My beef isn't about the R rating so much as the fact that the filmmakers caved in to the MPAA and released it with a rating at all. Yes, some Grindhouse films were rated R, but MANY true Grindhouse movies were rated M or not rated at all. Grindhouse is about "bucking" the system. Making films that appealed to weirdos, freaks and night crawlers. Don't confuse midnight movies with Grindhouse. They are not the same thing. Tarantino would love nothing more than to release the sickest vision possible in an NC-17 or NR format, but the MPAA/distribution system won't allow it to be shown in enough theaters to be noticed. So I am pissed with the whole system that FORCES a rating for a film to be seen in theaters. How much more excited would you be to sit down in the theater on opening night to an NC-17 or NR rated Grindhouse? You know exactly what to expect with an R rating. No surprises. Nothing too controversial. So on April 6, let's enjoy the severely edited version of a film and wait 6 months for the real vision. Just another Hollywood movie.....

Gomez, there are press screenings, one tomorrow night in Hollywood. And Wack, the last collaboration between Tarantino/Rodriguez was From Dusk Til Dawn, 1996, not Four Rooms, 1995.

We'll see after tomorrow night what online critics happen to be at the screening I going to. I guarantee you there will be a few there. Why would the Weinsteins hide this flick after the marketing blitz? Two of their most well known directors coming together again and they burn the online critics? No, I don't think so. Harry or Mori, if you are tracking this debate speak up and let us know if either one of you have been "burned" by the Weinsteins and their "efforts" to hold this film from online critics. Either way I'll send in my review tomorrow night or Saturday morning.

Having dropped on the scene during the early 70's (where I cut my cinematic teeth at drive-ins that showed damn near every grindhouse flick referenced in this film, allow me to clear up a few things: 1. I have a book charting the history of the biggest theatre chain in St. Louis. In the book is a picture of a drive-in marquee with a triple feature of "Beyond The Door", "Abby" and "Deranged". All prime Grindhouse material during the heyday. All rated R. 2. Google the website of the New Beverly Cinema (in my stomping grounds of LA) and check out the titles in QT's Grindhouse Film Festival. 99.9% of those were rated R too. Come to think of it, I didn't even spot any X rated flicks in the whole list. 3. In the beginning of the ratings system, there were 4 ratings: G, M, R & X. M was the equivalent of PG in those days. Steve McQueen's classic "Bullitt" was rated M. That damn sure ain't grindhouse, dude. In addition, the MPAA back in their younger, leaner days weren't as anal-retentive regarding their precious ratings system as they are today. I've seen 1970's era PG rated flicks with F-bombs, T&A AND dudes getting their chests blown away at the hands of 12-gauge shotguns. The MPAA let a lot of stuff slide in those days. It's just as well that they let "Grindhouse" slide, too.

Cannibal Ferox, Ilsa She Wolf Of The SS, Maniac, Cannibal Holocaust, The Gore Gore Girls, Zombie Lake, The Executioner, Basket Case are a few examples of films that were either chopped to get R ratings or released unrated on the seedy theater circuit. We already know that Grindhouse is sooo offensive it needed to be edited. That's my beef. I heard that the fucking Eli Roth fake trailer is so bad that it's been edited! I am anti-censorship. Plain and simple. Even the first few sentences of the TRAILER for Grindhouse describes Grindhouse movies as "films that had too much hardcore sexuality and violence to be shown in most theaters"!

Well, it's almost here isn't it? Of the two films, I'm actually looking forward to seeing Quentin's more..(less CGI and Green Screen action and more ACTUAL Grindhouse style cinema) Robert's stuff's is gooey, gorey fun to be sure, but WAAAAY over the top. But I guess that's the point? I even got a chance to play a pus-dripping, swollen creature in Planet Terror (no, they are NOT technically the living dead, so no...not zombies)... thanks to my friend Greg Nicotero, and got to chase Rose McGowan around a truck. Fun stuff, but still. Kurt Russel will RULE this movie.

A little too posh to be real grindhouse, too selfconscious and too well financed. Dudes needed to take a cue from Dogma and do the movie with the same resources and restrictions of the grindhouse they were supposedly emulating, insteading of exploiting it as a gimmick and really making a 2007 luxury home. QT's is closer to that aesthetic, but less fun than the RR. To quote the ORIGINAL Zombies: "She's Not There."

without 'goofy' concepts, the grindhouse genre ceases to exists. Judging a grindhouse pictures on the grounds of it being too ‘goofy’ (be it in regards to sex, violence, dialogue, or logic) is like saying a particular nonsense poem is too nonsensical. Grindhouses’ purpose is to be over the top with or without direction, and possibly (if not usually) for no good reason at all. Exploitation films are a simple pleasure; one may put great thought into them, or none what-so-ever. For me, that’s kind of the beauty of them; it’s just silly, crazed buffoonery with blood and tits to spare. I think if you saw the film, you would dig it. But to play it safe, go see it at the cheapseat theater so you don’t have give a burp and a fart about the cash.
