I'm sure they're paying him well for his troubles, though. I'm looking forward to this one, although I'm also bracing myself for chaos. So many big films these days seem to big, noisy, cluttered messes, and it's making me feel old. It used to be old fogies complained about the young 'uns and their rockin' and rollin' music, but I reckon our generation of old gits will mostly be moaning about shaky cameras, too many cuts, and too much damn CGI all over the place. Still, I want to see how the whole thing ends, and I do love Mr Depp as Jack Sparrow, so I will be handing my money over to that Bruckheimer fellow as soon as possible.

Kirsten Dunst was actually very unlikeable to the point of annoying, Tobey Maguire dancing... the whole cinema squirmed in their seats. So Orlando and Keira can't act that well but everyone else involved is of such a high calibre that Pirates 3 should be good (and pushing 3 hours long...sheesh)

I couldn't believe the 2nd one; self-indulgent stupidity. Everything was so bloated that the story was diluted. I didn't care about nobody or anything. I was disappointed in the writing, too. The first one had a sense of reality, whilst the second one banished all that in favour of extreme fantasy and over done action sequences; it broke its own rules. Even though audiences want to be whisked away, you must adhere to the rules and play within them. I hope the third one redeems, but I can't see it because it was shot back-to-back. :(

Something doesn't sound right with this article... It all sounds like you're trying to be as nice as possible even though deep down you know you weren't as excited or impressed by what you saw as you expected. Considering what a massive deal that should have been, were you a bit disappointed Mori? Either that or you're still recovering from your jet setting ways and just didn't have the enthusiasm we're used to. either way, I don't have high hopes for this one now, except to see what Chow Yun Fat does...

too much CGI can ruin a film eventhough spidey 3 had many other faults much of the CGI was all over the place and you just could not see what was going on. the first two Pirates films have had a good balance that served the story and Davey Jones is the best CGI since Gollum for being a character that the audience could believe in. oh and apparently the biggest laugh in Spidey 3? 4 fanboys in front of me who were in hysterics when peter called his landlord Mt Ditkovich (sounds like dick hur hur hur pl-ease)

Randomness: I was on a bus this weekend and a girl saw an Pirates 3 ad at a bus stop. She started shrieking in the back of the bus, saying, "OMG ya'll. OMG ya'll. Is there a new Pirates movie out this summer?!? OMG I had no idea. OMG. OMG. I'm so excited." Everyone on the bus started nodding. This is going to be a huge movie.

Loved both films...and I'm really looking forward to the third. I agree that these films are the BIG summer blockbusters for our time. I mean, the toys, the merchandise, the cliffhanger of Part 2...isn't anyone getting Star Wars thrills here? No, it's NOT Star Wars, I'm not about to be that bold, but it IS the same excitement, THE trilogy for the new generation. And it's Pirates and it's Disney. But my real excitement is knowing that my all-time favorite Pirate will be ARRRGGGHHH-ing again on the big screen. Captain Hector Barbossa. Barbossa has been described as being so vicious and cruel, that "hell itself spat him out" but that's just old sea-talk. Hector Barbossa (I've read that it was Johnny Depp himself who gave him his first name) certainly will have his own motivations and goals in POTC: At World's End...and while he CANNOT be trusted, he will most certainly keep his word. His honor and his word are important things to Barbossa, as he's constantly defending it. "Don't impugn me honor boy!" Sure, he adheres to letter of agreement and sometimes re-interprets deals... "I said I'd let her go, but it was you who failed to specify when or where!" But if he reaches an accord...and makes a deal, he's bound to it. I'll wager that in POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl, when he makes his final deal with Jack...and sends his crew to 'take a walk' he had every intention of keeping his word. Of course after a time at sea with his own fleet, he was likely to turn the cannons on Jack's ship and claim his plunder too...but hey... He's a Pirate. I'd expect no less. Here's my prediction for At World's End. (I have purposefully stayed away from any and all spoilers, but can't help looking at pictures of Barbossa...I just LOVE the man) Barbossa helps Will, Elizabeth, Cotton and Gibbs find Jack. Ragetti and Pintel instantly return to his side...no question. They know who the fiercer pirate is and are quite rightly terrified of Barbossa. "You shot me!" After Barbossa keeps his word and follows through with his agreement, then all bets are off. Not only against Jack...(who did shoot him dead) but Will and Elizabeth too. One of my favorite sneak pic pictures of At World's End is Barbossa and Elizabeth (in Asian pirate gear) on the deck of a ship. Elizabeth and Barbossa are staring at each other...and the look in Barbossa's eyes read pure hatred and undistilled rage. She caused him no end of trouble...and he has not forgotten. He bides his time, he waits for the right opportunity, and just when you start to let your guard down...he strikes. That's why Barbossa is truly a pirate for the ages...and one of the greatest villains of all cinema. I truly hope he survives until the fade out at the conclusion of At World's End, but we all know the fate of mutineers and black hearted rouges. Oh, and for the record, I think he really does love that monkey.

