I´m writing to you from Germany where we were "lucky" enough to get a pre U.S. release which doesn`t happen too often. The movie i`m talking about is Spider-Man 3. I have to say that i really like reading comics though and most of the time i like the movies as well. My favors are Batman Begins and The Hulk (yeah i know). I almost liked Spider-Man (1) and the second one was a little better. All 3 movies have several weak points which are the two lead actors. MJ looked ok in the first movie but now she`s just ugly and Tobey got fat. His double-chin should earn him the title role in an upcoming movie about the life of Don Vito. He got thin-haired so he looks like he`s thirty in "3". I thought they ruined the Goblin in "1" but now i just got to say they fucked up Venom even more. He almost seems like a Sandman sidekick cause he`s on-screen for about 10 minutes. So with my problems due to Pete and MJ one can easily see why i didn`t really like the movies plus i think Sam Raimi doesn`t get the job right. So finally (some spoilers ahead): I think Spider-Man 3 is a good movie at times but the bad parts are superior. I really liked the whole of the Sandman plot. Thomas Haden Church get`s the job perfectly done and the effects look so much better than in the Mummy-like trailer. Harry`s got a good part (and James Franco easily outplays Tobey McDonalds) and the new Goblin (or Hobgoblin) costume looks alright. The action scenes are good but i really wonder where those speculated 300+ million dollars have gone. I mean: Damn those Venom teeth look pretty bad. And there`s the major problem i had. Venom almost get`s overlooked. That was one of Spider-Man`s biggest enemy. Ok it wasn`t as bad as Bane in Batman&Robin (very sad) but i was really disappointed. I just hope the rest in Dr Connors`lab doesn`t spawn Carnage in the next movie. By the way i hope the lizard will be up for "4". Topher Grace is great as Eddie Brock but Venom just didn`t look as mean as in the comic books. Tobey really looks like he`s lost and gained weight throughout the movie. He rarely looks like a lead actor or a beliveable Peter Parker.

Seems a bit stupid and far-fetched, even for a flick about a guy who wears tights and climbs walls. The Ultimate Spidey books did a better job of explaining it away (but then I suppose this film is already so jammed full of plotlines that they couldn't go for another).

honest review. venom should have been saved for another movie, he seems to rushed. and i think the giant sandman at the end was badly done... roars like a godzilla and it cant even chase spidey around properly. if only we could get an early script of sm3 where raimi didnt include the symbiote story and venom.

ign says that somebody from sm3 who appears to be dead will make a return. i hope its eddie brock only this time he will have a much bigger screen time.... and please.... bring on the lizard already. the worst thing they could do now is to have carnage for a big screen movie, carnage was already pretty lame in the comics we dont need another symbiote character.

Topher Grace and Tobey where on the letterman show tonight. Tobey looked like he really didn't want to be there. Specially when Dave started asking about how much money he wins playing poker... topher was hilarious, tobey was a cold fish. Me thinks he might need to work on his diplomacy skillz. The clip they showed was far far far far far better than the clip kirsten "ugly face" dunst brought to the show monday night. Damn I can't wait to see this movie IMAX style.

Sorry, but Miss Howard may have a beautiful face, but i remember a blond bombshell from the comics that was long and slender, which Miss Howard just isn't (although they try to disguise that in the movie via clothing). Saw SM3 yesterday in germany. It was way too long and sometimes really boring (watch MJ and Harry cooking for 10 min or so, i exspected the recipe via subtitles any second).

Damn it!!! What a wasted Cinematic Event! If Brando two cotton balls in the mouth AKA "The Method" can come back, so should The World Funniest Running Matchstick! I thought the spaceboy son story from 2 would be the Venom backstory answer- Kid goes to space- Mars or some other planet in the opening. They find a cool rock, on the way back home the black goo leaks out of the rock if infects someone shit goes bad and the Space shuttle crashes into the ocean. The space boy drowns and the black goo recedes into his head through his eyes. Kinda like Subspecies Peter is at the funeral, since it's his bosses son. the black taint senses his peters powers and it races out of the spaceboys face onto Peters skin. But nooo we have a rock from space hti the ground- does anyone see it??? Richard Prior would warn a whiteboy not to mess with the Other Nature stuff. But Whitey don't listen!

