Was anybody really screaming for new effects (though I may be a hypocrite because I like the little flourishes to the old Doctor Who's on DVD. However, in that case, they'll use a new image of a planet where there used to be just a tennis ball hanging from a string. Literally.)

Haven't seen the remastered eps as I can never figure out when they're on. But, I think I would miss the cheesy effects, they were such a part of the show.
TOO DARK!

I still say the remastered Enterprise is too dark and on last week's remastered Chicago gansters episode I wondered why they did not reimage the phaser blast of the gangs around the two cars. Other than the establishing planet shot couldn't see anything else that was updated. Oh well, at least its getting me to watch them again.

I wasn't ever screaming for updated effects, but I have thoroughly enjoyed watching these remastered episodes. They look so much better and it doesn't look like the ship is on wires anymore!
What they should've done...

... is reedit the scene at the end where they beam the fighter pilot back to his plane. He should've been beamed back a split second AFTER they originally beamed him up to the Enterprise, instead they beamed him back BEFORE he was beamed out. Makes no sense, his two versions would've merged and exploded. Same thing with the Air Force guard who discovered Kirk sneaking around the Air Force Base. Oh well, plotholes... it was still a good episode.

If you don't get the episodes locally you might try signing up for a newsgroup service and looking in groups like in alt.binaries.startrek, or alt.binaries.multimedia.startr ek I have it on good authority they show up in there from time to time. For the rest of us, here is a little parody or two of Star Trek this week I did Space 1969 - http://livevideo.com/Kelvingto n Spockboy does an even better parody here - http://livevideo.com/Spockboy

The old effects is part of the charm of the old series. I remember this episode and it is really dumb, story-wise. I think it had some famous guest stars and it was sort of supposed to be spun into a different series.
Some enlightenment for the ill-informed...

Personally, I love the work that CBS-D is doing on the old eps. I never found the old effects "charming," and in an HD universe, they're simply terrible. With the exception of "The Tholian Web," I've really enjoyed all the work that CBS-D have done to make these episodes engaging again. But, to answer some of the ill-informed critics here: bythehairofsanjaya: The effect *was* replaced. The old effect had the Batman-esque "Pow!" animations which the CBS-D team has removed. Rupee88: If you're going to bag on a Trek episode, then at least get informed. The one you're referring to is "Assignment: Earth."

Kudos to the Okudas for doing this! They should all be praised and thanked for making ST:TOS something better to watch than it originally was. I do not understand why there is so much angst within the Star Trek community at this idea of fixing what was wrong in the first place with the Original Series. All the Okudas are trying to do, is to make the old series something far more enjoyable to watch, and making it look more 21st century. As a fan of the original series, I can say that the old SFX they used was awfully bad in most cases. Even worse than that, the SFX crew had to use the same SFX shots over and over again on different epispodes, because they could not afford to do something new every week. Not only that, but the shots were cheesy and silly, as compared to today's exposure to great computer-generated shots that we see now. I for one, look forward each and every week to seeing the old shows given a much-needed dose of high-tech adrenaline that they sorely need to revitalize the look of old shows. They are FAR BETTER to look at now, and great to see!
I'm Also Enjoying The Remastering Of TOS

That one shot of it flying above the clouds is enough to sell me! The old effects for this episode were horrible. It's another episode that should be a poster child for why they are doing this.

I'm not impressed. The quick shots of the Enterprise in orbit, or leaving orbit look very good. The Atmosphere shots and the Sun shots look awful. It looked so cheesy it's not even funny. I guess they just don't have the funds to do this right.

Yeah, some of the establishing shots like with the Enterprise in orbit or the viewscreen shot down onto the planet were great, but the shots in the atmosphere were crap. I swear it looked like an Enterprise model being pulled by a string at the beginning of the episode.
