Definitely Cool Beans. Looks like a slightly modernized version of the original Iron Man suit from Tales of Suspense in the 60's... i mean come on you really think a POW has the time and resources to make it shiny Red and Gold? I know the iron suit I made as a POW didn't look half as good as this one.

Wow, that looks SUPERB. It totally captures the feel of the first comic and Stark's "first suit" as a POW. I still hate that Paltrow is in this -- just not a fan of hers AT ALL and she's HARDLY the actress I would've picked to be sexy Pepper -- but Downey will kick ass, and seeing this gives me great hope that they're going to knock it out of the park with the final Red Suit. So, so far, so good.

Well, except for Paltrow!

Cause a man made of iron just sounds so much cooler and rolls off the tongue better than most tougher metals. Man of Steel works, but Steel Man? Stupid. What is the conjecture among geeks - the grey suit is built while Stark is in captivity, he uses the suit to free himself from captivity, goes back to old America, builds a shiny red and gold suit and fights bad guys in the first movie? Or could possibly this grey suit be the main suit of the first movie, with red and gold in sequel? The grey suit looks good, definitely, but I'd be a little disappointed if there was no red/gold suit in this.

I have no idea what Iron Man is, or why there is a torch in this guys chest, but I'm judging this purely from my own ignorance which is that "Iron Man" is some kind of superhero. And that being the case, isn't RDJr just far too small to be convincing as a super hero? He's the super hero's nerdy friend, not the main ass kicking supremo. And thats what translates into this suit - sure it looks OK but if it was worn by someone 6 foot 5 and physically imposing, you'd just be thinking "Run...Dear God run for your lives from the metallic monster sent from Hades to serve his vengeance". As it is, and this is all very early - it looks slightly ridiculous for someone so short. Happy to be proven wrong as I generally like comic book films and all that. Anyone who knows more about Iron Bloke be sure to correct me.

the direct market animated Invincible Iron Man was actually a watchable flick. Easily on par with the X-men cartoons. -------------------------- Marvel is doing this SAFELY. The first film they made to usher in this new era of comic flicks was Blade. They tested the waters carefully with moves like that and prospered. This time they tested the water with a direct market animated film, and are proceeding from there. The pool is warm and the people inviting. Iron Man is gonna rock the deep end in some marco polo.

Both require reading words so why does it make someone stupid if they read comic books?

From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: [iron n. put comic books behind books. I'm sure something like Watchmen takes more brain power to read than a Dan Brown book. They shouldn't really be separated, both require you to read text it's just that one has you look at pictures aswell. So surely you are doing more with you brain than a normal book as you are studying asthetic images as well as reading text.

Granted, it looks like it from the photo above, but it actually take place in the present. It looks retro because billionare industrialist/inventor Tony Stark (who, as a POW is being forced by his captors to build a super weapon for them) essentially has to cobble the suit together from scrap. After he escapes and returns to the U.S., he uses his the vast resources of his company to build a sleek, super high-tech red and gold version of the suit which is even more powerful.

reflects a belief on my part that the visuals in a comic book help some readers understand the flow of the story, whereas in a book with no pictures, there is more effort required to visualize characters, places etc. It's about the decoding aspect of reading. There is absolutely no argument that there are comic books that are more challenging than many books with no pictures, but generally speaking, I think most people would agree that reading books with no pictures is more challenging. This does not mean that the experience is any better, or that reading comic books requires less intelligence.

This suit is dead on old school Iron Man. It makes sense because his suit changes over time. This is a real tribute to the source material. What you are calling "lame" is actually incorrect. What would be "lame" is if the suit did not look like Iron Man at all. Sort of the way the Batman suit looked in Batman and Robin. It was fucking terrible. That movie in general sucked. But the point here is that JF actually did his homework and is paying a real homage to the roots of the comic book. This is far from being lame it's perfect.

