The Sarah Silverman Program, Andy Barker P.I., etc. I saw the first two episodes of "Drive", they're pretty good, but there's definitely room for improvement. And technically speaking, Prison Break can be considered a far superior FOX new series(although it sucks now). So let's just wait and see how "Drive" will play out. I for one think its chances of a pick-up are slim to none.

Would make a great 13-episode mini-series. But a full-on series which would be forced to stretch things out for five or so years if it's successful? I just don't see that much mileage in the format (sorry).

... to find any American TV series without at least one Whedon alumnus on it, wouldn't it? "The Shield" has three ex-Whedons on its writing staff alone.

As for "best new Fox series in years," I haven't seen "Drive" yet but it wouldn't shock me to see it live up to that statement. You'd have to go all the way back to 2004, when "House" premiered, to find a new Fox show I could stand to watch.

we'll be seeing a lot of flashbacks to discover the motivations of the different characters... but the main story is a CROSS COUNTRY CAR RACE. It's also kinda like survivor how they have specific tasks for everyone to do, like if you;re last place on a certain part you have to kill a contestant and it seems like there will be alliances and all that crap.. So it's basically a little like survior and the amazing race but it's scripted.

I love Minear, and I'll give this show a shot, but you know how FOX has treated him in the past. Granted ,this does sound like his most accessible show. I just hate watching a new show, starting to love it, and then find out its gone. I fear this is going to happen to Raines, which has been surprising the hell out of me at how enjoyable it is.

My wife and I just finished watching it. Well, it's okay. Nowhere near as good as Firefly, but as good as Wonderfalls. It seems like it may have more mass appeal than either of those shows. I think Amy Acker should have been the lady with the baby instead of Fillion's wife. Spoiler: When they revealed the truck driver had his wife in the back, I cried out, "Lame!" Then again, when the daughter comented on, "blasting off into the unknown," both I and the show cried out, "Lame!" I really should have seen the connection between Corrina(sp.) and the girl at the start of part two. We liked it. We'll keep watching, but they can't expect us to wait 7 years to see who wins? Can they?

Well, it's because the Ending makes the whole Series and the storyline pointless! Actually, i was one of those "Fans", who liked watching this, but that crappy ending was something to puke on! And it was like making hope for a good end, as Mulder and Scully haven't died. If they let them die and letting other Characters go into their place, then it might have been ok for a Stupid-Bad - Ending, but NO, it was all a waste-of-time in the end. And if a producer wants to resurrect that series, he should make shure to include a Happy-End, or he might state, that this playd in the world of "War of the Worlds", before that story begins.

...all its saying is that Drive is one big commercial for a few car companies - which it is, right enough - this is where it became mainstream folks, this is where we accepted the blurring of the lines between the show and the ad-break, constantly bombarded with sponsor messages... as Homer is wont to say, "In your face, suckers!"

but I liked the pilot, although crazy lady has to go, and quick...along with those 3 stupid cheerleader lesbians... and the beautifulsexy couple (nice ass on the ladee though... ) - and of course the nerdy scientist with the annoying daughter, drive them off the road someone please... let's see, who else....... Fillion can stay, but he should slam on the breaks and chuck yer one out the door at the soonest available opportunity...

p.s. - and couldn't they do without all the blue/green screen/back projection driving shit, it looks crap, almost as bad as The 4400's "night time" stuff....

it's painfully obvious that it is the exact same stretch of road over and over. be on the lookout for the overpass in the background and the on-ramp sign in the opposite lane. i shit you not- over and over. and ashok0, i'm currently watching the x-files season 4 and you're right, it's some of the best tv i've ever seen. "musings of a cigarette smoking man" contradicts x-files lore a few times, but it remains, in my opinion, one of the show's top hours. i just watched "small potatoes", the episode where that chameleon guy with a tail impersonates mulder and puts the moves on scully. good stuff... And yes, Herc is right about a lot of his opinions about Drive. The overall mystery is extremely strong, even though i didn't get too much love for any of the characters, save for Fillion's Tully and that blonde chick he drives with. I'll defintely catch hour three tomorrow.