Completely - it's a taste thing. But to put 'Pirates' above EVERY SINGLE ONE of those that I listed above (and more - didn't even menion Matrix or the first three Alien films) seems to me to be a lack of taste thing. And, by the way, Back to the Future CAN be included in 'any sort of 'Greatest Trilogies' list'. Because if you google 'Greatest Trilogies' you'll find lots of lists - many of which have, er, Back to the Future on them.

Finally, someone that likes old Barbie. He was a brilliant character in COTBP, and a mind-blowing one in DMC. I'd actually trust him more than old Jack, for the exact same reasons that you laid down. But you must also remember what he was AFTER in Black Pearl: he wanted his life back. Now that ol' Tia Dalma gave it to him, he achieved what he wanted to in Black Pearl. And I believe he'll be too busy trying to survive the EIC to take vengeance on Elizabeth/Will/Jack. I believe they'll reach an understanding, as they HAVE to become allies for the final battle. AND, I just caught an interview with Rush: it sounds like Barbossa might survive.

The Matrix only had one 'great' movie in it..Alien had the first two, and Back to the Future had the first one. And typing 'Greatest Trilogies' does not prove that a trilogy is great. It just means they are sold as that on all the DVD websites. I will agree that it's pretty difficult to put it above every other trilogy, but for the kids growing up now, perhaps it is their Star Wars.

I apologize for getting a little heavy handed back there about Pirates. Yes, I do love Pirates. But JustPillowTalk is right. It's all opinion. I'm just reminded so MUCH of the original Trilogy that I enjoyed as a child...the anticipation, the toys, the guesses and speculations...and now my own son is experiencing this with Pirates. That's a Summer Movie Trilogy for me...and why it's great fun.

LOTR is an amazing movie trilogy. Two Towers was actually the movie that made me fall in love with the movies. When I saw the first one, I'd never read the books so I just thought it was alright with some pretty crazy effects. But Two Towers blew my mind. I can't imagine a better trilogy ever being made. Most of that comes from being filmed back to back and having excellent source material. That always helps. I still can't figure out what the writers were thinking with the last matrix movie.

You know what bothers me about most modern day trilogies? The fact that no director ever goes into them with any balls and fully expecting them to be trilogies. So you always get the first movie in any trilogy that ends on a happy note and can stand on its own merit and keeps the rest of the movies from feeling like part of a cohesive story. Then, after it makes some money and the studio is convinced it would be worth their while to make another one, they shoot the second one as a cliffhanger and tie everything up in the third one. The original Star Wars was like this, as was the Matrix. Back to the Future had it really bad, because the first one was filmed like five years before the other two were shot back to back and they brought in that awful theme about Marty turning into some kind of retarded daredevil everytime someone called him a chicken. Even the new Star Wars Trilogy was like this to a degree, with that awful midichlorian crap that Lucas just kind of gave up on past the first film. Pirates, while I absolutely adore the films and can't wait for the third, suffered from this as well, because the studio was terrified this would be another Cutthroat Island, so they had the film be self-contained. In fact the only trilogy I can think of in this day and age that didn't suffer from this was LOTR, because Jackson knew he was going to get to do all three. Thoughts?

Movie trilogies are almost strictly a modern (last 30 years or so) phenomenon. So what are the "old" trilogies that you're comparing them to? And it isn't the directors that don't have "balls"... it's the studios. And I can't say I blame them. It'd be pretty fucking presumptuous and (and dumb)for a studio to pony up hundreds of millions of dollars for a series of movies of an untested property. I'm not saying that the issue you describe isn't there. It is. And all the movies you cited show this. But it will never change and frankly, I can't begrudge the studios that at all.

The funny thing is that it was already foreshadowed in Pirates 2. Two scenes come to mind: the Tia Dalma scene (first one) and Davy Jones playing the Organ. Davy Jones fell in love with a woman as harsh and unchanging as the sea. In other words: the Sea Goddess, Calypso. Then look at Tia Dalma's Crab Heart locket. Skip to Davy Jones' Organ scene: the VERY SAME LOCKET. Davy Jones was in love with Tia Dalma. Thus, Tia Dalma = Calypso.

