I have a lot of love for the movie. Yes it's ludicrous and camp but this is Flash Gordon for Christ sakes, what more do you want then max von sydow as Ming and peter wyngarde as Klytus. I must say from the writers of... really doesn't inspire confidence. Charmed was watchable enough but then it had Alyssa Milano, Rose Mcgowan and Shannon Doherty. Hell even Holly Marie Combs had a milf like quality to her.

OK, so Sam Jones couldn't act his way out of a paper bag (to think that Kurt Russell auditioned for the role too!), but there's SO much to love! Timothy Dalton hamming it up brilliantly as Barin, Brian Blessed playing himself as Vultan, camp dialogue, comedic violence (and special effects), an eye-searing pallete, and one of the most inspired soundtracks in movie history, not to mention Melody Anderson and Omella Muti (god-DAMN, she was hot!) having a catfight while not wearing very much...

The design of the moons is great, the design of Hawk city is great - everyone apart from Melody Anderson and Sam Jones acts the film pitch perfect. It's a bit on the kinky side and if Dalton had played Bond with the same twinkle that he played Barin then he wouldn't be so unfairly maligned at the moment!

I'd bore myself into Whaura's space vacuum - if I didn't bore her beforehand with my tales about how much I think the disk spikey fight is well GAY!! Men with Whips? WTF?! Also does anyone else think that with golden bikini fighting Weisz dropping out of The Mummy 3, seemingly conservative approaches or names behind the remakes of other previously sexed up material of Barbarella and Flash Gordon, that these upcoming productions are gonna be a bit on the static and drab side and not as much fun as the previous films that they are sequeling/remaking?

...I went with my father to see Popeye and then Flash Gordon. What a perfect afternoon! Both films were generally panned, but I think both have stood the test of time and have well-deserved cult followings. You f'ing bandwagon jumpers. The 80s Flash film has so many classic lines and moments that I do not envy anyone trying to revisit the territory. However, let's not fight amongst ourselves. 80's Flash isn't our enemy, Ming is. Let's team up and fight him!

That movie is a wonderful flick. I'd love to see it get the Star Trek treatment and have somebody release a version with updated FX. It could never surpass the original, of course, but I wonder what it would look like if the Hawkmen's wings weren't made of cardboard and the lizardmen actually looked like lizardmen instaed of guys with red faces being eaten by a cheap lizardman costume.

Flash Gordon is PURE CAMP GENIUS from start to finish. Queen, Brian Blessed and Timothy Dalton have already been mentioned, but its the execution that makes is a clssic. From Ming's super sexy psycho daughter to dirty perv ming's attempt to get Dale into his harem, ridiculous 80s costumes and pretty blood curdling action, it's a film that delivers. However maybe Herc is right that this is ALL down to the Queen Theme which has to be one of the most memorable movie themes of all time. Would the film have just been another forgettable cheese-fest without it? Even though the film delivers more cheddar than a Hasselhoff 'concert', there is one scene even I find unpalatable. The part where Flash Gordon uses his American football skills to try and take down Ming's henchmen while Dale jumps up and down like a cheerleader, is so horrible, I have to cover my eyes and ears or leave the room.

So much love for the 80s film--nice to see a talkback full of that as opposed to venom (and Venom, for that matter). It was and will always be great fun, the exact kind of fun that's missing from almost all of the Sci-Fi Channel. If they hit the right note on this, they could make it great, campy, glorious fun. I say, get the Queen theme song AND get Brian May to do a new soundtrack! GilesT and Samson_K make good points about Timothy Dalton. Stick a tuxedo on Prince Barin, and you have a Bond that would rival Connery. And you'd also have the world's best Tony Stark.

I was never a big fan of the 1980s "Flash Gordon" film, but I never hated it either. Herc is right, though. The music should be picked up for the Flash Gordon show. Which, from the people Herc listed, sounds C-grade at best. Sometimes I'm surprised by the work that hacks produce, but nothing about this show sounds remotely cool. Seems like it's the exact opposite of "Battlestar Galactica," by which I mean silly, uncompelling, and cheaply produced. And maybe that's what Sci-Fi is going for.

