Lost might have it back

Yeah, there's been a lot of bitching about the way that the producers have handled Lost, but I think ever since Paolo took a dirt nap, the show has seemed to regain the momentum that it has sorely lacked. They just might make it after all.

Don't be offended but this whole theory seems to be based on the fact that Kate found a little toy plane to be of importance. Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't, but have there been any clues/evidence that any of that is connected to Claire's implant, and that Claire's implant even suggests that Jack has one? The suggestion that Jack might have an implant is the most logical part of Herc's theory (why would Ben put all his faith in Juliet having the power - or will - to control Jack?), but everything we've learned about Kate so far suggests that she isn't hiding much (eg. only 2 weeks ago she had a big fight with Juliet and dislocated her shoulder: maybe Juliet didn't know about this supposed union existed. And Kate was definitely on the plane, and in custody for murder, so the plan would have to have been inconcievably elaborate).

Also, the fact that Jack spent almost his entire time in Australia with his dad's dead body would suggest that his dad, like Eko's brother, is dead.

I love speculating, and reading the speculation of others, but I think the evidence on the show and the clues should be a bit more compatible with each other.

LOST finale

Apr 18th, 2007

Fron syfyportal, "Producers have planned some major surprises in the upcoming final episodes of "Lost," but unfortunately, none of those surprises will be a new time slot for the show that has struggled in the ratings, but still remains one of television's top 25 programs. TV Guide's amazing scoopmaster Michael Ausiello released some very interesting details in his Wednesday "Ask Ausiello" columm. "Get ready to clutch your pearls: I'm told there will be at least five -- count 'em, five -- deaths on 'Lost' during the month of May," Ausiello said, without going into detail on who they might be. To make things better, "Lost" executive producer Carlton Cuse told Ausiello that the season finale will finally feature the matchup that viewers have been screaming at their television sets for all along. It seems that Jack (Matthew Fox) and Locke (Terry O'Quinn) will finally meet at sun-up in front of the ol' saloon. "Let's just say the end of the season features a showdown between Jack and Locke -- a showdown long anticipated anda showdown with an extremely significant outcome for the future of the castaways," Cuse said."

Or does she just *THINK* she is because Ben is so good at making you think what he wants you to do is what you actually wanted to do yourself?

Last week Claire got sick, and Juliet claimed that it's because people who get pregnant or give birth on the island get sick and die. The twist at the end was that Juliet and Ben were making Claire sick to gain the trust of the survivors. They achieved this by putting an implant into Claire when they kidnapped her during season 1. we only found out about this last week.

Incidentally, people have been getting confused and assuming that Claire was sick because of the island, but (as Juliet said in her flashback) only people who concieve on the island die, so Claire, Rousseau and (depending on who the dad is) Sun should not be ill (implants permitting).

I agree that the Desmond/Penny relationship being the only one that really works, though, and I think that might be kind of intentional. Personally, I think the WHOLE shebang is about Desmond. Why? He's the only one that has a legitimate reason to want to get the hell off the island, and that reason is Penny. Think about it - who else has anything but a crappy life to go back to once they get off the island?

I was thinking something along the same lines of Kate being some kind of plant. She seems to pretend everything around her bothers her. She even throws herself in the line of fire when not necessary. Remember the kidnapping/others intro -- was she getting new orders. I don't know about the implant or the plane. The plane especially -- it's just a plane. But I think Kate could easily be a plant. Oh, and she is EVIL.

Having it revealed that one of the most important characters has been a "CTU mole" on the island WOULD BE part of the overall story arc. We're not talking about killing off Shanon here....Kate being a mole would be something that people would constantly dissect through every scene in the past 3 seasons. EVERY one of her actions would be scrutinized. All those close-up shots of Kate's expressions would now be suddenly said to be "an act all this long!!". Even the actress would freak out, knowing that it would be no different than a "POOF, it was all a dream!" "Jumping the shark" would be renamed "Kate's Shaggy Dog Story"

I think at this point we are leading up to the big Jacob reveal at the end of the season. Jacob has been mentioned more and more in the past couple weeks. I think that Jacob has to be someone we have already met or the Big Jacob reveal wouldn't really matter. If he is a new character then it wouldn't be that big of a surprise. My bets are on Christian Shepard (but why would they need another spinal surgeon (aka Jack) if they already had Christian?), Anthony Cooper, or Jack (that would be awesome) or Locke(also awesome). Ben could also be Jacob and is using the persona of Jacob to control the Others.

This showdown between Locke and Jack could lead to a death. . . but I think it won't be Jack that dies. I think it'll be Locke. I don't buy that everyone comes back to life on the island. But if Locke DOES have a special connection, than how badass would it be for Jack to kill him in the last episode. Then, in Season 4, Locke can come back from the dead, Jesus-style. Plus, since he's not actually dead, no need for a flashback episode of his own. . . That would rule, as his coming back from the dead would cement a leadership position among the Losties and the Others (no matter who he's supposidely betrayed).

Herc's Kate theory is as laughable as those of Doc Jensen at Entertainment Weekly. Cooper is the Real Sawyer obviously. The only question there is how does Sawyer discover this and what will he do? Juliet is up to no good according to the podcast so I hope we don't have to wait too long to know her objectives. Tonight should be interesting based on the preview clips I've seen.

I dont think Herc's theory on Kate will pan out for 2 reasons: 1) IF the whole general arc was pre-planned from the get go, how could they have pinned such a major setup on Jack, when that character wasnt initially supposed to live through the pilot. 2) If the toy airplane is the trigger, why would it have figured into Kate's flashback all they way back to shortly after offing her dad? If the Others/Jacob are really only into taking people who are "good", they wouldn't have tolerated their operative Kate going all vigilante on daddy... LOST is not back--it never left.

I'm not sure why Moriarty has "Wherefore art Juliet" as the title to this story, but if he means "where is Juliet," he's making the same mistake that tons of people make with that line from Shakespeare. When Juliet says, "Wherefore art thou Romeo," she doesn't mean "where are you" but "WHY are you Romeo?" Like, "Why'd you have to be ROMEO, a Montague? Why couldn't you be from any other family, huh?" Sorry, just a pet peeve.

In fact, I can only think of one zombie type who folks readily jumped in and followed (the Man Jesus, if you believe the stories).

Most others have been more concerned with eating brains than any kind of organized form of leadership.

Oh, and Kate's not an agent or whatever. She's just a fickle little girl who can't decide between the good boy who loves her and the bad boy who makes her wet.

I predict that the more human and sociable Sawyer becomes, the less he'll appeal to her.

Thats a good call and very well could be. One of the most frustrating things about LOST to me are the potential plot threads that end up going nowhere. I could come up with a whoel laundry list of them just from this season. Chief among them, Jack playing football with the others and appearing to be brainwashed then we learn that he was just hanging out having a good ol time until he could leave. Wow, what a letdown. The thing about Sawyer having an implant and the not really having one was another frustrating thing. If it turned out that he did actually have an implant it might make his time spent with the others a little more meaningful to the overall plot.

As much as I like the theory it's pretty implausible. The plane was nothing more than a toy that was a treasured/symbolic possession from Kate's past. It was a filler episode, nothing more. Should it EVER be revealed to be something more then it'll be like TASG in the Pearl toilet - made up on the fly NOT pre-planned! As for Kate being a mole prior to boarding 815, well it's possible. Her FBs to date do not indicate that she is, but it's possible some intervention took place... esp when you consider that she's the only one who claims to have been awake when the plane went down and saw "the whole thing". However, if she's possibly an Other then i'm seriously going to be scrutinizing the start of season 3 - especially her conversation with Ben and some of the other Others once "captured". It also doesn't explain her shock upon discovering the fake beard and theatrical make up. Something tells me it's a bullshit theory but i'll humour it... for now... (largely because any episode that revisits the pilot is awesome IMHO)

"Should it EVER be revealed to be something more then it'll be like TASG in the Pearl toilet - made up on the fly NOT pre-planned!" Why is this constantly seen as a bad thing? Writers of fiction will tell you that they don't have the book completely mapped out when they begin, and all sorts of initially insignificant details push the narrative in new, rewarding directions. It is really frustrating to me that so many Lost and BSG fans have some bizarre conception of writing as a perfectly mapped-out, mathematical process, like some bloody lab experiment. Stories often largely write themselves...

Uhh...this is cool...

Jacob, of the bible of course, was the first person to refer to God as The Shepherd. I love that.

Other interesting facts about Jacob of the bible, which, arguably, may be a place to start when thinking about who the Jacob of Lost may be. Recall, there are quite a few instances in the show where biblical references and religious references become quite apparent. Anyone remember that Charlie episode where he was going kinda insane because of withdrawal? It was packed with biblical LITERAL imagery:

-Jacob loved Rachel

This one I love: Rachel was apparently barren, but later amazingly gave birth to Joseph and Benjamin after failing to become pregnant for years.

