As to why DC "don't get it", some people at DC very much do get the good Captain...Judd "I like to break characters so I can remake them just because I'm bored and lazy" Fucking Hack Winick is not one of those people though. And sadly he's the guy with the keys to the Marvel Family characters at the moment. Bring back Jerry Ordway I say.

A number of characters are intended to be a certain ethnicity or work best if they were a specific ethnicity... While others simply 'defaulted' to white due to social conventions.

John Shaft is black, as is T'Challa or Ororo Munro...

Bruce Wayne's family history keeps him white, really. However, given the circus tradition, could Dick Greyson not be part-asian?

Superman could be black or physically similar to Earth hispanics. He's an alien. Nothing about him requires he be white.

Given that a modern-set Captain Marvel flick would have Billy born in the 90s, he could be ANY damn race or mix thereof that could reasonably have the last name Batson.

And making him gay is not the same as changing his skin color.

The Wayne family have a long history in Gotham that would not be believable from a non-white family. He stays white.

Superman is an alien, but his human side is that of a Kansas farmboy and to many the ultimate symbol of America's good-natured desire to safe-guard the world benevolently. That no longer REQUIRES a white guy.

And as I said above there IS tradition and purism, and I respect that. DC should not retro-color their people. But there is room for taking a new look at an old character, provided it is done skillfully.

I'm not advocating anything so drastic, as a black Lex Luthor. But if Denzel wanted to shave his head and play him, I'd be excited to see his take.

These are FICTIONAL characters and we should be open to the freedoms that come with that.

And finally, I am normally as kind as I can be on talkbacks, as those who have become used to seeing my name can tell you. But lumping sexual orientation and race together is FUCKING STUPID. They are distinct traits of humanity. Stop divinding America into "straight and white" and "other", you idiots!

In a nutshell, I am not exactly advocating drastic changes, simply open to them should they arise and am not offended or 'up in arms' about it.

Back on topic, I absolutely do not believe that The Rock's mixed ethnicity disqualifies him from the role of Captain Marvel any more than Dean Cain's did as Superman or Brandon Lee's did as The Crow. You will also notice, however, that I cited Wharburton as my favorite physical match, with Brendan Frasia cited as my second choice. I am simply accepting the Rock as a fine alternate choice and one who could generate excitement (and funds) for a project that will need both to succeed.

I do not, myself, think our oppositional POVs are issues of right or wrong. Just different.

I would buy the Rock as Black Adam. No problem. It's a skin thing, yes, but it's also that Warburton has the EYES for Captain Marvel, and the CHIN. He would be perfect, while The Rock would only be close.

Well, allrighty, but you see... My personal criteria for defining a good comic book movie is one that is faithful to the original source material. Which is to say, takes key plot elements from published comics, Does not change the key characters costumes, names, Modus Operandi, motivations, origin or personality. Does not deviate from what the character would or possibly could do in the comics. And that has NEVER been done 100%. NO one fits that description. It's like saying No One can make a good superhero movie because no one ever has.

Still, it's as good a rule as any. Having a property written by the best comic book writer in the world doesn't help. (see any Alan Moore inspired film project). Having an enthusiastic comics geek to write and direct doesn't help (witness - or don't - Kevin Smith's "Green Hornet" non-starter.) The first TMNT flick came close, but that was schizo; closely based on two conflicting versions of the property, with elements of both the B&W comic and the animated series.

But Vern, why the "Give up,. guys" Fageddaboudit attitude? It's fun to speculate that with the right casting a genre film might turn out good. That's at least partially what AICN is about, or so I mistakenly thought.

That out of the way, Warner's should spend however much it takes to fuck Marvel Comics army of lawyers and get to call this film Captain Marvel and not Shazzman or Shaz-bot. The story's not about the wizard. That would be like calling Star Wars "Obi-Wan". (Although I'm flexi on that point: The Wizard Of Oz isn't really about the Wizard either.)

I stand by my speculative dream cast reposted above, with thanx to Ando the Poozer for the Warburton as Marvel nomination. But I see NO reason why Dwight Johnson couldn't play Captain Marvel. (Comics/sci-fi geekdom and racism may not, unfortunately, be mutually exclusive. but anyone wanting to see a film with an all caucasian cast where the good guys wear white robes, they should just watch Star Wars over and over again obsessively. Oh, wait, they already do.)