From the sounds of it, Raimi/MacGuire/Dunst are kind of just going through the motions with this film. Spider-Man can really use a new director/writer and maybe actors who don't come off like they're a little bored with the series. A Dunst-less MJ can only be a good thing in a future movie.

of watching the original films in the franchise to get in the mood and mindset for a sequel. So when you saw Casino Royale, did you watch ALL the previous Bond movies or just the Barry Nelson and Peter Niven versions of Casino Royale? Someone had to say it. There's no way this film could be as bad as Spidey 1. That flick had moments. Yet, it had Spidey being a wimp at the end of a flick. Thank goodness part 2 remedied this problem. Nevertheless, by the time Bumblebee shows up to change the face of action films forever. This movie will seem like it came out years ago.

The clip of the fight between Parker and Goblin 2 looks just as cartoonish as the first outing. It must be really hard to program those CGI critters to look like real objects with weight and momentum. Whoever codes a physics engine that makes CGI people and objects move realistically as if they had mass to them will finally make CGI not look like crap.

and I must say that I'm quite disappointed. Part 3 comes nowhere near the quality of the great Spidey 2, the fx where sometimes really good but sometimes shockingly mediocre, Bryce Dallas H. looks like shit (ugly one that is), Tobey has some nice laughs but also some silly scenes of mawkishness. Overall the first 2/3 of the movie where good but the last third is full of vexations.

Okay, so maybe it's not quite up there with Spidey 2. And maybe it's too devoted to character and maudlin "forgiveness" themes. But I'd pay $8 just to watch a Spidey versus Sandman fight, so they're getting my money. They had my money for this a long time ago, and tomorrow at 11:30pm I will stroll in to see it with my erection. One thing I do agree with that seems to be a general consensus: enough with MJ getting fucking kidnapped by villains and dangled precariously in every fucking movie. Spidey should let her fall, already. I don't care if MJ makes some joke in this movie like, "Why do they always kidnap me!?" If you have to lighten it up with a joke like that, then you too (the writers) must know it's one time too many with the MJ in peril crap. I'd nail Kirsten for chuckles, but let's face it, in Spidey 1 and 2 she doesn't come across as being worth all the goddamn trouble. Wow, less than 24 hours and I'll have seen it. I think I am experiencing pre-come in my pants.

Tom Poston, dead at (insert age here). Famous for being the not-so-famous guy who played second fiddle characters on countless TV sitcoms in the 1970s-80s, most notably, "Mork and Mindy." Many were under the impression he was already dead.

That is funny as hell. The black goo falling from the sky is a little stupid. I know they couldn't do the whole Secret Wars story but I thought they set it up nicely to do the cartoon version's origin. Jameson's son was astronaut who had been to Mars in the last movie. They could have just said it was a sample he brought back with him. Then it could have escaped from Doc Conners lab and found it's way to Peter. Oh well still sounds good.

John Jameson had "played football on the moon," but I don't recall any reference to Mars. Still, in early rumors about the movie, you are right--the black goo was gonna arrive to earth via John and a space shuttle or some crap like that.

Minor spoiler GRAMMATON: According to the novel, the temporary amnesia stretches back farther than that, to the point where Harry has to be reminded that his dad was in fact killed at all. I think as a plot device, the amnesia works because it gives Peter a moment's relief in tension from the my-best-friend-wants-to-kill me suspense, and he's reminded of the way things ought to be, and possibly could be. Plus, it gives Willem DaFoe a chance to return and remind Harry how 'weak' he's being.

