And every time I see it it's like the movie changes. But, as it turns out, it is not the movie that is different. It is, in fact, I who am different. Anyway, Bruce Willis was awesome in the mid to late 90s. Die Hard 3, Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, 5th Element, 6th Sense--it was a good run for him. But I guess he has had his moments in the 2000s (Unbreakable, Sin City, Grindhouse) and he was making just as many crappy movies in the 90s (Armageddon, Mercury Rising, The Jackal). I think the best way to sum up Bruce Willis's career is with a quote I remember him saying on a late night talk show once. I think he was pushing the movie "Hostage". The host (maybe Jon Stewart or maybe David Letterman?) was joking about how many junk movies Willis makes, and asked him if Hostage was a good one. And, without really thinking about it, Willis said, "Yeah, it's pretty good. Three stars." And the host was kind of taken aback, because usually actors doing the publicity rounds will try to make their new movie sound like the best thing they've ever done. So he asked how many stars it was out of, and Bruce Willis thought about it for a minute and then said, "Three. Three stars out of three." But I think he gets it--he doesn't pretend that most of his movies are something that they're not.

Movies don't need to be rated R in order to be effective but truncating a film series that was made for an adult audience just so the studio's coffers can fill with greenbacks is bullshit. Look at what 20th Century Fox (or should I say, asshat 20th Century Fox president Tom Rothman) did to two of their best franchises, Alien and Predator, six films, all rated R and again made for adult audiences - they foist on the public the offal that is "Alien Vs. Predator". So let the PS3-playing fifteen year olds have their version of a "Die Hard" movie. I'll gladly look elsewhere for entertainment this summer.

I am not sure if saying the word a few times was the only thing that got the bad ratings. From what I remeber about the dies hards is that mclaine gets bloody and the action is mean and seem to have realistic consequences (even if the action itself isn't reaalistic.) That normally allowed people to fear for mclain's life and be pushed even further on the edge of their seats when he does something fantastic. You know he isn't gonna die because he's tha main character but there is always the voice in the back of your head going..... DMN how much punishment can he take?!?! Please don't die until you can stick it to the bad guy at least. I have a feeling that making it PG 13 will probably have the action but there might be a disconnect on the emotions.

I'm fairly certain that they're not going to let them get away with even one "motherfucker". I think Sam Jackson said something to that effect during the SoaP saga. But then the MPAA is entirely subjective and the whole thing depends on what kind of bowel movement the ratings guy had last. But it's not just the one line. McClane says it every other word. You use the phrase "a movie that should be R." In my opinion, there is no "should be" in a situation like this. If the story is changed to accommodate, or if important dialogue is cut to soften the rating, that's one thing. But if a few "fucks" and a some blood is lost, what's the problem? In my opinion, the only movies that "should be R" are the movies that are, by the nature of their subject, for mature audiences (like "Body Heat" for example). Everything else is up for grabs as I see it...as long as the cuts are cosmetic and not crucial to the plot.

Anyone who argues that the PG-13 rating doesn't mean the film will suck (like at FilmIck), and that those strongly demanding an R-rating judge movies based only on their affinity for graphic violence and lots of cursing = STOP KIDDING YOURSELVES YOU HIGH-ART KOOKS. The "Die Hard" franchise's R-rating defines the tone/the hardcore action attributes expressed in the title/the main character's penchant for cursing under pressure and his general personality/the severity of the conflicts this character faces/the realistic graphic and bloody havor that results from these conflicts. "Die Hard" - of all franchises - is definted by its R-rating. This is like making "Friday the 13th" PG-13, and I don't understand how people can overlook that, as fans of the prior films. Also, this film being PG-13 means it will cater directly to a younger audience of 10th graders - a la that kid from the Mac ads being cast. Why the hell should I compromise for this cop-out? Why should "Die Hard" ever go soft? Let's face it, PG-13 movies of this type are a wasteland of forgotten crap. This is not Bond or "Mission: Impossible": this rating will confine the film to a box of generica.

