we've had to a consistently good super hero trilogy, i still think they shouldve taken 3 yrs with Spidey 2 tho, drags in the middle for me, no spidey.im gonna go see this first midnight showing, this is the spidey movie ive been waiting on, one with Spiderman all the way thru it. 'Spiderman no more', that plot line was a cop out in 2 as they could only do so many cgi scenes in advance, no more spiderman no more, spidey all the way!Thru!

It'll probably be a decent enough movie, but also definitive proof that the perfect comic book adaptations some people have been holding out for will never happen. I've had a few issues with the Spideys so far, namely -casting from the very beginning, over-reliance on CG (can someone smarter than I tell me whether it would have been possible to incorporate more practical effects without killing stuntmen?), pushing the 'with great power' angle too far, the entire second movie going over the same ground as the first...but let's face it, until a talkbacker who's willing to take advice direct from the fans gets to helm one of these suckers, we'll have to take the good with the bad.

views is that they are relatively character-driven, and while the action sequences have all been pretty well done, they are so plugged into the emotional core of the films that these don't play like typical blockbuster roller-coaster-ride type films. Or, and I hadn't considered this before, maybe it's because they aren't great films. Up until now, I have really liked the films, but I love seeing Spidey realized on screen so much that perhaps the kid in me has clouded my critical judgment. As much as I love the films, I still have only seen each one twice, and as someone who's seen Citizen Kane about 15 times, Lawrence of Arabia about ten, and many other faves multiple times, it's not as if I have a problem with watching flicks many times over. What gives?
So, Sandman really kills Uncle Ben in this movie?
by MonteCristo
Apr 15th, 2007
10:09:44 PM
I mean, that would be the worst decision Raimi could make. Especially since after the novelization said that "Peter felt no longer responsible for his uncle's death". I thought that was something thrown in the novel to piss off the fans. I thought, that in the "reality" of the film, Sandman's relationship with Peter would parallel Peter's relationship with Peter. Nothing's set in stone, but I fear Raimi might mess up an otherwise good movie with an unnecessary plot point. I hope my fears are unfounded, but I don't want another "Last Stand"...I really don't.

They do use stuntmen where they can and i think the CGI is pretty much as good as could be done in the time given. I fucking hate how these stupid fucking directors decide its a good idea to kill off the villains at the end of superhero movies. First Burton fucks with us by killing off the joker in the first movie, raimi fucking kills off Doc Oc (arguably spidey's greatest adversary but personally i believe he's second to venom), and now HES GOING TO FUCKING DEAL OUT VENOM?!?!??! ALSO FUCK YOU AICN... when have you ever deleted a section of a spoiler review? Dont you usually just fuckin put it so you have to highlight it or ad it as extreme spoiler alert? that it is a bad thing that the action scenes are plugged into the emotional aspects of the film?

Surely that's what we want!

There is noting better than an action scene you have an emotional envolvement in, that is where all the tension comes from, caring what happens to the characters.

I think the Peter V Goblin fight we saw in the sneak peak showed this. Having Peter fight Harry but not really want to hurt him at the same time as loosing the wedding ring May gave him while probably worrying about being late to meet MJ worked very well. Layering levels of conflict ontop of each other is the best way to envoke tension.

Why did i read the final part in the 2nd review.

I completely agree with you... Killing supervillians is complete shit... Nolan got it right with Batman Begins: scarecrow lives. They can kill Ras as much as they want cuz he is immortal, so no complaints there. Killing venom, wtf mate. Someone needs to tell these directors that they don't have to kill off their villians

I never considered why I don't have any drive to see the first two films again. Maybe it's because they're a little depressing? Maybe I relate too much with Peter Parker? When I was a kid,I was bitten by a brown recluse spider, and my dad gave me a Spider-Man book to read to cheer me up when I was recovering--it was actually quite touchy. I developed some serious problems that put me in ICU for a day. After that, I was hooked. But I never read many of the comic books, just really dug the character. And my dad died too young, so maybe there's too much of him intertwined with the Spidey mythos. Who knows?

I did learn one thing from that spider encounter. Spiders are not posionous per se. They are venomous. Actually, I learned two other things. Don't let recluse spiders bite you. And if you get bit by a spider, have it checked in case you've encountered a spider that's very venomy.