Sorry, I said modern day, but I was really just speaking in general, not comparatively. And you're definitely right, it's not always the directors (although Lucas now finances his own movies) but the studios. And again you're right, it will probably never change, because it's all about the business. But here's a thought: if a movie is going to fail, it's going to fail regardless of whether or not it ends on a cliffhanger. In fact, I would think the studios would want more movies to end on a cliffhanger, so that more of the audience might be interested in seeing another movie in the series. I don't know, what do you think?

If a movie fails theatrically, it can still find a life in video/DVD and on cable and whatnot. And can eventually break even (if not turn a profit) but only If it is a standalone story (at least that is what I think). If that movie were a cliffhanger and the audience KNEW that they would never get the rest of the story, then I think it would alienate any future viewers and put a stopper in any lasting popularity the movie might have. Example: LEGEND. A theatrical flop… but one that is considered a minor classic now and has an enduring popularity. If that movie had a cliffhanger ending – and its theatrical performance assured no sequel would be made to finish the story, do you think it would be as popular today as it is? I don’t. I know I would have been extremely turned off by feeling like I’d been gypped out of something… and probably never would have watched it again or recommended it to anyone.

Say what you want, these pictures are setting the bar for movies like Avatar and the new Indiana Jones. Dead Man's Chest really wowed the hell out of me last year. I haven't seen a summer movie that did that since maybe Jurassic Park and especially the first Indiana Jones. I LOVE that Disney and Bruckheimer have had the backbone to make these movies as dense, intelligent, and dark as they are while still making them feel like huge rollercoaster rides. I really believe this is one of the great movie trilogies of all time. But if this really is the end of the series, there are a few things I hope they deal with... • The nature of Jack Sparrow's relationship with both Beckett... in detail. I want to know what Jack did to get him that brand on his arm. • The nature of Jack's relationship with Davy Jones... again, in detail. What deal did Jack strike with Jones that makes him owe the monster his soul? I know from the second film that it involves Jones allowing Jack to captain the Pearl for ten years... but that is still pretty vague. Why did Jones have to LET Jack captain the ship? This brings up the issue of... • Why the Black Pearl is so special, why everyone is after it. • Has Jack always been a pirate? •What EXACTLY has Beckett been up to back on land as a result of his pirate hunting? If this really is a movie about the end of an era, does this mean we are going to see him killing boatloads of pirates? I adore these movies, LOVE them passionately. They are some of my favorite films. I really hope, as a lover of great storytelling, that they answer these questions...

"We've both left our marks on each other". Jack has the pirate branding of the EITC, as do most pirates who'd been captured at any point. So there is no mystery there as to how/why. Now as for what "mark" Jack left on Beckett. I'd say he cut off his willy. Jack seems obsessed with eunuchs. So I assumed that he did the 'ol "snip snip" to Becket during a swordfight or something. Could be wrong, but it seems a likely (and amusing/ cringe-worthy) answer.

But DMC kinda left me feeling eph after I finally got over the rush of the ending. Cause come on, Barbossa? Love Rush, one of my fav actors so to have him back is just freaking amazing. But I also agree that Moritary's scoop seems a bit subdued. Then again, it may be a good sign that he's learnt the lesson of hype after the second movie, well, that's what I hope it was. I bloody well hope this is the "Return of the King" of Pirates, NOT "Return of the Jedi". The Two Towers and Empire Strikes Back actually handle their multiple story's well. Pirates 2 did not.......it was a total mess. A ton of storylines began, but nothing came of them. Now I am expected to believe that they can finish the 6 or 7 storylines they abysmally began in part 2 while introducing several other plot lines and characters?!?! If part 2 was anything to go by..they will probably fail. The pirate movies are visually stunning, but they are very shallow movies...Swan's story is just a rehas of many over arc's...added the fact that Keira is a terrible actress and her acting in part 2 consisted of 1 hour and 40 minutes of striking a fish pout pose and whinig like a essex girl who has not had her daily cock up the ass. It was terrible, Jack was redused to being a cartoon character and forced into situations that would make Loony Tunes cretors role their eyes (the whole cannibal island scene was pointless and wasted 30 minutes of screen time that could have been used to push the plot or develop the characters.

