The first one was ok. but jeez enough with the wink wink, nudge, nudge , aren't we clever. I just want to slap everyone involved. In ocean's 15 clooney pretends to be danny ocean who meets the real danny ocean, and the wolrd promptly collapses on itself.

If they can successfully go back to the super-slick fun of the original, I'd love to see this one.

Ocean's 12, however, was garbage the likes of which you rarely see. A smug, self-satisfied, deeply unpleasant film that made everyone involved look as though they spent the entire duration sucking up the stink of their own and each others' farts.

I loved both "11" and "12". Not that they're the greatest thing ever, or I'd own them on DVD, but they were fun as a matinee with popcorn and sodey.

Looking forward to seeing this. The bit where Clooney rolls his eyes actually made me laugh out loud.

...are nothing more than the glorified home movies of famous actors vacationing in exotic locations which said actors then decided, in a great act of magnanimity, to share with us, the unwashed masses. All the effort here is in these guys having fun, rather than the little things that may matter to those paying to watch i.e., story, script, etc. I hate these movies. I feel better now. Thank you.

Loved the first one, the second one not so much...this looks like the first one. To rip these movies for being in-jokey and too much "actors having fun" is like ripping Sgaquille O'Neal for dunking too much. I like movies and I like movie stars - yeah sometimes I like an indie blandfest to come out of nowehere and impress me, but there's a place for this kind of stuff too ..........if done well. This looks like it's done well. I'm there.

really never saw many heist movies from the 70's...the first one was a reboot of old 50's and 60's films, the second one was a reboot of like french connection 70's type movies...I think most people just bitch about it because they hear other people bitching about it. I can't imagine you went into Ocean's 12 with any expectations that that film didn't meet. if you did, it's your dumb fault, not the movie. it was fun. if you want to pick on it to be cool, fine. but it's enough already.

I actually felt like they ran out of ideas half-way through the movie. The object they were stealing was vauge and the super-hologram thing was ridiculous. The moment they used some fancy technology hologram that was THAT unbelievable really took away the sense of fun and ideas it could have had. Plus half the characters weren't in the movie, and the ones that were sat in jail the whole movie. Then the Julia Roberts posing as Julia Roberts scene felt like some cheesy sitcom pratfall. If it was based solely on character interaction and the comedy and chemistry everyone had I would have liked it more. Hope this new one has a better worked out story.

If Ocean's 12 had been half as cool as the trailer it would have been a fine movie. As it was, it was the worst movie of that year. Utterly incompetent trash. And, no, I'm not just saying that because it's "cool" to bash Ocean's 12. I'm saying it because it failed on all counts. So right back at ya: I don't think it's possible someone could genuinely find Ocean 12 worthy of any kind of praise; therefore anyone praising it must just get a kick out of being contrarian.

No... not really, I just had do that...

In all truthfulness, 12 just wasn't nearly as good as 11; and it's no wonder so many people don't like it...

13 on the other hand shows some promise trailer-wise; but there's a chance it will be as disapponiting as 12 was. However, it also looks like it just might be a return to 11's form... It'll be worth a matinee admission to find out.

Kinda like Babe: Pig In The City. I'm not saying 12 was as great as 11 (maybe my favorite film of 2001), but all this "worst movie of 2004" talk is absolute bullcrap. Yeah, I could have done without the whole "Julia Roberts as Julia Roberts" thing and the holographs, but it was stylish and admirable for doing something wildly different from the original.

The reason people hate on 12...
by Captain Katanga
Mar 30th, 2007
01:39:36 PM
... is because by any reasonable standard it is a very poor film. It doesn't remotely matter what kind of films from the 70s it may or may not have been emulating: it was just bad. Holograms and the whole Julia Roberts thing are just the icing on the cake of a script that's poor from start to finish. It may not be the worst film of that year, but the reason people hate it so much is that it comes across as unbearably smug: A bunch of glamourous actors, no doubt having a great time on location, but missing one crucial thing: a decent script. Rather like the original rat pack version of Oceans 11. Brad Pitt and Matt Damon are not naturally funny people, putting them in a sharp suit and getting them to mug for the camera does not a good film make. It's not good enough, they are talented guys, and everyone had a right to expect a lot more.

