Great news :) Miyazaki's films are immense, even if the last 10 seconds of Howl's Moving Castle was the stupidest thing I've seen in quite some time... ;)

Wish I knew how those rumours got started, because the conduits were sound, if you know what I mean. Maybe it's a new Takahata project? Who knows. Time will tell. The official Ghibli website is apparently going to host Ponyo images from later today!

I actually think most anime is overrated but Miyazaki's films transcend the medium and culture. He's an artist for those who don't generally like anime, but at the same time he never seems watered down or comprimises his films.

wow. AICN should extend this to all movie news, e.g. for the transformers movie, key words are 'transformer', 'eye' and 'more than meets'. or, for 300, key words are 'spartan', 'persian' and 'big fucking battle'. this will help us illiterate readers to grasp the big concepts more readily.

...that it's actually images of GORO's son that Grandpa Miyazaki is using for character models, which makes a lot more sense. Given the well-publicized beef between Hayao and Goro, the only thing I can picture Hayao using pictures of Goro for is target practice. To be fair, Nausicaa.net got this wrong also.

isn't considered anime? If I feel Stanley Kubrick's movies transcend film... that that mean it's no longer a film? Then what is it? In the end it is anime. There's good stuff, bad stuff, groundbreaking/transcending the norm stuff, and the typical mainstream cookie cutter shit. But it's still anime. You can't just separate what you like and abhor the medium as a whole. Who are you trying to kid? Anyway we've gotta learn more about this flic... like what exactly is the title?

Father, Mother, Cliff
by Banky the Hack
Mar 19th, 2007
01:48:14 PM
So this guy is walking along the beach and cliffs by the ocean enjoying a beautiful day when he comes across a sobbing little boy at the top of one of the cliffs. The man crouches down in front of the boy and asks, "What's wrong son?" "Well," answers the boy, "My mommy and daddy were fighting and my mommy pushed my daddy and my daddy pushed my mommy and they both fell over the cliff." So the man stands up and peers over the edge of the cliff, and sees two mangled bodies far below on the rocks, the waves crashing over them. He turns back to the boy, unzips his fly, and says, "Man, it's just not your day is it?"

It was wonderful! Tons of fun was had with singing of pirate songs, costumes, and the showing of the first movie with a really great print. The trailer was so good as soon as it ended I wanted to see it again... and I guess everyone else did too because they did.

I was at the POTC event. My thoughts on the trailer: The action looks better than the previous two. There's a great shot of Jack Sparrow sword fighting Davy Jones on the mast of a ship as it circles a giant whirlpool and a storm rages around them. There's a giant ship floating across the sands of a desert. Tons of Rush and his beloved monkey. A giant waterfall at the end of the earth. Chow Yun Fat's head is shaved and tattooed and he has a goatee of kung fu kick-ass-ery. Jack crazily lights a cannon that is tied to a rope he is holding to catapult himself into the sea. Dr Tran was giving out Hot Dickings at the screening...Hot Dickings and Disney shwag bags containing a replica of Jacks head-scarf, a demo of POTC online, a cool piece of promotional art all tucked away in a snazzy black case. The highlight of the event (besides the trailer and HOT DICKINGS!) was a pirate with a jar of dirt..BEHOLD MY JAR OF DIRT. Oh...and there was this crazy scottsman in a kilt screaming pirate nonsense and revealing the origin of "AAAAAARRRRRR!".

...please god, someone put a copy of Salman Rushdie's "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" in Miyazaki's hands, and convince him to film it. I guarantee it'll be his best film. Please, god, please. Look, I'm asking god for a miracle, and I don't even believe in god! That's how important it is that he reads this book!

From what I heard, Hayao was not fully responsible for Howl's, there was actually some other director who then dropped out during a late stage of pre-produciton or something and Miyazaki took over, otherwise Spirited Away was supposed to be his last work or something... not too sure... but anyway, it's what I heard...

re howl's moving castle. i agree, son. had production qualities of every other ghibli film (as in it was the bollocks!), but the story was all over the pleace. didn't know who's motivation was what, or where the hell the story was going. his weakest effort since kiki. and ironically both films he took over from someone else. when he sees a film through from its birth then it usually turns aaht alright.

That corner animation is indeed from a Betty Boop cartoon... it was originally footage of Cab Calloway singing "Saint James Infirmary" that was rotoscoped by Fleisher Studios and used for a sequence in which Koko the Clown, I believe, metamorphoses into a number of odd creatures while singing the tune and dancing that weird-ass dance during a trip through Hell. I haven't seen the cartoon in perhaps 40 years but it's damn memorable...

Everytime I hear he has a new film coming out I pray it isn't his last, he keeps mentioning retirement, but noone can touch him in terms of consistently amazing anime. Many people claimed Howl's Moving Castle was one of his weaker efforts, I have no idea what they're talking about...it was a beautiful movie and I enjoyed every second of it.

Maybe they could put him on ice, like Walt Disney...
