Do you even READ the articles completely BEFORE you talk about them? Here.. I'll Highlight the important bits... The FIRST LINE... "The new United Artists led by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner IS IN TALKS to acquire..." "Reaction has been mixed, but several distribs were pursuing the project" Nowhere in the article does it say... Tom Cruise picked up the film for distribution. Fuck, maybe you should learn to EDIT stories, so then you have actual NEWS

Something deep within Coppola shattered while filming "Apocalypse Now," a notoriously brutal production. He hasn't made a Vito since, just a couple Sonnys and whole mess of Fredos. But he can never be dismissed; every new film promises greatness. Still, overall, Coppola has produced more Part Threes than Part Twos. That old man had too much wine...

I saw her on a german talk show where she talked a bit about meeting coppola and what it was like to work with him. of course she was just amazed by Coppola and the arty Raiders prospect (WTF?). Seriously, she seemed excited about the subject as this film is mostly based on the thoughts of a romanian philosopher coppola got hooked on quite a while ago. she was also explaining Coppola's flexibility regarding the circumstances of shooting and how he spontaneously displaced a scene set to be shot in a beach house in the ocean or on the shore because the weather was so wild...something like that. You realize that if Robert Duvall had relented in his contract talks and not done "Days of Thunder" and Winona Ryder had never dropped out of the production, "GODFATHER 3" would have wound up a classic? It's hard to think otherwise. The overwhelming weight on poor Sofia's shoulders making a debut in a pivotal role in the most eagerly awaited sequel ever (since the SW prequels weren't really a blip yet) and most importantly the absence of Tom "My Kraut/Mick Friend" Hagen, derailed a film that had all the necessary story elements but still lacked the full set of tools necessary to deliver. So Coppola may have had one last great film in him, but the Movie Gods decided he'd done enough and stepped in to take him down. I hope he's got another one up his sleeve. We'll see.

that film was destined to be buffalo shit from the start. you could smell it a mile off. the only glue that held that train wreck together was Pacino and thats a testiment to his talents and wickedness. Sofia was just plain shit and thats too bad for her. she needs to crank out some descent movies of her own to redeem her arse. coppola aint shit now. the man made JACK for fucks sake! wake up and smell the coffee...or your mum's ass whichever one is nearer.

Have you any idea how many bad movies Takashi Miike makes a year? Twelve, and three good ones, each year. And still he's the most exciting working director. Of course "If he feels strongly enough to comeo ut of retirement for this film, it might be a classic" isn't really in character for a shit spewing talkbacker... So, carry on. Meanwhile I'll keep an open mind and have something to look forward to next year besides boring student films from Sundance and big budget flicks that shit all over Marvel heroes.

The entire movie was altered on the fly when Duvall told Coppola he wanted Pacino money. So the focus of the movie changed from the very promising premise of Tom Hagen and Michael Corleone becoming enemies to the side plot of Michael's grooming of Vincent, Altobello, and the whole Vatican bank thing, Those last two elements were supposed to be framing devices, not the center of the picture. This is the equivalent of not having Fredo in Godfather 2--it would have been as big a train wreck as G3. So the film lacked a strong core. Once Duvall dropped out, the movie shouldn't have been made but the production was too many millions deep to call off. So Coppola gambled on the fly and lost. No biggy, happens to me in Vegas all the time.

in his private life. He never makes film about his beliefs (unlike John Travolta who no-one seems to slag) and the only people who ever bitch about him are the press and people like you who have never met him. He has worked with Spielberg, Coppola, Kubrick, Stone, De Palma, Scorsesse, P T Anderson, Cameron Crowe, Tony Scott, Micheal Mann, Rob Riner, Barry Levinson, John Woo... and thats just the directors, not to mention all the actors. Never have I heard any of these great people complain about him, all I hear is how commited he is. I don't care what he does at home, he's an actor, i care about what he does on screen.