Okay, so Opie's daughter is a little wide in the hips. She's still very good-looking. I like Kirsten, but I'm not ga-ga over her. And Garbageman might be right that a bag of flour can act better. Heck, if you add water, it might even be more fun in bed. But I'm glad Raimi has cast women in Spidey that pass as "real." If you cast women who truly resembled the hotness of MJ and Gwen in the comics, shucks, I dunno. I can believe that Dunst's MJ really is the girl next door. Let's put it that way. At the end of the day, all straight men know that the hottest chick in Spidey is the girl who plays Betty, with the landlord's daughter and Aunt May tied for second place :)

I was disappointed when I first heard the meteor shower would be the source for venom. Thought they wuold got with the more believable bit from the comics, and better set up by the second film, of having it come from space spores picked up when spider-man saved astronaut jameson's son from an out of control spacecraft about to crash on re-entry. Ditching that and replacing it with a deus-ex meteor shower seems like not so good a trade.

Same with LOTR, POTC, T3 (not recommended in this case, just makes the 3rd one look bad and it really isn't) Had no idea this practice was foreign in these camps.

but I think I'll be correct in my assessment that Venom should have only been a small part of the 3rd movie, only at the end and leading directly into Spidey 4 and the big showdown. Also, Spidey 3 and 4 should have been filmed back-to-back. It's the new rage these days, thankfully replacing the prequel as the thing to do for studio tentpole movies.

The average american is unaware of the origins of the storylines we have come to love from reading comics. I am going into the movie with that mind set. Now if the movie just sucks all around THEN I will post some comments on what they did. I really hope they leave it open for venom to come back. I really do. and comes back later. But they've teased us with Dr. Connors enough now, and it's time for the Lizard to make an appearance. Trouble is with a sequel, you need to figure out what the real "story" will be, not just who will Spidey fight with. Maybe have the Peter-MJ wedding, maybe have Aunt May die, maybe have Peter get injured to the point where he really is out of action, like a broken leg or some shit. I know back when I read the comic book he screwed up his arms enough and wore webslings. I'd love to see him fight Juggernaut--but not the Vinnie Jones Ratner Juggernaut, it'd HAVE to be the brown armored version we're familiar with. Rhino wouldn't be bad, or Electro. Or Shocker. Hell, retcon the story so that they're all flunkies who work at some tech-factory, and all of them gain their unique powers at the same friggin' time. Cuts down on the origin bullshit. Except Juggie--his power MUST come from the gem of Cytorrak. Jesus Christ, everyone KNOWS that!

Thing is, you've used the best, most obvious villains AND the best story material for the first two movies. Now you're short on ideas. Yeah, you'll have to be clever and have a damn good story and keep your bad guys from being too B or C level, like Stilt Man or Leap-Frog or Speed Demon. But I can do it. Jesus wants me to do it!

Capone is being surprisingly forgiving. Major plot-holes aside, it may be me, but I could swear the actress that was supposed to be the "hot" Gwen Stacey had a fat ass. They were trying to hide that enormous kadunkadunk the entire movie. They couldn't even CG it out! The Dark Parker Thrust Dance, as he entered or left every room was freaking hilarious...for 10 minutes! I didn't get the scrawny heroin-addicted landlords daughter in 2 and I really don't get it in 3. She must be related to someone or maybe one of the stunt doubles from Army of Darkness. SPOILERS about Harry's amnesia. No really, SPOILERS. It's almost a necessary plot device here, as it allows the "good" Harry to return, to forget that he wants to kill Peter, and why. This helps remind Pete that they are, or were, best friends and could be buddies again. And it helps Harry charm up to Mary Jane, who's been put off by emo-Peter, who isn't being sympathetic with her career problems. Then, having charmed MJ, her rejection of him hits much harder. Visions of his father come back to remind him of his "weakness," and Harry is much more villainous when he uses MJ to break up with Peter and manipulate other stuff.

People are right when they say Venom is only in it for 10 minutes, Grace is in the film longer, as is the symbiont, however those two combined as venom take up very little screen time. There is so much going on I never noticed at first, my fingers are firmly crossed for a more Venomous 4. Still an amazing movie though, I do not think there is too much going on, just a lot more than we are used to in a Spidey film.

