got it, appeal to the kiddies. You wait, soon they'll be a Terminator cartoon, a Terminator cereal. The Terminators will therefore only stun their human enemies with tazer guns; will never hurt the general public of kill a dog, or steal a policeman's bike, and never, ever say 'Fuck you asshole'.
T1 wasn't deterministic

There was an exchange between Reese and Sarah Connor which went something like "you're from the future?" and he answers something like "well, one possible future. I'm just a soldier don't ask me how it works." It was clear from the first movie that the future was not inevitable. They just made a more blatant deal about it in T2.
