This is by no means the first 2008 Oscar contender though. Zodiac better be represented come the awards.

Which is a relief, as I was uncomfortable about finding someone who plays a 13-year old character so hot.

This sounds great but the Oscars are a farce that'll never give best actress to someone so young and unknown. Most voters don't watch most of the films so they go with the ones they see or the big name actors and real talent like this gets passed over again and again. Nomination maybe, if best supporting she'd have a shot. But i'll be watching this 'cause i like ball, it sounds interesting and she'd damn fine

Sweeping generalities and huge, empty proclaimations, without subtlety or detail... sounds like Ball himself could have written this review.

dear god, i hate whiny, white people. especially selfish, whiny, white people. and ball fills up all of his work with just such nails-on-a-chalkboard characters. and, sweet jesus, what was that CRAP about that bag blowing in the wind?! american beauty was a dumb movie. and, america is full of suckers who bought into that idiocracy...

NATE CHAMP: Ummmm.... there was plenty of detail in that review. Also do you guys realize how few plants actually occur on this website? Assuming someone's a plant means your assuming that PR people understand the internet and they don't yet. I assure you. There's like 5 or 6 plants on this site a year total. On another note, American Beauty was very good but took the suburban dysfunction theme as far as it could go. I think most of the backlash came because there were a host of imitators after that film that were complete critical failures. And they cheapened AB because of it. Also, I'm a massive six feet fan. It was the most interesting show on television.
Extremely well written review.

So that rules out it being a Plant. Alan Ball has so far managed to sprinkle some genuine class over his projects, so I'd expect nothing less for this. Paint me intrigued.

This comes as no shock, and I like SIX FEET UNDER. Regardless, 75% of the show from Season 3 onward when Claire went to art school (or maybe the arrival of Lily Taylor) was pure drivel. The show had as good as sunk itself until the final 4 episodes of the last series, and the grace note of the final episode. In other words, Ball is his own worst enemy. The novel is quite a good read, but I hope it escapes the fate of LITTLE CHILDREN due to overreverence to the source. By the way, Eckhart is very good casting; Collette, a bit obvious. If anyone wants to be spoiled as to the very graphic scene mentioned in the review, just say so.

I love Alan Ball's work. He's not perfect, but for me he usually strikes a wonderful mix of unflinching honesty and well-earned humor. He embraces subjects in his films and tv shows that most directors shy away from, giving sly commentaries on everyday life.

Plus, Ball tends to employ top-notch writers, cinematographers, and actors (especially actors), giving them parts to sink their teeth into. He tends to thrive on left-of-center projects, and "Nothing is Private" (or whatever it'll soon be called) sounds like vintage Alan Ball. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Can't wait.
