I think the show is popular enough to stick around for at least another whole season. I think if anything sinks it, it'll have to do with this Alec Baldwin crap. It'll be a shame if this airing out of celebrity laundry ruins a show I enjoy. NBC must really be up for keeping this show on. They must think they have a hit or at least a potential hit on their hands, if they're willing to force their star to stick to the contract.

...I'm not hating on the show. If it focuses on the funny it's going to be a classic. BTW I made my prediction WAY before the Baldwin crap. My prediction has more to do with the Sorkin-Effect(tm). (I know he's not involved with show, but you can still kill a show with idealogical mis-steps.) A couple of episodes ago Fey's character was relieved to find that her future boyfriend was NOT a Christian, just an alchoholic (thank God). Funny stuff. That, coupled with with well known liberals and Democratic supporters = The Sorkin-Effect(tm). You drive away 1/2 of the audience right up front which causes a ratings v. cost-of-production disaster long term. Now don't get all in a tizzy with the "He's a liberal bashing conservative!" hate posts. I think the Limbaugh-Effect(tm) is going to kill the 1/2 Hour News Hour. Sorry, it's the only conservative one I could think of.

the joke wasn't that he was christian it was that he went to church during odd days of the week like if he had to go to confession that much your first date might consist of helping him sew a sweater made of human hair. Tina is pretty smart remember the "I love america" episode where she said something about electric cars and gay marriage then winked at the camera, that was perfect. BTW i'm pretty much as conservative as it gets when it comes to people who actually own televisions.

I saw Alec getting interviewed on some show (maybe Charlie Rose?) and he was actually very honest about his career. He believes early on, he didn't capitalize on every opportunity for work, and instead tried to be too discriminating about the roles he chose. I think he made the comparison to someone like Kevin Bacon, who was willing to be in tons of movies just to get work and get his name out there and be seen. It was kind of refreshing to hear an actor basically saying if he wasn't so stupid, he could've been a bigger star. I think that's probably true.

They need to stay together. The news is probably that Jan is pregnant, which would be crazy, but awesome. Also, what happened to the guy who plays Oscar? I know he's doing some crappy show on comedy central, but did he leave for good?

Yeah, that joke was a bit annoying to me, but there isn't too much of that on the show. Among the few times I've seen some political jokes, they're often making fun of her characters' views as much as other peoples. My favorite: After irrationally firing her crush's girlfriend, Baldwin says "And you still think a woman should be president?" That Christian joke was half about her character's lack of any religion, though the other half seemed to be based on the assumption everyone finds "church people" crazy... Studio 60's issue was entire plotlines revolving around that stuff.

it's one thing if a show like studio 60 fails for a multitude of reasons, and conservatives fall all over themselves to claim it was because of alienating the christian audience. even though I don't agree that that was the biggest cause of it (considering sorkin did a pretty good job of pointing out that he wasn't demonizing christianity in general, just ultra-conservative factions of it). I think the show was just too wordy, too much like the west wing minus the politics. I loved it, and I still hold out hope that it will find an audience and stay, but considering how big shows like deal or no deal and the bachelor are, it's not surprising that a show like Studio 60 has no audience. as for 30 Rock, for god sake, it's a show produced by lorne michaels starring tina fey and alec baldwin. did we expect it to be a comedic version of Touched by an Angel? did you ever SEE weekend update? this show is not losing some segment of its audience by not pandering to middle american christians. it never had them! it's a ridiculous wacky show about a comedy show in new york. its audience consists of people like me, and I would much rather date an alcoholic than someone who goes to church every day. a show does not have to play to everyone to be successful, it just has to be good enough that the people who do get it, keep tuning in, and get their friends to tune in as well. O'Reilly kills int he rating, and do you think he worries that his opinions might offend me? fuck no. he does his thing and has his select viewership. but if a half-hour comedy show makes a christian joke, it's circling the drain? come on. I got paypal bud, let's put money on 30 Rock being cancelled by this time next year. even with the Baldwin fiasco that is going to be on the View tomorrow, I'll still put $20 on it. if he stays, great. if he leaves, it just makes it cheaper than it already is to produce.

YES! A taker, I don't have a Pay Pal, but I'm sure we can make some arrangement. Oh, and I hate O'Reilly and, yes, he kills in the cable-verse, but that is still a small world compared to network. I think we've argued the Sorkin/Christian thing before, so I'm not going to rehash. I'm just giving you a general vibe that I'm getting off of 30 Rock. Don't get me wrong, I love much of the show. A lot of it works. Some of it is clunky, but for the most part, I think it's got legs...until ideology starts to creep in. Hey, maybe the Baldwin thing will kill it, in which case, I'm bummed. While I hate his politics (and I guess now I hate how he treats little girls), I think he's one of the best damned actors out there. I look at how owned Glengarry Glen Ross for the few minutes that he was in it and I'm still amazed. "COFFEE'S FOR CLOSERS!" But the point is, I'm not saying that you've got to be milk-toast entertainment. Scrubs does well, My Name Is Earl pulls it off, The Office is legend, hell even Seinfeld poked fun at Christians. (You see I'm not a big fan of reality TV either!) Eh, I'm running long and why waste the bandwith. I'll email Herc and see if he'd be interested in arbitrating.