Harry can you please give your analysis of the mediocre Spider-Man 3 film. It would've been extremely sensible for Bruce to have told Fox he'd only do Die Hard 4 if it had an R rating (as a contractual obligation, otherwise he wouldn't do the film), but I think he contractually owed Fox a Die Hard sequel irrespective of the rating, so didn't have any pull in that regard. If Fox approach him about an inevitable Die Hard 5, it's then Bruce could make such a contractual demand and be able to sue if they reneged.

McLane is a great character. The action and set pieces are well designed. There's nothing about them not to love. But here's an example of what I'm talking about: in the first film there's the line "he could be the fucking bartender for all we know" or something like that. If that character had said "he could be the damn bartender for all we know," would it have changed the movie all that much? I don't see anything wrong with the studio opening the film up to a wider audience AS LONG AS THE CHANGES ARE COSMETIC ONLY. Let's say one of the crucial plot points was John McLane getting gang ass-raped by a bunch of terrorist nerds, fueling his need for revenge, and the studio insisted that it be cut. All of a sudden a major character motivation is sacrificed...then I see an issue. But losing a few "fucks" and a couple buckets of blood...if that makes the movie less entertaining for you, then I pity you.

He said this in Vanity Fair to journalist Peter Biskind (who has written several good books about 1970s cinema, et al). Now, Willis has to back pedal, b/c he can be sued, or more realistically, face repurcussions from people in showbiz down the line, if he doesn't do his share to promote this sucker and not trash it. You have to remember that Willis had a lot of grief about even making "Die Hard 4" - he felt he was too old and over it. But he was contractually wrangled into making it and needs a hit anyhow. BUT ALL I'M SAYING IS THAT JOHN MCCLANE HIMSELF SAID HE WASN'T STOKED ON A PG-13 "DIE HARD." I'm guessing he's still not very stoked on the movie in general, but i'm not blaming him from doing his promotions. Well, obviously there is no accounting for taste, but for me personally, thinking of movies that I think are bad-ass and are focused on action, I would name the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Bourne Identity (and Supremacy), MI3, Casino Royale, Transporter, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Fifth Element, The Fugitive, all the Indiana Jones flicks, X-men 2, Batman Begins, and I'm sure plenty more would come to mind if it weren't three in the morning. I'm not saying I wouldn't have liked it to be rated R, but I am saying it's stupid to think that the movie won't be a bad-ass movie just because it isn't rated R. And I definitely agree with whoever said that ratings standards have changed greatly since the original Die Hard was made. Swearing is still enough to bump something up to an R, but PG-13 allows for some pretty brutal action.

I'm probably the only one I know who actually enjoyed Die Hard 3 and think it's superior if not to the first then to the 2nd film. It's like Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome for me, another film hard core fans seem to hate. Why? I guess the fans love more of the same 'ole same 'old. This might explain why 24 still does well. It's the same damn show every season, but for me it gets more and more far-fetched. Really? Another terrorist attack on LA? really? -- Seriously!? And the president sure spends a lot of time there...You know, it just screams Actor Contracts and Union Consideration and has nothing to do with story...................... At least with Die Hard 3 (A film obviously. I'm aware it's a little like discussing apples vs oranges) they eased that sense of disbelief with a smart villain, colorful supporting characters and a plot tied to McClane's past not to mention it was in a different city - McClane's home city. This one came to him. McClane wasn't alone on this one either; the entire NYPD took the burden, a real precurser to what they did with 24. .............................. ........ Now comes Die Hard 4. Don't tell me you can't tell a lot about a movie by the way it's being packaged. That's BS. I think people are generally savvy and know when something mediocre is being goosed up for a big smash opening weekend. The trailer hints at a film that looks like a board-meeting conversation. The kids love the matrix, they love the action, they love Diehard, the love the computer stuff so let's make this villian a hacker, and the girls love cute surfer kids ( I mean COMEON, He's gotta have a side-kick again!!). Blender sound It's also back in DC. What, not LA again? Now if Bruce or anyone producer can explain that McClane had any business in DC during another Terrorist attack then maybe I'll be interested. Was he visiting his buddies at now Reagan International? Was he getting his car towed again? Everything about the trailer and the premise sounds old and tired. It doesn't look like anyone rolled up their sleeves and tried to dig into the material, only that production just went through the motions and that's not an effort worth my $20.00. I had just entered the house from coming back to the cinema and my mate was doing his channel flicking thing and he landed on RTE's the big movie, disneys the kid starring Bruce Willis. Now that film is beyond belief. It contains one of the stupidest stories ever put to film. There is a scene and I shit you not. Where Bruce willis is looking at the kid and looking at a future version of himself for a about 5 mins. FIVE MINS!!! I liked him in north though everyon hated that movie. He was good in the Sixth sense and Unbreakble. but his last few movies have been dogs. So maybe this film is his last gamble. This was the same guy who made Tears of the Sun.

