I've just started watching these DVDs. It's obvious to me that this is a serialized show with at least one main "case" being worked on at all times.

My question is, is this show like MURDER ONE, where each season has a different "case"? Or is it more X-FILES with an over-arching "conspiracy"?

I'm asking becuase, as much as I've liked the first three episodes, I don't want to invest if I'm not going to get closure to at least the current "case."

Structurally, the show is closer to X-FILES than MURDER ONE. In terms of quality and bringing a real sense of closure, MARS is closer to MURDER ONE than X-FILES.

Keep watching. Closure will be yours, my friend.

This cool show is like MURDER ONE for the first 2 seasons in that each season covers one big case. The 3rd season followed that format for the first half but will supposedly now shift to one mystery per episode....assuming they're not canceled. I hope there's more life to VERONICA MARS: The FBI years. Will she run into Fox and Dana out in the field?

She's actually been incredibly cool to me and this site and a lot of other parties over the years- and she doesn't fuck up a lot.

What I think may have happened? Some of her sources may have been agents or managers or publicists or execs alerted to the fact that a lot of VM cast members of actors were not getting asked back for next season. Her sources may have leapt to the conclusion that the show itself was definitely finished.

I'm guessing if the show comes back at all, it will come back under the FBI plan.

I was SOOOO hoping it was true. Jeez. It's because of the dumb UPN shows like Mars and Everybody Hates Chris and the overly-extended WB shows like 7th heaven and One Tree Hill that cool stuff like Mercy Reef/Aquaman wasn't aired and other cool shows weren't made.

Nonsense. Gimme a fucking break. Mars is an excellent show. And Chris is another good show that suffered from neglect by The CW. Remember that Chris got high ratings for UPN and it even beat Joey. Now it's nowhere near the ratings it got because The CW decided to put it on a Sunday night. The CW is retarded. And Supergary focus your hate toward 7th Heaven or Runaway of the Badussy Cat Whores. Don't hate on Mars.

As long as her Dad's still in the picture somewhat (he's my favorite character on the show). Maybe a guest spot for Logan, Wallace, Mac and Weevil every now and then. But they don't need to be regulars. And they have to come up with some excellent new supporting characters that they'll actually use. I kinda hope it's the academy setting and not the full-fledged agent thing. I just think it will be more interesting and believable.

"Would it be the same show without Mac, Wallace, Weevil and daddy Mars?" No, of course it wouldn't be. And The Powers That (w)Be want it that way. That's why they're pushing for a format change. They want a different show. They want a show that gets ratings AND critical appeal. My idea? Have Veronica Mars stay the same and become the first original series for the Sleuth channel.

(and I have nothing against personally), but she's not an ethically responsable journalist. We've seen her pull some shit before, reporting some unfounded rumor and then act like "oh noes, they lied to me, I'm the victim" when she knew it was bullshit 10 minutes after she posted it. What I interpreted this as is that he fully expected Veronica to be at the FBI in four years, and would have had it happen over four years, but now that he sees that the show wouldn't last that long, he's going to jump to the conclusion. I don't see this as a "Hmm, let's put her at the FBI?" type of thing, it's more like "Well, we're going to be gone soon. Let's jump to the FBI"

And I like Veronica Mars F.B.I too if it has Mac working as a tech, and daddy mars moves out to Va. with Vro. I can lose the rest, and meet a whole new set of characters. Rob could contrive ways to get the other characters involved at some point, but I wouldn't mind the microscope to land somewhere besides Neptune.

No. Keith, as a small time local sheriff, finds the dead body of a local girl. the FBI sends one of their agents, the young Veronica, to investigate the murder, in relation with a serial killler they've been tracking for a while. What secrets will Veronica unearth in the mysterious town of Neptune?

I don't know about the jump ahead, but I'll take whatever Veronica I can get in this state. PLEASE STAY. This and The OC (I can't believe how great the last season was after an abominable third) were the only teen shows I've liked since Buffy went bye-bye and Gilmore Girls lost the Palladinos and subsequently went lame-o, and now I might be losing them all in one fall sweep. BWAH! What's even going to be on the CW next season if this gets canceled? I don't think any of their dramas are doing so hot, except heavyweight Gilmore, and there's no way the execs could've gotten the leads to stick around without the Palladinos; what were they thinking? CW should've picked up OC too. But regardless, VERONICA. I don't know how they think canceling their only critically acclaimed show that also has that coveted diehard cult fanbase for DVD sales is a justifiable move.
Either way, Season Three is still terrible.

People can say what they want about Lost losing quality in its third season, but the show that really shot itself in the foot was Veronica Mars. I was a diehard viewer of the first two seasons, but I finally gave up on the third season about 11 episodes in. A lot of it had to do with the necessary move away from the great setting of Neptune High, but: the stupid rape plot, the sporadic month-long disappearances of favorites like Wallace and Mac, the decidedly non-compelling new characters, and the achievement of actually making Veronica and Logan boring drove me away for good.

Obviously Rob Thomas has an inkling of the nose-dive in quality if he's planning on jumping ahead past Hearst College and into an FBI-training setting. It will turn it into a completely different show, but it's really not a bad idea; I'll be willing to give it another shot. If it gets renewed, that is.

