this guy is a fucking genius, old Alfonso Cuaron. him and guelmo del toro, i cant remember how to spell his name, but the pan's labyrinth geezer. they're both passionate about their films. i snuck into a Q&A and guelmo swears likes a fucker, but he loves what he does. and Alfonso Cuaron was very technically minded. apparently that long shot where we follow old clive owen near the tanks and all that was done in ONE take. ONE! the only extra thing they added was the blood that comes on the screen. maybe he said that on this thread above- i aint read it yet, my batteries about to run out.

i was walking down fleet street the other day, imagining the big giant video screens on the buildings. one of the best things about that scene is how well the futuristic stuff blends with the present (as opposed to say the cheesy futuristic LA in 'the island', where they just stick a bunch of crap on the library tower, etc). i also want to know which property they used for the bomb in the coffee shop.

I have to say thta I would have preferred a really nice version of this DVD considerign this is my second favorite film of all time but the documentary sounds great. very good post, mate, but you just shot yourself in the foot, fella. as you said it was in development hell with these two writers bashing away at it like a blinds woodsman on crack and whiskey, then alfonso comes along. he rewrites it, sorts out any narrative problems it had and bang! its greenlit! so yes, he DESERVES to take the credit. no disrespect to the two writers but they obviously could take this vehicle only so far. thats why they are what they are, and alfonso is who he is. he can turn a train wreck into a soaring concorde of majestic beauty. your writer buddies should maybe try writing for eastenders or something?

...but best in the '06? OH yeah. clive owen, and pretty much everybody (including michael caine in possibly the finest performance last year as well), conveyed the somber mood of a world in police-state turmoil while in danger of disappearing. much as i dug _the departed_, _c.o.m._ should have at least gotten nominated for something other than fucking SOUND! but no -- dark, depressive visions of our time transplanted into the near future never cut it in ho'wood these days, if they ever did. j. hoberman in the village voice compared the listless marketing campaign by universal as similar to the way they dumped _12 moneys_ on a never-suspecting movie audience and it withered on the vine at the box office. we recognize its classic status now -- and yes, probably then, too. plus, the inclusion of "court of the crimson king" makes it the finest cinematic use yet of king crimson's music in film, just edging out christina ricci tapdancing to "moonchild" in _buffalo '66_...

I just saw the artwork for the fountain, yeah, that's awful, least-common denominator tripe. It seems to be saying: "It's romantic, ladies, and, look guys, it's gots guys with swords too so you don't have to feel all gay while watching it!" Children of Men was an amazing movie, except for the silly metaphorical ending and the CGI baby, who if you watched her too long, started to look like Gollum or one of those monkeys from Jumanji. Flip63Hole, you missed the fucking point, you weren't supposed to give a shit about her, the character herself was admittedly a giant slut with little self respect. You were supposed to care that she and her baby were the last hope for humanity and therefore not give a shit if you liked individual characters. I thought the movie did that very well. Also, her willingness to be inseminated by any random bloke that came along saved humanity in the film. Hooray for sluts.

by newc0253
Mar 24th, 2007
08:15:03 AM
was the most irritating character in the film, but then she was *meant* to be. the point was that the resistance were mostly the kind of hippy flakes and wankers that clive owen's character (and any other right-thinking person) would run a mile from under normal circumstances. but post-apocalyptic UK obviously ain't normal circumstances. the fat lady with dreads is an exercise in empathy - empathy with the kind of annoying person you wouldn't normally want to hang around with. this is shown in her penultimate scene in the abandoned nursery, when you find out her backstory and actually feel sympathy for her character and presumably why she's such a massive flake. it's all part of the brilliance of cuaron's film, innit?
Book VS Movie...
by beckuary
Mar 24th, 2007
08:31:16 AM
I don't know how many of you have read the book CoM is "based" on, but it's by far and away the strongest example for me personally of a movie being better than the book (with Fight Club holding the title previously). The book is, as is briefly mentioned in the interview, nothing at all like the movie aside from the names and the infertility concept, and the screenplany just runs with the concept and improves it so much. From a semi-rambling book where the characters' actions don't make much sense and you don't care about anyone, you get a genuinely tense and thoughful movie. (Not to say I don't love you, PD James, but this book is not your best."

...it is being pumped out on the losing format in addition to the DVD release. At least I did get to see it in the theatre. Speaking of appearing in the theatres for like 2 minutes...what the hell happened to *Smokin' Aces*?
Smokin Aces will be HD-DVD only as well.

Universal only does HD-DVD and they are the only major studio that is exclusive to them. If they were to smarten up and release Blu Ray movies this stupid format war would be over. I actually bought the Xbox 360 HD-DVD addon mainly for this movie, The Thing and a few other Universal must-haves.

Commentary tracks should be mandatory for DVD releases.

I certainly can't speak for anyone else, but for me a good commentary tremendously enhances the longevity of most films. I'm disappointed to hear the Children of Men DVD doesn't feature one, just as I am when any film I enjoyed in the theater ends up lacking the same. A masterpiece like Children of Men would still be a release day purchase if it had no bonus features whatsoever--there's no doubt there, naturally--but I can't help but wonder how difficult it would have been to enlist willing members of the crew to talk about their experiences on-set, or a qualified intellectual to analyze the cinematography or thematic elements, or even just a moderately well-spoken critic to yammer on about his friendship with the director, who he ate lunch with before the premiere, and how the film restored his faith in humanity. It could be that I'm expecting too much. It's just that, well, a documentary is a documentary: unless it's a truly remarkable piece, I can't see myself revisiting it after an initial viewing, you know? Commentaries don't get old nearly as quickly.
The Fountain DVD art isn't THAT bad...

I mean, it's certainly not good, and considering the sheer amount of awesome imagery in the film they had to work with, it's pretty disappointing... but really, it's not nearly as bad as the Children of Men DVD art. Clive Owen standing beside a wall. What does that have to do with ANYTHING? Arrgh. At least the Fountain DVD art tells you it's a love story (or a... story about love, at any rate), and hints that it involves different time periods, lol. The back of the CoM DVD looks nice, though.

I thought they really had a newborn, then I watched the bonus features. Amazing! Great movie, even though it's every unsettling.

The pregnant woman is a bimbo there, too. And the author clearly has absolutely no understanding of male psychology. My apologies to Mr. Cuaron. In retrospect this isn't his mess and I was wrong to blame him.
