Return of the Cashflow. I like Star Wars(even the prequels), but it needs another 10+ years of cooling off before it should be brought back, and it isn't the type of franchise that needs to go in so many random directions at once. I wish Lucas had the courage to do the things he says he wants to do, rather than delegate this stuff out and then realize its his baby and he needs to get more involved and then realizes he has no time left to do those little projects he keeps talking about. I would rather see Lucas bravely fuck up something new and get shit on by critics than do a pretty good Star Wars/Indiana Jones anything...and still get shit on by critics.

...when GL mentioned the old serial-type movies, they were usually double (or more) features. Grindhouse almost has that feel (Think GL will be a bit jealous when he sees it? Inspired, perhaps?). I'm surprised that Lucas didn't attempt that direction at some time. Kinda like the 'berg's Amazing Stories, or Tales from the Crypt, or The Twilight Zone movie, etc. I'd give my $10+ if there was a Lucas/Spielberg movie at the theatre, made as a double feature. I'll have to settle for Indy IV, I guess. Helluva life this is.

...I still can't think of any movie series like this. From Jeid on (or back, or whatever), there is such horrible character work (Jar Jar, Amidala, baby Anakin, non-baby Anakin) and overwrought plotting, stupid dialogue... But the whole concept is just so damned great that I think I watch it as much for what it could have been. And yet it would not even exist without Lucas, who should have had the whole damned thing written, with great screenwriters, before he even went forward with the prequels. Then he could work out the bugs in the scripts before proceeding to work. I mean, I hope those who wanted to see where C3PO came from, or Darth Vader's turn to the dark side are happy, you got all that and more and basically all the moments we were "looking forward to" sucked, leaving us with some great visuals, Ewan McGregor, a few of John Williams' music cues, and very little else. BUT...I keep watching these movies, and so do you. Because there's nothing else like them. (I am wondering about the comment in the intro about the possibility of ANOTHER movie series--where is this coming from? Any info appreciated.)

In HD on my huge 1080p LCD TV. While many people hate the films now, I think they still rock. Call me an apologist but what someone said above is damn right. There's no other movies like this with the mythology and the technology perfectly blended. The fight between good and evil, father and son and an empire. Sure Lucas isn't the best director in terms of actors but his visual eye is second to none. To me, these are the greatest movies ever created. The lightsaber is the greatest special effect in existence. If you don't want one there's something wrong with you. No other movie property, fantasy, or sci fi franchise even comes close. There's only one return and it ain't of the king, it's of the Jedi. Indeed.

I heard one is sort of a Seinfeld knockoff, featuring R2D2 as the main character. The 30 minute sitcom is sandwiched between two 10-minute long comedic monologues of R2's whistles and beeps, with looped shots of the Cantina audience laughing. C3PO is of course the "Kramer" character, except with the trademark C3PO Prissy Whine™. "George" will be played by none other than the Gonk droid. The token female will be played by some new ILM CGed robot, loosely based on Rosey from The Jetsons. (I know someone who works at Skywalker Ranch, and they sent me a copy of the script.)

the First Rule Of Star Wars is followed. The FROSW, as we like to call it contains the following instructions: George Lucas must never be involved with the creative aspect of the project. This great rule goes in line with the newly revised Principles Of TV Series, where article 4 clearly states that: If a live action Staw Wars tv show ever sees the light of day, it must be shown on HBO and the plot written by HBO script writers. Also, we must not forget the seventh principle: No funny %$&#$# droids or aliens. If the FROSW rule is broken or any deviation from the principles occur everything about the tv show will suck, i'm certain of this because i have consulted with the higher priests.

I liked the prequels. LOVED episode III, dug episode II, and consider episode I the necessary exposition to make everything else make sense. Lucas wanted Star Wars to be like the old Flash Gordon serials, and if you've never seen those, yes, they were fucking hokey as hell, but fun. If you don't get that about Star Wars, and expect it to be "badass" or somehow conform to your gritty notions, then you MISSED THE POINT ENTIRELY. If anything in the Star Wars universe sucks, it's those shitty Dark Horse comics that take the fun and humor of Star Wars and trade them for plot after plot about how badass the Sith were, and other "money shot, trying to be cool" moments. How I loathe people who expect the movies to be all dark and gritty like the worst of the Dark Horse comics. Go watch Firefly or something if you don't like what Lucas is doing with Star Wars. I, for one, can't wait to see what they do with the two TV shows.

I made my peace. I have the prequels on dvd, and they look cool next to the orginial trilogy dvds, but I'll rarely watch them, I think. There are parts in each of them that I really love, and I like ep 3, for the most part. But none of them feel magical to me the way the eps 4-6 do. I haven't seen the animated series that already aired, but intend to. And I will watch these new series, because I love Star Wars. But I like most Star Trek more than eps 1-3. And I love Firefly. I'm so pissed that there may not be anymore. But I love Star Wars too. See, peace. I'm at peace with it..... but fuck George Lucas for all the merchandise! Bwah!

With all due respect, RW, I don't keep watching these movies. I saw the original film about five times, about the same for Empire, and only saw Jedi once. Those last three pieces of shit, I watched once. The last two I waited for the DVDs. Then I borrowed them. I don't watch them anymore because of what they could have been, but weren't. Spiffy special effects are worth nothing in my book if they're supporting sophmoric writing that pretends to be otherwise. Sorry to be such a fucker about it. So I would really like the TV show (if it's live action) to live up to the promise never achieved by the movies. In other words, Lucas better not write it. The Professor has said enough, and apologizes if he has offended anybody.

