That was actually decent looking. A tough book to adapt...the movie will totally hinge on the little girl. There are some pretty emotial scenes from the book that will be key to the film. I hope its good.

this looks fun. but they really should release a real trailer before the self-blowjob one. "a movie unlike any other movie ever made, in that it is better than anything you've ever experiences, even better than that time you met Salma Hayek in mexico and she was a little drunk and you made out for a bit and told your friends you slept with her, yes, it's even better than that, and it's even better than it would have been if she actually HAD slept with you, yes THE GOLDEN COMPASS is the best thing ever to happen in reality, EVER...opens December 7th..."

This has suddenly gone a lot higher up the must-see scaled. Loved the polar bear charging. Looks like they might just do it right. And th Daemons looked very good too. That was the bit I was most worried about, but it looks like they might have nailed it as well. Time to put the second into prep. That one could be even better if done right.

I don't know. It looks sort of like they ripped off Narnia for the visuals, and then changed the entire plot from the book. Could be decent I suppose. Nicole Kidman is a really boring choice for the villain.

I really hope that the powers that be will quickly stop this new trend of making trailers for films, the making of vignettes. This film seems to want to tell a story of high imagination and childlike wonder yet they make a trailer that cuts the legs off the imagination of filmmaking out from under it. Do the children who go to see this film need to be allowed to look behind the curtain and reminded of green screen composits while watching the evil witch fly around casting computer generated spells. seriously you only get one chace at a first impression. I never once considered the mat paintings in the background or the animatronic puppets when I watched the "Dark Cystal" or the "Neverending Story" for the first time as a tike. I guess they're just trying to beat net-geek sites like this one to punch of letting the magic illusionist cat out of the bag. i hope they take that trailer down and save it for the DVD. Because after the dust settles i do want to know how the magic works but not till after i've had a chace to digest the raw story and images. Moriarty don't you think they should have held that material for the DVD? + I'm posting this kind of talk on the wrong website huh?

I think a Sizzle reel is NOT a regular trailer and is not meant as such, but rather something they put together to help sell the film to people who need to put in theaters - like distributors etc. these are people who can't afford to wait until 'real' trailers come out and have to determin the possible value of a film beforehand. And not every film is a sure thing like 'Star Wars' or 'Lord of the Rings' that they will book into theaters unseen. So please relax: this is indeed not meant to destroy the magic of the film.

I am not impressed with the choice of Nicole Kidman AT ALL!! She is far too young and dull. But it looks like the got Lorek (sp??) right, but I am not sure whether I think the tone is right..it seems they are going the kid-friendly route. This may mean they have chosen to emit the religous backbone and if they have done that, than this will be dreadful and no one will understand what made the stroy so great. The daemon's look pretty cool though.

Why when movies like the Passion, Children of Men, or Narnia get made do the majority of talk backers ask that the religious message be marginalized, but when a movie like the Golden Compass is in production do they ask that the anti-tolerant hateful anti-religious message be left in? What’s the rationalization for the double standard again?

oh hush up...no one ever said that the religious messages in Passion, children of men (not even sure where you got this from) or Narnia should be removed. And why do you think His Dark Materials should have to lose it's message? It preaches nothing of intolerence...but to think for yourself, to fight dictatorships, to always question and to help make this Earth a better place..........YEAH REAL FUCKING INTOLERENCE THERE!!! And the fact that your post contradicts yourself, I really wonder whether you know what double standard means.

that may be so, but I sitll think it should be released later than the actual trailer. if this is all people (normal people) have to go on, the movie won't be judged on its merits as a film, but more as a technological production.

also, I had no idea the movie was anti-religion, I'm definitely seeing it now.

I said it looked like they ripped off Narnia's visuals...not the story. Obviously since Golden Compass is awesome anti-religious pro free choice writing, whereas Narnia was a fantasy story with strong Christian overtones. I am very worried, however, that they have changed the Golden Compass story to make the movies. I still hate the Nicole Kidman casting as much as I think Daniel Craig and Eva Green are good choices.

The look of Narnia fit with my impression of the books, kind of silly and cartoonish, I'm hoping that what we've seen here, especially the daemons, gets a little grittier and less disney by the final edit. The whole story, (despite the obvious 'kid-friendly' suface details) feels a lot more like an old-fashioned Dickens tale, or Brothers Grimm (not the Matt Damon/ Heath Leger abortion) or something. I hope this isn't lost.