apparently this movie is based on a book by Mircea Eliade...who knew Joseph Campbell, amongst others, through the Eranos group. Campbell, as is known, influenced Lucas's Star Wars mythology. In Eranos you also had Jung, Scholem, Corbin, Quispel etc... (studies on mythology, kabbalah, sufism, gnosticism, etc.) If the movie is about the origins of language and consciousness, it will probably go into shamanic rituals, the 'secret language' of the underworld that they have access to, the axis mundi... Interesting stuff. You can go many places in a story with these themes... from Africa to Greece, South America.. yeah, I can see an Indiana Jones type story. Bring in Rosslyn Chapel and you have a link via Isaak von Sinclair to Holderlin, Schelling, and Hegel. Make a story about the transmission of ancient knowledge about the divine origins of man (Adam Kadmon) from Atlantis to Hiram Abiff (mythical figure in Masonic circles and Rosicrucians around the time of the counter-Enlightenment) to Solomon, then through the Eleusyinian mysteries and other mystery religions to Plato, up to the above mentioned secret societies and speculative philosophy. From there to the 'new world'... Since the ark of the covenant has been done, how about the temple of Solomon itself? Has that been done already? The beginning of consciousness is the renewal of the covenant. The Logos (Law) incarnate. The new messiah, end of times kind of stuff, but withouth the apocalyptic effects. Probably a higher type of consciousness theme, neo andros, although i hope not. A new flood, coinciding with global warming... all would be too simplistic. Then again, I prefer philosophy to mysticism. Oh fuckit. I might as well just read the damn book...

Vanilla Sky Part Deux. "He begins a quest to understand the origin of language and the secrets of consciousness???" Say WHAT? Remember the good ol' days when someone'd get struck by lightning and either (A) get flash-fried or (B) turn into a 6'3" doofus wearing red longjohns? The fountain-of-youth stuff is fine, but once the plot headed down the path of discovering the secrets of the universe, a $10, 2-hour Scientology commercial began flashing right before my eyes. No thanks... think I'll pass. :P

by Donald McKinney
Mar 21st, 2007
10:27:59 AM
I'm pleased that Cruise and co. is now controling United Artists, it could redeem him, but it does seem like a two-fingered salute to Paramount for dumping him. With him picking up Coppola's Youth Without Youth, Cruise should get other great directors to do a film or two for United Artists, like Terry Gilliam, David Cronenberg and/or the Coen Brothers. Their films always attract attention. P.S. Coppola produced films for United Artists before Cruise took over, like Jeepers Creepers and Assassination Tango.

As for the genius who thinks "Godfather Part II" and "Dracula" are embarrassments -...."Godfather Part 3" got nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Director and Best Picture and turned a nice profit. "Dracula" is a very good film, made alot of cash and in its pre-credit sequence ALONE has more genius in it than most hacks working achieve in a career. Oops sorry, I didn't realize you were from England, where the knowledge of cinema is exceeded only by the quality of the dental care. Look, I didn't say that the Oscars were "proof" of quality, but "GF 3" got mostly good reviews, got representation in the year end awards AND made money. So, if some joker posts that it was an "embarrassment" I have to set the record straight don't I? See, I may think "A Beautiful Mind" sucked but I can't pretend that my personal opinion matches what the response was to the film in the general sense. Got it? Also, I am not your "mate". Ok, first of all The Outsiders was in no way his last 'decent" mobie. Wtf people. "Tucker", "Gf 3", "Dracula" and "The Rainmaker" are all GOOD or even better than good films. Just because they ain't masterpieces doesn't mean that they blow - people are way over the top in assessing Coppola's work.......The likelihood of the comeback i think is high for 2 reasons, the mindset of the director (Google some interviews and you'll see what I mean), and the personal/artistic nature of the project. He put up his own money for Godsakes - the entire point of the film, is to preserve his legacy. It's not like he's directing "Wild Hogs 2" here.

According to this article that came out today... http://www.reuters.com/article /entertainmentNews/idUSN233413 7120070323?feedType=RSS Sony Pictures Classics just snagged the rights to Coppola's movie, which doesn't have ANYTHING to do with United Artists.. Did you think maybe, just maybe, that you were talking out yer ass and that you should: a) shut your yapper b) go back to jerkin' off to your poster of the silver surfer in your parents basement, or c) go to the Lost talkback.

There's been another report that it's actually Sony Pictures Classics that's picked up the rights to Youth Without Youth, not United Artists. But, seeing as SPC has distributed some of UA's more recent films, maybe they're both doing it.