-the tribe of Benjamin's women and children were all killed, and the remaining members of the tribe could not longer proliferate. The historical solution they came up with was to kill the men from another sub-tribe and take their women and children.

Lost is fun, eh? Seriously though, I'm Muslim.

1) He's pulling a Clooney following movie offers ... 2) There is bugger all left to tell of his boring ass life ... 3) He was going to die in the pilot anyway so he's done well to last this long ... 4) They're making Sawyer more of a people person, grooming him to be Jack's replacement as leader (unless it'll go the other way and HE will die for reason 1) ... 5) He's got a two-part FB episode season finale to himself, indicating they're going to wrap up his story for good. As a character and actor, I quite like Jack... I just wish the writers had made him as interesting as his father, placing more emphasis on his healing abilities than his shitty marriage. Like we care.

looks like it will happen, looks like the first part of my theory panned out. Now, perhaps once Cooper is dealt with(and I really dont think this will mean being killed by Sawyer or Locke- most likely, they will both choose not to kill him but my guess is Smokey or something else will take him out anyway)then Locke may start to reveal to Sawyer what it is he learned while with the Others. Also, we havent seen Rousseau, but shes supposed to be in at least four of the remaining episodes. Sooo, Im starting to wonder more about a theory that places her in cahoots with Locke, and possibly the submarine isnt destroyed, and that she has taken it elsewhere. Perhaps an agreed upon location. Im sure that Locke is the one to have learned the "shocking information" regarding 815 and Sawyer is the one he confides in,(perhaps this based off the theory of Sawyer being able to overcome his past without resorting to killing Cooper). This information, in Locke's mind might facilitate a change in the way the 815ers are living and how they need to approach the Others. A rumor that is being thrown out there with the Jack/Locke showdown is the fact that those on the beach will be facing a rift, with one faction behind Jack and another behind sawyer, but the rift will be at the prompting of a third party. Locke? Juliette? Now, if the rift is between Jack and Sawyer, where does that place Locke? On the Others team, or more likely with Sawyer, and most likely Kate. Its long be supposed that Locke would be the one to join the Others, but his obsession is the Island, and if the Others arent following the laws of the Island(or are directly opposed to it) then Locke will obviously be pitted against them. Jack on the other hand is now linked with Juliette, and unless we see a major change in her character, it seems most likely that if Jack survives the end of season 3(hey, it seems possible he might not) then he will probably end up on the side of the Others. Ive been speculating this would all lead to a Jack/Locke showdown, but Im not convinced that the show can afford to get rid of either one. It seems to me the mystery of the island will end up requiring both "the man of science" and "the man of faith". I actually really like the idea that was suggested of having Locke be killed, and then his return at the start of season 4. Perhaps, if this a mysterious quality of the island, then maybe Locke would have learned it prior to any showdown. I suppose we will see.

The writers even said it in the beginning that when they introduced the characters they had a plan for them that we hadnt totally seen yet.

For the record, oftentimes, stories form organically... writers see that certain characters are playing better off of eachother than others, new avenues present themselves, etc. Lost is no different. The writers have said that the big mysteries they have the answers to, but the the little parts of the journey are something they come up with only a season or so in advance.

Im not convinced, and wasnt when it happened, that hes really dead(blood spewing and seizuring considered). They lingered on shots of his body far too long after the incident. He also said he actually knew John Locke. Not in the way the others have learned about everyone, but actually met him in John's "past life" off the island, when he was in the wheelchair. Is there a connection there we arent aware of. If Mikhail isnt dead, and the fence a way for the search party to think him dead, did Locke know about it before it happened?

Don't get me wrong, while I admit I hope that Lost has a pre-determined beginning, middle and end, I appreciate that the journey may take several paths with the destination being the same. So as for writing on the fly goes, it's no bad thing (Libby's early departure is clearly a work around considering her story is now going to be told in other people's FBs). I also think Expose is one of Lost's best episodes - self-reflective, self-aware, very funny and TASG's toilet activities were brilliantly woven into his story (a testament to the writers' abilities as well as a wink and a cheeky FO to the fans). I'm just disputing *Herc's* theory that the toy plane was some kind of pre-planned implant trigger. If they decide one day that they want it to be then i'm cool with that but it will NOT be pre-planned (as Herc seems to think) and I seriously hope it doesn't create contradictions elsewhere that can't be, at some point, explained.

PLUS: We've already had one cliffhanger this season where someone's reunited with their long lost father. That big reveal in the finale would be fairly underwhelming. I don't know, we'll see I guess.

Hyphin, it's good when people come up with name origins and history etc. Even so, I think the writers just do it for intertextual reasons, and not for overall significance of character traits or plots etc. Look at Locke for example: in many cases, he seems to be the antithesis of the real John Locke. Same goes for Bakhunin, Rousseau, Kelvin etc. And as far as I know, David Hume couldn't travel through time, though, obviously, he was from Scotland :D

Regarding the Charlie flashback, I suggest that we might find out that it wasn't Ethan who hanged him from the tree.

The Jacob idea is something I found intriguing when I first heard it: that it isn't a guy, but something else. Maybe he's even the "box" that Ben talks about. The fact that he can personally cure cancer (as was suggested last week) seems to me that he/it is responsible for the deterministic events, like everyone being connected in the past. That said, that would go against a few things like "He's a great man" etc.

of Jack dying only if it adds the plot of Sayid and some Losties splitting from the rest. Perhaps the others, Locke, and Sawyer/kate. V. Sayid, Jin, Sun etc. and Hurley and the rest on the beach. Not necessarily a versus situation just split camps after their leader is killed. But personally I'd rather see Sawyer die before Jack. I think Tom and Juliet will be killed because they become expendable once Locke is on Ben's side. I also think Claire dies trying to save Charlie you know like a weird thing Desmond couldn't get there to stop. Another theory that would interest me is if Locke thinks he is one with the island and can't die but someone kills him and he bleeds slowly and says something to Ben about a big secret.

The whole point of that episode was to enforce the fact that Ben can pretty much get anyone to do what he wants them to do and make them think it's their idea.

Destroying the Sub is probably the linchpin of the story when Penny turns up on the island with her friends from the arctic looking for Desmond. Which in turn begs the question about her father being part of the Dharma initiative.

Yes, that's pretty much correct...too bad the writers forgot about Desmond's sail boat. The existence of the sail boat means either Ben was lying about the reason he wanted the sub destroyed, or the writers are morons. Obviously, I'm picking the later of the two choices.

What's that you say? Maybe only the submarine can escape whatever it is keeping people near the island? Nope, sorry. What about the little dingy Michael and Walt left on? Obviously surface ships can leave the island too...provided you leave via the right heading, of course. Two weeks have passed since Michael and Walt left on that little boat...there were no obvious supplies stockpiled on that thing. If they hadn't escaped the island within a day or two, we'd know about it. Of course, the writers have completely forgotten about that plot line too.

He then goes and finds James, convicing him to come see Cooper. They both start to beat the shit out of him when Ford realises he can't do it, he's a changed man now. Smokey takes out Cooper. Locke returns to the beach and starts a preachy thing to the castaways and Jack confronts him, backed my Sayid. Boat vs submarine
by Leopold Scotch
Apr 18th, 2007

I don't think the inconsistency is by accident. It's a bit like Ben getting cancer. Everyone whined when that came up, because Rose got cured and he didn't. But the writers have acknowledged that it is an inconsistency that even Ben doesn't understand, and that it'll probably be dealt with in the future.

Off the top of my head, concerning the boat, Ben told Michael that he would indeed be able to get away, but that he'd never be able to return, try as he might. The sub, on the other hand, is able to return. It probably has the proper sensory equipment or something. Why should Ben let Juliet and Jack leave on a boat that he's not likely to get back if they went to so much trouble trying to get it in the first place (remember one of their team was killed in the process)?

Is Jacob. Could you imagine all the wasted angst if Jack were to die only to have his father revealed as the big bad?? The writers would never do that, they LOVE their daddy issues.

AND WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HANSO?!

And also, I do think that Sawyer will turn down the chance to kill Locke's Dad, but I think Locke will kill him. Locke gave that man so many chances, and he fucked him every. single. time. Locke can only take so much. Either that or they're both hesitate and let something else take care of him. Needless to say, Anthony Cooper is not long for that Island.

You realize this is a television show, right? And that the writers don't just write "cool things"...or kill people off just to show "they have balls"? They have to answer to studio execs who are actually funding the show. And those studio execs have to answer to advertisers, who want ratings. And killing off the main character of your show (and, yes, Jack is the main character) doesn't usually bode well for ratings. And studio execs don't go for that. (Killing off supporting people...or ugly hobbits...yes, that works)

The end.

p.s. just because they were going to kill the character in the premiere, when it would have been a guest star one ep. appearance, doesn't mean that it's the same thing to kill him off three seasons later when he's an established main character.

p.p.s. The end again.

and I agree the show would not purposefully kill off the main character (which Jack is) for the sake of shock tactics (and as far as I know Fox hasn't been charged with drink driving either) but if the guy wants to leave the show because of movie offers... and his contract allows it ...they can't really stop him... so I'm just suggesting the *possibility* that Sawyer is being prepped to take over as lead character/hunk while Jack's storyline could be wrapped up with this two-parter. Personally, I hope he stays with the show til the end, likewise for Kate, Sawyer and Locke but who knows...