Also I read the script review and there was a mention that this movie is heading in the direction of Ang Lee's The Hulk. Well I am one of those in the minority that thinks Ang Lee's The Hulk is one of the best comic book movies ever put on film. It was mature and had a real sense of emotion behind it but it did not connect with the average moron because of that reason. So if Iron Man is headed in that direction then I have very high hopes for this movie being a quality and mature piece of work. So stoked.

the pictures do take away from some of the decoding they present a new kind of decoding. Much like watching a film. You brain has to look at the image and try and work out what is happening in the story often without the help of words.

It's swings and round-a-bouts really.

There are some things that would take a million words to describe that could be summed up in a single image.

There are some things a million images couldn't show that could be summed up in a few sentences.

And speaking of the red and gold armor, I'm really curious to see how Downey (or his stunt doubles) "fills it out" so to speak. In the comics, Iron man has very sleek proportions which will be difficult if not impossible to recreate with an actual man-in-suit practical effect. I hope it doesn't come off as too "chunky" like Robocop. The teaser poster image seemed like a good compromise between the comic art and the realities of a practical suit.

11:20:03 PM
I agree that visual decoding of a comic book is a different skill (but not necessarily easier) than reading straight text. I think it's harder for some people. My wife asked me a very good question once: "when you read a comic book, how do you process all the information? Do you look at the picture and then read the words?" I think it is a different skill set. Anyone who thinks that reading a comic is 'easier' than a book has obviously never read something like Promethea. Especially the last issue.

People spend money to make films.

If no one paid to see them then there would be no such thing as film.

Why should the rest of us pay your share.

If you like a film then surely you are insulting the people who made it by not paying for it.

People like you are the reason less risks are taken in hollywood.

You drain the industry of money, causing lots of people in the lower end distribution side of things to lose jobs and money.

Surely we'd all like to just walk into shops and just take things without paying but we don't. And don't say it's not the same just because it is not a physical item.

The effects in Spiderman are fine, they are the best that could be done in the small time given to create them in my opinion. But obviously you are one of these people who know nothing about CGI and think it is an easy process.

As a film fan I feel it is my responsibility to spend some of my hard earned money on the industry I rely on.

As a film fan I want to see a film in a format and enviroment which compliments it. Not with crap sound and picture on my monitor sitting at my desk.

You are an absolute IDIOT.

SPOILERS!!!!

Seriously, taken from the Latino Review script review....

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

I'm not sure if the review was of a real script or not, but if it is, I'm a little worried. For one thing, according to the review, the main villain is not the Mandarin, but Howard Stark...Tony Stark's father...maybe he's a bad guy in the comics, I dunno, but it doesn't sit well with me, too much like Hulk...which I liked by the way, I just don't want to see a rehash of the story with a different superhero. E.G. Spidey films being remakes of the Reeve Superman films.

Also, the review says that the climax involves Iron Man and War Machine fighting each other...aren't Stark and Rhodes supposed to be best friends? I know Stark has fallen out with everyone he knows pretty much over the course of comic book history, but surely it's too early for Stark and Rhodey to be fighting each other...should be in a sequel that focusses more on Stark's drinking.

ANyways, I have a feeling that the script they reviewed may have been fake, or at most an early draft...hope so anyway.

y the way, anyone remember the Iron Man cartoon series from the 80's/90's that had Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch (I think) and Spider-girl (or woman...or something) in it? If there's a sequel to Iron Man...screw the canon, bring in Hawkeye :P

...just kidding! Seriously now, I'll try to play the devil's advocate and show some intelligent bitching. As a long time fan of shellhead, I've been pleased by most of the Favreau's choices so far. But this suit is really annoying me: looks like they're trying sooo hard to pump up the fans with retro designs, but eventually only the script counts. Looks like a G1 TF design: fans are happy on a short sighted view, but I think the gigantic laughter from the non-fans (i.e 95% of the audience) will fuck up our viewing pleasure, ultimately. I don't care about the proto armor: like said John August "sometimes, old stuff sucks" and face it: the first ToS are a little lame by now. I know it sounds like blasphemy, but again I'm a big fan and I only want one armor to kick ass: the Ditko/Granov hybrid, or whatever armor will show up in the second act. I'm starting to wonder if the whole "we're big fans too! Faithful to the source True Believers! Word!" is not another MSJ-ish joke. I still give Fav's the benefit of the doubt of course, but that so many fans are indulgent toward this laughing stock of a design... I hope Downey leaves Kabul real fast.