Is there anyone here who still thinks Spidey is superior to 1? Sure when you first see it it seems like a high octane expanded upgrade but after repeat veiwings you realize just how hollow the film is. I fear this simply a continuation of this trend. Spider-man sequels seem to be very pretty wrapping paper but when you open the box theres nothing there.

And this was my original text:

And that should have been "Chinese."

in saying that they are not as re-watchable as some action films. And it probably is because instead of just watching the action you are emotionally involved so it's not as easy to watch. Never really thought about it that way. It's wierd I actually re-watch the comic book films i like least most, like Fantastic 4 or SR, prob because I can just turn my brain off and watch the pretty visuals.

As for brown recluse spiders...I live in England and we don't have anything venomous here. But a few years back I was travelling aroung the US and was staying with some mad people I met in Pahrump Navada and there was brown recluses about. People go on about black widows but they are pussies in comparison. Don't recluses make your flesh rot away or something?

I was lucky that the bite didn't go necrotic.
by Bronx Cheer
Apr 15th, 2007
11:33:28 PM

I learned after the experience that some people even get gangrene from the bastards. I was lucky. I've known people to get black widow bites, and they can be a problem, but when you look into what spiders will kick your ass, the recluses are up there.

I was hiding from my mom because I threw a rock at a car driving too fast through our neighborhood, and the driver got out to chase me down. I climbed into a box in our garage, and it turns out I was not alone in the box. I felt the bastard crawling on me in the dark, could tell it was something big, and when I jumped out of the box, I guess he'd already bitten me. Suffice it to say that I gave away my hiding spot.

That was a rough day. My dad kicked my ass, and later that night I got all spiderbite-funky and was taken off to the hospital.

I'll shut up now. (I'm sure I should do that more often...shut up, that is.

Quentin and his buddy made a film basically based on a genre of cult films. By definition, they're not for everybody. Don't care how much of an ad blitz. I think you kind of have to be in on the joke, or know the type of movie the flick's an homage, too. I think most people saw the ads and said "What the hell is that ridiculous movie?"

And none of those action scenes sounds even remotely worth that much money....I can only imagine that this is just the cost of shooting in NYC for a long period, and all the cast and crew demanding mad money for as guaranteed a hit as anything. In any case, I'll see it, but I mean, these are hardly great movies. Check Superman, X2, Sin City, V For Vendetta, A History of Violence, Shogun Assassin, Ghost World and the first Batman animated movie from the 90s. And if Venom is killed off, that will be truly gay and will result in a grave backlash, I guarantee it.

Brock is a very simple character. He is a sleazy get-rich quick whiner who thinks the world owes him and when he can't get his way, he blames everyone else for his mistakes. No real depth needed to show that.

Also, Raimi hits every point of what happens when the parasite bonds with you: you gain power, you lose your mind, you eventually lose your identity, then you finally lose your body to it. There is nothing to be gained by having more of Venom or Carnage from that standpoint now. At the first sighting of the alien after SM3, Spidey would just make a loud noise and kill it.

That's the same reason why I don't want to see Venom in another Spider-Man movie. Lets say for the sake of argument that the parasite's bonding with brock allowed it to rebuild Brock after SM3 and become Venom once again... What now? Go after Spidey again and be reduced to ash a 2nd time? No drama. Nothing.

Oh... and Venom didn't make spidey popular....

Amazing Spider-Man has been one of the VERY few "stable" comics. It's sales are virtually guaranteed. While Venom certainly has a strong fan base(I being a HUGE collector of Venom myself) I would never make the claim that Venom alone accounts for Spider-Man popularity in the 90's to the current high.

Actually, I would say it has to do with the 90's comics-based cartoons, the major push in merchandising, and the movies that made Spider-man even more popular than he was previously. Yes, Venom is a recent creation, but think about how many good arcs involve Venom... Answer: 2. His debut and first rematch are the only things Venom has been an intriguing character in. Venom's "Lethal Protector", Carnage-related stories, and the current Gargan Venom are all jokes and just beating a dead horse til there is nothing left but a pile of broken bones.

Why in the hell would Harry turn and help Peter in the end? look at it this way:

Peter Kills Harry's Father. When Harry can finally confront him on it, (two years later when Peter has lied about being spiderman the whole time) Peter DOESN'T DENY IT initially, but bascially says, "we don't have time for this."