Of course it served the story. Jack had to hide from the open sea, he was now in greater danger and Will needed to retrieve him. All well and good. It just took about 40 minutes of screen time to accomplish. You could have done this in 3/4 of the time, still have a killer chase sequence and the story's moving faster. Do this on each sequence, and you'd have had a tight, 2-hour roller-coaster that the movie wished it could have been. I should be chomping at the bit for May 24th, but instead I'm dreading the length, like it's a cross-country flight or something. Whatever happened to 'leave 'em wanting more'?

I don't get what people's problem is with Dead Man's Chest. The continuing story thing must be harder to understand than I thought. It's not that hard people, get over it already. If you liked the characters in the first film then you shouldn't have had a problem with the second. The new characters they added were fun, and creative. I've heard over, and over again about all these supposed things that made no sense, and where there for no reason. I have to disagree if you watch the movie closely it all makes sense, and I feel they will finish off everyones story lines in an effective manner that will please the fans. If your not a fan then you won't like it no matter what they come up with, and to that I say that's your choice.

A version of Legend shown now and again on BBC2 ,does actually feature a sort of mild cliffhanger, with a laughing close-up of Tim Curry's Darkness , ghosted over the top of the heroes , suggesting he'll be back . I knew about that. But that is pretty common, even for self-contained stories, and is often more of a joke or a stinger than an actual cliffhanger. The endings of Flash Gordon, the first Austin Powers and Freddy vs. Jason were both similarly open-ended, but I wouldn't call them cliff-hangers. Same with the original BTTF, whereas in that a sequel was never originally intended and the "cliff-hanger" was a total gag.

Davey Jones raised the Wicked Wench (now renamed The Black Pearl) for Jack and he was to be it's captain for 13 years...but his first mate instigated the mutany and the rest is Pirate history. NONE of this is in the movie...but I hope it will be. The backstory is posted on several official sites including the freakin' toy sites...(like Zizzle and Neca) Star Wars anyone? Bounty Hunters? it was a lazy plot ploy to get all the characters together and kill off the rest of the chracters who were pointless in the first place?!? Sorry it was pointless and everyone in my screening was groaning at the top of their voice....it was just too stupid and pointless. 5 guys drop from a huge canyon into a ocean and we are meant to believe that they are dead...Jack falls from the same height and smashes through a bridge and lands on solid earth...but survives?!?! The cannibal isalnd scene did not add anything to the overall story...it could have been interchagned with any area (a deadly cave, Fox studio, a deserted island...which funny enough they sue again to some how magically bring the cast back together again) and dodne just the same thing. The problem with the movie is it had far too much going on without a clear sense to what it meant, when Jack bargained with Davy to bging 100 (or whatever) souls to him it's all but forgotten in the next 10 seconds. The movie was a big loud shallow mess...sorry, it's my opinion and I am sticking to it. I'd rather wait for the Bourne Ultimatum than waste money on another pirates movie...CGI does nothing for me anymore.

It is what drives the crew back to Tortuga... to try and recruit said souls. Meeting up with the now drunk, jobless and homeless Norrington AND Elizabeth... Norrington joins, but not enough souls are found, which leads us to the next movement in the story and Jones' unleashing the Kraken on Jack and his crew. Yes there are conveniences, yes there are contrivances... but in the context of a fictitious adventure story (one with plenty of supernatural elements, as well) it all flows like clock-work and makes perfect sense to anyone even half paying attention.

I never understood the harsh opinions some have of the second Pirates movie. I respect the opinions, but it seems that some viewers place more weight on these movies than they deserve to have to carry. Just like many of the best swashbuckling flicks, they splash a lot on the screen and leave us with some very memorable characters. That's a lesson Lucas learned and applied well to Star Wars and Raiders. I appreciate that the studio had the sense and the guts to plan and shoot these last two films back to back. The savings must have been pretty significant, and being able to release the last two films so close together is also a great advantage. I'm really looking forward to this last film. There is some serious talent in the cast, and if the effects match or top the Kraken from the last flick, I think we're in for a damned good time. And there is certainly nothing wrong with that.