Very true to the original look, kudos to Favreau (although with Marvel actually being the studio in charge, it damn well ought to be faithful in appearance!). Excellent work Favs, keep it up with the later generations of armour. I had little to no hopes for this movie a year ago but the casting - especially of RDJ - and everything I have seen since has me really excited for it.

It seems that reading too many wonder gimp in the 5th dimension comics has addled your brain also. The point I was making was that jfp2006 said I was a dumbass for saying I liked comic books but had no idea what Iron Man was about. Infact, I did not write that I liked comic books, but rather comic book films. That was why I criticised his reading abilities. It was not meant as a derogatory comment on comic book readers/reading - but since you started that debate I think its rather sad that comic people always have to justify what they are doing. For me, comics are for children and should remain for them. Its like those people who wear Thundercats T-shirts, or buy the whole first series of He-Man on dvd - hey wasn't it great? Well...maybe when I was 9, but I've grown up now. I prefer watching the Wire. And I don't consider myself an intellectual snob, but generally speaking I think it takes more effort to read a book WITHOUT pictures than with - thats why children start with the hungry caterpillar rather than James Joyce.

your arguments and the examples you associate with them are irrelevant: He-man DVDs or Thundercats T-shirts are stuff created out of nostalgia, to cash in on purposedly kiddies TV shows. James Joyce refers to The Count of Monte Cristo in his autobiography but in some countries Dumas is also labeled as kids' litterature... I believe it's intellectually similar to write (and to read - and understand) a Joyce's short story, a French classic 1500 pages novel, ans Alan Moore's Watchmen. Once you read those three, come back here and prove me wrong.

Now, ...let's see them do as well, if not better, on the all important 2nd suit, ...the red and gold. And if they manage to give me goosebumps with the next (all important) trademark IRON-MAN suit, ...well, I'll be floored. Maybe I won't give a damn that I disagree with the casting of Tony Stark, since I won't be able to see RDJ within. Give me some killer effects worthy of the new TRANSFORMERS flick, and I'll have to check this out after all. And again, allow me to say that I don't have an issue against Robert Downey, Jr. I just don't find him to be right for Tony Stark, in my eyes. (I'm an IRON-MAN fan. I care.) But in the end, maybe I'll accept this interpretation after all. If it's a good flick, what can anyone say against it, ...other than (perhaps) "I would've rather seen so-and-so play Tony Strark."

I know who Iron Man is, but I've never read the comics. The group of screenwriters and production people Favreau put together for this film gave me goosebumps, though, and that shot of Stark's first Iron Man suit looks intense. It's got a threatening, don't fuck with me look to it, and the tech isn't polished or silly looking.

This film is creeping nicely onto the scene. Can't wait.

That is so beautiful. Anyone remember that ephisode of Entourage where the guys were opening Aquaman and hoping against all hope that it could beat Spiderman's box office and it didn't seem possible and they couldn't do it but then they did?

Did anyone else have this crazy sense of accomplishment for Vinnie and the guys when that happened? That's the way I'll be following this one... hoping against all hope that someone actually understands the greatest Super Hero of my childhood, tells a story about him that's worth telling, doesn't muck up his charactirization and make him a hippie liberal socialist and that everyone and their moms and grandmas shows up opening day to watch him in action.

That is my dream. Gosh I love that picture.

I just love the suit. Repeating what has been said in earlier posts - it gives me goosebumps. Yes. RDJ casting caught me off-guard, and since I have been a lifelong fan of ol iron britches - although I truly can not stand the newer fascistic IM, and refuse to buy or read them, still I remember when 25 years ago, Tom Selleck would have been the perfect casting. David Michelinie and Bob Layton created the definitive look and personality of the golden avenger. I still pull those late 70's early eighties books out a re-read them. Just classic. IM 128 (if you do not know what that mean, you are not a fan) is the greatest of them all. I just can't wait to see the golden avenger on the big screen. Here's hoping they nail the classic armor too.