Cut out about 300 "fucks" out leaving alowed 2, hell leave 5 if you think it will work. Cut out Takagi`s death. Can`t show that, no no. Cut whole John vs Karl fight since its full of cusing. No you`re not allowed to make"I`ll jolly cook ya" and such. Also I dont think you can strangle/hang people with chain in kids movie. No knecapping bad guy, and cut him landing headfirst into window. Cut some discussion with Argyle during limo ride. Cut coke and tits, thus making Ellis a good stand up executive we all love. Cut killing from uder the table, exploding balls, cant have that. Cut shots where John twice chechs the topless chick pic in the elevator maintanance area. Real life=gone. Cut FBI Jonsons, since they are not kid friendly at all, plus they are not 100 great and good PC people, so cut. Cut scene after running over glass. Too much blood. Cut the obvious TV media bashing. Rupert can`t have that. I mean cut the TV news scenes too. but first cut Richard Thornburg. Then go cut John`s 911 call since you can`t edit around. While you`re at it, cut the intro airport scene because he smokes, an we can`t have that either. cut more stuff to comply with PG13 untill done. yes, today the original Die Hard would be same and surely be PG 13 if released. We advanced so far from that dark age of 80`s.

They are still not great, but Fox has overtaken them by pissing all over their franchises with watered down bullshit and workmanlike directors. X3, Fantastic 4, AVP, these were all horrible missed opportunities and a PG-13 Die Hard is following in their footsteps. But hell it's from the director of Underworld, so the rating may not be the problem. Not sure why they chose Wiseman, I guess Brett Ratner was off mediocring up another flick. 20th Century Fox used to be a badass studio. What happened?

PG 13 is the kiss of death to any DIE HARD movie - you basically are neuturing the film and giving us an airline or tv version - fuck you Tom Rothman. We already saw a pg rated version of DIE HARD - it was called XXX2 and it sucked balls and was one major flop (and shared similar plot elements). Plus we saw all the other pg rated shit as well: MI3 etc - lacklustre shit. DIE HARD needs to be violent, crude, vicious, the stakes need to be high. Fox you already fucked your movie and trailer twice by inserting a kid sidekick and Kevin fucking Smith - not to mention a jet action sequence that seems like a leftover from a james cameron 90s flick. Another thing which is highly important and which fans have not mentioned until now is the music score by the late Michael Kamen - his music was unique, had that Kamen sound and was integral to the DIE HARD flicks - who can replace him effectively?