...how seriously some of you guys are taking these movies. The plotting (and padding) is out of control, the wildass action scenes have little or nothing to do with the 'story' that actually exists, and there are far more characters than the writers seem to know what to do with. In fact, there isn't a single major character in the franchise that has anything resembling actual character depth - least of all Jack Sparrow, a tiringly one-joke character. The only guy in the second movie who had changed even the slightest bit since the first was Norrington, who has been marginalized. If they'd removed Orlando Bloom's character from the start, and set up the character of Norrington in his place in the triangle instead, I might have been more engaged. Who really cares if a blacksmith struggles with becoming a pirate? I'm sure there have been many good blacksmiths and evil blacksmiths throughout the history of blacksmithing, but a blacksmith's struggle between light and dark is not an inherently powerful metaphor for anything. Putting a hardcore pirate-hunter in Will's place, on the other hand, would have generated a hell of a lot more genuine conflict, when he's forced to become the thing he's vowwed to destroy. That's fucking Dramatic Storytelling 101, people. As it is, there are three lead characters who are either obnoxiously campy, or statically boring pretty faces (you know which is which) who run from one noisy, cartoonish action spectacle to another for well over two hours. I know I will never convince any of the true believers that Jack Sparrow is a badly written, one-note character who way-overstays his welcome, but I find it hard to believe that anybody could look at Elizabeth and Will, say they're truly great adventure film characters, and really mean it. If so, we as an audience have gotten very, very lost since Indy and Marion chased the Ark of the Covenant, and now exemplify everything that is wrong with the film industry today.

Part of the reason people criticize the movies is because other people laud them so vociferously as examples of great, "intelligent" filmmaking, and actually spend time sitting around trying to intellectualize a series that is basically popcorn entertainement designed for people who don't necessarily want to have to think at the movies. I have looked, and do not believe that these hidden layers of brilliance exist. I have noted the little details that people are proclaiming as brilliant, and I don't see that the big deal is. People said the same shit about MATRIX movies, which had a hell of a lot more going on as far as subtext, and even they couldn't deliver in the end. Watching these movies makes me feel like the a script supervisor was never even allowed on the set. The 'plotlines' all over the place, and nobody seems to care. And, Bruckheimer has never cared. I am not a big fan of the LOTR movies, but I have watched each film twice, and have great appreciation for the genuine intelligence behind their realization. If people want to call that a great trilogy, I get it. 1) The conflict is not Will resisting becoming a pirate. That conflict is Elizabeth's. 2) It's one thing to dislike it, but if you actually think that movies like DMC are "everything that is wrong with the film industry today" then you aren't paying attention to what is out there. For a better look at what is wrong with the film industry, please take into account any Jamie Kennedy movie or "Delta Farce" or any of a string slew of copycat slashers or asian ghost story knock-offs or gangsta rapper vanity projects. Sorry, I'll take the scope, excitement and imagination of a single POTC movie (flaws and all) over all of that garbage put together.

that pretty much dovetails with the way I take this franchise. The Pirates films are big, solid, brassy, noisy, somewhat obnoxious, boisterous, splashy, and they show just the right amount of reverence and respect for those who have buckled their swashes in films of yore. They are entertainments in the classic definition of the word. And considering how many films--big and small, studio and indie--lack that critical ingredient, I'm pleased that they hit on a winning formula that they seem willing to tweak from film to film. Will and Elizabeth are pretty set dressing as far as I'm concerned. The real center of the films is the world of the pirates and the supernatural. I enjoy how much more we learn about Jack as the story progresses, and he comes up against some world-class nemeses . Will and Lizzie are necessary as they are our entry into that world, but I think they're fairly insignificant to my enjoyment of the films. That's pretty impressive when you think about it. If the effects and the plotting stay sharp, At World's End is going to be a rousing good time at the movie house. (What the hell...I feel like I swallowed Gene Shalit. Blech. And I don't mean in THAT way, so stow it.)

Everyone here who saw Godfather, Future, Alien, Ark, Star Wars, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard and Superman trilogies IN A THEATER raise their hand! Thought so. Who you think is the main character rarely is. It's the Fredos, Biffs, little girls, nazis, R2D2, Pescsi, Lois Lanes characters that hold them together. It's about the main character secondly. No one wants to see three movies that deal with the main character. We want movies that deal with the main character REACTING to other characters. Thats FILMMAKING 101. Spiderman 3 did an excellent job at this. The Harry Potter movies MAY do this (judging from the trailer), Godfather lost its focus and Aliens3 was a mess. But to say that Jack is one-dimensional? Can I get some of what you are smoking? Any casual watcher can see Bean Pole is the character that holds the glue, and it's how she reacts to the three men that makes the story. You may not like it, but I do. And I'm so tired of this attitude of people like you. The "Oh I know art/film/society and what you think is shit." Tell you what, go watch French Connection, Dirty Harry and Straw Dogs and tell me what the three heroes have in common, how they would have reacted if placed in the other films, and what the villians would have done differently if they had known the heroes in a previous life. Sorry, I have decided that 1971 was the greatest film year ever, so anytime I can mention films done during that year I will.

