I was between 5 and 7 years old and lived in Japan when Gatchaman was on TV there. I loved it. Tho' nowadays I can't believe my folks let me watch it, heh. That, CuteyHoney, sentai classis Gorranger and the like were my shows of choice. When we left Japan I was disapointed in American cartoons. Imagine my joy when Battle of the Planets and Starblazers came over! Imagine my surprise when there was a stoopid robot in Battle of the Planets! Where did THAT come from?!? Anyways, I leaked a few tears of joy at the thought of a Gatchaman movie!!! YAY!

I watched Battle of the Planets in Australia and cant remember the robot and his dog, until I baught the dvd, lucky it had some japanese versions on it as well.

You know what would be great? Film this as the Japanese GATCHAMAN, then re-edit it as a BATTLE OF THE PLANETS film for American audiences, re-dub the lines in English (without subtitles) and insert 7-Zark-7 and 1-Rover-1. That way, everybody gets what they want...except those G-FORCE and EAGLE RIDERS fans. Fuck 'em.

I got my brother a couple of Battle of the Planets dvds for Christmas a few years ago, with "Gatchaman" on one side and Battle of the Planets on the other. Battle of the Planets didn't hold up well at all and I was quite disappointed.. they didn't compare with how I remembered them. And "Gatchaman".. well I have little patience for japanese flibbledy floo so yeah, I was disappointed.

I tried to see them on the web but the site was slooooow. I think it looks good so far. I just hope the story holds up and the acting is top notch. And by far the best yo-yo weapon wielding manga/anime character is Asamiya Saki from the Sukeban Deka series. I'm hopeful about Astro Boy but if they screw that up, they'll be a lot of really pissed off people. That's the God of Manga's classic work watched and adored by fans from around the world.

and would love to see this made into a kickass feature. Starblazers was cool, too, but not as cool as Battle of the Planets. The Rhino collection on DVD has both the original Japanese Gatchaman versions and the American versions. Check 'em out!

What I really want to see is an anime version of Lone Wolf and Cub. When I was in college I started collecting the American import version from First Publshing. It only got to 40 issues or so before they went bankrupt. Years later Dark Horse got involved, and the rest is Manga history. Come on Frank, call your buddies overseas and get the ball rolling.

For reference, look at the 2nd picture where you can see 4 of the Red Impulse aircraft as well as the Phoenix, which looks identical to how it looks in this mini-series.

But here's the simple answer: The bad guys didn't shoot them because GForce HAD to make the whirlwind human pyramid thingy in order to trounce the baddies. And whether they like to admit it or not, baddies LIKE getting trounced. Why do you think they shoot thousands of rounds at the heroes and always manage to miss? Remember GI Joe? Those guys were the absolute worst shots the world has ever known. Or the best. You'd think a few shots would at least accidentally hit someone! Need more examples? James Bond baddies never just popped a couple of caps in the back of James'head while he was mounted on top of some Honey (or Pussy, or Vesper, or whoever). Instead, they'd capture Bond with his pants down and then monologue long enough for Bond to get out of the situation. Somewhere down deep, Blofeld , SMERSH and SPECTRE knew that if they ever offed Bond, life would be far duller. Especially Blofeld. I mean, all he'd have would be that darn cat and a pinky ring.
