dammit, Lane

LaneMyers, read my post in the Kubrick memorial. I really thought you might have been him. Oh well, I'll meet him someday... the same day I'll meet Shakespeare. But William will have to wait until I'm done speaking to Stanley... all of heaven will have to wait. There was never a better artist, IMHO. I also smile on the fact that there is no BLAIR WITCH discussion, even though this film, is only trailing THE PHANTOM MENACE and EYES WIDE SHUT now in terms of what im tweaking to see (any other year and BLAIR would be # 1). Actually, Im now thinking that EYES WIDE SHUT is the # 1. Star Wars is my favorite movie, but Kubrick is my favorite artist. Art takes precedent. Kubrick IS cinematic art.

THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION

I wanted to point out that while this moriarty guy is right about the next generation being affected by beauty of video aka hi8mm used in the BWProject, I think he's way off the mark about this film starting some sort of wave. In fact, the revolution has already begun. The digital revolution, that is. Films like B.Miller's docu "The Cruise," T.Vinterberg's "The Celebration," L.Von Trier's "The Idiots" and other movies made with digital video like "The Last Broadcast," have more than gotten the ball rolling. In fact, I just saw Hal Hartley's "Book of Life," an hour long feature shot on miniDV and then blown up to 35mm. It was beautiful and brilliant. People are starting to realise that your story/script, acting, etc., are more important than what format you shoot on! So please, do yourself a favor: buy a SonyVX-1000 digital video camera, install Digital Origin's MotoDV capture card with firewire plus Adobe Premiere 5.1 into your mac and go make your movie. BECAUSE YOU'RE EITHER WATCHING THEM OR YOU'RE MAKING THEM!!!

One of the greatest film makers in the world died this weekend...so? Does that mean life has to stop, Lane? Films will get made, people will be born, and you will continue to bore us with your personal, frustrated filmmaker agenda. I am sad that Kubrick has died because I will never see his version of Eyes Wide Shut but that doesn't mean the world (in general or the world of movies) doesn't go on! Good call on reporting this, Harry!
TRUE horror

I'd have to place 'Blair Witch Project' high on my list of must-see films of '99. It's not very often that I feel compelled to see a film based solely on a write-up, but I really can't wait to see this. I'm always bitching about the lack of REAL horror films out there... Among the films I've experienced that genuinely made my heart race, made me sweat, made me grip the arms of my chair - this list would include The Exorcist, Amityville Horror, Hellraiser (to an extent... I was mainly _horrified_ by it), The Shining, Poltergeist (this blew my then-11 year-old mind!), the atmosphere of Nosferatu and Dracula, Silence of the Lambs, and I've probably forgotten one or two others. I can't tell you how UNscary and non-threatening most so-called 'horror' movies are, IMHO. Most are filled with obvious and cheap 'frights', such as having someone jumping out of the silence, or maybe a lame gross-out scene. Of course, these are the movies that contain the one-liners and stupid characters that Moriarty refered to. Blair Witch Project sounds as though it might be what I've been waiting for.

I haven't looked at Kubrick article yet, but I heard it last night on the SAG Awards show. I look in minute. RE BWP, the web page is great. You can read Heather's journal and it shows it in her own handwriting. Reading it gives you a very creepy feeling. I can only imagine how the film makes you feel. And the whole site makes it look like this really happened. For a while I thought maybe it did. Do we have any idea when this will be released? Anyone?

The website says sometime this summer in the news category and I went to some release date site and it said June I think. The BWP website says they just cut a trailer for the movie but don't know what it will be attached to. Anyway, I would think that website would be the first to give a certain date, then this one.
Oops.

Well I guess if I had read more carefully, I could have found out about the date. Too impatient on my part. I'll keep more of a look out there. Thanks.

The release dates are as follows: July 16 (limited release) and July 30 (wide release). BTW, I visited the official site (www.blairwitch.com) after reading Moriarty's article, and I am now so drawn in by the potential greatness/scariness/coolness of this film that I can't believe I hadn't heard of it prior to today. I must've been sleeping! Check out the site to see some vidclips, read the making of journal. Good stuff!
BLAIR WITCH

I just watched Blair Witch Project. Maybe I was a victim of the hype but I did not find this to be "... among the most frightening films ever made..." as Moriarity declares. I know I'm setting myself up for a spanking, but I just didn't feel it. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but I just felt that while the intensity was there (and it was) the payoff wasn't. Don't get me wrong, this IS a good (if not great) film. It IS a must see. One of the best jobs of storytelling I've seen in a long time, just not the most terrifying. In all honesty, I thought JAWS was a more terrifying film. My advice is, don't let you imagination run wild before you see it (like I did.) Maybe then it will work better for you than it did me...but definately see it.
That's what I afraid of....

I've been thinking the same thing. That I'm going to get all hyped up for this thing and then when it's over, I'll be really let down. I've read the journal on the Haxan home page, and it was creepy. I do keep thinking the film is going to have a very claustrophobic feeling, and personally, I HATE that. But at this point, with all the teen horror films that have recently come down the pike, I'm ready for something different. Only problem with knowing a lot about a film so far in advance is that when I do see it I'm already over it. Here's hoping that's not the case.

I have seen the movie two times. I am very much into scary movies I try to buy all of them. I try to see all of them too. I think the movie was good. But it needed to be a bit more scary. It makes you use your imagination a bit too much. They need to end the movie with the police and all trying to find the three students, and them actually finding the footage they had taped. I still enjoyed it. It was excellent by being different.