...when he said that some directors can take mediocre actors and get great performances out of them, while Lucas takes great actors and makes them look mediocre. Lucas did a good job casting the prequels. The most criticized prequel actors -- Christensen and Portman -- had the hardest job of all, trying to breathe life into a romance written and directed by Lucas! I was always surprised at how some would call Lucas the ultimate hack, and then cut Portman and Christensen no slack at all, when again, their job was the hardest. They needed the most from Lucas, yet got the least from him. McGregor, Jackson, and McDiarmid all had much easier tasks. In the end, I did enjoy the prequels, but it is a shame that Lucas didn't do with them what he did with "Empire Strikes Back" and let better writers write the scripts and better directors direct the actors. They could have been so great. Back in 1999 I would never have believed that the prequels would end up being overshadowed by Lord of the Rings.

Ah yes! The ever-continuing great Lucas debate! I've gone back and forth on these discussions, as well. Suffice it to say, I was like everybody else who wanted the prequels. I knew that Lucas could never satisfy fans who had over 20 years of their own thoughts about "what happened before the originals", not to mention the novels, and other material that revived Star Wars in the early 90's. I'm sure I'll be seen as somewhat of an apologist, but I'll trudge on. First of all, it was my hope that the prequel movies would top my least favorite of the OT, Return of the Jedi. Needless to say, none of the PT films accomplished that task. Sure, Darth Maul, cool saber fights, and clone troops are better than the Ewoks. But, that's not a fair comparison. Problems with EP 1...JAR JAR 2.Lucas wrote and directed(love ya baby, but it just wasn't your bag), 3. Script and acting(go back to 2) Neeson, McDiarmid, and the sorely underused McGregor were fine, if not a little dry. Watto cg and voice acting made for a great character. Hell, even Jar Jar had some life in him, but was hokey, cheesy, and annoying. Portman was just as dreadful, or worse than Lloyd. 4. (A nitpicky point)When you cast Brian Blessed(Prince Vultan from Flash Gordon) to be in your film, you don't use him to voice act a mediocre alien character, you use that fine British actor to bring life to your film. 5. Midichlorians-nuff said. 6. Anakin should have been older, and the slave's life should have been a bit more realistic. 7. Less about cg, and Amidala costume changes 8. More Maul, and have Obi-Wan accompany Qui-Gon to Mos Espa instead of Jar-Jar. There's a thought. I'm sure there's more problems, but let's move on Episode II-1. G.L. scripts and directs-especially the really god awful love scenes 2.SHort of the British cast, most other actors suffer from poor direction and script, 3.(Nitpick) Too much Yoda backwards speak. Watch Empire, and you'll see what I mean 4. Dismal Threepio humor-then again his old jokes in 4 and 5 wouldn't be well received today. 5. Much of Anakin's turn to the dark side was mishandled. EP 3-1. Lucas writes and directs again 2. Dismal Portman-Christensen love scenes 3. Anakin's mostly unbelievable fall to the dark side, particularly the killing of youngling's so early on in his Sithly career 4. Chewie directly interacting with Yoda (can you say Kirk meets Picard) 5.Awww. Who the Hell cares? There was some good, some bad. I probably liked EP 3 better than the other two PT movies. Still paled in comparison to ROTJ(which was the beginning of Lucas' downward spiral). The prequels fell short, although there are things I liked...Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Maul, Palpatine, Yoda, Watto, Dex, the Pod Race, most of the saber fights, etc. But let's face it, tv programs such as Farscape, Firefly, and Battlestar have raised the bar, and Lucas got left behind. The tv show may be a chance to redeem himself. Fingers crossed with his writing and directing of the first 13(?) episodes. I'm sure Ewoks and Gungans are not on the menu at least. Only time will tell. THe involvement of others in the writing, and directing will probably make it palatable. But, it's time for Star Wars to be more than just palatable, what with the advent of other aforementioned programs. Just my thoughts. I'm sure that makes me an apologist f*cktard. Even though, I'd be the first to tell you that the Spider films, and the LOTR trilogy were far better than the preqels.

The reason I said some might see me as an apologist, is because it takes very little to be called one. For some people, all you have to do is say anything positive about the PT, and you're essentially labeled an apologist. As for Lucas bashing, I'm not really in that camp. Sure, he screwed some things up, but he's like anybody else. They lose some of their creative spark. For example, Elton John's 1970's music(with a few exceptions) is considered to be the best of his career. When you talk to older fans about the Lion King music, and later albums, they tend to be critical. Not apologizing for Lucas or Elton John, but every dog will have their day...be it music, movies, or whatever. As for Lucas being a money-grubbing tyrant, who knows? What would anyone else do in shoes? Continue to put out action figures, soundtracks, etc? If 20th Century, or some other outfit owned the rights to SW, you can bet your ass they would market it to death. And, it's just as likely that they might have f*cked things up. And, as far as the man himself, it seems to me that he distances himself(somewhat) from Hollywood, and appears to be a loving father to his adopted kids. I certainly have no desire to make jokes about his neck, or his kids. But enough of my rambling. Here's hoping GL and Steve can make something out of Indy 4.

I think the big thing everyone misses about the PT compared to the OT is replay value. I actually liked every PT movie opening night in 99, 02, 05, but for many reasons, they don't hold any replay value the same way the OT did, although ROTS has OK replay value cause that is most of the plot points we waited for. The PT doesn't have the characters you care about in the OT, the story isn't as fun as the OT, the movies don't have that on-your-seat edge that the OT does, and frankly, the movies don't compare in quality terms with ANH & ESB as they are truly classic movies of their genre, IMO. I always try to watch the saga 1-6 now cause of my love of SW more then anything else, but it seems like I am going through the motions to get to last hour of ROTS, let alone Episode IV. I watch the OT a zillion times cause I love the movies, and I try to watch the PT cause I feel it completes the story, yet I have only done a 1-6 marathon, over a few weekends, once, and it just aint the same as watching 4-6 like I did for 20 years.