They're not going to kill Jack... or are they?
by frazzle dazzle
Apr 18th, 2007
01:54:17 PM
No, probably not. I don't think I'd want them to for that matter. But if the rumored confrontation is between Locke and Jack I do think the writers are just ballsy enough to kill Jack and have Sawyer take his place. Remember how Hurley was grooming Sawyer to become the leader in Jack's absence only to have Jack return in the next episode? I thought that was pretty strange at the time, but what if it was part of their larger plan? Cue LOST scary/suspenseful music...

Well yeah, writing is not mathematical, but good writing IS mapped out. No, not every single word. The problem comes in when a writer tries to present an explanation by changing the meaning of something else that has already happened. It cheapens everything it touches and it insults the reader/viewer.

I don't believe for one second that the show had NIkki and Paolo in mind when they wrote season one and we the viewers were on the edge of our seats, watching the mysteries of the island unfold, only to cheapen those events and the emotions by having Nikki and Paolo "been there, done that".

Could Rousseau be the one who hanged Charlie from the tree? She may have mistook him for an Other (as she did with Sayid) or did it intentionally (having found an unconscious Charlie who'd been knocked out by Ethan) to create hostile relations between the survivors and the Others (as she did with the black smoke and Aaron's attempted abduction)? If something along these lines is revealed then maybe both sides have been manipulated by Rousseau all along, leading to a possible truce at some point? As I say, just a thought...

There's something huge I think everyone is missing. I heard one of the producers mention in a podcast that there's even something big from the first episode that people haven't noticed yet..although that was some time ago so maybe it's been figured out by now... anyway I'm thinking there is going to be an identity crisis amongst the Losties or something about there being the people who landed in LA and what's on the island are psychic echos of some kind, ok yeh kinda ridiculous I know but I'll put money on there being something to do with alternate or transferred conscious' and that 815 has either been recovered crashed in the ocean with no survivors or that it landed safely.

I think you're wrong, if you saw in the most recent Juliet episode, they go talk to Mikhail after the plain had crashed and you can see a bunch of streaming news on the TVs with ticker tapes saying about how the plane was lost over the Pacific and it never landed. As for the "thing everyone missed in season one" they talked about that in the most recent podcast and said there's nothing from season one that hasn't been covered or expanded on.

Last night I rewatched a movie that I discovered as a child sitting in a dusty corner of the local video shop, Paperhouse. If you've never seen it, it is about an english girl who comes down with glandular fever and is bedridden for a few weeks. During this time she discovers that she can draw things and then visit them in her delerious dreams. For example, a house that she draws with a crippled boy inside (who later regains the use of his legs). The part that relates to Lost is, the writer was... "Bernard Rose". Bernard and Rose? People who are crippled getting their ability to walk restored? Wishing for something and having it manifest itself? Interesting.

Wait, it's not De Groots, it's Dig Roots! In the special six-hour season four premiere (two three hour episodes on two consecutive nights), No Flashbacks! Juliet and... let's say Sun... discover all the... um, male virgins... are going blind, from a combination of sexual frustration and a vitamin deficiency that can be cured by massive doses of natural beta carotene eaten in the form of boiled root mash. The entire group of 815 survivors, including the thirty-some others we've never known by name - UNTIL TONIGHT - will dig for carrots, turnips, parsnips and other edible roots. Actually there are flashbacks, but they all occur ON THE ISLAND and after the plane crash: In fact, the entire episode is shown in reverse order so that each scene is a flashback showing what happened immediately before the one preceding it, so by the end of the six hours they have buried all the roots they finished eating in the opening scene. Also, this will be the first all pantomime episode, with no dialog at all - all the new characters introduced by name will be wearing name tags with their official Sawyer Nicknames [tm] printed in (parentheses). And the "Previously On..." teaser will be "Later On..." for this one episode only: and show scenes from upcoming episodes. ***** The show will then go on a nine week hiatus during which the individual hours of the six hour premiere will be shown weekly in random order, except for the all important Hour Five, which will never be rerun and will also be included on the DVD set in a severely truncated form. ***** When the show returns in January the first episode ends with the scenes teased in the season debut's "Later On..." opener. That scene: the discovery of The Dharma Resort and Casino. Although they discover a fully equipped hotel with private rooms, clean beds and private showers, none of the islanders move in, preferring to remain in their tents and huts on the beach for fear that "someone might show up". The next episode, titled "The Game-Changer", picks up from the previous episodes discovery of dozens of unopened packs of playing cards marked with... (wait for it)... the Dharma Initiative Emblem on the back! The games changed: Locke gives up backgammon and computer chess and Hurley turns his beloved ping-pong table into a poker table. ***** Also, global warming causes herds of Giant Squid to migrate north, eating all the fish and urchins and... Charlie and Aaron. The lack of fishing frees up Jin's time and allows him to spend more time studying English, resulting in a variety of highly comedic misnomers. ***** Oh, and Jack, Kate and Steve die, Sawyer really IS banished when Hugo mentions the idea to the group and they all decide it's a good idea and Locke is The Cobra. Vincent digs up Nikki and Paulo and carries their bones around, but they really are dead, not zombies. However his practice of uninterring the dead proves crucial when it turns out the secret map to getting off the island is concealed in Jack's ornate ass tattoo - although no one on the island knows it, only the viewers and four people from Jack's flashback that we've never seen before and won't see again. And the smoke monster IS a Genie; everyone he's killed has been because of someone wishing they were dead. And the VW micro-bus turns out to be really important... until it runs out of gas. Late in the season a five-episode story arc completely ignores the Losties, the Tailies, The Others, the Villagers, The Dharma-bums and the previously unseen Aborigines, and focus on 1.) The Antarctic Listening Station, attentively waiting for another Magnetic Anomaly to triangulate on, which never comes, 2.) Adam and Eve, 3.) Nigerian Drug Smugglers, 4.) The Pirates and 5.) an all flashback but only to events occurring on the Island episode explaining what Rose and Bernard have been doing cooped up in that lean-to all season (and it's not what you think, but it ain't pretty, folks) ***** The season four ender, "A Dream Within a Russian Nesting Doll, Wrapped In An Enigma and Covered With Tangy Cheese", reveals that a an emotionally disturbed Walt, wearing a fallse beard and trapped on a boat eternally looking for land, has been imagining the entire series while staring at an aquarium containing hand painted porcelain versions of various island icons (hatch, 4-toed foot, tattooed shark, Kate's toy airplane, the emergency key, blocks engraved with The Numbers, The Virgin Mary statue, ranch dressing, a gun, etc.). This, however, is a daydream of the psychotic, superstitious Hurley, still in the mental institution with Libby and his imaginary friends. This, however, turns out to be a dream in the mind of the alcoholic Jack Shepherd, despondent over his divorce and the death of his father and the STD he got after picking Ana Lucia up at the airport lounge and missing his flight while having angry bad-cop sex. But it's all just elements of a fan fiction written by Penny while her lover Desmond is away in a boating contest: the future-Desmond must travel back in time and imagine a world in which he never entered that contest and Penny never wrote that story. To be continued in Season Five...(ba-dunnn)... LOST. ***** [DVD bonus material on the Season Four set will include a "making of" doc of the unused and destroyed, never seen Jolene Blalock flashback from season two and the second and third Bai Ling episodes from season three, plus storyboards of unshot scenes of what was supposed to happen with Michael, Walt, Ana Lucia, Libby and Mr. Eko if the actors in those roles hadn't all left the series.] ***** Season Five will debut with an episode called "Counting Down From 100: Ten..." (After 24 episodes in season one, 23 in season two and 22 in season three, season four will be 21 episodes long. The eighteen episode fifth season continues to count down, with the numbers nine, eight, seven and so on incorporated into each episode title. The one-hundred-and-first episode, "Zero Hour", will be a behind the scenes episode in which ABC tells JJ Abrams to explain to Lindelhof and Cuse that sometimes even if a story has come to a natural conclusion it is necessary to pad out a series in order to produce the minimum one hundred episodes required for a really lucrative syndication deal. The entire series is revealed to be... (wait for it)... A WORK OF FICTION created by television writers mining internet chats and fan sites for ideas. Also, in an unresolved cliff-hanger, episode 108, the series finale, ends with Claire possessed by a demon named Bob, Ben Linus turns out to be Number One and when Locke is warned that IF he pushes a button it will destroy the world, he pushes the button... (ba-dunnn) ...LOST. ***** Obsessed fans hold out hopes for years for an oft-rumored theatrical reunion movie which never gets made, although several scripts including one by Kevin Smith are leaked to the Internet for fan feedback. Unfortunately they all pretty much suck and none of them actually resolve any of the series major dangling plot threads.

or at least that is what the writers say. If anyone that is dead comes back on the show it is because they are in a flashback.
We saw Eko's brothers corpse talking to him, but it said, "Why do you act like you know me. I am not your brother.", and then folks it killed his ass.
So where is everyone getting this idea that the island heals dead people?
Christian Shephard was dead. Jack identified the body in the morgue.
The vision he saw of his father was either the smoke monster causing a vision or the smoke monster inside his father body(which happened to be missing).

