Film versions of Animes...

Hmmm, "Astroboy" could prove interesting. Personally, i'd like to see some live acion representations of "Genocyber", "Neon Genesis Evangelion", "Macross Plus", etc. and for God's sake, can someone please make an acurate, non-chop-saki version of "Guyver"?!?! Yeesh! Oh, and if Disney make one cut on "Princess Mononoke", I'm takin' a friggin' hostage. It's time we Americans started taking our animation seriously. It's NOT just for kids! Trix is, animation isn't. HBO's "Spawn The Animated Series" is a fine example of what can be done if the execs grow some balls. Yeah that's right...I said, "GROW SOME BALLS!!!"
That's fine and dandy...but where's Star Blazers????

I believe you're correct...a live action Astroy Boy movie WOULD be cool...but do you really believe they'll do it justice??? Give your head a shake!! Forget it...not gonna happen. BTW, where's that Star Blazers movie Disney was supposed to do??? Not that it would have been any good, but it still would have helped with the public awareness of the greatest Anime series of all time!!!!

I have just recently gotten into newer Anime in a big way after a friend of mine gave me a used copy of Armitage III. Before that I'd seen AKIRA of course and it's amazing of course, but most of the stuff I saw after that kinda rubbed me the wrong way except GUYVER and MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. Maybe someone could suggest some stuff, since there's a sea of shit to wade through. As far as ASTROBOY goes I've always dug old-school animation and Astro Boy ranks as some of the best ever. I just hope they don't try to modernize it too much. A kind of retro/futuristic sixties vibe, like a revamped Godzilla Vs. Monster Zero look in Technicolor with an all CGI Astroboy that looks EXACTLY like a 3D version of the classic character would be my suggestion. That Simpsons episode where they tried to introduce a "cool" dog character into Itchy and Scratchy was a perfect example of what's wrong with most cartoons today. Wanking guitar music (11 years too late) extreme sports and "with it" slang do not a magical (or cool) animation make. This applies to live action too. So if they give Astro Boy dayglo rollerblades and, as Harry said, have him morph into that monumentally iritating pipsqueek Jonatathan Taylor Thomas, I'll shit a brick. I hope they don't forget that the aesthetic of the day and age that it was made in was one of the things that make Astro Boy as dope as he is. This film has the potential to cross over to teens and twenty-thirty-somethings if they don't drop the ball and make an inane kiddie flick instead. Like the guy in FIRSTBORN said "Hip, isn't hip, anymore".

If they make a cool Astro Boy movie I'll be the happiest bloke on the face of the Earth. If it turns into a rotten load of tripe dug up to keep the kiddies entertained for a couple of hours, I will burst into tears and scream "SANTA CLAUS IS DEAD!" at the top of my lungs for several hours before I bludgeon anyone who passes with an ergonomic chair. Now if they'd make a Monkey Magic film, that would be something!
Oh yeah, and....

When I stated above that ASTRO BOY should be CGI, I want to clarify that CGI should be used not to make the character soulless and slick, but simply to render an interpretation of him that does the old series justice in a live action realm. The lithoed tin toy idea is the right way to go, but do it at least partially CGI so that he doesn't come off as too much of a puppet (bad Howard The Duck flashback, somebody get me some thorazine), after seeing the TPH trailer, I know it can be done. Texture, baby, texture. Also a note to Jerry Bruckhiemer and the people who approved the trailers for Entrapment, Goldeneye and The Fifth Element, cease and desist from using Yngve Malmsteen guitar solos in your movies and trailers -- it's fucking laughable. Later.

An Astroboy movie? the only way I can see it being remotely cool is if they make Atlas' crystal flying thing look REALLY FREAKIN' COOL!

Come on, this can't possibly work. I haven't seen Astroboy since Iwas 3 in 1969 N.Y., and from what I remember it won't worl live-action. How many cartoons have worked as live action. Hey, how about a feature cartoon! Why not, after-all we are in a animation renassance here. Now Starblazers could work live action. The characters were were drawn to life anyway. This cartoons to live action has grown tiresome......
Columbia pictures and the Japanese connection...

Why is it that columbia pictures, a wholely owned subsidy of Sony Entertainment Corp, seems to be the only Hollywood studio making deals with the Japanese to bring Japanese cultural icon to the U.S. and in effect to the world? Coincidence?
Not the only one.

Unfortunately Universal isn't the only one. There's also Disney. (ugh) I just can't wait to see Astroboy (Or is that The Mighty Atom???) jump up, spin around, have machine guns pop out of his butt and shoot the crap out a thirty foot tall robot. Yeah Baby!
Live action anime? Import the originals first.

