The film ends with a Mexican standoff. Thunderbolt Ross and a mortally wounded Abomination/Roth have guns trained on each other. Hulk/Norton aims his gun at Ross. Betty/Tyler stands in the corner and makes off with the cash after everyone shoots everyone else. Sweet.

Cast is good, but so was the cast of the original Hulk. Wish they would have just continued with the same cast, just get a new director, make the Hulk smaller, and give him a good villian to fight. Abomination sounds like a good one. Oh, and have Hulk say "Hulk Smash!!"

May 9th, 2007

We can complain about what went right vs. what went wrong with EVERY adaptation that's out there. "Hulk" did not make a lot of money like "Spider-Man", even though it's a well known character (i.e. the 70s TV show). Hence, a return to fugitive Banner and more "HULK SMASH", rather than the "daddy doesn't love me" stuff (which I enjoyed). Hulk is a tragic character anyway, not a spandex clad superhero. So hopefully, that will come through with this as well. Just end it with Norton walk down the highway with his thumb out and cue the old TV show music. People will cry.

Now that I got your attention: Tim Roth usually does a bad job when performing at a Hollywood picture instead of doing more art-house flicks (or anything at all with Tarantino), and with this recast this Hulk movie feels more like a direct to video release (thus my Inspector Gadget 2 reference). X3 was a monotonous, plotless mess if I ever saw one. And of course I'll still pay for any other X-Men-universe flick they do because I is a tool. Anyway I'm...hesitant about this project because 1. X3 writer (*puke* what a mess! The last two-thirds were all fighting and Dark Phoenix could've/should've been the whole movie!) 2. Louis Leterrier who hasn't exactly proven himself of cinematic artistry, i.e. Brett Ratner #2. I'd rather have a movie take artistic risks and totally miss the mark like The Hulk than the blandness of X3. Comic book movies should be anything but bland.

Zak Penn writes horribly cheesy dialogue (Fantastic Four anyone?) but their are often cool ideas in there. The Transporter had great action but were mostly dumb. Louis Leterrier seems like a good action director with something to prove. It could work for HULK because at this point we want ANYTHING but a serious Hulk. It didn't work for X-men but it work for the HULK. The cast is great. Love Tim Roth, Ed Norton, and Liv Tyler, and she is much hotter than Jennifer Connelly's hairy eyebrows.

by Immortal_Fish
May 9th, 2007
05:55:43 PM
I have different problems with Spider-Man 3 than most, evidently. In fact, I have the same problem with Spider-Man 3 that I have with nearly all comic movies.

THE FUCKING EGOS OF THE ACTORS INVOLVED.

How much screen time did Spider-Man spend actually wearing an intact mask, sans tears? 3, perhaps 4 minutes?

Many of you have much to bitch about with FF1. One of my gripes was how Doom turned Chiklis back to pink for no other apparent reason other than to put his face onscreen for movie goers to remember what he looks like.

I thought Ghost Rider was pretty damn faithful to the comics. But toward the end, Cage was lighting up his head left and right like a Bic lighter, right down to the end where his only his face is in the sunlight, while the rest is all Ghost Ridery. Ridiculous.

Ever play the Daredevil drinking game? When someone other than Matt takes his mask off, you drink. When Matt himself takes his own mask off, you drink twice. Why? Because he willingly unmasked that sparingly by comparison, which was already frequent enough! You'll be blitzed long before the showdown with Kingpin.

Lastly, Topher Grace, Topher FUCKING Grace, as in, "Who the hell is Topher FUCKING Grace?!" Yeah, that guy. Even that no-name gave more head than Venom.

Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky is NOT good news. I have two predictions, one of which will doubtless come true: 1) We won't see any Abomination at all until the last minutes of the final reel, or 2) He will change back and forth ala the video game Ultimate Destruction, which means the character will hardly represent his pulpy roots.

I was intrigued by the casting of Norton, since Hulk is one of few characters you can play the "See? IT's me, ME!! playing the hero, you little audience people!!" game. But Roth as Abomination is bad news. His ego won't give the character enough time to shine on its own, similar to the Creel, Zzzax, Glob hybrid from Ang Lee's flick.

Abomination was one of the first, "Look! I'm just like the hero only I'm eeeBUL!!" type characters, predated by only Bizarro, Sinestro, and Black Adam. Perhaps a few others I forget, but they're few.

More importantly, Abomination distanced himself from being a carboncopy Hulk; an anti-version of the hero by introducing the twice as powerful, unchanging, all mindless (vs. Hulk's semi-mindless) tenets of the character. Scroll up and you'll see my post about my concerns here. Can't help but think they'll 'reimagine' a character that need not be reimagined.

I'd rather see a noble failure (though I'm not convinced Hulk was - I thought some of it was pretty brilliant. Not the Hulk dogs, of course) than the "throw darts at a board of plot points and characters" shit fest that was X3. I still think X-Men would work better as a tv series than films. But what do I know. I'm probably the only person here that really liked Superman Returns.

And after the Hulk Dogs I am gammaed out. Choose something non-gamma for him to face, please!

Roth will play, that is. He'll have heard of Banner's works and will try to recreate the events, only in attempt to correct the involuntary change back, yet this will lead to him being disfigured. Or, he'll be a former understudy or lab partner, someone who was picked over in the bidding process, etc., thus giving him the 'hatred motive'. Ugh. So very fucking cliche. At this point, I'm more inclined toward happenstance plot convenience, ala Brock in the church.