I am reserving judgment on RDJ. Not because he is not physically imposing - the armor will take care of that, and he is a tremendous actor who will nail the psychological aspects of the role, but Tony Stark is a handsome, suave, sophicated ladykiller. Taht is also integral to his personality. I will wait and see how RDJ does with that. Could care less about Paltrow. I like Terrence Howard. Truly hate the character Obadiah Stane (a low water mark in the series). Once agin, will reserve judgement until I see finished product. But can nothelp but get excited over the direction it has taken.

Like someone said "waay" before me in the talkback, it looks like they got the grey armor "perfect", and yet people still bitch! I'm telling you, sometimes there's just no pleasing some of you. It seems cooler these days to tear a movie down before it's even given a chance. Favreau and Iron Man could be a great team-up. As successful as Raimi and Spiderman? Who can say? But of course we're talking about two different Marvel characters. One that's universally recognized, and one that's a little less known, though I love both characters. I'm holding out hope for this movie, seems like all the right steps are being taken. But then again, I thought they nailed the look of Ghost Rider, and the flick was "ehhh"..

I don't think a superhero film has ever had such positive feedback. Right from the beginning. People originally hated the thought of Keaton as Batman, Maguire as Spidey and Jackman as Wolvie. But when Downey was announced - it was perfect casting in mosts eyes (maybe only Jean Luc Picard as Xavier was so warmly received) The rest of the iron cast (save maybe Paltrow) has also been heralded as great. Then finally we see the first costume. SPOT ON. My only hope is the final product lives up to what has preceded it. All I can say to favreau is "VERY MONEY BABY!"

I never liked it as a kid. But this past year (actually since the beginning of Invincible Iron Man with Warren Ellis) he's been growing on my slowly--like mold. And as I've been hearing things about this movie I get more and more (slowly) excited. I just saw Zodiac and Downey Jr was GREAT. That scene in his boathome where he just gives up is great. I REALLY wanted him to turn it around, to become the journalist hero. He's a fanTAStic choice and will bring a lot of depth to Iron Man. The man who wears a shell because he's too vulnerable to be there himself. The industrialist who secretly hates himself so he hides behind technology. Wow. I'm getting excited.

I'm writing this before reading the other tb comments, so as to ensure a clear, unfettered train of thought. I saw this on my monitor at work today, but couldn't respond due to the fun police. Having come home and seen it again - I just can't wait to see this movie. It looks to me that they're getting it right. This is exactly the kind of makeshift armor that I'd hope to see if Stark is a POW. The headpiece looks exactly like the original creation, and the glowing chest piece is exactly right. This looks as clunky and practically unmaneuverable as it should. (This is NOT a criticism. I'm a huge fan of Marvel comics and grew up reading them. Over the past couple of years, I've been collecting reprints on the form of the Marvel Essential collections, which are probably my best, most affordable means of reliving childhood memories and re-owing those classics I had as a kid, which an overzealous mother threw away claiming they'd rot my brain. Maybe they did - look where I ended up - here on AICN talkback. Anyhow, that damned woman cost me a freakin' fortune over the years and if she were still alive - I'd sue her. Back to the point, I have several of those Marvel Legends figurines, including the first appearance Iron Man and it didn't really occur to me until I took a good look at it how cumbersome the costume would be in reality - perfectly reflected here.)Okay (breathe, Rob...breathe)now here's hoping they've also got the classic red & gold equally nailed. My fingers are crossed, my hopes are high.

This film will take everyone by surprise. With Jon Favreau directing and the albeit flawed genius Robert Downey in the title role this film looks extremely promising. Iron Man will be up there with all the great comic book movies i.e. anything not directed by either Mark Stephen Johnson, Tim Story or Joel Schumacher...

MechaTruffautMk2, it's COSMPIC POWERS!!1!

Not too long ago in a talkback about Spider-Man or something similar, DHAMAKA2007 was ranting about the superiority of Krrish and the Silver Surfer, and in his all-caps tirade, he made a typo and thus gave the world COSMPIC POWERS. I think superninja thinks I am off my rocker for having found DHAMAKA2007 as funny as I did, but sometimes something just hits you the right way. So that's why it's COSMPIC POWERS, and why it will always be.