i dont kow. now that this film is possibly gonna get the pg-13 rating maybe making this film was a bad decision overall. i totally agree with whoever said as long as they started shooting this movie with an r rating in mind it might be worth waiting for the dvd, but if they went into it looking for a pg-13 than its doomed from the start. you were totally right. "yippe kayee mother trucker" just doesnt work for me. even my grandparents ( who are long since dead) wouldnt even substitute trucker for FUCKER!!! thats just plain wrong. since when did recieving an R rating make a film lose money??? are there still theaters that check IDS when buying tickets. i havent been carded at the theaters in forever , granted im 28 now and had a full beard when i was 16 in HS but still...... even than you just foudn someoen else to buy your tickets for you if ya got turned down and the movie still got your $$ in its already fat pockets. Hollywood needs to see that there still is a RED BLOODED THIRST in american society for hard core profanity spewing , gore laden movies. this is why i dont really go to the theaters as much anymore, save for the rare occasion when a film needs to be experienced in all the bells and whistles a theater can produce. With Rocky, it was a movie that was an underdog and having Stallone talk with a bunch of AICN underdog fans was cool. Especially since the movie itself was everything you wanted and hollywood didn't want in a movie. And we loved it. With Die Hard 4, it's the opposite situation. The movie looks great, but now they are watering it down and then trying to use this QA to quiet the online protests from becoming a news item that loses the movie it's audience. Rocky was something we could champion and be proud that Stallone was fighting to make his movie and make it right. Die Hard 4 just seems like ROCKY 5!! Maybe a QA is a bad idea for this time. I'd rather a QA for a movie Bruce is excited about making, not one that even he is pissed about. I don't know. The QA will probably kick ass since Bruce kicks ass and so will the movie, once we all pretend we are watching it on really big tv screens. Hell, we get commercials at the movies now. Maybe it will all go together.

While I originally posted on this, siding with Vern, I realize that it probably would be better to see the movie before forming an opinion. It's apparent from the trailer that this is not the John McClain we know and love, so whether this film is rated PG13 is not important. The question I have for the filmmakers is what did you do with John McClain, and will you please put him back where you took him from? No questions asked. I'll go see it as just another Bruce Willis actioner, and if it exceeds my expectations, hooray. I won't be spending my own money; I'll use one of the five free passes I got today when they had to cancel the 10AM IMAX screening of Spidey 3 after running only about ten minutes of footage. Few things suck more than being teased like that.

My opinion is that I haven't read the script, I haven't seen the film. Bruce said that the vast majority of stunts and visuals in the film were practical - like that car flip in the tunnel, that's a real shot, they really flipped that car there. Of course there were wires to ensure safety, but they apparently did it 8 times. Ultimately - the rating for me doesn't matter - it's the writing, the acting and thrills that matter most to me. Someone earlier in this talkback brought up CASINO ROYALE - that's a very hard PG-13. That said, I really don't like this director's work so far. The Mac kid bothers me. I feel the DIE HARD series is best in the hands of John McTiernan - and when it was in Renny Harlan's hands, it was significantly less cool. So where do I come down on all of this? Well, I want to see a great DIE HARD movie. Bruce says that in his opinion this film is right there with the first one. Does that mean that's the case? Who knows. About 5 months before the release of X3 - Hugh Jackman gave me a call and we talked for about an hour. He felt that X3 was better or as good as X2 - he told me. We also talked about THE FOUNTAIN and THE PRESTIGE - and I could hear in his voice, genuine excitement about those titles. Ultimately - I fucking hated X3. Even if I was told by a cool as hell actor that it was great. But I did see the movie. Just as I'll see this one, before forming my opinion.

The main point here is that Willis himself said he really hoped the film would be rated R. Jackman never made one comment about the rating of X3. If X3 was rated PG and Jackman said he thought it was a bad idea to rate it something softer than the prior PG-13s, and then decided to say "No wait, it's actually better than X2 or the original. Harry, let me chat with your readers to tell them exactly that." Then Jackman would be comparable to Willis. By the way, Harry, it's great that you get phone calls from big actors now, but I remember plenty of passionate and smart dissection of movies pre-release on AICN in the old days. AICN hears as much early buzz as anyone, but we're not hearing any of that regarding LFODH. The comparison to Casino Royale is not a valid one. Bond is family-friendly entertainment, as is Batman. John McClane is a chain-smoking, cursing, balding everyman-as-badass who pumps people full of lead in dire circumstances. Big difference. And Harry, if they ever make a PG-rated Batman, I think the reaction will be different. I'm not against change and reinvention, but the signs of LFODH comprising the integrity of the franchise and character are as clear as day - the nail being Willis denouncing the PG-13 rating to Willis.