"Astroboy" could be interesting, if the original timbre -- the occasionally sombre quality -- could be kept, but that won't happen. The danger with live action anime is that there is an inevitable "dumbing down" effect. Although I generally agree with the first poster's comments, I think that if a major studio ever tried to remake "Evangelion," it would end up looking something like "Wing Commander," rather than the above-Star-Wars-quality piece of science fiction that it currently is. When they try to condense 26 linear episodes down to a two hour movie (which, admittedly, is what Gainax partially did with "Death/Rebirth"), quality's gonna suffer. The film-going community would be better served if the studios would be more open to importing original anime films WITH NO CUTS. To an extent, they are doing this: we all know about "Mononoke" and "Laputa"'s releases, and "Chinese Ghost Story" comes out this month. But they've got to import the good stuff: the one film that's got me hyped this year, even more than a certain Memorial Day film, is Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Adolescence Mokushiroku (Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse)" This thing has a veil of secrecy clamped down it tighter than the one on "Eyes Wide Shut." Those readers here who are familiar with Utena are going to be shocked by this film. I'd like to think that some film studio would have the nerve to dub (or preferably, subtitle) this film (or any of the other new ones -- I'd even like to see the "Card Captor Sakura" film on the big screen) and put it in a few cities to test the markets.
Anime goes to Hollywood

For some reason, I think the thought of an Astro Boy movie isn't a very good one (most of this is personal I guess b/c I find Astro Boy quite boring). As far as the first poster's idea about a Hollywood Macross Plus movie? Macross Plus wasn't a huge success even in Japan. I wonder what would make Hollywood executives think that the US market will be any different. As far as an Evangelion movie, there is NO POSSIBLE way that one will work. The first scene with Shinji and Asuka in Episode 25: Air will illustrate that point (just think about the content and their ages). Most of the general viewing public could not handling it. Plus, I am extremely happy with how Eva turned out. Does anybody really want an American watered-down version? Like most of you, I would invite a Yamato/Starblazers movie or a Super Dimensional Fortress Macross movie (aka Robotech).

Have you seen The End of Evangelion? I don't think there is any way there will be a sequel. We might as well face it Eva is over and done with (At this point, I can not see a sequel being made). About the only thing they could do is a rewrite. As for Macross Plus, there is Macross 7 and Macross Dynamite 7. For this series, sequels are not needed as for the most part, they have been taken up by someone else.
Yeah, that's what i said, "Get a friggin' clue!"

yeesh, i mean rather than cram every single episode of evangelion into one two-hour movie, make a couple of movies. Duh! could you imagine the Star Wars Trilogy crammed in to 2 hours. I think not. that's what i'm talking about. there's no way anyone would attempt to put all of it together (not succesfully, at least). Why does everything have to be stand-alone? Think bigger. Hollywood doesn't have the balls to make sequels anymore. unless it's a sure-fire hit. where are the entrepeneures? C'mon DMaul, expand your thoughts, evolve. I know you can do it. I believe in you. :P

I don't think you really even know what you are talking about. You CAN NOT make a sequel to Evangelion. It's over, and if you understood the subject matter you would know that. As far as making an Evangelion movie, I think it would take too much dumbing down to make it mainstream accessible. If cut down, something would have to suffer, more than likely the inner self struggles within each character, and the intricate plot. Evangelion could not possibly be made into anything less than 4 full length movies, and that's cutting a lot out (don't include Death which is a butchering of the story and it serves as an example as to why Eva shouldn't be tampered with), most notably the comic relief (which can be removed but there isn't much of it in this series---meaning there isn't enough of it to justify a couple of movies or even three if you want to do it well.) Cutting something out will inevitably ruin it. Watch "Lord of the Rings" if you need an example. Hollywood doesn't want to make sequels? Of course Hollywood doesn't want to make sequels unless they believe they can make money on it. Again watch "Lord of the Rings" (animated version on both accounts) to find out what happens to ill-fated sequels. Do you honestly believe Evangelion would be a hit in America? I don't think so because it's way too cerebral. Macross Plus? Yeah, it might. I won't include an opinion on this one because I didn't particularly care for it. Simply put, Eva is exactly where it needs to be. If people want to watch it, it's available and why mess with perfection (well, pretty darn close). Think about it man!! I know you can if you try. I believe in you!!

oh, by the way (not to continue the agruement) but i think you misunderstood what i was saying. i meant sequels as in make a single movie telling the stories of volumes (videos) 1-3 or something, then the sequel would be of volumes 3-6, etc. but that would be a lot of sequels wouldn't it? LOL anyways, talk to you later.