Man, even I'm surprised how right I was with my last post- stvnhthr chimed in like, 20 minutes later. I really hope they haven't cut the balls off the MAIN POINT of the story. It seems like folks like stvnhthr, (asuming he's actually read the books) think it must be 'anti-religious' because it's got gay angels and witches in it. Oh yeah, and they kind of kill God, too, sort of, even though it's not really God, but more of a usurper of heaven's throne (like Lucifer) or something, I forget, it's just a kids book for shit's sake anyway.

You'll hear arguments like this one, but if you read the book, you'll realize (hopefully) that it's actually a really positive pro-spirituality kind of story, with high-minded ideas and philosophical theories distilled into kid-language.

It always seems like the people with no sense of humor are the first to cry 'foul' when they feel like their religion is threatened. Calm down, don't go see the movie if you feel that strongly. I saw the Passion and I really, really wish I hadn't. That movie was about as pro-Christian as Edward Penishands.

The series is not anti-christian. It is anti-organized religion. If you read the book carefully you will notice first that there are good christians in it, but they are weak in the face of the all powerful church. Christianiy is chosen because it is the strongest influence in the western world. If christianity is wrong in the books so is every other religion that doesn't follow the books own view of god and creation. Hindu, Islam, Tao, even "our world's" version of wicca. The books are very gnostic.

What these guys are probably going to have the biggest problem with is finding a way to change the ending so it's "happier" in a "love story" kind of way (not wanting to spoil it entirely, but there you go). So, this is what they made instead of Halo? How utterly depressing. If they want to make fantasy, at least they should respect the source material. Instead we get this christmas, fairy, flying bear witch kiddie nonsense. I swear, 20 years from now, when fan movies start being a viable economical endeavour, with state of the art PC graphics and greenscreen being massively available, then finally Hollywood is gonna have to grow some balls and make better movies in order to be competitive. Until then, this is the manner of rectal raping we will have to endure.

we all knew it will be changed for box office sake, but why make the adaptation in the first place if they are willing to emit the heart of the book (anti-organised religion agenda)? You might as well make Harry Potter without the magic. I dread when this movie is released because I am 99% sure it will be accustomed by a Bill O'Reilly report on how dangerous and liberal the movie is...this than will spread all over middle America and boycots will be staged.

Is it really that obvious? I guess I do need a monosyllabic explanation, because I still don't see the connection. Is "Porky Pig: Muslim" a Youtube cartoon or something? A thousand pardons, but without some context (any context, at all) I'm still not getting it. I do know that pork is forbidden for muslims, and though you might find it hard to believe, I do know that pork comes from pigs, and yes, I am also aware that Porky Pig is a stylized charicature of a pig, but these connecting dots don't form a clear picture for me. I guess I don't belong on this talkback, since I'm obviously sorely lacking in either the basic intellectual faculties and/or the relevant, up-to-the-minute pop culture references necessary for membership. We were so young then. I miss those bygone days, when the talkback was new, and the sky was... what color was it?

You don't believe that I'm a conservative because we're arguing. That's brilliant, Fish. I'm more of a conservative than our present government of authoritarian assholes, I can tell you that much.

Mark Twain said: "Loyalty to your country always, loyalty to your government when they deserve it." And Thomas Paine, one of the guys who came up with the idea of America, said: "He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from opposition; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach himself."

I guess that makes these guys flag burning hippies, eh?

I've read the Narnia books several times, and although I'm an athiest and the books can be a bit preachy, I still enjoy them because the stores are pretty well done for the most part. The Dark Materials books start off great...the first two are pretty riveting stuff, but then by the third it is nothing BUT preachy and the whole thing falls apart with the trip to the underwold which drags on, and then the final battle which seems rushed. The final tying up of the loose ends is pretty poorly done and the whole thing left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I really wanted to like the series too, so it was a bit of a letdown after all was said and done. Still, at least it wasn't a crapfest total waste of time like Eragon. Ugh...