As I said, I thought the premise was a bit lame and I'm the type of person when I heard about a show that had spaceships making drops on planets permeated with people on horseback, I was like "Sweet!". But I have faith in Minear and Nathan is an expressive actor. If he is pissed off, you can feel the heat; if he is dumbfounded, you can't help but laugh. I had good hopes going in.

That said, the show fucking flew by. I looked at the clock at the end and I couldn't believe it was over. It did not feel like I had just sat watching a show for two hours. I fell in love with the father/daughter team; they were so encouraging of each other, you'll want to bake them both cookies. There were a few good chuckles and I laughed out loud when Nathan and the chick left the gas station - the music, the cocky looks were a perfect set up for what happens next.

I do have the feeling though, that Talkbackers will find fault with the plausability of the show and be unkind. That's okay. This show doesn't feel like rocket science (But it does have a rocket!) and I don't think it intends to be. But there are some outstanding character actors in this that makes it tight. It's fun. And fast. Give it a chance. That goes for FOX as well.V

splungiest and darthuser are correct
by Hercules
Apr 15th, 2007
06:04:45 PM
the last time I called something "best new show," it was "Studio 60," back last summer. The last time I called something "best show," it was "Veronica Mars" at the end of last year.

I did call "Andy Barker" "best network sitcom," which I think most people understand is a different thing. It means I think "Andy Barker" is better than "King of Queens" and "The Class" and "My Name is Earl," which appear on broadcast networks, but not necessarily "South Park" or "The Venture Bros.," which appear on cable. Similarly, it does not mean I think "Barker" is necessarily better than "Galactica" or "Heroes" which are not sitcoms.

Hope this clears things up.
Thanks, Herc

06:13:08 PM
Sorry to doubt you.

It is perfectly permissible to judge different things "best" in different categories. This is why the Oscars have a best adapted screenplay, best original screenplay, best actor, a best supporting actor, best actress, best direction, best cinematography and so on. If you object to the word "best" being used over and over again, you should complain first about every one of the thousands of award ceremonies that hand out dozens of "best" awards each and every year.

Xiphos, you should learn to read more carefully.

On the question of "how does it continue?", how do you continue a shot called "Prison Break" once they break out of prison? How do you do a 25th hour of a show called "24"? This is what Fox does. *** On the question of "how will it end", a series finale does not negate an entire season. Okay, I didn;t follow X-files but I find it hard to believe the ending was so bad it removed hours - cumulatively, days or weeks - of enjoyment from your memories. Hey, I didn't really understand the final "Prisoner" and "Twin Peaks" ended on an unresolved, downbeat cliff hanger. Still great shows. *** On the question of "Is it worth it to invest in a show that may get canceled?" - ALL TV shows MAY get canceled. that's the risk you take. I loved Wonderfalls and liked Invasion and The Nine. Someone please get the creators to write a novelization of a series conclusion for those shows and I'll read it. But look, I love "Raines" and make an effort to not miss an episode exactly because I know it won't last. (Of course it helps that the crime-solving stories are relatively self-contained and there's no continuity heavy series arc. Well, other than if Raines getting psychological help will cure him of his hallucinations, at which point there's no show. (See, that premise comes with a built in conclusion.) *** Is "Drive" being done real time, showing each hour of the race in an episode? or would that be too derivitice of "@4" and 'The Nine"? Or will it take as long as it takes to tell the front and back stories of each contestant, ala "Lost", in which case the entire series, no matter how long, could be forever locked in one week in spring of 2007. (See how I slipped "Locke"d into a "Lost" reference. I'm that good.)

I wish the one Salazar brother wouldn't say "homes" all the time, and it's discouraging that Dylan Baker is credited as guest starring, leading me to believe he probably won't be sticking around. This show is also broad enough that I could see it doing well on FOX, especially airing before 24. In regard to the comments about how it can last past a season, I'm just worried that Minear has gotten so used to FOX cancelling his shows, he only has a season worth of material planned, because he's not expecting it to go on.