The Lost Experience didn't mention Widmore I don't think. It was more about The Hanso Foundation and their deveopment of the DHARMA project on the island to study and change the Valenzetti Equation (4,8,15,16,23,42). A Widmore, Arthur Widmore was mentioned in that crap novel Bad Twin. But through that we did learn that there is a connection between Widmore and Hanso, but what that is isn't clear. I too believe that the myterious Jacob will be someone we haven't met but this person will play a major role in Season 4 I'll bet. But Charles Widmore is involved in someway with the Island and I do not believe it was a mistake that Desmond crashed his boat there nor do I believe it was a chance encounter with Libby that gave him the boat. There are dozens of lingering mysteries but the backstories of Libby and Charles Widmore rank near the top of the "need to know more" list.

That would make sense if we learn that time on the island and time in the real world is different. But I've always felt that the Island is in the real world. There are birds and fish in the Ocean. The sun rises and sets everyday. The weather changes, etc..so I believe the island is a real place in our reality but the Elctromagnetic properties of the island may have hidden it somehow. There will most likely be a logical explanation.

1) 108 episodes in total to complete the series would be pretty cool ... 2) If Charlie isn't in season 4 (as rumours would have it) would Evangeline Lilly decide to quit soon after (somehow I doubt it) ... 3) May be time on the island does work normally, only Walt has been injected with a growth hormone for some reason and Michael brings him back to the island for treatment (I seriously don't think Michael would return to the island out of choice considering the reception he'd receive... it would also explain why the Others were happy to let Walt go considering his perceived importance, knowing he'd be back) ... 4) Jack suspects that Juliette is not genuine and lulling her into a false sense of security (keep your friends close and your enemies closer and all that) ... 5) Juliette actually wants to join the Losties and will double-cross the Others, not the survivors

I don't buy that Jack is oblivious to Juliet and what she is doing. He knows something. No way did he keep his head down and not ask questions. He either is working with them or he is playing it cool so as to fuck up the plan later on. There is a reason he gets the finale flashback!

All they said was that the actor's growth would be 'addressed'. That could simply mean that they address it by writing him out of the show, not by making it a plot feature.
As for 'time dilation', I thought this was a possibility until last week's ep. All the time they showed the 'real world' on monitors (including the Sox game) I thought it was misdirection... possibly it was old news they were presenting as current, that kind of thing. But the '3 years' thing with Juliet blows the theory away. She arrives in 2001. The Losties arrive in 2004. She remarks, just before they arrive, that "tomorrow I will have been here three years". There's no way there's a time dilation effect. Now it IS still possible that they island is in the future, and that they took Juliet into the future, and that the Losties plane got sucked into the future too. But then the island is in the future by a set amount, and time passes at the usual rate. Oh, and somehow Penny is able to detect them and travel there. So that theory is pretty bloody unlikely as well.

The sky was not purple when Desond brought down Flight 815 during the System Failure. Only when the failsafe was turned and the "Dam was blown" did the sky go purple. Although it is possible it happened before back during the Dharma days and that is the what Marvin Candle referred to as the "incident: that started the button pushing to begin with.

Totally off topic, but I rewatched Season 2 over the weekend and during "three Minutes" Ms. Klough threatens Walt that she'll put him back in "the room". I forgot about that and didn't think of it when Kate & Sawyer rescued Karl. So maybe Room 23 is not for brainwashing as I first thought but used as a psycological torture/punishment? Small detail but I found it cool that even during Season 2 the writers had already mapped out Room 23. Anyone who says these guys are making it up as they go along is crazy.

BUT, what if it happened at a point we haven't seen before the plane crashed on the island due to a completely different circumstance. Tom says, "ever since the sky turned purple" He may not be referring, to his own people, the latest time the sky turned purple. This would help to explain why a surgeon on island would be needed. Although, now I'm thinking, we saw footage of the news coverage of the crash of 815 sooo, they still had communications. Nevermind, too much red wine.

I read about her on lostpedia.com (someone posted the link above somewhere), and they point out a ton of discrepancies with her story. I still stand by the fact that she is crazy. Crazy people can't tell accurate stories.
They also mention what she was saying in French on the radio: The message left at the radio tower is not totally consistent with her story. The radio tower message suggests that another person (Brennan) was alive and had taken some keys. She also says that "it [or he] killed them all" and that "it [or he] was outside her location when she was recording her message."

Charlie hung....Himself?
by Cheif Brody
Apr 18th, 2007
07:35:19 PM
Is it possible we'll get a Charlie flashback that will show him increasingly immersed in his smack habit...and realizing Drive Shaft is falling apart...and possibly a chick or family member breaks his tiny Hobbit heart...and we see him attempting/contemplating suicide...only to get pulled back from the brink at the last second by Liam? I mean...he was headed back to LA after Liam put the final nail in the Drive Shaft coffin...he's crashed on Craphole Island...he allowed his best girl Claire to be abducted by Ethan, whom he swore to protect...perhaps when Jack & Kate found him swinging there...it was by his OWN doing? Perhaps he was suppose to DIE then, except J & K found him first...all well before Des's pre-cog powers kicked in. Who knows?...it's Lost, for crap sakes! As for Christian "returning" from the dead...well, it wouldn't be "returning" if he never died in the first place. Perhaps there's a reason his coffin was found empty...that said...I seriously doubt "he's" Jacob...but having a connection to Widmore/Hanso/Piak/ Dharma etc cannot be ruled out...he's got a direct connections with so many of the Losties...Coinky-dink? I think not. And as for the "pussified" Sawyer...I for one think it's all to set him up to get "hurt" down the road...Hurley's "be nice" experiment caused Sawyer to open up to his fellow castaways and abandon his loner ways...I think he will ultimately be betrayed for allowing himself to get in this new "vulnerable" position...and he'll be right back to his "fuck everyone" self. It's classic storytelling....make the meany "friendly"...then stomp on him for his troubles. It's the only way to "punish" that type of character. I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with the writer's "grooming" Sawyer to become the new leader of the Losties. As far as TPTB "makin it up as they go"...I had the biggest problem with them showing the picture Desmond looked at of himself and Penny at the beginning of Season 2...with a completely DIFFERENT actress...wearing a WHITE shirt...only to have the pic show up again after Sonya Walger was cast to play Penny...with her Photoshop'd in...wearing a BLACK shirt in later eppy's. C'mon now...if they KNEW the Des/Pen arc was gonna be so crucial to the Season 2 finale...(where we got our very first "OFF ISLAND/NON-FLASHBACK" moment)...why the hell would they not have the CORRECT actress posing with Desmond in the original picture? Des could have just has easily been staring at a letter signed 'Love Always, Penny' and gotten the same message across...he misses her. Instead, we get the old 'switch-a-roo' of the pics...which they later went back and FIXED for the Season 2 DVD release. Sure, Sonya Walger may not have been able to pose for the original pic...scheduling...etc...But I have a feeling that TPTB of Lost had NO IDEA at the beginning of Season 2 that it would end with Penelope receiving that cryptic phone call from the arctic Portuguese dudes saying they'd "found" the island. If they knew all THAT at the beginning of Season 2...why would they have bothered to give us this long lingering close up of the original Des/Pen photo with a different actress standing in? I'd have felt better if they just say..."yeah...the whole phone call thing from the artic tracking station...Um...yeah...we made that up about mid-season...after Sonya became available to play Penny...and the fans found her to be such a strong character...Our bad". It's possible TPTB always knew that the "challah" scene, as they called it, in the Season 2 finale was always gonna happen at some point...but I have a hard time believing that it was suppose to be Penny (Sonya) on the other side of that phone call...especially when getting around showing a picture of an "uncasted" part that ended up having such a huge impact on the finale would have been so easy. I'd also just like them to come out and say..."it's about 50/50...50% is pre-planned...and 50% is made up during the season, partly based on fan reaction to the events as they unfold". I'm sure they have an overall story arc for Lost...a beginning, a middle, and an end...but, little mistakes like that photo gaffe, always make me feel a little weary. But, as TPTB have said, there's no grand "ending" to the show that is going to please everyone...I say...just enjoy the great TV show they put on the screen every week...and keep your nervous fingers crossed TPTB are not gonna let us down.

