Nightwatch was a destestable piece of claptrap that gathered a cult following solely because Hollywood movies are somehow worse. Just an example of a movie starved - or story starved -audience desperately tonguing up scraps from around the world because U.S. studios aren't making it happen any more.

But I liked it BECAUSE it was so un-Hollywood. One of the reasons a lot of folk didn't like it. It's morally ambiguous, it doesn't clearly define what's going on or tie everything up neatly in any way, it gives you a glimpse into this amazingly rich world, and somehow makes it all so painfully real that it's just captivating.

But then again I have genuinely heard some idiots argue that it was a bad film because the the lead actor was ugly, everyone dressed badly and the bad guy got away at the end.

Missing the fucking point much?

Hope it'll play near-bye. Nightwatch was a hypnotic wild ride. It was like hopping into the mind of the director and being thrust through a rollercoaster ride with his synapses. Crazy.
The only thing that took me out of the film the first time I saw it was the odd video game part at the end. But then the seconde time it made more sense. Well it just felt right that is. The frenetic editing of the war from the past to the present situation ends with the kid running to Anton. Then this is where the video game piece is intercut. It's the Dark's final move and it was all orchestrated. Pretty cool now that I'm used to the editing style.
I really dug the mythology. Pretty cool, pretty cool.

Well, that poster is cool, but doesnt quite capture the movie at all. They are still trying to sell these as big fantasy movies, which they really arent-not exactly. Despite some overused cgi, I think the Nightwatch films are trying to be character based pieces and on that point, they are somewhat successfull, but like George Newman says above, there is an indifference to the whole thing. Now I enjoyed Nightwatch, but felt that it often waivered in quality and in coherence. It was built upon an interesting concept, but felt like the first episode of a t.v. series or something. It felt very incomplete, but not just in the way the first part of something is, but rather there wasnt enough substance to support the obvious emotional and thematic gravity of the ending. I should have been devestated by Yegor's choice in the end, and Anton's clear failure which almost seemed destined. I wasnt, mostly because I didnt completely understand how such a decision came about and Yegor had not been clearly explored as a character. There wasnt quite enough clarity there to really make the fantastic concept come to life. But I enjoyed it enough to pick up a copy, and have watched it a few times since. Its a fun movie, and I was intrigued by the character of Anton. So now we have Daywatch and Harry is right in what he says. It is a superior sequel, and it indeed illuminates the first. It defines Anton better, and gives us a greater look at the way the world of the Light and the Dark interact. The vampire neighbors arent just cameos to show us Anton interacts with members of the Dark, but they are their own people, with troubles and stories of their own. The "chalk of destiny" which seems like a silly concept is handled well(for a while anyway) as a symbolic representation of Anton's great desire to right his past sins. You have all the characters of the first film returning, save perhaps the young female vampire from the first film, and characters that were shortchanged the first time-like Olga, are given much more to do here. Yes, the visuals are better, as are the production values, but this is at the same time a lighter, funnier movie and it has a better, dramatic undercurrent running through it. We can feel the inevitability and lack of choices that seem to characterize these people. The movie has a distinctive Russian voice, but its not a doomy gloomy film like the first. So, yes Harry is right, its a stronger, better film. However, all of the problems Night Watch had-how to end, pacing, and being able to consistently establish that emotional connection are problems here too. Especially the film's ending. On one hand I liked it, on another it relies so much upon the first movie, that unless you actually view them as two halves of one whole, the ending of this seems like a terrible copout. There are still characters who remain very ambiguous as to what makes them tick. Zavulon is often more like a crochety old man trying to be hip, than a dark ruler. And that initial decision to make him so it what I think makes Daywatch seem fresher. Here are fantastic creatures maintaining a kind of uneasy peace and eeking out an invisible existence by making use of near-poverty level buildings, equipment, etc. Were this a period piece the two sides would have elaborate castles, here they haunt dance halls and shabby offices. BUT, when we never clearly see the dark side of Zavulon, sometimes he seems like NOTHING More than a confused old man. Still, Im complaining, when the reality is that this movie is a great improvement of the first, and shows alot of skill and imagination on the part of the director and team who made it. It shows great promise, and I look forward to The Dusk Watch. Where the story will go from here though, I have no clue.

i can't say i loved nightwatch, but i appreciated its russian quirkyness. speaking of which, they should make a movie version of the game STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (okay, technically it would be a remake because apparently Tarkovsky did a film on which the STALKER story was based). that would beat the pants off of crappy video game remakes like Resident Evil and Doom.

I watched it Saturday, and was hugely disappointed. I really liked Night Watch and looked forward to this one, but half the time I couldn't make sense of what the fuck was going on (might have been the language barrier, but more likely it was the flashy filmmaking). New stuff was introduced then abandoned (2nd level gloom?), there were way too many characters, primitive plotting, action sequences lasting for about 5 seconds.. And could someone please explain the implications of the ending? The movie might make perfect sense if you read the books or saw the movie 5 times, but I'm hard-pressed to give it even a second chance.

I really wanted to like nightwatch , but i just couldnt get into it -too superficial. The whole thing just seemed like a show case for visual effects. You could almost hear the animators ,riggers, compositors and renderers all singing "look what weeeeeeeeeeeeeee can do !" in thick russian accents. Still, i'll check out daywatch ,but i aint expecting much other than great vfx.

I still need to check out Nightwatch, personally. I had purchased it for my mother last year and she loved it so I'll be doing the same with Day Watch. The problem with me is that I read the books which are NOTHING like the premise of the movies. The Nightwatch and Daywatch movies only cover the first and second half of the Nightwatch book. The Daywatch and Duskwatch books continue the story of Anton and Svetlana and the daughter they have. Plus one thing that bothered me that I heard from the first movie is that Yegor is Anton's son, which he isn't in the books. Meh! I'm a stickler for this stuff. Time for me to go get some coffee. It's too early.

I like the way Anton got sucked into the whole world of Nightwatch by his own, somewhat nasty, doing. Sometimes a bit confusing and a tiny budget but some incredible images. It's all about ideas.

Which sucked. Daywatch was WAY cooler, and way cooler than this poster. Except how is it going to be a Trilogy. Daywatch ends in an almost final way. I guess I should read the books, but I never have time to read anything other than work related material. Oh well.

Nightwatch was great. Such a relief from the scummy bullshit fantasy cinema churned out for the brainless masses. Amazing how something original like this goes totally over the heads of the general public. Also loved the gritty European feel of it - hope we get more of the same in Daywatch.

While the film as a whole was pretty decent, so many cringe moments such as every cliche sfx technique in the book was thrown in. Whats with the truck crashing into the dude in the trailer? Pisses me off that Unkle's 'Rabbit in your headlights' video clip is being ripped off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Z3ClCwcCvdQ

but it is exactly my feelings after I saw both Day and Night. There is some interesting stuff in the middle of a huge pile of mess. Sure it is very different to how Hollywood would have done these stories, but different and much better are not the same thing.
