was that Fearless was the last movie he claimed he was showcasing martial arts at its finest. Now that he's older he's no longer claiming to master the art, but he'll still do plenty of movies because people can't really tell.

I heard fearless (or was it hero) was his last martial arts film. We have no idea what he is doing in this yet...and so what if it isn't? You saying you want to see Jet Li hand in his spurs? Boy, you is crazy!

So he's basically saying "Just watch my old shit, this new stuff is going to be kind of crap because the weather is playing havoc with my arthritis." So this movie will be akin to the martial arts version of Grumpy Old Men.

Not saying that mate, I just hate the attempted manipulation to get bums on seats. But then it wouldn't really bother me all that much if he did quit, he won't be bettering his back catalogue as his age advances, and I was always more of a Sammo fan anyway.

I don't want to hear any of Jet Li's "I want to do serious dramatic roles not martial arts films from now on" Crap. Or Jackie Chan's "I'm going to start using a stunt man" garbage. And no Wire FU either, I'm sick of that shit. And I don't want to hear either one uttering one word in English. Chan or Li in an English speaking role = Instant suckage.

Yeah that sucks when that happens, and then Hollywood always screws with the excellent asian stars and directors, watering down their work to pallid imitations of what they once were. I offer you Chow Yun Fat and John Woo as two further examples.
The ads construed what Jet Li said about 'Fearless'...
by -=Shin=-
Apr 11th, 2007
01:00:33 AM
Jet Li said it would be his "last martial arts epic." In the context of the quote though, he was referring to 'Fearless' in the since of it being his last period martial arts epic film like his many 'Once Upon A Time In China' films where he played folk hero Wong Fei Hung. he never said he'd stop doing action/martial arts films. The studio just ran with the quote and construed it so we'd all go see it as his last film. It was a major disservice to him. He's still going to do action films with martial arts.

Two martial art studs...ten years past anything resembling their prime...but they still got it. Both are talented at their craft and the experience of both their years should make an interesting movie. The problem I have is this: Jackie Chan is a comedy guy. Jet Li is Mr. Intense. Is this going to be a buddy movie, or the martial arts version of the Odd Couple?

Its gonna .... ah who the fuck am i kidding? This shit aint good enough ! The only way li and chan should have teamed up was in a early 90s big budget stunt and fight filled hong kong action film directed by yune wo ping with a running time of 3 fucking hours ! You know, come to think of it , why didnt golden harvest do a team up movie with these stars back in early 90s when the hong kong film industry was at its peak ? Im pretty sure if it happened the movie would have been the highest grossing HK film at the time. Any way back to reality- this film will be shit.

What Li meant was that he was ding no more Hero/Fearless type films, no more Fist of Legend type films. Basically, no more movies about ancient China with large kung fu setpieces and fights....so expect more Cradle/Romeo/The One etc films from him as well as Kiss of the Dragon type films in the future.

By the way, wasn't Jet Li supposed to be playing Seraph in the Matrix sequels? What happened there? I know he was talking about it with Joel Silver, but obviously he didn't play any role in Reloaded or Revolutions. Did he pull out of the project or something?

Jet's last martial art film
by longevitymonk
Apr 12th, 2007
01:20:54 PM
To promote the movie Fearless the studio said it would be Jet's last martial arts epic...later Jet(in a interview) said what he said was taken out of context. He went on to clarify that he meant it would be the last movie in which he plays a legendary chinese hero (like wong fei hung) in a martial arts epic. He has allready completed his new film Warlords, It's a heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and political upheaval. It is based on "The Assassination of Ma," a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) story about the killing of general Ma Xinyi. Ma will be played by Jet Li. Siu-Tung Ching the action director for Curse of The Golden Flower is doing fight choreography. Now this sounds like a kung fu epic..with Jet playing the legendary lead character...so I think the marketing people for Fearless just twisted Jet's comment to get butts in the seats, and its likely Jet was under pressure to not dispute those comments, doing so would make the studio look like big fat liars just out to make a buck. So...Jet said he wouldn't play another legendary chinese hero...well you dont get more legendary or chinese with the monkey king and longevity monk. The marketing said Fearless would be his last martial arts movie.... Jet's next 3 movies: Warlords, War (rogue), and The Forbidden Kingdom are all martial arts movies starring Jet Li. I also have to mention Michelle Yeoh is possibly co-starring in the mummy 3, which indicates that the mummy 3 will also be a martial arts action movie. Guess what...the people behind the marketing for your favorite movies are totally full of shit!

The one Jackie Chan movie to see...
by MechaTruffautMk2
Apr 12th, 2007
02:36:37 PM
...is hard to say, since he's made so many modern-set action movies with minor kung fu action/mostly stunts, and so many old school kung fu films with that old school kung fu flavor (Simon Yuen WHAT!). So, to cheat a bit, I'd pick Police Story for the former, and Drunken Master for the latter, as the most iconic movies he made in each genre. I can't think of any good American movies he's made, but most of his Hong Kong stuff, especially when he teams up with SUPER DRAGON BROTHERS Sammo Hung (see his shit: Eastern Condors and Millionaire's Express) and Yuen Biao (see his shit: he's in both of the Hung films mentioned, but also check out On the Run and Righting Wrongs) in stuff like Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever that you get not only insane stunts and awesome kung fu action (none of the "almost" kung fu he uses in his American stuff) courtesy of Sammo Hung direction, but also the patented 80s Hong Kong attitude that mixes extreme melodrama with what-the-fuck slapstick comedy with action cinema entertainment (and always, ALWAYS, in every one of those fucking movies, is there scene where the resident hottie gets out of the shower and every male member of the cast somehow oogles from a hidden space). So Chan is great, trust me, American movies just don't have the same off-the-wall style that HK cinema used to be about, and which Chan flourished in for so many years. Case in point, in his American movies with HK stars, there's always a great focus on Chan's character, or the character of any other Asian martial arts actor, like, say, Jet Li, specifically being a martial arts master, but in most of these HK movies the characters, whether they be thieves, cops, assassins, superheroes, or whatever, just start doing kung fu out of nowhere and it's taken for granted that, hey, it's kung fu time up in here. Now, all that being said, it's a real shame Li and Chan couldn't have teamed up in a HK flick in the 80s or early 90s; it's not such a big deal that there's a kid involved, though it is, of course, awful - what I mean by that contradiction is that an HK movie made back in the heydey would have found a way to make the movie hilarious, awesome, bad-ass and great (and by great I mean *totally sweet*) even with the kid, because their filmmaking was just so insane, while an American movie, or, we must admit, a HK movie made now in its pretty lame current industry, will boringly have to explain every last fucking thing to the little twerp instead of having gobs of insane shit happening every ten seconds. Well...at least we have Chinese Odyssey with Stephen Chow for some true Monkey King madness. Go see that, and weep for what could have been.