I found these on lostspoilersblogspot or something They actually address some things we discussed here. Here they are:

Juliet is up to no good. - There's going to be a Goodwin story in the future, although it's hard to determine if they are joking - Something "fairly momentous" is going to happen in Catch-22 - D.O.C will take us back to the death-of-pregnant-women storyline - The question arose of the now famous "did we miss something in the pilot" question. They called it a false rumour and that no hidden clue from the pilot has been un-addressed. The last remaining one is: "Guys, where are we?" - We will see Dharma before the purge and we might see how they repelled the smoke monster with the sonic fence. - Mentioned Smokie was "Taking Pictures Of Juliet" and "Similar To Reading Eko" - M.C. Gainey and Carlton Have Worked Together Before - Rachel may not have had the cancer come back... Ben's folder may have been a lie, MAY. - Smoke monsters cant jump - It can go vertical but they raise this question... "Can it detach from the ground?" - Lost Video Game - XBOX360 PS3 and PC and Damon and Carlton are Working with Ubisoft to make it.

I knew Desmond wouldn't let Charlie die.

I went back and checked out Desmond's flashbacks at the beginning of the show frame by frame.. though, Desmond didn't pick up on it.. Charlie was right there holding the parachute when they cut the lady down.. The only question I have about Desmond's flashbacks, though.. Penny appears.. I'm not sure if it's a shot of Penny talking to Desmond when they first meet.. or if Penny is going to eventually BE on the island.. or if showing Penny basically means that she's searching for him.. Penny being in Desmond's "vision" is the only part that was part of the flashback, though.. Overall, a friggin' great episode, brotha! Desmond's got stones twice da size of Jack's, brotha!! Speaking of Jack, anyone catch Matthew Fox's bit role in that crappy Smokin' Aces flick??

I can't tell why Desmond wanted to let Charlie die. He said that if he changed anything, it would change the end result. Well, from what I saw, his vision originally ended in finding what he thought was Penny hanging dead from a tree, so why would he want that not to change? And come to think of it, didn't the vision show Charlie, Hurley and Jin holding the parachute to catch the falling person? How did Desmond figure that would happen if Charlie died before they found her? I think they made a big mistake throwing time travel/visions of the future into a show with so many different inexplicable things happening. I hope I'm wrong, though. And is Desmond's monk evil or what? Why the picture of him with that mean old lady from the jewelry store?

As for the picture of Pen, they had obviously not cast her yet. You can't cast someone that far in advance and expect them to be able to be free to trek to Hawaii when they finally need her, half a year later. As for Charlie, I've thought that Jack saving him after Ethan "killed" him might have been part of his predestined death, but I'm convinced whatever is happening to him has to do with his proximity to the Hatch when it imploded/exploded and how odd he was acting when he rejoined Claire on the beach right after...
Jacob's Ladder

JACOB + MORIAH = Stairway to Heaven? "there is a story of Jacob’s dream of a ladder reaching heaven in the Book of Genesis,... During a journey, Jacob realizes that he has traveled too far and has forgotten to pray at the site where his father and grandfather had prayed. This site of prayer is also where Abraham’s loyalty was tested (known as the Akeidah trial) as God requests Abraham kill his only son, Isaac. At the last moment, Abraham is stopped by God from killing Isaac, and a ram caught in the thicket is killed in Isaac’s place. The site of the Akeidah is the same site where the First and Second Temples were built on Mount Moriah. Before Jacob has a chance to return, to pray at this site, God brings Mount Moriah to Jacob. That night Jacob has a dream of a ladder of angels where he meets God. In Genesis 28:13, we read “And behold God was standing over him.” When Jacob awakens next morning, he exclaims in Genesis 28:17, “And this is none other than the abode of God and this is the Gate of Heavens.” It is the gate through which prayers ascend to heaven and the Divine meets earth." This site has also been claimed to be the "navel of the world". At the summit of Mount Moriah, traditionally, is the "Foundation Stone," the symbolic fundament of the world's creation." Has Mount Moriah come to Jacob in the Pacific Ocean? Are prayers/wishes granted on the Island because it is the portal to Divine Power?

I think Herc's onto something. I think Ben forced Kate to sleep with Sawyer in order to manipulate Jack. Kate's reaction tonight seemed a little odd and I think that's part of a big upcoming reveal. I don't think Kate put an implant in Jack or anything, but I do think she was told to do Sawyer. Her crying was her realizing she's lost Jack because of what she did and wouldn't it be more tragic if she did it to save Jack? I also think Jack knows Juliet's up to some shit.

Desmond worries about all this bad crap happening.. when in fact, I think he sees the bad stuff so he can change it because it MUST BE CHANGED by whoever is willing it.. My guess is that Charlie bites it at the end of the season.. but Desmond won't see it coming.. or he will and just can't stop it.. If Desmond can save Charlie, he will.. he's proven that tonight.. because he's too good of a guy.. Now Locke would probably kill Peggy Bundy if he got to dance with Smokey again..

Good episode. Not as great as some of the recent great episodes, but good. The secret origin of why Desmond calls everyone "brother" turns out to be that he used to be a monk? Okay, weird unexpected answer to a question nobody asked. *** My biggest scare was when Desmond saved Charlie from the arrow booby trap and I was afraid Charlie fell on the guitar strapped to his back and broke the neck. You know there's no way he would have forgiven Des for that. *** The fact that Penny would pick up an ex-monk at a monastery on the day he's kicked out is odd. So is her weird smile. She should play the Joker. *** Remember when in season one they wrote in a minor 815 survivor character specificaly in response to the fact that no one on the show wore glasses. Then, once Sawyer started needing reading glasses, they sort of wrote him out and forgot about him. In terms of overall series importance, that guy was less than Scott (Steve's friend, killed by Ethan) but slightly more than Joanna (the drowned swimmer). *** I know the island isn;t actually "a thousand miles off course" (the plane was, but an hour before it crashed). Still, how much fuel does a helicoptor carry to wind up somewhere in the middle of the Pacific? (But then we're talking about a show with a pirate ship in a tree, so why pick nits?)

Well proportioned post Nappy Park; Humor, wordplay, insight. This eprisode worked because it seemed as focused as the best. Everything gelled. Desmond's vastly contridictory nature is what is so wonderful when considering his abilities. He understands the predestiny vs. will debate better than anyone. Thats why future Locke, Desi, and Jack interplay is gonna be gold. Jack and Locke introduced the philosophically infused bout and Desmond is an unlikely tell-all testament. Read the Tempest fools. There in will you get the Desmond-like puzzle pieces to put together the future of the Lost series. Jack's dad, for serious, Prospero stylin'.

Possible island location reveal in the Flash reference?
by SpyGuy
Apr 19th, 2007
07:47:17 AM
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but Hurley and Charlie's "Flash vs. Superman" debate (which I loved) brought up the use of the Flash's vibration powers. As hardcore comic geeks know, Barry Allen used a device called a Cosmic Treadmill to travel to Earth-2, a parallel Earth, by vibrating into the alternate reality.

So, this may be completely nothing or a total red herring, but what if the Lostaways' island exists on a parallel Earth, which is why no one on "our" Earth has seemingly gone looking for them? This theory could explain why Juliet's trip to the island was so bumpy and difficult as well.

I tend to agree with your future earth theory, bt I think it's more. In this future earth I think they are able to see past infinite possibilities. Juliet's sister has cancer or doesn't. She does and recovers or does not. Therefore, nothing Ben says is a lie. Every possiblity is covered. So when we see juliet looking at today's paper and the camera pans up and sees her sister, that really happened on that day, just maybe not in the reality Juliet came from. That would also explain why she cannot go back. Because it's possible the reality she was picked from her sister did not make it. In other realities Juliet would still be there, and we all know you cannot exist in a reality where you are already present.

Because then JJ would be ripping himself off again (After Locke's Daddy episode which was just like the big Alias season 1 "Mom?" reveal). Still a good ep, but you can't deny that the reveal was very similar.

I love Lost again. They got their shit together.

And I think instead of 22 or 24 episodes, this show would be better with a reduced episode, non stop season. Doing so would have eliminated the season 2 frustration of waiting for new episodes and having them be ridiculously over hyped by online news reporters only for them to be "just good".

I think last night was another solid outing. I think the only weak link this season was Jack's tattoo episode. Other than that it's back to Season 1 good.

But I'm telling you, while the "Evil Francie" reveal was great on Alias, and the big fight at the end of the season was the shit, I don't want to see it repeated on "Lost".

But I do have a feeling that Jack will "Die" in the final battle with Locke at the end of the season, and the real Jack is still eating grilled cheese sandwhiches somewhere locked up in a basement.

Flash was in the Comic that Walt was reading w/the polar bear in it from season 1. Even w/o the treadmill, if Flash accellerates to an ultra fast velocity, doesn't he enter "speed force" or "speed time" or something crazy like that. They had a shout out to it in JLU when he stopped Brainiac and disappeared. "Force time" maybe??? Don't remember what it's called. But it's just another red herring. Starting way back in season one, when Hurly and Sayed were listening to the radio, Sayed asked where the music was coming from and Hurly asked "or when?". Rumple, I don't like your theory. I'm not saying any theories are wrong anymore, just if I like them or not. Oh, and what happened to the LONELY COMIC BOOK KID THAT TURNED INTO THE SMOKE MONSTER theory?