Because success in the theatre depends on the BUZZ! You think back in 1989 when the first Die Hard blasted people out the back of the theatre...it would have been the ground breaking blockbuster it was if it had been rated with a friggin PG????!!! There would have been NO BUZZ. You wouldn't have rushed to tell your friends about the KICK ASS movie you just saw!! This practice of watering down action movies for their theatrical release to appeal to a wider audience will ensure only one thing...less ticket sales. Less buzz. People aren't stupid. even you need to admit that, at least in the case of jackman, there was a certain amount of damage control going on for x3; early buzz was less than favorable, and jackman was most likely sent forth to spew out the party line to the one source fox knew could marshall the internet movie fan base. all involved in the aforementioned x3 spouted the same lines about being excited about the project, about how it's the best of the series, about how we'll all be sining a different tune come some undefined 'later'. now, i hate to be a stick in the mud (and i say this in a devils advocate role), but diehard3 (and bruces' suspiciously damage-controley statements) echos the x3 scramble quite closely. that being said, i am VERY excited for the opportunity to pose our questions and concerns to the man himself; let bruce answer for his art and profession. let him know geek nation is looking to him.

it's not the fact that the script was written as a pg-13 film. it's the fact that the studios just think "hmm, why don't we cut out a bunch of stuff just so we can bring in more money for ourselves." it's all about making more money. It's not about the love of film, or making something that fans or anyone will enjoy. It's about making it kid-friendly so they can get as many people in the seats as possible to make as much money as they can. Look at what has come of the horror genre because of pg-13, a bunch of lame ass movies that make a ton of money because now teeny-boppers can get in. People aren't worried about artistic merit anymore. They just want to go the safe way. I for one am glad that Grindhouse didn't do better in the theater. It wasn't made for everyone, and RR and QT knew that. Film should not be about making money, but bringing something to life.

I was really grateful to get this version of the film on DVD a while ago and I think it really solidifies Mel's acting abilities. His character in this movie has the same haircut and leather jacket as Riggs did in Lethal 4, but you don't even have to watch either film for more than a second to know you're looking at two totally different guys. It's kinda wierd how Payback was reshot because they didn't think the public was ready for somebody as mainstream as Mel to beat up hookers and stuff. Mel started out totally badassed in Mad Max and the first Lethal Weapon movie he was totally badassed suicidal mental. In the 1990s he somehow became the new Harrison Ford briefly doing films like Ransom and Conspiracy Theory (which weren't terrible) before returning to form in Payback and Braveheart and then going nuts with his awesome directorial ventures. Seriously, Mel's the man. If we can get him here for a chat that would be amazing. And yeah, Rocky 6 ruled.

I always come to this site at least twice a day to check out the latest news, and I've always looked over the tb's but have never posted until now. It took a PG-13 rating for a Die Hard film to do it. I'm very disappointed with the news of the rating, and I've been around enough movies to know that there is a big difference in terms of intensity that can be reached with each rating. Yes I know that you can get away with more now with a PG-13 rating then you could years ago, but in reality it's not mcuh more. I also know there are some really good PG-13 action movies, I'm not getting into naming them because I feel it's not a valid. You can name all the PG-13 rated action movies you want, but it still doesn't negate the fact that we're talking about a Die Hard film. I grew up watching the Die Hard movies, and I respect Bruce a great deal. He's given us some really great films over the years, and I hope he's right, but when you limit yourself for a PG-13 rating your loosing that something special that made the Die Hard movies great. I'm not talking about all the F-bombs, adn the blood. It's more than that, it's story points, intensity, and the sheer fact of who the character is. I know Fox is doing this because they feel they'll make more money off of it, but I feel their really hurting themselves in the long run. Adults still go to the movies, and they want to see adult entertainment with a good story, and good characters. An R-rating doesn't mean death for a movie, and these studios have no clue about that. I'm not sure what is so hard for them to understand, each year there are movies that make a lot of money that are R-rated. As long as you make a good product that people are interested in seeing, They Will Come!!! I could nave dozens of movies dozens of movies that have been R-rated, and have made a ton of money. I thought especially in a summer where we have no R-rated action movies that you would want to stand out, but I guess I was wrong, and this maybe a terrible end for a great franchise.