So, after saving MJ from Doc Oc, Peter DOESN'T go back and settle with Harry. He leaves Harry alone to stew for months. In the mean time, Harry is getting a Goblin arsenal together to go hunt Pete Down.

Harry smacks Pete around and the streets and confronts him on the side of that building, and only cause he's losing does Peter now try to deny responsibility for killing Harry's father. Harry was right. Pete should have known this was coming.

But Pete pulls ahead and clotheslines Harry and Harry get badly injured gets amnesia. But that starts to break, and he wants answers again and he confronts Peter again, and Peter blows half his face off with a Pumpkin bomb for asking.

So now, Pete's in trouble, cause Sandman and Venom have decided it's time to give Spider-man a long over-due ass whupping, and Pete's pussing out cause he thinks he might die and MJ is freaking out that her meal ticket (Pete) will die, so she goes and begs Harry to save Pete. Harry reminds her that Pete killed his father, lied about it for years, belittled the importance of that death, refused to come back to settle and explain things, clothes lined Harry and then blew half his face off. So, he explains, he's not that sad to see Pete Die at this point, especially since he brought it on himself.

Then MJ, being the nagging and self-important shrew she is, makes this speech about how "we have to forgive each other" and shit and basically calls Harry a Pussy and an asshole for not saving a former friend who totally betrayed him. For some reason we cannot fathom, Harry still somewhat respects MJ's opinion, and gets guilt tripped into saving Peter.

Harry gets so screwed by these movies, particularly this last one, it aint even funny. And he gets killed for it too. poor bastard.

Which movies have you been watching IG76? Unless you just got through watching Superman Returns...

Style_92, I don't know how that all plays out between Harry and Pete, but clearly Pete ends up turning into an ass and forgets what is important. He doesn't know how to balance his life, everything is a struggle. Not saying it's right, but his attention was probably diverted from making things 'right' with Harry. Though Harry chose to ignore what his Dad did once he discovered the Goblin arsenal. He was at the parade when the Goblin attacked after all. He ended up being consumed by revenge, hence his willingness to give Doc Ock what he needed. Poor bastard indeed.

This movie has had practically no security around it. And I guess that's no big deal, but I am surprised at how little will be surprising in a couple of weeks when we all see this movie. It sounds like it's going to be fun. And I do like the idea of the battle royale at the end. Very cool stuff. Raimi has managed to do things with these movies that (sadly) so many other comic book movies fail to accomplish-- he has translated the genre seamlessly into film. Cheers, Raimi. And thank you as well.

Wasn't there a suppostion that the 4th villian was Bruce Campbell playing an actor playing Mysterio in the Spider-Man movie being filmed within Spider-Man 3? Anyone?

I too think Venom is stunt villian in retrospect, but I loved him as a kid. I liked McFarlane's evil grin version. However, when the gaping maw with the incredible tongue version came about (Larson) I lost interest.

Is there something else that can be made into a movie? Do I have to watch what is basically the same movie over and over, even if that movie is good? Spidey has to bring a villain to justice. Is that villain's powers stronger than his own. Nope, not in the end. Hope he can get (and keep) the girl. Wow, being Spidey is tough emotionally - do you think he wants to give it up, or can he live with the responsibility. That's all great for one move, or I could live with two movies, but how much longer do I have to re-live this story? Please do something new, Holywood.

Has to be, the world comes to an end that year anyway.

Besides, Here's why the spidey films are intolerable upon rewatch. You realize that Tobey Maguire can't act. His whole schtick is tiny facial tics that ocilate between sad/stunned and slightly disgusted to vaguely happy-ish. When he's actually called upon to deliver lines, he mumbles them and calls it acting

Secondly, Pete's toils in the comics were bearable because Spider-man was such an upbeat and fun character. But Spider-man is just a blank in the movies. You don't get inside his head. Oh, you get inside Pete's head for all his domestic shit, but never his thoughts and reactions to being Spider-man.
Spider-man 2.1
by Style_92
Apr 16th, 2007
02:34:29 PM
Kills pete's credibility. in the theatrical cut, it's easy to believe the clap trap that his Spider-man persona is what's messing him up in every other area of life. But rewatching as Spidey 2.1, that's revealed to be a sham. Evidence one: stopping those crooks in the car didn't take much time out of his trip, so Pete would have been late to her play and not allowed in anyway, even if it hadn't happened. Evidence 2: New scene in 2.1 where Pete is seen in Connor's class but deliberately not taking notes, just doodling.