I loved the bit where they were walking along the beach whistling.

The visual clue on the desk with the Fate lady and the monk.

Sawyer: "You two arguing over who's your favourite Other?".

Jin's ghost story.

The more convincing (though surprising) origin of Desmond's "brother", which nobody from Glasgow ever says (ever), so it's not localised dialect.

Another thing I wonder about is how Des got chucked out of the army and (unless I'm mistaken) put in jail.

...than vibrating to Earth-2 with the help of the Cosmic Treadmill. You're right that when the Flash accelerates to an uber-fast velocity, he breaks through some sort of dimensional plane and enters the Speed Force, which has been compared to a Heaven/Nirvana-like state of existence that you're not supposed to come back from.

But when Barry Allen used the Cosmic Treadmill, it helped him attune his body to a specific vibrational frequency that allowed him to travel in time or across parallel Earths. As soon as Barry (and Wally as Kid Flash) relaxed the internal vibrations, they returned home to their normal time or Earth. So yeah, I think the Lostaways' island may be on a different vibrational frequency than "our" Earth. And if so, then all the electromagnetism and wormhole/A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME references probably tie in somehow.

If she does show up at the end it's only going to add to the emotion of the reunion. The two actors have great chemistry. I also loved seeing Kate in her panties. Man she is fraking hot. Mostly I just loved the fact that Desmond was pretty much going to let Charlie take that arrow to the throat for his own personal reasons but then just couldn't do it and it changed history just enough that it wasn't Penny. Even when they found that backpack it was still Penny and then Charlie living altered the future just enough that it ended up just being someone Penny sent for her most likely. Brilliantly done.

First off, there's no logical way that Charlie surviving would make that woman Penny. Themeatically it would make sense, but not logically. Perhaps you could argue against that via "course correction", but the second reason is more direct: the book in the backpack was in Portugese, like they speak in Brazil. Penny's Antarctic (?) guys from the Season 2 finale spoke in Brazilian Portugese too. And when they pulled the helmet off, the girl looked pretty Brazilian to me. So unless Penny speaks Portugese, that book shows that it was always a Brazilian chick in the parachute, not Penny.

Maybe nothing immediately apparent has changed and Des was mistaken to assume that by allowing Charlie to die, that it would be Penny. The long term effect would be tha Des, realising how wrong he was to consider letting Charlie die, woudld continue doing all he could to change every vision he has (which he has done so far) and Charlie's prolongued existence is bound to have relevance at some point.

We don't know yet what may have been changed by Desmond's decision to save Charlie. We have no idea what was changed when Desmond decided to save Charlie the first three times, either. I couldn't help but think it was somewhat foolish on Desmond's part to assume it would be Penny arriving herself. I mean, he didn't see Penny in the flightsuit in his "flashback" he just saw SOMEONE and assumed it was her. Let's be honest, we have no reason to believe that Penny knew how to fly a helicopter in the first place. And besides, when you're the daughter of a multi-billionaire you don't need to operate your own research station or fly your own helicopters. You employ Portuguese people to do it for you.

...DCComics.com and Wikipedia are probably your best friends for the basic info. If you want to check out the actual stories, trade paperback and hardcover collections are the way to go.

To get up to speed on the recent big events, I'd start with IDENTITY CRISIS, then the PRELUDE TO INFINITE CRISIS trade paperback, then the four INFINITE CRISIS lead-in mini-series THE OMAC PROJECT, VILLAINS UNITED, DAY OF JUDGMENT & THE RANN/THANAGAR WAR, and then the INFINITE CRISIS hardcover (the trade paperback's not out yet), and the four upcoming 52 trade paperback volumes (the first is out at the end of May).

COUNTDOWN starts in a few weeks, which is supposed to "count down" (clever, hunh?) every week for the next year to the next mega-event, reportedly the last in the IDENTITY/INFINITE CRISIS revamping of the DCU.

PHEW! Where's my frakking royalty check from Dan DiDio for all that?

...wasn't it like miles of the coast when it went down? And wasn't the pilot in the tree miles inland--and dressed like a fighter pilot? How'd that happen? As for Charlie, I also think that the ramifications of Desmond saving him are going to come to light in the upcoming Charlie episode. I have a feeling he's going to do something disastorous and cause the lives of some of the 815ers. That also might tie in with the rumor of multiple deaths in the last several episodes.

I heard an interview with the creators where they said they plan on bringing Michael and Walt back but they had to get them of the island for practical reasons: the survivors have only been on the island for months and they wouldn't be able to explain the growth of the actor who played Walt. They also said that when he returns, his unexplained aging will play into the story. Interesting.

She was dressed like a fighter pilot in that she was wearing a flight suit, yes. If she was sent by the Widmore's then they can probably afford a paramilitary force or maybe if you're flying into the middle of Pacific Ocean that's what you wear instead of shorts and a hawaiian shirt. As for her being inland, she might have ejected and been blown inland or she parachuted in before a separate pilot crashed in the ocean. hard to say.

Didn't they interview the actor who plays Charlie and they say he was doing some underwater scenes involving him and the cable that Sayid found in season 1? Also Eonline's Kristen reported that the actor who plays Michael is pulling a Lena Olin and wants more money to return to Lost. He was supposed to make his re-appearance in the season finale, but they are still working on a deal. He needs to stop acting like he has work lined up and get back on the island.

I really wasn't implying that she was actually in a fighter jet only that she didn't seem dressed as a helicopter pilot. If she was in a helicopter she obviously didn't eject but I could possibly buy that she blew inland. I kinda hope they address that. I'm not sure who said it above but I like the snowglobe idea--a force field covering the island. That would explain entrance by submarine. It would also imply that Michael and Walt have never actually left the island(s) being as they were in a boat (used only to get between islands). This reminds me. One thing that has always bugged me on the show--if they haven't ever walked the perimeter of the island, how do they know they're on an island?

by Howard the Duck
Apr 19th, 2007
11:37:15 AM
ONE: Penny knows all about Dharma Island from Desmond's professor friend who Des pretty much told everything to, due to his apparent "Quantum Leap"-ing. As soon as Desmond goes missing, Penny and the Prof get together and compare notes. Penny uses her/her father's sizeable fortune to search for the island. That's why there's two Portuguese listening for electromagnetic and/or EMP anomalies. I betcha that Penny shows up on the island on the last episode of this season. TWO: I now believe that the Island is out of sync with space-time. Not in the future, at least, not by years, but maybe by days. It would possibly explain all of the Flash references. Speaking of Flash, the Speed Force(located on the other side of light) calls to all Speedsters in the DCU to pretty much run so fast as to become a permanent part of it, and is the source of the DCU's Speedster's powers. Anyway, THREE: Ben knows the safest, most proven way to travel to and from the Island is by way of the coordinates he gave Michael and Walt. Which, I'd wager, are the same ones used by the sub. FOUR: Penny had copies made of the picture of her and Des by going back to the photographer and buying the negatives(or the whole camera) from him. Simple, really. And, I think that anyone who actually goes looking for Des and the Island(as per Penny's instuctions) is given a copy of the picture. FIVE: The lady in the picture on the abbot's desk(the pawn shop lady in the Desmond flashback episode) is also out of sync with the rest of normal space-time, but she has greater insight into the complexities of it. Don't know her connection to the abbott. SIX: Charlie's wrong about the Flash/Superman race. Flash would win. Hurley's right, and Charlie's wrong.

Kate's mom was married to the military guy after she split from Kate's real father Wayne. But then her mom got back together with Wayne later on again. Kate grew up thinking that the military guy was her real father but then learned later on it wasn't. So she learned that the guy with her mother who was making sexual advances towards herself and beating her mother was actually her real father. So she blew up the house with him in it to kill him and so her mom could collect the insurance on it. Only her mother was pissed and turned her in. We actually did meet her stepfather the miltary guy twice. Once when she visited him at the recruitment place and we also saw him in Iraq in one of Sayid's flashbacks.

And didn't Ben allude to the submarine just giving people on the island the comfort of THINKING they could leave any time?

OK, when we were first introduced to Kate's 2 dads we were led to believe that the soldier was his real dad and that she'd killed her stepdad (the abusive alcoholic): this is also what Kate believed until after she killed the guy. In the same episode, her flashback showed her soldier dad revealing to Kate that the dick she killed was her real dad, and that the soldier (having been seperarted from her mum) was not her dad in any way. To summarise, the guy she killed was indeed her real dad.

