i was a big fan of vmars. loved the pop culture references, great casting, witty dialog, but above all i loved that it kept me guessing. i was really excited for season 3, but found i was just getting bored, the show never ended in a way that made me *have* to watch the next episode like seasons 1 and 2. i think one of the big problems, was the big "mystery" was dumb. it didn't affect any of the major characters beyond serving as a plot point... i neither know, nor care who the rapist is. i'll own season one and two, and when my kids ask me what happened, i'll tell them, kieth uses the money he gets from kendall to send veronica to stanford.

Why did they force the show to give up on story arcs and do one-off episodes (supposedly to see if ratings improved) if they were going to cancel it anyway? The self-contained eps haven't even aired yet. This was a show that at least deserved a proper ending.

Quality went drastically downhill this season because the stupid cw made them do 3 arc's rather than 1, and given the choice between ending the show this year or carrying on arc-less for another season, i'd rather see it go out with some semblance of quality.

Clark pines over Lana. Clark visits Lex's mansion. Clark meets a meteor freak or "zonie". Clark goes to the Daily Bugle to have Chloe look up something on the computer. The meteor freak attacks Lana. Just as Clark is about to save Lana she passes out. Clark saves the day. Clark then goes to his barn loft in the epilogue to pine over Lana.

There may not be any official word until mid-May. The entire CW is having quite a bit of a problem determining which shows it can afford to keep. The problem with Veronica Mars is that it's been an expensive show for the CW (and prior to them, UPN) to keep on the air. The same problem is facing Gilmore Girls, Smallville and 7th Heaven. Frankly, my colleagues and I aren't sure if ANY of CW's scripted one-hours will return next season. (Supernatural may have a better chance than the others.) But Veronica fans should take heart: GG, Smallville and 7th Heaven could be most at risk because each of these three has already accumulated over 100 episodes for the valuable syndication market. Veronica Mars has not. The question now is, can Veronica Mars be continued for a lot less money?

i mean, it's their best show by a long shot, though I realize its ratings not quality that determine whether a show satys on the air. I kind of felt like the fact that 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls probably can't come back for another season, gave VM a better chance. We saw what happened to CW's original series this season. Do they really want to try and launch more than one or two new shows in the fall? Doesn't the fact that VM brings them more critical acclaim than any other show at least count for something? There's been so much set up of the whole college setting this season, it seems like a real shame if they don't get to now explore the world they've built.
Save this show

12:09:20 AM
Really. There's nothing on the air right now that's quite like it. It's not a strict 'genre' show. I was really hoping to see a fourth season with Veronica in an FBI internship. If they keep One Fucking Tree Hill and cancel this, I'll be so pissed I don't know what I'll do. Probably just feel powerless and disgruntled.
Advice on saving the show...
by Jim Jam Bongs
Mar 16th, 2007
12:09:36 AM
I'm not a producer myself, but here have been my observations for Mr. Thomas: 1) Scale the cast back to just five regulars, which include Veronica, Keith, Logan, Wallace and Mac. (Sorry, Weevil.) 2) Move Veronica away from the college environment. On-location shooting in an actual college is expensive. (This is one reason why Buffy quit going to college after Season 4.) Time to take most of the show's locations in-studio. I would suggest fast-tracking Veronica's internship with the FBI for the next season. So the episodes could rely on three "FBI sets": for example, Veronica's Cuble, Conference Room, and Crime Lab. ... I expect many here to hate these suggestions of mine, but honestly it's what comes to my mind as the best chance for getting a fourth season (at least 13 episodes).

A new direction for Veronica...
by Jim Jam Bongs
Mar 16th, 2007
12:24:20 AM
When Veronica Mars first premiered, its concept was "high school girl detective." I think to save this show, Mr. Thomas should evolve the series (reformatting it, essentially) into "FBI agent intern girl". High school as a show setting sells. The law enforcement setting sells (of course). But historically shows set in a college world have bombed. For some reason, TV viewers don't like watching shows set in an higher education setting.
Move The Show To Pay Showtime, Keep The FBI Angle...
by Darth Fabulous
Mar 16th, 2007
12:35:32 AM
...team it with Dexter and cross your fingers. The storylines have always been dark (i.e. rape, incest, broken families, possible murderous rich boys, possible murderous biker gangs) so why not put it on pay cable? Why does it always seem to be the last word when the best show on television gets cancelled?
DVD Sales?
by Darth Fabulous
Mar 16th, 2007
12:38:53 AM
Haven't the DVD sales always been strong for VM...one reason the ratings have historically struggled is because everyone waits for the show to come out on DVD. Fox brought back Family Guy because the DVD sales were so great...yeah, I realize it is an animated series and costs less to produce, but the concept is still the same. Produce less episodes in a season (i.e. the standard 12-13 eps on pay television) and sell the hell out of the DVD. Why would this not work?

