After so many movies simply not living up to the hype, this is one I strongly feel won't let us down. Despite all the spectacle, the effects and the action these movies rest on our affection for the characters (well for one character at any rate). Captain Jack Sparrow has certainly risen to the ranks of iconic characters and these movies simply wouldn't be the same without him and Depp's portrayl of him. More then Spidey, Venom and Transformers, this is the film I am most waiting for without a doubt.

But don't tell me there is going to be a 4,5,6th one i really don't want to watch jhonny and the rest of the cast drag there asses around for 6 movies. Pirates looks good and was a behemoth last year. Shrek 2 was an equal monster a few years ago. Spidey has a deep fanbase and looks good. They all open in May boys and girls. What's going to be their domestic gross? Can for the first time three movies opening in the same month each make $350 mil domestically? Is there enough room in this town for all of them? We've got a week till it all kicks off. Shall we play a game? Simply list the three movies mentioned above-Pirates 3, Shrek 3, Spidey 3 and what you think their domestic gross will be. Here's my take: 1) Pirates 3: $425 mil 2) Shrek 3: $395 mil 3) Spidey 3: $340 mil Looking forward to everyone elses' guess. Let the games begin!

First film
by Mattyboy122
Apr 29th, 2007
06:49:31 PM
Was fun, if too long. Second film was an absolute wreck. Way too complicated and self-consciously trying to top the first film. It's a shame that this self-consciousness spread even to Depp, whose performance in the second one was a futile attempt to catch lightning in a bottle for the second time. And this third film will be a bloated mess, coming in just shy of 3 hours long. The biggest problem with the first film was its running time, and a huge problem with the second film was its length (the worst problem for the second film was, without a doubt, the writing), and yet they're giving us a nearly 3 hour Pirates film. This isn't Lord of the Rings, folks. These movies are excessively long in a way that great films of the genre (Raiders of the Lost Ark, for example) aren't.

So, from what I've read and seen, i'd guess that Elizabeth becomes a Pirate Captain with her own ship, possibly even the Black Pearl. That would make the next trilogy all about her. If Jack becomes immortal, he'd be the perfect "Ben Kenobi" to advise her on whatever supernatural they encounter in the next trilogy. Will Turner's probably gonna die in some sort of sacrifice to save his daddy's soul from eternal damnation. So, imagine...Pirates of the Caribbean : Legend of the Pirate Queen.

Funny old world, I enjoy the second film more the more I see it, at first it did seem disjointed and a mess, though after subsequent viewings it find a tight, epic setting tale, certainly good fun. The third looks awesome, the Knightley looks even less annoying and I am certain we will finally see Will scupper Jack, here's hoping.

09:40:59 PM
It was bloated directionless action. During the whole cannibal section (which I was looking forward to when I first heard about it) I just kept on thinking, "what the hell does this have to do with anything." It was an action piece that did nothing to move the story along. Absolutely pointless. I like long movies but someone seriously needed to edit that thing down. Oh yeah, and why did Knightley's character all of a sudden become Xena in between the first and second film? Instead of having an actual character arc in the film for her, they decided to casually mention she's become the swashbuckling sort, even though it runs counter to the last film. Two was such a disappointment because I never expected the first movie to be any good and it really surprised me. This looks like it might be another bloated series of action pieces rather than an actual story. Hopefully they'll prove me wrong.

Elizabeth learned from Will, who (cannonically) is a really good swordsman. As of right now, I don't see Jack as being that good of a swashbuckler (he relies more on his wit, then his fighting skills). But still, they both pale in comparison to the awesomeness that is James Norrington.

I can't believe people actually compare these movies to the Star Wars OT. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley don't hold a candle to Ford, Hamill, and Fisher - and never will. POTC = overrated
Summer Movie Gross Theory
by seanny_d
Apr 29th, 2007
11:24:44 PM
I personally think that either Spider-Man or Shrek is going to win the gross wars this summer. Let me explain.

There is a good portion of the population that goes to the movies maybe once or twice a year. Barely go at all. These people are NOTHING like any of us who read this site, so it's hard to even conceptualize them. So when they go, probably taking the family, they're going to see a huge event movie. My theory is that this section of the population will go to see the first huge event movie that is gauged by the general public as "quality." Therefore Spider-Man fits the bill with that one. Last year, despite what YOU (or I) thought of Superman Returns, the general public did not deem it as eventful as it could have been probably from a spectacular lack of action and a confused marketing campaign. Plus, Spider-Man has a two week head start on Shrek and three weeks on Pirates. You get those once or twice out to the movies and they'll be going to see Spider-Man. The only issue is if Shrek is able to fit in a significantly more amount of show times because of its shorter running time, which could tip the scales in its favor.