I do think that for someone like Fey or the writers of the show, there's just inherent comedic value sometimes, in the conservative christian agenda in america. no reason not to mine it just because you might offend the 3 or 4 conservative christians that tune in to 30 Rock. almost all great comedy is gonna offend someone. seinfeld may seem to be a good example of a show that didn't really offend anyone, but that was partly because it was more irreverant and weird than topical, and also, there were lots of conservative groups that had big problems with the promiscuity and moral abiguity of the characters. I just don't want to see comedy laden with the political pandering that the rest of society seems to be mired in. but hey, it's only $20, and it's as good a thing to bet on as anything, I guess.

What am I not getting? I've really tried to give this show a chance, but every time I try to watch an episode, I can only get through about 10 minutes. Alec Baldwin usually reels off a couple of chuckle-worthy lines, but I don't find anyone else on that show even remotely funny. There's a lot of love for the show with the critics and on the message boards, so tell me, what's going on here that I'm just not seeing?

You can't really explain comedy. Once you try to, it's not funny anymore. The show can be uneven at times, but there's a lotta funny stuff in there. But maybe it's just not your kinda humor. For example, aren't we on a talk back by a guy who thought Andy Richter's show was the best sitcom on TV?

The real thing that annoys me about Studio 60, and I think is the reason its not doing so well, is how much these people talk about important issues. Behind the scenes at a sketch comedy show is the premise. Many people wanted to see THAT. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think Lorne Michaels and his cast constantly sit around and struggle with these kind of issues all the time. The annoyance with the religious issue for me is the fact that some of these shows look at it from the perspective of the writers, like religious folks are some kind of odd little faction of people that the "regular people" should try to understand. And his christian characters often seem to have a label that says "See, I'm a christian character! Sorkin can create characters like me who aren't negative stereotypes! See?"

I just can't sit through long stretches of mediocre comedy to get to those one or two really funny jokes. This is why I haven't watched SNL in over a decade, and why I've never been able to get into Curb Your Enthusiasm. The Office cracks me up, I loved (and am still in mourning over) Arrested Development, South Park, Entourage and Reno 911 all make me laugh on a consistent basis, but when I try to watch 30 Rock, most of the jokes just seem to fall flat. Something I discovered on my Office DVDs is that when I watch shows with the Commentary over them, it's like I'm watching an all new episode. The commentaries are funny and just well done. Plus, you're not stuck with like the 2nd Assistant Director for the 2nd Unit and the Costume Designer, you get Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, BJ Novak, etc.

It's flawed from the get-go. I might be able to see these characters (I say characters even though they all seem like one character) behind the scenes of the network news. Why a sketch comedy show? Pretty much the same as every episode I tried to watch, a few chuckles (Clear...like Wonder Woman's. yea, that was funny) but no really big laughs. I guess the problem is I don't find the page or the slob writer funny, Tracy Jordan is, at best, only mildly amusing to me (although, I did like when his buddies said "yea...we're not doin' that"), and frankly, I find a lot of the joke's too obvious ( What about anger?...I DON'T WANT TO DO ANGER). Oh, and as far as Entourage goes, Jeremy Pivin is Hilarious, End of story.

Saying Studio 60 had no audience is a misconception, the ratings weren't great, less then half of what the incrediblely formulaic CSI Miami got, but it consistantly managed to pull about 7 to 8 million viewers a week, as good or better than anything they've put in that time slot since. 30 Rock, by the way, is NBCs lowest rated Thursday night show (it actually gets lower ratings than Black Donnelys and about the same as Kidnapped, 2 shows NBC gave quick hooks to). I'm npt saying I want 30 Rock cancelled, I could care less either way, but I do find it curious that of the 2 shows, the one that's probably getting cancelled is the one that consistantly got better ratings.

That was one of those episodes where certain moments were just on the borderline of getting TOO uncomfortable, but there were enough great gags to pull it back, specifically Michael's video, Jim and Dwight's dueling impressions, and Angela acting the complete bitch as the customer service rep.

One of the most endearing qualities about the American Office is how cartoonish each character is. I still don't know why people choose discredit on this account (as if realism equals quality) but I swear to God the most realistic character in this show is Andy. I used work with a guy who had the same temperment, as if his attitude didn't mature beyond a high school sophomore. Now I romm with two guys who are pretty much the same. So if you need realism in this show just look at Andy. On a sidenote because of this show I can't stop giggling like an idiot when people joke "that's what she said."

There's no way any sane man would turn her down for Pam. They made her too intelligent, sweet, and funny. And Rashida Jones is just way too pretty. For those TBers that saying she's not, she a model, and one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People". Pam is cute, but she's no model. I simply can no longer root for Pam/Jim to be together. I feel bad for Pam, but she turned Jim down, and Karen is the better choice. The only way I could see Jim/Pam again, was for Karen to decide Jim's not good enough for her, and turn him down instead. That's the guy reaction of course, females have already identified with Pam, and will root for her no matter how inferior she is. Damn, I'm going to miss Karen. It's because this show is so well written, that I can't help loving these characters and caring about what happens to them. The fact I'm writing about a tv romance is a testament to the fantastic talents behind the characters.