The show has been on a steady decline since the first, horrible "Donut-centric" episodes of the second season. Now Thomas wants to turn it into an FBI procedural? Please -- this sounds as viable a series makeover as Whedon's "Slayer School." Grasping at straws much? Face it, Thomas -- you blew your wad with the first season, and the rest was crap.

Time for my rant...

01:37:05 AM
This is really fucking ridiculous. I can understand the CW being hesitant towards VM at first, that's fine. But when VM not only maintains the GG numbers that they were aiming for, but SURPASSES it, and get their all time best ratings ever, reduces the budget and does arcs, why the fuck do you cancel it? It met every single one of your expectations. I can understand that in general, the ratings aren't that high, but this is the CW, none of the shows are doing well (except for the reality programming). Then, you look at things like how it's the only critically accepted show on the network, and one of the few returning shows that has a lifespan surpassing two years, and when most of the pilots you produced were either trash or cancelled, what are you banking on? Virtually nothing has changed with VM since the decision to give them a 20 episode season rather than 22, so if this cancellation HAD to happen, at least tell Thomas, so they can end properly, because now we're going to get some fucking "Case of the missing bicycle", and some budding romance between Piz and Veronica, because Thomas was hopeful on a season four. So great. Wonderful. Barely anything will be resolved, the end points of these characters that Thomas had in mind will not be reached, and the show will end with a relative weak, 5 stand alone episode whimper. I agree with all the previous posts. Why bother doing standalone if it was getting cancelled anyway? And shop this thing to Showtime NOW. Maybe it'll finally get the respect it deserves, and not have to pander. Because with VM gone, and Studio 60 looking doubtful, what the fuck am I supposed to get excited about?
Yeah, the report has been updated...

It's somewhat less bleak. I'd also be all for the FBI angle, and I know people complained about this year, and they're not completely wrong, but I truly believe that if Thomas could have done a big arc, things would have been better. Both the conclusion episodes to the arcs were fantastic, and if season four was the FBI angle WITH an arc, I think that'd be wonderful. Just figure a way out for Logan to still be around.

A lot of you did make good points on the issue, and I think I kind of hastily decided I'd like it. The whole concept of her being there I like as an idea, and in "Dont Run" I loved the stuff with Lamb getting ignored by the FBI, and her gelling with them, but yeah, it definitely could be executed poorly, and it'll probably lose some people. Thomas hasn't let me down once though with any of the episodes he's written, so I figure I owe him. Veronica running Mars Investigations would definitely work, it just doesn't seem that different than what's all ready happening.
In retrospect, with Lamb dead...
by DanielKurland
Mar 16th, 2007

It maybe would have been interesting to have a season 4 arc revolving around his murder, and have him appear to Keith in the way that Lily did to Veronica in the first season. His total surprise death worked well, and I think it was handled appropriately, but more of Lamb is always good.

It was fun while it lasted, but the masses have spoken, and they don't like quality TV. If RT somehow manages to pull it off, the FBI stuff could be entertaining; strip the cast to VM and her dad, with guest appearances from their more colorful cohorts.

And is it just me, or is RT a rather desperate fellow, continually bending over to please the CW idiots? He's managed to make it work mostly, but at some point, you just gotta say no, and stick to your guns, even if your show gets canned.

09:32:53 AM
The real problem with so-called reality programming like the search for the next Pussycat Slut is that it has no syndication life. It also engenders no brand loyalty for the network. Once the quick hit of ratings crack cocaine has subsided, the audience that goes for this type of thing flits off in search of the next hit of so-called reality at the next network. The audience for a program like VM may not be as large, however, it's a loyal audience that will reward a network that does right by them, and shun a network that screws them. The WB felt it when Angel and Buffy fans revolted - to the point that they realized they could no longer stand alone. The CW will feel it if VM is no more.
Maybe another network can pick it up.

Man they really need to get their act together. They have so much potential and it seems that they don't have anyone who can market the shows they have that can make them a good channel. Plus you have to have specific TV requirements to get their channel. You would think that they would want to be more accessible since they are a new channel. I guess they don't care enough to stick around more than a year. I pray that Smallville and Supernatural don't end the same way......

is the idea of 12-episode seasons for programs on the CW. It works for FX, TNT (The Closer), Showtime, and HBO. Some actors, including Michael C. Hall of Dexter fame, have expressed a preference for a shorter television shooting season (reference his comments at the Paley Fest). The writing on those shows also generally tends to be better, as few shows with 20+ episode seasons hold up as well as VM, 24, or the first few seasons of GG.