"Spidey films being remakes of Superman"

Are you shitting me? Spiderman I and II were faithful adaptions of the Spidey comics. Well, other than organic webshooter (which worked so well in the movie it's been written in the comic continuity) and the dreadful casting of Bucky Dunst as supermodel Mary Jane.

Seriously though, this image looks great. Perfect design, and with Downey Jr. on board as well as Favreau, I think this has great potential to be one of the best superhero films thus far. Alot of it will no doubt rest upon the tone. The Hulk wasnt really a failure because it dared to be thoughtful or audacious it was that it tried to be a big summer, bang things to pieces flick, languid humanist art piece and brooding David Mamet play all in the same movie. I enjoyed it for many of its moments, and those big Hulk sequences were great, but having abstract visuals and endings contemplating ruptured families in the same scene where a big green dude in ripped shorts fights a big mutant poodle in a pine tree is a little scattershot to feel terribly cohesive. In Iron Man, most of the human factor and character shadings are already built into the story, and dont need to be awkwardly shoehorned in.My only question is if the Dragon, Fin-Fang Foom or something(forgive me, its been years since I read Iron Man) will make an appearance in the movie. As cool as Iron Man fighting a dragon would be, only a very specific tone would fit it. And if you achieved that tone, brilliance! Anyone who has seen Zathura knows though that Jon could pull this off.

Let's not forget the weakness of the source material

and the fact that Favreau, while well-liked, has not proven he has much knack for filmmaking. Being that IRON MAN is so, so, so pathetically similar to BATMAN in inspiration... how will unhappy 15-year-olds sweat the inevitable (and Earth-shaking, of course) comparisons to BATMAN BEGINS (which is just about the worst title that any good movie is saddled with)

Just perfect! That's all I can say. If you've read Iron Man, as I did throughout the 80's this is just perfect as Tony's first suit. I wish they were doing the Obadiah Stane arc, with the "Iron Monger" suit vs Iron Man.

Surely you know that Dio REPLACED Ozzy as lead singer of Black Sabbath (in 1979). Dio wasn't a member of Sabbath when 'Iron Man' was written or released (in 1971). I think you mean 'Tony Iommi and Ozzy...'

"Weakness of the source material"? What, in your opinion, is strong source material for a comic book film? Iron Man's origin, the 'Demon in a Bottle' issues, Stark's fall and eventual return - this is classic stuff. And how is Iron Man at all similar to Batman? Because they both inherited money?

Krinkle, dude or dudette, you really need to do some research before setting forth with your thoughts. The late 70's early eighties source material is some of the finest writing and drawing that has ever graced comics. The great Michelinie/Layton team took the Golden Avenger to heights undreamed of. It really should be Justin Hammer, not Obadiah Stane that is the villain, but nevertheless, IM has nothing to do with Batman other than having money. Tony Stark is a fully realized character. Bruce Wayne, has been for the most part, just an alter-ego (although this has gotten better in the past 20 years or so).if the stick to the above mentioned source material, it will be a truly great flick.
I'm looking forward to this

And I NEVER complain when they modernize comic characters. This suit looks lame, but that's because I was expecting so much more considering Stan Winston designed this suit.

...that flame-throwing armored dude in Lethal Weapon 4? Looks the same. I totally agree with warghost. I think modernized designs (if handled correctly) are better to suspend disbelief. And I know my ToS back issues by heart. My concern is not: "the suit looks lame" because it's a brilliant recreation of the original. My concern is: Why did they chose to stick SO close to the original in the first place? Why not create some cool, RELEVANT new design entirely? Does the crowd really screams for steampunk designs? Or G1 Transformers looks?
It's not the metal it's the brains behind it.

The reason it looks like it cost 10 million even though "it's supposed to be made of a few hundred bucks worth of scraps" is that it's not the metal that makes a machine, it's the brains that put it together. The material that makes up your computer and your Ipod has been there all along; nobody knew what to do with them until recently. Just like the keys to all the machines and medicines and cures for global warming et al are right beneath our feet; we just don't know yet what to do with them.

This is a perfect description of what was wrong with The Hulk.