I don't think that a Die Hard film has to be rated 'R' but doesn't that enable certain scenes and plot devices? Like in Die Hard when the Nakamura (sp?) character has his brains blown out the back of his head you see McClane fully grasp the gravity of the situation and know that it's a kill-or-be-killed battle royale. Yeah you're right, I know Mel played a major part in getting the reshoots done. If you watch the DVD interviews you see Mel (with a hilarious beard) talking about how he respected what Helgeland wanted to do, but once the distributors had a sit down with Mel about his image he saw things their way and made what he felt was the smart move for his career at the time. So yeah, it was partially Mel. But it was also Mel who helped get this director's cut DVD out. I too am movie going fan and watcher. The problem is that some years back movies completely changed gears as to how and by who they`re made. You can stuf that intelectuall argument point up your ass. Its that Hollywood was allways an industry but what happened is that lawyers and agents and financila asshols completelly took over the bussinees and all but wiped out advnturous filmmakers, without who you simply dont get good movies. Its all made ass foolproof as posible, geared towards widest possible audience. Die Hard was NEVER made for everybody and it made shitloads of money. If all those years you spent watching films haven`t enabled you to spot a fake product comming your way, I`ll say this, I envy you.

Let's look at a fucking PG movie for example: in Temple of Doom, they set a fucker on fire with lava after they rip out his fucking heart, and then let a big bald Sri Lankan get eaten by a fucking gang of crocodiles! And Luke chops his dad's fucking hand off, Leia chokes that fat fucking slug to death, and Boba Fett gets eaten by a fucking vagina-monster with tentacles! PG was fucking HARDCORE. But yeah, you're right, it was actually a Rating LOWER than PG-13. And I didn't bring up how much Die Hard made. I like it when movies I like do well, and everyone gets a chance to see it. Die Hard had the fucking kid in the limo. The black 'Whatchoo Talkin' About' Street Kid sidekick in the first one, buddy-roo. 80s cop movie fucking staple. Second movie, he basically let Reginald ValJohnson take over the 'sidekick' role. And third movie, he got into trouble because SLJ is a fucking monster actor and he had a partner instead of a 'sidekick'. Also, I said it didn't do great, and? I mean what I said. Die Hard: A lone cop taking on a ruthless terrorist organization that basically turns out to be a bunch of Eurotrash bank robbers. (Played to perfection by the blonde from The Money Pit...Not Shelley Long...the dude...the conductor...and Snape from those Harry Potter movies.) The Gauntlet: Little Eastwood flick came out some ten years earlier where Eastwood's this out of his jurisdiction cop facing a...get this...gauntlet of dudes... Enter the Dragon: Bruce Lee takes on a criminal organization from the inside out...one man against a hundred odds.. Shit, Man From Laramie, Sons of Katie Elder...the list goes on of raw ass badass American film that Die Hard borrows from. Shit that comes up in my mind like fucking filet mingnon...but Die Hard is like that good old fashioned stew gramma makes after being outside in the snow sledding. You, however, need to remember that McTiernan made all kinds of movies (Predator...Last Action Hero...etc.), and all I really wanted to say that there's no reason a PG-13 movie deserves an auto-pass...But. Orbots actually has given me reason to pause. I disliked Underworld with a fiery white hot juggernaut of passion at 200 miles per hour. It was hokey, hacky, and fodder for the pasty faced losers that manhandle my band t-shirts at Hot Topic and leer out at me like I'm not supposed to notice the fact that they're wearing fishnets and fucking combat boots. Look, kids, you're doing it for attention, so fucking suck it up when people look at you like you're an odd duck. Die Hard DID invent cliches...Shit that was all made fun of in the greatest META-movie of all time Last Action Hero (McTiernan's Unsung CLASSIC). But, once something goes from new and adventurous "Die Hard"...to old hat "Die Hard 2"...to cliche "Die Hard with a Vengeance" to stereotype...we now have a genre called 'Buddy Cop Action' flicks....We all get to play Monday Morning Quarterback and say that lawyers are making all the decisions.