"homes" one more time, I'm going to hit him with my purse. Still, "those thugs were really nice boys." I missed the accident at the beginning of the 2nd ep last time; the chick flying out the back window was sick! And for some reason, I think Corinna is working for the sponsers rather than against them. What other songs do you think they are going to use in this series? I've got five bucks on Highway Star by Nazareth.ö

It is what it is, and you definitely have to suspend disbelief right off the bat or you're not going to be going anywhere with them, but there's a good mix of characters that could lead to some fun interplay. Fillion's always a joy to watch in the right role, and this is a good one, giving him the chance to alternate aggression the second he thinks he's on to something with confused desperation when he's lost in the maze of this 'race'. "I think I should've shot you" was the line the line that had got me in a spit-take, although the obvious resolution was not only horribly telegraphed, it was a fairly egregious cheat considering the writing in no way earned my belief that she was actually willing to kill anybody anyway. But overall, for now, I'm in for the ride.

I wasn't bowled over, but it has potential. One minor pet peeve. I just wished everyone on the show wasn't so stupid. The clues were easy enough that a fifth grader could figure them out (possible series cross over potential with "Are you smarter than a Fifth Grader?"). Come on! People had trouble figuring out that the Jupiter was not an astromical reference, but Jupiter, FL. They didn't need to give a clue that the Kennedy they were referencing in the second clue was "Cape Kennedy" or Cape Canaveral. Yet most of the of the racers struggled with these clues as if it was the math question that Matt Damon solved in Good Will Hunting. I guess they didn't want to make the audience feel dumb if they couldn't figure out such a simple clue.

Like others have said, with Fox's track record for cancelling new shows, I'm not ready to get on board this yet. I like Fillion, loved Angel, and Firefly, but I don't know... something about the previews for this show seemed super cheesy. I think I'll do hat I did with Prison Break... wait until there are about 10 episodes out before I seriously start watching it. But who knows, maybe I'll get bored one day and watch a few episodes of Drive and get hooked. I'd prefer to take a wait-and-see approach though.

Did anyone else see a missed oportunity in not casting Christina Hendricks as the woman in the truck with Fillion? Who better to play a coniving, is she good or bad, hot as hell, ying to Nathan's yang (wait... I said YANG. snicker!). She would have fit so perfectly, and she is SO much hotter than the blonde chick. But I will continue watching until it is inevitably cancelled by those IDIOTS at FOX. Fux you FOX! I will never forgive you for cancelling Firefly!!! Anyone who likes DRIVE should pick up the Firefly series on DVD. You will not be sorry!

I guess that says a lot about FOX if this is the best they've done in years, huh? Certainly the WAR AT HOME isn't bringing in the acclaim. Very LOSTy - except the mystery in LOST wasn't largely predicated on the people with answers just not talking about them. Oh, and the wit and interesting characters helped that show too. But hey, I'm a little intrigued - I think it'll get tired quick though, so hopefully the ratings will be just high enough to justify wrapping the whole thing up by episode 10 or so.

Yeouch -- just in... from Berman at Mediaweek: In series-premiere news, the two-hour launch of Fox drama Drive was stuck in second gear, with a mere (and fourth-place) 3.8/ 6 from 8-10 p.m. Despite the massive promotional hype, Drive only built from week-ago repeats of The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy and American Dad (avg. 3.5/6 on April 8) by 9 percent. One year earlier, Fox’s combination of a repeat of The Simpsons, a repeat of Family Guy and two original episodes of The War at Home averaged a 4.0/ 7 in the overnights. Here is the half-hour breakdown for the disappointing Drive: 8:00 p.m. 4.0/ 6 8:30 p.m. 3.9/ 6 9:00 p.m. 3.6/ 5 9:30 p.m. 3.7/ 5 Farewell Drive, we hardly knew ye...

You'd be like she was in that movie, no way that movie kicked ass and she's like just some average character on some tv show. lol the al queda in iraq, I wonder who wrote that line. And that the writers have a definite series of events, or in other words a Beginning, Middle and End in mind for this show. When I heard the promos for Heros (the ones that say The Last Five Chapters) I thought Oh No, it's going to be over (I'm sure they're just referring to the last five for the season), but then I thought "I don't mind if this is the last five _ever_." Heroes is a great show and if it ends now I'm fine with it. I'm perfectly fine with really great shows that are on for just a year or two as long as that's what the plan is from the beginning. That way everything has purpose, everything moves the story along and there's nothing holding the writers back from doing pretty much anything they want.