Yeah, it's kind of common knowledge that Raimi is a "classic" spidey fan and wasn't interested in a Venom story. But Avi Arad or Grant Curtis or one of other producer / writers "convinced" him that Venom is over 20 years old and does have a hardcore following, and that his inclusion would win favor. Guess he still wasn't sold on the idea, since all reviews suggest that his appearance is shoehorned at the end of the movie, at which point he is handily disposed of. That's CRAP, brothers!! Raimi should have either stuck to his guns and said, "no venom" or else really done a good story around him or set him up as the baddie for 4.

I saw Spidey 3. Here's some thoughts...
by GobBluth06
May 2nd, 2007
02:23:07 PM
I saw Spidey 3 last night. Three of my impressions that I'm sure a lot of people are going to have after seeing this... 1. The action sequences are absolutely AMAZING. As good or better than the other films. 2. The story is good. Not great, but good. Yes, too much is crammed in the movie, but I think they realized this is the last one they're doing for a while and they wanted to try and give fans what they wanted. It just comes off as a bit too much. 3. This movie has some of the most dumb, ridiculous, and badly acted scenes. Seriously, my friend and I laughed at how stupid some of the scenes were in the movie. The scenes with Harry without a memory are so badly acted by James Franco you can't help but laugh at how unnatural it is. The scene with Harry and MJ in his kitchen just randomly dancing the twist while making an omlett was pointless and stupid looking. The jazz club scene where Peter jumps around, begins playing the piano, and then dancing with Gwen was like a scene out of The Mask.(I agree with the Alex on the Totally Rad Show about that) And finally, the scene with Peter walking down the street checking out the girls and dancing was a joke. It wasn't like the scene in Spidey 2 with Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head. Overall, the movie is entertaining and good, but some of the scenes in the movie almost ruin it. I loved the first two Spideys. I watched them multiple times and I remember after seeing each of them for the first time, I wanted to immeadiately go back and watch them again. This one didn't give me that feeling. The only reason I would want to watch it again would be for the action sequences. Oh yeah, Capone has the Gwen Stacy/MJ thing right. Bryce Dallas Howard is so beautiful in this movie. She makes MJ look horrible.
I agree, PerformingMonkey

They still could have had Spidey in the black suit and Brock and only had Venom created in the last scene of the movie. It could have been the one from the trailer where he growls and leaps at the camera. Fade to black. How awesome would that have been? People in the audience would have gone NUTS and everyone would be stoked for Spidey 4. Sadly, not to be.

I had similar feelings watching S3, but I'm hearing people say that Venom was shoehorned in, but I'll be damned if the Sandman character was just as underdeveloped and as unresolved as I've seen. And don't get me started on the big Cum-ba-ya cryfest at the end. As an all-things-Raimi lover, I'm confused by this movie and rather than repost my earlier review on Cumpstons TB, I've just got one concept to leave you guys with...The Dark-Peter Pelvic Thrust dance. thats what ive been saying the whole time.... hollywood cant piece together a logical story for shit. have jamieson shuttle bring back the symbiote, either spidey goes to recuse the crashed shuttle or the symbiote is being studied by some lab and breaks loose... it would have been much more convincing for some scientist in a lab talk about how its an alien parasite rather than for audience to just see some goop go onto peter.

Oh My GOD! If that's the case, Raimi must have had his dog write the damn thing. In the dark. With a pencil tied to its dick. After shotgunning the mutt some serious weed. I saw the first two Spiderman movies. I have to say there is NO excuse at all for a large-budget Hollywood movie like this to be written at a level WORSE than the crap that those movies were. Not that the movies were bad, per se. But yeah, they were. Bad.

Granted, I'm not a huge Spidey fan, but I was actually pissed off for the people who are. I thought the people who are really so invested in such a long-standing American superhero icon deserved 2 much better movies. And I guess this one apparently couldn't be even THAT good.