Let's not kid ourselves. The production values on "Lost" alone blow "Heroes" out of the water. "Heroes" is entertaining, and the plot seems to be coming together nicely, but check back with that show in season 3 to see if there will be a backlash. No matter what we all say about "Lost". You can never say the acting sucks. "Heroes" on the other hand has a lot of wooden performances. And the score for "Lost" is also great.

Desmond Waking Up
by _Maltheus_
Apr 19th, 2007

I had assumed right when he said we woke up somewhere, without knowing how he got there, that he must have had a time travel moment. Is it true, as someone had mentioned, that there was a picture of that monk with the jewelery store lady? It would make sense I guess. But then why would he be so surprised that Desmond made it through the month of silence?

Once Desmond saw the helicopter, he shouldn't have needed Charlie at all at that point. What difference could his death had made once "she" is on the island?

Saving the Penny appearance for the last scene of the season would be horrible. Lost producers, do you remember how pissed everyone was that you spent most of the first season trying to get into a hatch, only to show it blown open and nothing more at the end? That was because it's not a reveal that it gets blown open, everyone knows that was gonna happen. I still believe strongly that they should have shown Desmond getting his gun and setting up the mirror system before finishing that season up, as that would have introduced a new element for us to salivate over all summer, and then people wouldn't have complained about that finale. They'd be too busy speculating about this new Desmond guy. The same is true here of Penny. Just showing her and ending WILL have a lot of pissed people here complaining about how stupid the show is and you don't need to be pissing off anyone else. We already know she's gonna show up, you better be prepared to give us something else in that moment.

I'll admit it freely...

Kate is like that pretty gal I would spend hours talking to in a bar only to have someone ask me what her name is and the best I can recall is "I think she said she was a 34C."

Seriously, I love 'Lost'. I made a really out-of-character choice to rid myself of passive entertainment and 'get out more'. I can afford cable and chose to cut it off (this is not an 'I hate TV' thing, btw). Yet, I still crack out the old rabbit ears for 'Lost' (and 'Lost' only). ANYHOO, I love 'Lost', but the Kate episodes go in one ear and out the other (with the occasional detour for masturbation, depending).

Kate killed her real father. The military guy was just the man she grew up with. She thought he was her real father until some time before she killed him.

Yes, that's right- KATE KNEW WAYNE WAS HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER WHEN SHE BLEW HIM UP. She says as much when speaking to Major dad. She says that she hated that he was a part of her, or something to that effect, and she knew damn well that he was her real father. Major dad says that he didn't tell her the truth because he was hoping she'd do something like kill Wayne, as well (I believe). For the love of christ guys, it's really not THAT hard to pay attention is it?

Maltheus: She could have died landing instead of surviving unless charlie went. and for Desmond knew he still needed Charlie for that. And I diagree about the Penny coming at the end would be bad. That hasn't been a storyline built up over 3/4 of the season like the hatch. It's just been a minor subplot to the overall Other storyline. Penny comign would just be a minor cliffhanger in my opinion.

Someone said earlier that they saw a picture, in this episode, of the monk with the old lady. I wasn't too surprised by that, since I had the sense they were connected anyway. The monk was standing over Desmond after one of his blackouts and I presume that blackout was time travel related. The monk also seems to have a clue about Desmond's destiny and maybe even set him up with Penny (by firing him at just the right moment). I think that regardless of how long between his appearance in Desmond's life and the old lady's, that they both work together as some sort of guides for Desmond. And if they are some sort of time travelers as well, then it doesn't matter how much apparent time passed between the two events. In fact, I wouldn't be too surprised if they are the same person/entity.

If Sun got injected with the stuff that Juliet put into her sister, doesn't the shot itself make her pregnant? Or is that the shot makes someone who can't have babies get pregnant, meaning Jin is the father and the shot just makes her conceive? What it does answer, I think, is that Sun's baby isn't the bald Asian dude's. But who knows...And 5 deaths in May? This show can't stand to lose 5 people in May. Seriously. All I know is Ben better not die. He's the best thing on the show.

They may have not built it up for all season explicitly, but that's because they don't typically cover non-island events, unless they are in flashback. Penny showing up was set in motion with the season 2 finale. To repeat that moment (well, now she's here) in the season 3 finale would almost seem like a parody of the show at this point. You may be cool with it, but I guarantee it'll piss most of the viewers off to have her finally show up, after expecting her all season, only to cut to commercial for the rest of the summer. It's not a big moment in and of itself and it shouldn't be treated as such. Just like opening the hatch wasn't a big moment, finding out what was in the hatch was the big moment. And to the lovers, when we found out what was in the hatch, it didn't ruin the show, did it? It took it to a new level. The same will be true of most of the other reveals the haters have been asking for. There's always more to chew on. Ending on a non-event, will only repeat the conditions prior to the mid-season break where people have a lot of time to bitch about what we didn't get. It would be a monumental mistake!
Sun's pregnancy

Sun may very well have been impregnated by the others; however, in the episode where it's revealed that she's pregnant, she finds out via a pregnancy test that she took with her. Kate asks what type of person takes a pregnancy test with her on a place, and Sun is awkwardly silent. Clearly, this implies that Sun suspected that she was pregnant before taking the flight. Now, she could have been wrong, and it could have been the others, but it seems more likely that she was already pregnant.

I here you, but if anyone has been expecting Penny to show up all season they don't have a clue how this show works. And judging by the ratings drop the novices have bailed. This entire season has taken place over what, two weeks maybe? To me that's about the time it would probably take for Penny to assemble a team and find the Island with the resources she has. This has been pretty much signified by Naomi arriving. So I think anyone who watches this show and knows how it works shouldn't be shocked or disappointed if the season cliffhanger is her arriving. That would set up next season nicely and give a nice little cliffhanger for people to look forward to.

It was the same Sayid flashback ep.

As for penny coming. It's not anti-climactic, it's just expected, so it lacks that certain "Oh SHIT!" moment that Lost episodes so often end with (x10 for the season finales).

Still, supposedly the twist revolves around jack, so I wouldn't go assuming it's gonna be penny just yet. It's too obvious to be as secret as these guys are treating it. They say it's bigger than any of the other twists... We'll see.

Also, a side note: GOB Adama, I've made this same mistake myself- The immaculate conception I believe refers to the fact that Mary was born without sin, not that Jesus was to a virgin woman.

The lost writers made the same mistake, or at the very least, Locke's crazy mother did.

BilboFatwa, I wasn't saying her arrival was unimportant, I'm just saying that we know it's coming, so I don't want that to be the final scene. It can wait till the final episode, I'm just saying it would be very cheesy if it's the final scene cause it's redundant. I want the final scene to be unexpected. Not something that's be telegraphed since the last season finale.

PwnedByStallone, I agree that it would take her time to mount an expedition. I find myself explaining that all the time to people who are asking "what ever happened to that story line." It should take some time. I just want them to spend a little time with her character before they play that episode close sound. Add something to the plot and not just show the scene that we're all expecting, "oh who's that walking down the beach, it's Penny," roll credits.

Season 3 quality aside (which I know has driven people away in itself), moving the show to a later slot will guarantee a smaller audience. I'm sure most people still don't have a DVR and I know a number of die-hard fans who have been missing episodes left an right cause they're falling asleep. And I'm in mountain time, where it comes on at 9, I can only imagine what it's like for the coasters who have to catch it at 10.

CorpseRide, you mentioned bittorrent, is the finale out on the net already? And all the ones leading up to it? I find that hard to believe and I kind of hope it isn't true. I'm not sure I can resist the temptation.

Some points (Penny and Desmond)
by Leopold Scotch

I think Maltheus's concerns are justified. There have been cliffhangers before which have been to the same effect: Sun pointing out to the boat during Libby and Ana Lucia's funeral, for example (even though this wasn't end of season), and if it happened at the last minute of the season, it would be crap (for some reason, people talking about Penny's arrival makes me think about the image of Des's boat half a mile offshore, and the effects of that, or something similar, would be a shit thing to go out on). If it happened half-way through the last episode, then I'm sure nobody would complain.

Regarding why Des insisted on bringing Charlie, it seems pretty clear to me that Des is totally anxious about the effects of changing any little bit of the vision (sort of butterfly effect stuff), and even if Charlie surviving the trap wouldn't be an obvious factor in changing the helicopter/parachute outcome, he just had to make sure that everything was exactly as he had seen it. In the end, he decided to risk such a butterfly effect, and it was a justified gamble.

Incidentally, this is the first time Charlie's death wouldn't have been anything to do with Claire, so I suppose those theories were wrong.

Finally, when I first heard the Scottish accents, I cringed a little, but I think they were actually geniuine, localised accents. Ruth is clearly a more rural accent (from the north, or from the borders) while the monk just did what most Scottish actors have to do, and that's make his accent universally understandable among English speakers (by dropping some more locally specific properties of the dialect). For another example, see Billy Boyd as Pippin, and Robbie Coltrane's Hagrid, who - despite clrealy having a broad Scottish accent in the HP books (as doesn Coltrane himself, obviously) - he adopts a northern English accent). Refreshingly, Des doesn't do this so much, so he's less concerned about whether or not everyone understands him ("Ye don't wannae know what happened to me... Ye don't wannae know... Awright, there pal?" etc).