...as gammarific as the source material. It spares you from having to explain origins twice. Besides, most of Hulk's rogue's gallery stems from gamma irradiation. Honestly, I don't have a problem with this.

Now, you could divert from this, by having the Leader (another gamma spawn, I grant you) invent stuff for Hulk to fight, or the Hulkbusters themselves. But even if you went with the latter, you should still throw Samson in there to act as Shield's conscience.

So weird. I was just thinking about Tim Roth yesterday.

I was wondering where he had gone off to. It was as if Tim Burton killed his career. He was in Planet of the Apes, then he disappeared off Hollywood's radar screen. Glad to see him making a comeback. Interesting cast so far - can you say GRAVITAS???!!!

Really. I think the darker shade, pointed ears, bulbous chin, bulbous scalp, slitted cat-eyes, three fingered hands, three toed feet, and scaly plate set him off quite a bit. But let's compare...

Venom looks like a musclebound Spidey with a Kiss fetish.

Bizarro looks like Supes with eczema and a logo spelled by a 2nd grader.

Black Adam looks like Captain Marvel with a black outfit and Soul Glo hairstyle.

Not quite seeing the 'looks too much like' angle here.

Edward Norton repeats what he's done in the past, remain a control freak and go behind the director's and writer's backs and make the movie his way. Hey, if The Illusionist and American History X is any indication of Norton's behind the scenes talents, then this has a slight shot of being good.

Not because Roth is a bad actor, he's anything but (usually), but because anytime that Roth gets into one of these big budget popcorn movies he starts hamming it up like all fuck. Remember Planet Of The Apes and Rob Roy? Makes me nervous he'll do exactly the same thing here, especially under a director who's not exactly known for his dramatic skills in bringing the best out of actors...

Personally I would have gone with someone like William Fichtner

Zak Penn is not that bad...
by JimmyLoneWolf

...in fact, he's actually done some pretty good work!

And he didn't write Fantastic Four...he only contributed dialogue to the VIDEO GAME...not the movie itself.

Yeah, he wrote Last Action Hero (which I think is unfairly maligned) and Elektra...but he also wrote X Men 2 AND he wrote and directed the wonderful Werner Herzog mockumentary Incident at Loch Ness...and if you haven't seen it, rush out and do so...its a lot fo fun and Herzog is a riot. Think Curb Your Enthusiasm meets Spinal Tap...with about 5 minutes of material that doesn't really work. That isn't much for a 95 minute movie, and the rest of it is great.

So cut Zak Penn a break. He's never really gotten the chance to show us what he's capable of (most of his screenplays are co-written), and the fact that he thinks highly enough of Werner Herzog to create an entire project around him proves he's about more than getting laid and scoring bank (a la Brett Ratner).

I for one hope this is the project that elevates Penn to the big time. But if it doesn't, I'll still be there for the next film he directs...why wouldn't I? Herzog's in it!!

Hulk Will Smash Puny Mr. Orange!

Hulk isn't afraid of Reservoir Dog! Hulk is the strongest one there is! Hulk will smash puny Reservoir Dog with rolled up newspaper and rub his nose in poo!

Puny talkbackers try to trick Hulk. Tell Hulk that Mr. Orange is playing Big Ears. Big Ears isn't orange. Big Ears is green. Hulk is too smart for puny talkbackers.

Hulk thinks that Hulk and Big Ears should team up against Shiney Board Man, who has movie coming out. Hulk has fought Shiney Board Man, and was in team with him. Big Ears fought Shiney Board Man in Shiney Board Man's own comic book, which sucked gamma bombs.

And finally, Hulk wishes puny talkbackers would shut up about Liv Tyler Betty and Jennifer Connelly Betty. Like puny talkbackers would have a shot at either Betty...

Cilian Murphy won't be coming back as the Scarecrow for The Dark Knight. I didn't need him to have a full-on role, but a cameo would've been nice. Just something to remind us the Bat villains aren't getting killed off like every other comic book franchise seems to do.
Zak Penn didn't write Elektra or X3 by himself...
by JimmyLoneWolf

He collaborated on both of those screenplays, but he's the only writer (aside from Jack Kirby and Stan Lee) on The Incredible Hulk, so this will be a good indication of his talents. Its important to remember, however, how important the director is on these kinds of movies.

There are different schools of thought as to why X3 was so bad. Some blame ratner, some blame Penn, some blame Fox and Tom Rothman. I'm inclined to blame the first and third parties most heavily...Penn was simply a holdover from the last film, and since that film was easily the best of the X Men series, I don't get why so many people here seem to think Penn's involvement is a harbinger of failure.

Take a look at his screenwriting credits, even films like Behind Enemy Lines and Suspect Zero aren't entirely his work...this guy deserves a real chance after his Herzogumentary, and its obvious he has a lot of passion for comic books.

A good screenplay is essential, but a film like this (and X3) rises and falls on the efforts of the director and the studio that hires him. X3 was a rushed project that disrespected fans and instead tried to end the franchise to make way for lower budget (and thus more profitable) spin-offs. Tom Rothman is a piece of shit, and Brett Ratner deserves to be tarred and feathered for being his go-to gopher. But Zak Penn was on board because, well, he co-wrote X Men 2...don't crucify him for it.

Hey, if Penn's projects turn out bad, I'll be the first to tell it like it is. I just don't think he's shown us what he's capable of, and I think we should at least give him the benefit of the doubt. Whats wrong with that?

It will be better than