I have been an avid visitor of this site for a long time and read through a shit load of crap posted by some of you "movie buffs". I guess this is a good time as any to do my first post. I don't understand why so many of you choose to take pot-shots at POCT 2. We all have the right to our own opinion but come on. None of the Pirate movies are supposed to be The Good Shepherd or Schindler's List or The Color Purple. Those are serious intense movies that are meant to stimulate us mentally and they did a very good job of it. Pirates is supposed to be a little serious but alot of fun at the same time. I went in to watch POTC 1 with no expectations and guess what it was a fricken awesome movie. I went in with a little higher expectation to see POTC 2 and guess what folks it was a great movie. I don't expect any less in POTC 3. You morons who think you know something about movies, don't bother responding with BS like this movie didn't do this. This movie didn't do that. Eat shit! I've enjoyed watching both movies so far and you know what, I already have tickets to see POTC 3 on Thursday at 8PM. Everybody go enjoy the movie and stop all your bitching. BTW, the new Die Hard movie should be R. Whoever is saying it should be PG-13 needs to have their head examined! This isn't supposed to be a kids movie! It's Die Hard 4! Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker. They are decorating the interior of the El Capitan with props and sets from the film. It looks cool and I may actually go see it there.

people for when they were born! Like you, I've seen all of those films in the theater, but that's not necessarily a bragging point. Considering the lousy condition of many theaters back then, and throughout the 70s, and when you take into account the high quality of the systems many people have in their homes now, and the access to dazzling transfers on DVD of many classic films, I'd be willing to argue that there might be a guy in Butte, MT having a better theatrical experience watching The Godfather than I had. And if you're going to take characters from classic movies and drop them into other films to see how they behave, can we get some interesting pairings? I'd like to see Dirty Harry in "Mrs. Doubtfire," Wolverine in "Lost in Translation," and how about Robocop in "Kindergarten Cop?"

Just wanted to say that poor ol' Will Turner is not a blacksmith who hates pirates... He's the SON of a Pirate, who is fighting his natural impulses. He believed his father was a merchant sailor and even attempted to find him when his ship was attacked by the Black Pearl (under the command of the cursed Barbossa). Will's intense hatred of Pirates was flung in his face time and time again in the first film...and in the second film, he came literally face to face with the price his father paid. His vow and his quest is not 'fighting to not be a pirate' it's fighting to release his father and himself. NOT to abandon his father...to save him from the life he chose. Oh, and he's in love with Elizabeth too.

I think Jack is wonderful...but I truly enjoy the other colorful characters as well...they flesh out this world and are just fun to watch. It's a PERFECT summer movie. Nothing more.

Ach, why the Back To The Future bashing? It's my personal favourite trilogy of all time and certainly one of the greatest blockbuster trilogies of all time. And Part 2 is one of the cleverest and most underrated sequels ever. Anyways, I don't think PTOC is in the same league as that, but I'll be interested to see what happens with 3. With all that was going on in 2, it could go down the BTTF route of tying it all up and being generally amazing, or it could go down the Matrix route of just decending further into bloated incoherence...

I definitely agree that 2 could pe trimmed down a bit, but the flaws are reliatively minor and completely outweighed by the strengths of the movie. And based on what I've seen from the writers, I have faith that they'll be able to pay off the seeds they planted in the second one. Trilogies are very hard to pull off, and LOTR is the only mainstream one I can think of that didn't have major flaws in at least one of the movies (and Two Towers is my favorite). Even if DMC wasn't as good as the first, it's still a way better installment than Jedi, Indy 2 or 3, BTTF 2 or 3. I haven't seen Spidey 3 yet, but I'm not getting my hopes up, and I'd even argue that DMC was better than the fairly weak first Spidey movie. Hell, depending on how bad spidey 3 is, the Xmen "trilogy" may be better than the first three spideys. There are still a few Matrix 2/3 comparisons, but they mostly went away after DMC was released - this thing may not beat the new Spidey opening record, but I'd be shocked it if doesn't steamroll it with overall domestic gross.

I only saw the first one and i was mildly entertained. I didn't see the second and i won't go to see the third. Me thinks Johnny Depp is an incredible actor but is totally wasted in this trilogy..