I don't think that's an island pic: I think it's from Des's last episode, the scene where he breaks up with Penny. The background seems greenish, but it's too blurred to figure out: still, I think you can just make out the Des's London scarf at the edge of the picture, plus, obviously she's crying.

Not a huge deal to me, since the show has picked up some, but at the time it sounded like someone knew something. I suppose he's hanging with Locke somewhere. Unless Locke's father is Jacob. But the abbey is down in Devon. I got the impression that the abbey in Lost was further north, though it doesn't quite say that.

As for Ruth, I know people who actually speak like that and, (cringeworthy though it may be, even for most Scots), I maintain that she's just a rural burd. Maybe the acting doesn't help either.

On a separate note: Desmond's guides... one seems to be telling him he is meant for greater things, the monk and the other, the old lady, seems to be telling him there is nothing he can do. The mixed messages are confusing. I agree Desmond is a good person, but he accidentally killed that man from the hatch. So he isn't perfect.

No way was she Scottish, 'rural' or otherwise. That was one of the worst accents I've seen on TV - she chased it all around western Europe, the wife thought she was supposed to be Irish. And I am aware Buckie is made in Devon, it was more of an observation about this mysterious 'quality' vineyard in Britain.
See that's the thing about Lost that annoys me. At the time I go - great episode. Then afterwards I think, hang on, where was this monastery producing expensive wine? A whisky I could believe maybe.
And how old is Desmond? Presumably this was before the army, or are we supposed to think that the events of the previous flashback sent him to a monastery rather than the army? But it couldn't be cos he didn't go back to before he knew Penny. So what was that all about? Come on Penny - first the Church, then the army? This guy likes the company of men, you're wasting your time and daddy's money trying to find him. And speaking of which, whoever mentioned Tom and Ben being lovers is bang on the money. I mean come on - the whole "You're not my type" comment, the way Tom was freaking out when Jack was threatening Ben, the little looks they exchange - it's all there.
So basically what I'm saying is Jacob is Vincent

...would make an anticlimactic finale: like Locke, the viewers are no longer interested in rescue, and that's primarily what Penny signifies. We're interested in the Island and its mysteries. Most of the characters on the show would leave in a heartbeat and never give a second thought to the mysteries - and that's certainly not untrue to them.

Nice to see acknowledgment that they're still around. And to some extent it makes sense that they wouldn't be in on the action as much, as all they want to do is live out the rest of their lives on the island in peace. On the other hand, you'd think that would give them even more of an active interest in learning about their new neighbors/environment.

So, I went to that lostpedia/spoiler site you posted way up in this TB. And I was reading the spoilers for the rest of season 3. My question is, where do those people get their spoilers? Have they already seen the eps, or do they get the "spoilers" via spies and such? Like "Watch with Kristin" or whatever it's called. Has that person actually seen the ep, or is it coming from her "sources" and what he/she can piece together..

Those sources are a mixture of: TV columnists who have relatively direct access to the show's producers & PR people, spoiler blogs, local Hawaiian newspapers, press releases, reports from extras, leaked photos, etc etc. Sometimes people like Kristin have seen an ep, but usually they've just phone up the show's PR folks and wheedled some facts out of them.
Sometimes it's just a matter of looking at the call sheet for the episode. For example, this last ep had a listing for a "parachutist" character, then that was changed in a later call sheet to "Naomi". Once you have enough info, you can usually connect the dots and work out what's going on with an ep.

Penny arrives near teh end of the finale with a couple of planes. She loads up a bunch of the survivors and Others, but stops the main characters from leaving because they've still got "something left to do". And then she leaves without giving more explanation. So season four would be The Others and the 815ers working together to find out why they were left behind, and what they have to do to leave (if they all do, that is). I doubt it'll happen, but it'd be cool IMO. Save on extras casting as well.

Yeah, I know about the common misuse of "Immaculate Conception" (I appreciate the polite correction, none the less) which I so willingly perpetrated (bad thing for an educator to do, I admit). Not being an overly creative sort, I could think of no better why to invoke the notion of the western world's most famous miracle birth.

Point still stands... If Juliette is getting a gal knocked up w/o a father of any sort (which she is not) it would be an AMAZING leap of the show's sci-fi elements. I mean, what would that be? Causing a woman to conceive and incubate her own clone? But that's not what's happening. OR IS IT??? Dun dun DUN!!! Why am I even wasting time with this? Oh, that's right. They could easily keep him out of the story. If Michael returns (not really sure why HE would want to either) the conversation:

Jack: "Hey Michael, how's Walt doing?"

Michael: "Great. He is home safe. I didn't want to come back to this place and I sure as hell wasn't going to bring him back after what those people did to him"

And then they'll never talk about him again and the mystic quality of Walt will be gone too.

Just saw this on a reputable web site so I'd say it's canonical: Sometime late in season 3, Juliette will approach Aaron with a strange looking medical instrument. She won't be looking to inject him with an implant, but rather take his lostichlorian count. After doing this, she will radio Ben Linus and tell him "His Lostichlorian count is off the charts, over 20,000...even more than Master Jacob. He is the chosen one." Then, over the next few seasons Aaron will gain in intelligence quickly. He will construct his own canteen and learn the ways of the Island Force from Locke. Locke will give him a super canteen that never goes dry and tell him, "Your father wanted me to give you this canteen." Flash forward to the end of season 7 and at the ripe age of 3 Aaron will build an airplane from coconuts and plant material. The last line of season 7 will be Aaron screaming with excitement: "It's working! It's WORKING!!!"

So he said not to tell Bernard that he had stolen it.

This could be a huge plot point, what if "Jacob" turned out to be Phil Collins!?!?

Then we would finally know what Phil meant by "I can feel it comin' in the air tonight, oh lord." He was referring to the plane crash!

Walt's age
by lordgrimplemort
Apr 20th, 2007
03:43:33 PM
I don't see why Walt's growth would be such a huge deal. If he comes back, I hope they just ignore it and trust people to realize that the ACTOR has grown in real life rather than create some convoluted explanation for it and change the plot. It works for the Harry Potter kids- they don't come back each year and say "hey we've only been gone for a summer--why do you look 2 1/2 years older?"

The age that Malcolm David Kelly is at is unfortunate, because he's not just going to be taller, he will literally go from being a little boy to being a Young Man, which is a bit much to hang your suspension of belief on. I too have faith that the creators have a solution, and I really hope they don't just assume we won't notice how different he looks.

I was just bringing some "what if" and speculating. Hardly earth shattering or "hate" material. The reason it matters (or not) is that the show will be 3.5 years older when/if Walt comes back, yet only months of time have passed on the island. Kids grow fast in real life

It's easier to buy into the Harry Potter actors aging because actual years have passed since they were first years. If they quit filming the first Harry Potter at Christmas break in the film, then resumed 3 years later, it would be hard to take seeing all the actors 3 years older, yet their characters are supposed to be the same age.

That's why i'm glad they're keeping them. They've never been THAT much older than they're supposed to be. For the final film they'll be 20 year olds playing 17 year olds, and that's pretty close considering that American TV and movies often have late twenty-somethings playing high school kids...

Catch-22
by Boffin
Apr 21st, 2007
04:41:38 PM
Did Des saving Charlie actually changed the present? Switching out Penny for Naomi. I am inclined to agree with those that say it was always Naomi. Partly because of the copy of Ardil-22 found in the pack, but also the reference itself. In the novel, Heller's Catch-22 didn't actually exist. That is where all it's power was derived from. You can't dispute nothing. So, in a way, it doesn't matter what "bad visions" Des has. Whatever actions he takes based upon them will lead to the predetirmined outcome. That's the Catch-22. (Think of his time traveling in "FBYE") He cannot change what is meant to pass. If he hadn't been out with the guys looking for Penny, Naomi would certainly have perished in that tree. The hopes of the Losties rescue vanishing with her. That group of people had to be right where they were to hear the copter crash and see the beacon in order to save her. Saving her can potentially save them. So, Des' vision is leading him to Pen... just in a roundabout fashion. Or, you know, I am totally wrong. Also, I believe Cuse and MC Gainey worked together on the Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
Just to clarify about the Flash/Superman debate
by GimpInMyPants
Apr 21st, 2007
08:42:53 PM
The story about the Flash and Superman racing is taken from an actual comic book story where both superheroes race for charity. Hurley was familar with this story and that's why says they run for charity. An episode for Superman Animated Series on WB also featured this race. The Flash wins because that's his most notable power. Superman may not be the fastest but he still has a shitload of powers. It wouldn't make sense to make the Flash's only power, running really fast, not be the best in the DCU or else why have the Flash around in the first place.

Anyway back to lost, i was watching it again just now and i noted that the monk had a picture on his desk.