Ah, Flash Gordon! Or, is it Flash! Aaa-aah? It's a love it, or hate it movie, I suppose. Of course, I was 9 years old when I saw it at the theater. For this kid, it was the year of Empire Strikes Back(most notably), and a couple of cheesy entries, Cannonball Run, and Flash Gordon. Maybe The Black Hole, but that might have been 1979. Anyway, as a 9 year old I loved Flash, and was completely oblivious to the bad acting, poor script, etc. Sure, I was a bigger ESB fan, but I still loved me some Flash. I must have watched that movie(primarily on tv)every time it was on. And, back then that was a lot. It was my introduction to actors who were too good to be in that film. I had probably seen Sydow and Topol before, but not Blessed and Dalton. Despite the script, and SOME ham acting, those guys, and pretty much any other actor with a British accent pulled it off. Topol was probably too hammy, but Dalt, Blessed, and Sydow were fantastic. Even Ornella Muti(who may have been the hottest woman unknown to most US viewers at the time) put in a decent performance. That said, Sam J. Jones, and Melody Anderson weren't so great. Love them to death, and even met Anderson a couple of times. She's super nice. Despite the less their less-than-average performances, I would say they embodied more spirit, and spunk than Portman, Lloyd, and Christensen(in the PT's), but that's not saying much. The special effects...well, it wasn't ILM. I did like the war rockets, and some of the comic strip look, however. I'm a huge Queen fan, and the soundtrack was largely good. Particularly the main theme, the Hero(end credits), and the war rocket battle theme. Perhaps, a bit keyboard heavy, but overall good. It's amusing to point out that GQ magazine picked it as one of the top 25 best bad movies ever. I think it was 10. And, on another GQ related note, I remember a Timothy Dalton James Bond interview(circa the great Bond flick, The Living Daylights). It went something like this.... GQ:"Let's talk Flash Gordon." TD:"Let's not." I got a kick out of that back then. What Timothy didn't realize is that they liked him in the role, just as I did. Hell, most of us kids didn't know who he was, and later explored his other movies. Just like Alec Guiness. Anyway, let's sum this up. I've got younger 20-something friends who didn't grow up with the movie, and they absolutely hate it. Of course, they've got things from their childhood that suck just as much or worse than Flash. But, that's pop culture human nature to love things you grew up with, and to dislike things that weren't apart of your childhood. Oh well, Flash Gordon is admittedly campy, but I still have a soft spot for it. And, Brian Blessed, if you're out there. Please diiiiiive on in to Dragoncon this year.

This half season of South Park has been fantastic so far. Last night's rip on 300 was great, and there hasn't been a bad episode so far (the 24 parody was mediocre in my opinion, but by no means bad). Of course, by me saying this, next week's "finale" will probably be subpar now.

Was on DVD circa late 90's early 2000's. Bought it back then. Wish I had bought several of those when they were marked down 7.00-10.00 dollars. I think they fetch a decent price on the bay. Either way, there was a 25th anniversary disc released on region 2(UK). I may break down and buy it. Most dvd remotes have codes that allow for region free playing. As I recall, the disc was 5.1 and wide as opposed to the previous stereo sound. There may have been a documentary on the newer one, and Mike Hodges(director) and Brian Vultan Blessed commentary. I'm sure it will get released again one of these years, but it may not sell enough in the US. Who knows? I'm with you...bring it on Universal.

If that movie riles you to the point of detesting it I'd be surprised. It's camp, ridiculous and an explosion of glitter and shiny fabric, but it's hardly detestable. Any chance you can break down what makes it that bad in your eyes? I'm actually legitimately interested -- and the "missed opportunity" argument doesn't fly, because that can be said about a great many movies and TV shows. For a movie to be detestable you have to judge it on it's own merits. In the interests of full disclosure, though, I was pretty much going to love the movie after it was revealed on Blue Peter that Peter Duncan was going to die a horrible death in it...

Theres this shot near the end of the rocketship sequence,when Flash is going to crash the rocket into the barrier.Its an over the shoulder shot lookin out the windshield ,with the cockpit all on fire..It only lasts a split second but its Beau-tee-full.Another quick awesome shot is when the female commander(name)blasts a flamethrower style blast out of her ring.DOPE!

"Impetuous boy!", "flying blind on a rocket cycle?", "For Gods sake, strap yourselves down!", "What pills are they taking? Maybe we should execute their trainers?" Brian Blesseds laugh every time Flash or the Baron almost kill each other on the spiked disk of death. The look the Baron gives Vultan when he has the remote and the disk starts tilting. Ornella Mutis hot bod crawling on Flashes lap when they are traveling to the Baron. Her getting off seeing the Baron mercy kill the kid stung by the stump scorpion. Even the horrible craptacular lizardman costumes are classic camp. More and More and More and More and MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a kid I even had the LP soundtrack and played it constantly! Dammit, why can't it be on Comcast InDemand again?

First, I liked the music to this movie. And I liked the Flash Gordon pinball machine. Ming chuckled at you when you put in a quarter. Nobody's mentioned it yet (I think), so I will mention the funimation Flash Gordon cartoon series, which I liked okay. I remember Lion Man looked like a lion man, and there were lizard people who looked like lizard people (actually, I only remember female, whip-wielding lizard people who were overseers of slaves in a mine, but one of them thought Flash was hot stuff). I disliked the re-imagined cartoon that came out in more recent years with Flash and Dale as teens.