Pirates on the other hand is coming out of the gate third and seems to have a significantly longer running time than the other two, which is going to hurt it in that other demographic. Couple that with the relatively lackluster marketing campaign that Pirates has shown thus far, and the excellent buzz coming from Spider-Man and it looks like you got yourself a winner. (Seriously, ONE trailer two months before release? If I were on that campaign I'd be pulling shit like "The Summer Doesn't Start Until May 25" to tell people to hold off on Spider-Man and go see Pirates instead.)

The issue with Pirates is that even though I'm sure awareness is rather high since they just had 2 come out last summer, is that a good portion of the population probably doesn't even know when Pirates 3 is coming out whereas people have been pelted with the May 4 date for months.

Of course, I could be totally wrong on all of this, and I don't know why I or anyone else even CARES about grosses, but I suppose we'll see in the coming weeks/months.

Pirates 3 will not do as well as 2. Plus Disney has Ratatooie or however the hell it's spelled. Cars had serious game last year. Pirates 2 was far inferior to P1. So when both movies this year do not match last year's take Diz will freak. "OH my god...close Epcot...close Tower of Terror...close California grill...cut hours...shut down the monorail". I know how they roll.
Pirates IV....
by Boromir187
Apr 30th, 2007
12:17:23 AM
The proposed fourth Pirates movie is going to fall in line with Indy IV and Evil Dead IV, in that it is constantly talked about by all those involved as a fun possibility but has a slim chance of actually ever coming together. We seem to have lucked out now that 19 years later we are actually going to get a fourth Indiana Jones movie. Still don't have that Evil Dead IV though. Speaking of it, Raimi has started to chat up the possibility again of doing it in the near future. For the sake of himself and the fans, he needs to either make it in the next couple of years or just come out and say that it will never happen instead of torturing everyone with it like he has for the past 15 years or so. Either do it or not, but don't string us along for another decade constantly waiting for something that isn't going to happen. So now that my rant is finished, that's my advice to those in the Pirates franchise that wish to do a fourth some day (Verbinski, Depp, Bruckheimer, etc.). Sit down now and pick out a year or two on down the line in which you would like to make it and then actively develop a script between now and then. Give yourselves a deadline. Teasing the fans to keep them interested is one thing and is perfectly understandable. Making false promises is just cruel though, even if you aren't consciously lying. Bottom line, either shut up about it and make it sometime over the next few years...........or don't do it at all. Most of us fans are tired of getting blue balled at the thought of seeing our favorite franchises return to the screen again.
I'd like to see Verbinski move on to make some

If that's your thing, play over at HSX. My rough guess? Pirates 3 - $405m. Spiderman 3 - $375m. Shrek 3 - $370m. All three are going to be crowd-pleasers. Harry's gonna conjure up over $300m too. The two movies that won't measure up to the above-mentioned sequels? The Fantastic Four sequel and the Transformers. The Silver Surfer will help, but I think a lot of people still have a bad taste in their mouths from the first one. As for the Transformers, geeks here notwithstanding, that particular phenomenon was a moment in time really for only a certain age range. The target teen audience for this is only slightly more prepped than they were for Grindhouse (which, BTW, I loved, but there were a lot of references that didn't quite connect if you didn't grow up in the era of the grindhouse). Or let me put it another - geekier - way. If these machines are so badass that nothing the best army on this planet can throw at 'em even slows 'em down, why the fuck do they need to transform into something else? Unless they can answer that question for people who don't know from Optimus Prime or Decepticons BEFORE they go to the theaters, the Transformers is going to be this year's Hulk.

The market is just too saturated this year and there is a finite number of dollars that's spent each summer. Plus, all the sequels just look like more of the same.