So he IS just a lazy bastard that blows off his responsibility! being Spider-man is just incidental.

speaking of which, why is that whenever this site gets a positive moview submitted, ie: where the reviewed does NOT shred the movie, mainly out of confusion, ignorance or jealousy, every screams plant(!). are you all so naive to believe that two positive reviews of spidey3 are plants?

additionally, do you REALLY think this movie needs to send two positive plant reviews to aicn? if so, you better check yourself. this movie opens in china first, then japan. both places that don't know of or care to know of or need to know of or even have access to (in china's case, harry's too lib for the chinese to give the kids access to the site) this site for it to make much of a difference.

The thing is, plant has taken on a new meaning in AICN talk backs besides it's original intent. The original intent was to suggest the studio had hired someone to write a positive review and send it to Harry, posing as Joe Bloe fan, and try to trick the audience into thinking the man on the street truly liked the movie. This, has happened once or twice verifiably, but probably remains a rare case in it's truest form.

Ofcourse, original intent of a term does not bother most talkbackers. So, the term plant is usually bandied about just to describe a person who has a positive opinion of a movie or project in which the strong tide of talkbacker opinion is negative. It's a term used by the majority to try to marginalize and dismiss the opinion of the minority.

This ofcourse is pseudo-fascist behavior, which is common among organized fandoms. Abberant and discordant opinions must be destroyed, only then will there be harmony. It sucks, because this squelches freedom of opinion, but Whadya gonn do.

04:11:40 PM
See here, he thouroughly misuses the term plant. either that or he genuinely beleives that the first reviewer was hired by the studio, which is an even more ignorant opinion to have.

No, the first review was just written by one of those fans, you know them, that love the movies so much they've specifically put blinders on to ignore the faults of those movies. Just enthusiastic fan, nothing more. Most talkbackers embrace Batman Begins in this way, although it too has many large flaws to pick over.

Marko: "I needed money for the medicine(for his daughter). I told your uncle...all I wanted was the car. I was scared. He said, 'Why don't you put the gun away and go home?' I turned to see my buddy running over with the cash. I was scared, and your uncle stood up, and I don't know, my gun went off...There was a flash, a puff of smoke, and I was standing there with this stupid expression on my face and the old guy on the ground. My buddy, good ol' Caradine, he jumped in the car and peeled outta there. Left me behind to take the fall. I got on the ground next to...to Ben. He looked puzzled, like he couldn't understand what had gone wrong. I tried to pull him to his feet, shouted at him to get up. Then I heard the siren. I let his body slide outta my hands and to the pavement, and then I lit out of there just as the crowd was gathering. I...I spent a lotta nights wishin' I could take it back." (To his daughter) "I still want to be with you more than anything. But I did wrong. Gotta pay for what I did." Then, his daughter says, "Won't you forgive him? I know he did a terrible thing to you, but he's a good man." Then Spidey says, "We've all done terrible things. I...I forgive him." And, thus, an inane plot point was born. I'm sure they think the drama in the scene will overshadow everyone's common sense, but Batman's line sounded good too the first time. This is turning out to be another "Spider-Man Forever".

and Raimi plays up the angst to the point that it's depressing and I'm rolling my eyes. Aunt May and Mary Jane are both such downers. Maguire's blankness worked okay in the first when he is supposed to come across as young and innocent, but it gets tired to continue in that vein and continue he has. The character should be much more fun, I still say Franco would've made a better Peter. You can't have real lows if you never have highs!

Im already in anticipation of the spiderman 3 dvd, so I can freeze frame all of the silly ass faces Maguire makes. Highlights of spidey 2: Rooftop running- After Parker decides to become spiderman once again "im back, Im back, MY back MY back" as he is running on the rooftop in slowmo, he makes the face of a 70 year old man trying to lift a truck off his wife. Train Sequence- When Spidey has to stop the moving train from leaping off of the dead-end tracks, he lodges himself on front of the train, and catches nearby buildings with his webbing to stop the momentum. He sports the mug of an irate down syndrome afflicted jewish business owner with bowel issues.