This one has everything to make it a nice fantasy movie that's easy to sell to the masses, as well as having the great story and messages interwoven. But the sequels are the works of a bitter and angry man who decided 'hey, I don't know how I'm gonna end this story so I'll just spout a load of bullshit and hope it sticks together'. OK, the second book (The Subtle Knife) contains SOME good moments and does have some story at least, but the third (The Amber Spyglass), if you haven't read it, let's say it would be like if JK Rowling decided to take more drugs than anyone else in the world ever has and put copious amounts of bullshit in the last Harry Potter like armies of angels fighting against an evil cunt who's taken God's place and a race of creatures shaped like ant-eaters but with wheels for legs and giant swans who are their enemies, not to mention that the key to stabalising the universe is, apparently, Lyra (that's the 12-year-old girl) becoming a sort of Eve figure and deflowering herself, thus the kind of prophecy is fulfilled and everything can go back to normal, the end. Seriously, Pullman pulled the third book out of his ass, it's like the works of a madman and will have to be changed a LOT if it ever makes it to the screen.

if you're still reading this, you sir, are a doofus. did you not get that we were making fun of the lack of any sort of logic in your post, and not answering on purpose?

I'm reminded of playing 20 questions with my toddler sister on a long car ride as a kid. her first question was, "is it bigger than a breadbox?" I answered yes, and her next question was, "is it smarter than a breadbox?" it was clear she did not get the concept, she was only 3, after all.

you might be older, but it's clear you don't get the concept either.

the book is anti-tolerance, hateful, and anti-religion...and, as I said, too long and too short, right? sigh...the book is all about tolerance, individuality and thinking for one's self. if your religion preaches against that, that's a shame. if you like those things, and it's part of your faith, great, what's the problem. Pullman writes about the opressiveness of dogmatic christianity, not faith itself. but anyway, I may have gone over your head here. you seem to just want one, simple answer. so here it is: 4.

"What these guys are probably going to have the biggest problem with is finding a way to change the ending so it's "happier" in a "love story" kind of way (not wanting to spoil it entirely, but there you go). Producers are 99% more concerned that you end a film with a kiss than giving you a satisfactory story." Never mind, the season two finale of Doctor Who ripped off the ending from His Dark Materials - so it's out there in some form...
Hmmm.

Eeek. I dunno... I loved the books, a lot. But this first look just didn't excite me, visually. Ok, so the effects aren't finished, but even so, there was nothing in the look that looked either like a) something we haven't seen before in recent fantasy films or b) something that looked just like I imagined it when reading the books. And notice how they only show you one VO line of Dakota's performance? And that even that sounds annoying as hell? I'm getting a bit of a forboding feeling here...

Just seen the trailer and i dont wanna c this film. Looks like a poor man's narnia or lord of my rings. i'm not hating, its just my opinion. the polar bear with the brat shit looked good tho. what the fuck is this anyway? Everyone jumping on the narnia bandwagon and making cheap knock offs. Golden compass? golden compass, my arse, more like golden crapped arse. never heard of it, and neither has anyone on my estate. this is the same Chris Weitz who did "about a boy", right? or am i wrong. this is gonna suck like camels testicles dangling from my mamas forehead, and she screaming "yo! what the fuck did i do last night?" sorry, if i've upset any dark materials fans out there. but this smells like my old man's upper lip after he licked out some camberwell hooker's ass after she had a vindaloo.

it just doesn't seem gritty enough for me. one reason i love the books is the curious realism inherent in the imaginary world - the muddy docks, the ragged witches, the old stone buildings, the musty library. this looks very expansive and glorious. is there something about children's adaptations that necessitates this sort of shiny bland epic quality? not only in the visuals but in the directing? and i'm not talking about the temp visuals, i'm talking about the overall vibeage.

How about burning witches, heretics and homosexuals? Banning books and silencing scientists? Going to war because they don't believe in your God? Well, if you DON'T support those things, then you are on Philip Pullman's side. The God of HDM is a FALSE God of oppression and cruelty. The TRUE GOD in HDM is the power of human consciousness; the power of the angels: Dust. According to Pullman, God isn't some dictatorial lion or king; it's everywhere and all around us. A bit like the force in Star Wars. So call him anti-religious; if he's anti-war, murder, sexual mutilation, castration, queer-murdering and genocide, then so am I.
Oh and are the books any good?

They were the first children's books to win the prestigious Whitbread Award. They are exceedingly well-written and have some astonishingly difficult philosophical ideas rendered into beautifully poetic images for children to understand.

biggest mistake they could have made was giving that part to someone who needs a movie to Star them (when michel gondry is not directing it). those books are pretty unfilmable anyway, though. to finish with a barely navigable simile..... this movie will be chilren of men's narnia to pan's labyrinth's lord of the rings.