The point of cannibal island...
by Frijole

The island was used for SEVERAL prurposes. 1) To show the power of the Kraken. If Sparrow and crew are so keen to get off the open water to get away from the Kraken, that they'd rather beach on an island inhabited by aggressive savages, then the Kraken must be a nasty customer indeed. They could not show Jack and his boys sailing around willy nilly after it was revealed that big beastie had been sent after them... it would have diminished the impact and mystique and implied power of the monster. They had to go SOMEWHERE... so why not somewhere with substantial danger where FUN and EXCTIING scenes actually take place? And 2) Will needed to be able to catch up to them for the story to move forward. As far as I'm concerned it would have been far more dull to have the crew sitting around Tortuga getting loaded and humping hookers. This is a PG-13 movie after all. So AGAIN... the cannibal island sequence was HARDLY pointless.
Actually, I do not care for this motion picture.

I loved Dead Man's Chest. I thought it had a lot of balls because movies like that just aren't made for the general audience any more. The flicks hark back to the old stop-motion creature adventure movies.

...about these movies? I mean, they aren't pretending to be important or anything. They just want you to sit back and enjoy some piratey-silly action and spectacle.

I've enjoyed the heck out of the first two films. I'll be there in the theater for the third.

I totally agree. If they still made video games as good as Lucas Arts did back in the day (Night of the Tentacle is easily my favorite video game ever) I would actually still play video games. The games have so many great gags in them that the script will practically write itself.

Must be different. check out the release. LONDON (APRIL 27): The Weinstein Co. today announced that Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s highly anticipated Grindhouse double bill will be released as two separate movies in the U.K. Tarantino’s Death Proof will be released via Momentum Pictures/Dimension Films on September 21 with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror released at a later date to be confirmed shortly. Death Proof will screen In Competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, May 16-27 2007 continuing the festival’s long and successful collaboration with the filmmaker whose 1994 movie Pulp Fiction won the coveted Palme D’Or. Tarantino’s Death Proof is a white knuckle ride behind the wheel of a psycho serial killer’s roving, revving, racing death machine. Rodriguez’s Planet Terror is a heart-pounding trip to a town ravaged by a mysterious plague. Inspired by the unique distribution of independent horror classics of the sixties and seventies, these are two shockingly bold features replete with fake trailers, missing reels and plenty of exploitative mayhem. Rodriguez and Tarantino set out to make two very different, very complete movies which will be distributed separately internationally where the culture of grindhouses grinding out movies back to back is not familiar. Harvey Weinstein stated, “We are very proud of “Grindhouse,” which earned overwhelming rave reviews for its audaciousness and boldness. Based on US audience's positive reactions to Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof' and Robert Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' combined with their resistance to the three-hour running time, we’ve revised our UK release plans to allow audiences the chance to see the films separately, like they will be shown in all international territories. We are really excited about launching the new version of 'Death Proof' in Cannes and about the international release for both movies.”

Part one was watchable only due to Depp (a classic example of one actor elevating the material he is in and everyone else around him). Part 2 was a big letdown: too long, incoherent and busy without anything actually happening. If there is a similar letdown from Part 2 to Part 3 this movie will seriously suck. I can't possibly imagine what would be in this thing to make it 3 hours long.

These movies have some great visuals-like Davy Jones-pure genuis. But as for the films, they seem to drag on and on. That should not be the case for action/adventure films such as these. Spielberg should have done them. He at least would have cut the fat out.

(especially ones that clock in at 2.5+ hours) NUMEROUS times in the theatre. And for POTC to have the grosses that they have, they are obviously getting INSANE amounts of repeat business. I'm not saying that high grosses make a movie "good", but in today's A.D.D. culture, the general public must find these movies to be the OPPOSITE of "tedious" or else they wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are...

I loved the sequel mostly because it exceeded my expectations, which were on par with sequels like Temple of Doom, which involve the main characters taking an irrelevant side adventure before they return to the real story in the 3rd movie. DMC actually developed the plotline and filled existing plot holes and characters out rather than doing that; I was impressed. Stop hatin'!

sorry darth binks but if you think the second film hasn't damaged this franchise you are crazy. I fucking loved dead mans chest...absolutely loved it but everyone I know pretty much thought it sucked and i just do not see any enthusiasm for this one....i think this is going to be a huge disappointment money wise.....considering how much they have spent.....i think transformers is being under estimated by a lot of people...there is an awful lot of goodwill coming from it aside from the usual internet nonsense......

The movie broke record after record to become the third highest grossing movie of all time. You do not get that kind of take when you aren't dealing in SERIOUS repeat business. I am perfectly aware that lots of people didn't like the movie. But to think that minority speaks for the movie going public is just asinine when you look at the numbers. The world LOVES these movies.