Venom is "contained" inside a specialized unit and stored away in a secret facility after the symbiote is seperated from Brock using a sonic weapon. #3. Aunt May reveals she's known Peter is Spider-man. #4. Venom kills Sandman. #5. Gwen Stacy DOES NOT die. There you have it, no more sugarcoated nonsense. Believe what you will. "VK"

he refers to comic-book based film trilogies, like the third batman movie (sucked) the third superman (sucked) the third x-men (sucked but not sooo much..well it sucked) and the first catwoman (cause it sucked for three). So he's leaving out return of the king, back to the future 3, indiana jones 3, etc, ok?

(It's getting old making every villain sympathetic.) The scenes with him and Peter were nicely acted, though. I liked the quirky scenes like MJ running in the wedding dress, Peter walking along happy as a clam, Peter imagining a conversation between himself and Uncle Ben. Of course the scenes with Harry, Franco's acting is more intense I wish Maguire and Dunst would not underplay so much. It's a comic book movie, it's mythology, it's theater.

for Biel as you do, clearly. I think she is a good actress, the thing is MJ doesn't really require some fantastic actress. In fact the character always sort of reminded me of a fantasy/horror character more than a real person, particularly later on. Peter seems more real to me than her, I never liked it when they were married in the comics, I always liked Gwen or Black Cat better (before she became a major slut).
Isn't he still married to MJ

I'd have flipped them. Maguire's brooding personality alternating with childlike innocence would've been perfect for Harry in making him seem dangerous and vulnerable. Franco's Harry by far has the strongest performance (all the villains do, I guess), but he's not wierd enough for Harry. Can't figure it out with Franco. He is a really likeable actor but he just keeps picking mediocre films.
And Tobey would've had the red zigzag hair.

Here is my treatment for Spider-Man 4: Gwen Stacy disrobes and joins Mary Jane Watson, already in the shower at Peter's apartment. For 90 minutes we see the ladies soap each other up, probe and kiss each other, etc. Cut to Peter (as Spidey) swinging into an open window of the apartment. He takes off his mask. Smash close-up on Peter's face. His eyes flick about the apartment--he hears the shower running. Knowingly, he smiles. Fade to black, roll credits, and give me my awards.

well i think recasting in any future spider man movies is stupid, if u cant get back the originals then let it go..... and just because venom is "dealt with" doesnt neccessarily mean hes killed off, it means hes beaten, plus im apt to believe whoever said it earlier that the deaths are HARRY and AUNT MAY

Now I heard so many spoilers for this movie, but me as a trekkie-like Spider-Man fan (or Spider-Fan if you will) I heard Venom dies and doesn't get much action or backstory. Im thinking of Venom from the 1990s Fox cartoon and I look at the Spider-Man 3-version of him. Not very similar; too puny, not a deep, raspy voice, and doesn't say "We are Venom" either. I just hope Venom and Spidey have one hell of a slobberknocker that tops any fight scene in the previous 2 films. I've watched so many different trailers and conclude that: Harry and Peter fight in the very beginning of the movie, Harry dies, Spider-Man teams up with Harry at the end resulting in Harry's death, and there wont be many surprise fight scenes since we've seen them all in the combined trailers (just like what happened when they promoted HULK) .Also, its only 2 hours and 20 minutes long. I wanted a Peter Jackson-like 3 hour epic smackdown with Venom getting at least 45 minutes of screentime. But alas, thats not the case. I hope the critics are right when they say that the fans will be pleased, because I dont think they stuck too close to the cartoon or comics that much. But hey, at least it not gonna be like the debacle that happened to X-Men: The Last Stand from what I hear.
Can I add another comment?
by Mr_MovieGoer

I would like to because I really hope this movie breaks the comic-trilogy curse, because I feel like I was visually molested by X-Men: The Last Stand and insulted by what they added and took away. Spider-Man 3 doesn't seem to have that problem other than Venom could've used more backstory and fightscenes. Im actually hopeful about the 3rd installment, and I might need to have a full physical beforehand so I don't have a heart-attack while taking in all the visual marvels of this film which clearly used every penny of $258 million wisely. If the movie truly is as good as the critics and fan-critics say, then we as movie goers must do everything to make sure that Spider-Man 3 topples Titanic is all-time box office sales. All it has to do is break $650 million to do so. Spidey can do it. 10 more days left until the summer movie season swings into action with the most anticipated superhero movie ever.