Best visual joke I've seen lately was when David Letterman announced he had home movies of Tom Cruise and Katie's wedding and then played the "wedding" scene from "Flash Gordon," where Queen is playing this hard-rock wedding march while Ming the Mrciless stands by as "groom" and guys in golden masks drag Flash's girlfriend to the altar in chains.

Flash Gordon is the shit, Herc is so wrong, it's DISGUSTING. I almost barfed when the title theme began at the end of Blades of Glory (yeah, I saw it. SO!?). It's not even just great as camp, it's great as a throwback to the old serials, period, way more so than the self-serious, self-important bullshit that was the Star Wars prequels. Since Lucas obviously wasn't going to once again capture the perfect tone of ANH and ESB, which found the exact line between being too serious and being too insane, he should have gone for the latter, Flash Gordon style, instead of the former. Man, Qui-Gon needed himself a rocket-cycle, and zombie Freddie Mercury needed to rise up and to clothesline John Williams to write a REAL super space opera score. FLASH IS ALIVE???????

The fact that a guy who worked on Charmed is handling the creative development of this is a good sign. It kind of worked in the 1980 movie because everyone back then immediately associated it with Joe Nameth, but now I have a hard time picturing Chad Pennington as the savior of the universe. I'd like to see Tim Minear or someone handle the reigns of the series (though the Farscape idea, I admit, is great). I hated the movie as a kid. Sorry. It had some decent ham, but it was painful to watch. Still, I love the concept of the serial SF adventure. I'm hoping they maintain a sense of fun, yet give it some sense of cohesion. BSG sucks as a thinly veiled political allegory. There is a reason it doesn't have ratings. We need a real adventure series. And bring back Firefly, but erase all memory of that damned movie, Serenity!

Having heard his solo stuff under the name British Whale, it's obvious that the ex-Darkness leader is the possessor of the Darkness sound. With his voice and guitar tone, he could completely nail the Queen vibe--fantastic idea! And maybe while they're at it, they could make this show "Kid Flash" (sorry DC) with Bruce Campbell as an older version of the 80s Flash, trying to rein in his wild son, played by a much worse actor. :)

My guess is that SciFi wants a show that ISN'T as serious or gritty as BATTLESTAR, but wants a replacement show for STARGATE SG1 that mirrors its tone -- that is, SciFi that's adventurous, but has a more fun and light tone to it. So since STARGATE is about to air its final 13 episodes, obviously they want something that can duplicate its tone and ideally it's success. On the other hand, I would be shocked if they went for all out camp like the old film. That would be an interesting gamble, but I don't really think it would fly week after week, but that's just my opinion. But the STARGATE analogy seems right to me, which is why the CHARMED guy has been brought in...

I'm telling you, Hodges knew _exactly_ what he was doing. It's impossible to do a "deliberately goofy" film. But somehow Hodges did it. I would pay to see this film on IMAX, with a raucous crowd of hilarous fans -- can you imagine?

A few years ago at San Diego Con as I was strolling along, I stumbled across a near mint FLASH GORDON poster -- not a reprint, the actual release poster -- that was done by Richard Amsel, who also did the art for the iconic RAIDERS poster. The guy selling it said "5 bucks and its yours. NO ONE likes that crappy movie. Not even the geeks around here." Me, regardless of the movie, I love movie poster artwork so for 5 bucks I took it on the spot. In fact, after all the geek love shown towards FLASH in this talkback, that reminds me. The U.S.S. Cygnus design was very cool (especially the bridge), the human cast was first rate, Maximilian was a badass co-villian, the opening theme music was eerie, and the fx of the black hole and meteor shower were superb. Unfortunately, the movie also had V.I.N.C.E.N.T., B.O.B., (perhaps the two most annoying robots in screen history) and those clunky security robots.

about how to do a Flash Gordon movie. Now I don't know nearly enough about the material to be really accurate but I am aware of the general idea of the story. The thing is, my Flash Gordon movie would probably be too dark. It would be less Star Wars and more BSG. I'd probably want to do two, the first being about the group (Gordon, Arden etc) finding a wormhole or something that's opened up on the edge of the solar system. They go to space to investigate, get sucked in and end up on Mongo. The rest of the movie would be about them trying to find a way back to Earth (not forgetting the predictable "Dale is captured by Ming" storyline) to warn the planet about Ming the Merciless and his planned invasion. A lot of the second film would actually take place on Earth. Gordon warnings have fallen on deaf ears, nobody believes the stories about the strange creatures encountered in the first film or that there's an evil tyrant on his way to conquer the planet. Of course Ming attacks, and Earth is quickly taken over. The second half of the film would involve Flash and Dale stealing a ship and going back through the wormhole to Mongo to try to convince the people there to rise up against Ming and essentially fight for their freedom and the freedom of Earth as well. I'm not sure if that storyline would make a good series of movies, but surely a big budget Flash Gordon movie would be a better option than a tv series on Sci-Fi?