This latest from http://community.tvguide.com/t hread.jspa?messageID=800085381 "And while we're clearing up false rumors, let me set the record straight about all this Veronica Mars fourth-season flash-forward business. Contrary to reports, Rob Thomas' retooled Mars would not take place at an FBI Academy, with Veronica serving as a trainee. Our favorite snarky sleuth would be an actual agent. Personally, I love the idea — even though it would probably trigger a major cast purge."
"Veronica Mars, FBI"

So the premise would probably be: Sassy Veronica Mars, a green FBI agent, returns to her hometown of Neptune, CA to solve a crime. Her father is either the sheriff or a PI. (I'm banking that Thomas will have Keith remain the sheriff, under this format change.) Veronica gets reacquainted with her high school love, Logan. Over the course of the season, her best friend Wallace, now a famous basketball star, shows up in Neptune for an episode. ... This would be a radical change. I'm not sure if I would like it, to be honest.

I agree 100% with your assessment of this season. They did shoot themselves in the foot- the stories were completely forgettable, and add to that, Veronica became truly unlikeable, which is a HUGE freakin' no-no for any form of entertainment. Whatever the case, Rob Thomas certainly didn't earn a fourth season based on what he and his writers delivered in this do-or-die situation. Really sad.

Just FYI, but the show was headed in that direction anyway. There are several hints of this in Season 3 and Sir Thomas has talked about the FBI being the ultimate destination of the show before. Jumping forward would be fine with me, as long as Mac and Keith are still in it. I've been wanting them to drop Wallace since Season 1 and if Piz, Parker, Logan, or Weevil got cut, I wouldn't mind too much. Actually, if they do this jump, I probably see Veronica and Logan being married by that point, and they can focus on FBI whatnot and avoid all the love drama bullshit.
Logan and Mac...

Nah I can't see Veronica and Logan married in this fast-forward premise. I see Thomas essentially rebooting the series. In my speculated series premise above, the premiere would play out like the pilot for a new show. It would be about a new FBI agent lady who returns to her hometown, which has its share of secrets. She crosses paths with her bad-boy high school sweetheart (Logan), who will probably be wrapped up in some business shenanigans. Keith will be the sheriff. And as much as I love Mac, I can't see her factoring much into this new show: "Veronica Mars, FBI".

Have her working for Kane Software. Kane Software has a division that handles government contracts. The FBI uses Kane Software's services. So there you go. That's how Mac could be factored into this new format. I agree: Thomas is planning to reboot the whole show.

Sorry, I had to. I like and enjoy the show, but RT needs to grow a real spine. All along, he has played CW's bitch and constantly remade the show and shuffled the cast in and out to please the network and their accountants.

Then just weeks ago, he was saying that there would be no closer episode or closure, and practically daring the network to cancel the show.

Things have kinda changed now, haven't they? No doubt Kristen Bell has a career ahead of her (hopefully not making crappy horror movies like her spiritual predecessor, Buffy), but is RT that afraid he'll never get another show made to have to kowtow to the heads of a second-rate "network"? I hope he has more pride than that.

VM got almost three seasons, and people should be thankful; I am. On a big network, it might not have lasted three episodes with the ratings it drew. Sad but true.

I'll REALLY miss Keith, Wallace and Mac if they are not in the show. More so than Logan and I love his character!

I was really looking forward to the last arc which was supposed to be Wallace/Mac based. I guess I just wanted to see the friendship of Veronica/Wallace/Mac explored more.

I thought the CW was going to be a good thing for VM. Season 3 hasn't been as good, but I've still enjoyed it. However, I feel the mystery-long arc format suits the show better than mini-arcs.

Oh well, I don't how to feel about all of this. Sword of Damocles anyone? :(

They spent all season setting up the world. Jumping ahead three years would pretty much get rid of both the concept of the show and all the supporting characters people love. Maybe they won't get better ratings if they stick with what makes the show work, but totally changing it will only cause them to lose half the viewers that love the show. Just give us one more season with a good season-long arc - PLEASE! That's all I want from you CW. I'm sure there's nothing you've got in development that is better than this show. No, not even a second season of find the Pussycat Doll.

Jumping years ahead could be the best thing that could happen to this show. Come up with a really solid season-long arc, jump in en media res so that your new characters have questionable motivations ala the first season, keep Keith and hopefully Wallace around in some respect, and I think it could be fantastic. Logan? I've kinda come to feel like they've run that storyline into the ground. He can show up for a guest spot ala Angel on Season 4 of Buffy.

As a big fan of the show, I've gradually come to the realization that this show, as is, will never be a big hit. It still has that "Nancy Drew" aura (though undeserved) that may explain why it doesn't gain any ground in the ratings. So, I think "Veronica Mars FBI" can only show improved ratings in the world of three CSI's, three Law and Order's, NCIS, Criminal Minds, and 20 other similar shows. (....as long as the writing staff, Veronica, Keith, Mac, Wallace, and Logan are still around!) Who wouldn't want to see Kristen Bell kick ass and take no prisoners as an FBI agent? The line forms here! CW - go for it!