"by any reasonable standard it is a very poor film"? reasonable? according to whom?? i enjoyed 12 for all the same reasons as i enjoyed 11: it was funny, sharp, entertaining and visually stylish. in fact, i probably enjoyed 12 more because (i) it took itself even less seriously than 11; and (2) it had catherine zeta jones in it. i'll admit that, plotwise, it was weaker than 11 but frankly who cares about the plot for these things? i get the strange impression that folk who liked 11 but hated 12 have too much invested in these films: you're meant to enjoy them, not engage with them at an intellectual level ... oh well, the trailer for 13 looks sound.

Don't wheel out the old film snob argument, the LAST thing I'm suggesting is that I want to "engage with it at an intellectual level"... light entertainment can either be done well, or badly, and most people seem to agree that the former applies to 11, and the latter applies to 12. I'm glad you enjoyed it, many didn't. The old "who cares about the plot, it's just entertainment, not meant to be intellectual" argument could also be used by fans of Norbit to suggest that the rest of us are snobs that expect too much. Incidently, when it comes to a HEIST film, plot is very important if you ask me. I do agree that 12 was stylish, but that's about it.

Then they go and make movies they care about, that barely break even if they ever do. 11 bankrolled Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Solaris. 12 Bankrolled Goodnight and Good Luck and Bubble. 13 will get us the Che movies. The only part that dragged it down was the brief act with Julia playing Julia.. And it wasn't that it was out of place or badly done, but it completely threw off the movie's pacing. Everything else about it was fantastic.. The smart script, the plot twists and especially the sound track.. THAT was fantastic.

I didn't say the film was meant to emulate french connection type movies (or be as dark...I can't believe you actually thought I Was making that comparison) I jsut meant that it is as much of a sendup of those film as the first one was of the 50's movies. these films are like parodies of the films I mentioned, but not real parodies. they're just sort of a jokey, silly version of them. is Amy Winehouse on par with Ella Fitzgerald? no. but she's a modern, less impactful, more irreverant version of the same (sort of) genre. that's what I'm getting at.

I just don't think it was a departure from the first one AT ALL...it was set in europe instead of vegas. it was brad pitt wooing the girl with his thief prowess instead of clooney. matt damon looking for playing time. the malloy brothers making fun of eachother and fighting. shaobo xing is small and fits in small places, the heist is absurdly complicated and unrealistic, yet playfully so. IT'S ALL THERE! I ask again, what on earth did people expect when they sat their asses down in the seats?

I was expecting a very similar movie to 11 but set in Europe. I was expecting pretty much everything you said in your post. What I got was a disjointed mess. Maybe I need to watch it again (although once was difficult enough) but it all seemed so very pointless. The first film was clever, everything they were doing was shown to us and if you were smart enough to see how the plan all fit, fine, if not they showed you how it was done, in a stylish manner. In the second film, key sequences were not revealed until the end - the first time we saw the action was in the recap (most notably the staged fight on the train to steal the knapsack). Also, others have said it before, pacing was a problem in 12. It went on too long. And most of the cast, who made 11 so much fun, was sidelined throughout most of the movie. 13 looks like it could be as enjoyable as 11, especially with Pacino as the scene-chewing villain.

doesn't bother me. I'm not angered/annoyed if I Can't figure out a movie til the end. even if it's impossible to figure it out til the end. the plots in the oceans movies are really just providing a reason for all the characters to interact in a fun way. as I said, I really can't quite understand how people were so disappointed in the film. you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think most people that complained about it wouldn't have been happy unless the film was a word for word rehash of the first one, just with a few shots of amsterdam and paris. the fact that it kept the same formula and twisted it a little and that bothered so many people is beyond me.

a second chance. Or at least have a more recent frame of reference since it's been a couple of years. But from what I remember it was all subterfuge with no real payoff. The first film was much like a murder mystery: all the clues were there but it takes a master detective to show you at the end how all the pieces fit together. Ocean's 12 was like a murder mystery where the murderer turns out to be a character introduced only in the final 10 minutes (and the victim isn't really dead after all). But, yeah, 13 looks like fun and my displeasure with 12 won't keep me from seeing it.

I'm only including films that stood some chance of not being completely terrible. Ones I'd actually consider watching. If I was going to include every movie made that year, "worst film of 2004" would be completely meaningless, because there's always so much hopeless dreck out there. I checked a list of releases for 2004 and I stand by my assertion. Not that anybody cares...

style of O-11, which can only be promising. O-12 really was self-indulgent, convoluted and surprisingly boring. What's the point in bringing back all the characters from the first one if the plot has no idea what to DO with them? O-11 is a great movie, and I'm hoping Soderbergh just dances with the girl that brung him, so to speak.
