I love that book, the indian mafia is so interesting, and since my whole family is from mumbai...I want the rest of the world to see the sharp contrast which is described in the novel.

Weddings, women and men fascinated with each other? Monsoons. Yeah I lightly gleaned this interview, but what I got was basically this woman is interested in putting an audience to sleep in record breaking time. And turning down Natalie Portman, is basically a work of the Devil in my opinion. You turn down Portman, you slap God in the face. That's how I equate it.
Shantaram is much more interesting than the namesake

My mom, like all indian women, loves the namesake. She recently met the author of the book in calcutta, and was a bit starstruck.

There is a big rumour in the indian american community that Kal Penn is really gay. Why does every famous actor have to be gay?

Every famous actor doesn't have to be gay, it just has to be rumored that they are gay. And as we all know from reading the internet, all rumors are 101% Truth.

Mira Nair seems very intelligent, I'll have to check out this film. I also want to see if Kal Penn can pull off a straight role - his bit part in 24 this season didn't do anything for me.

. . . was one of the most amazing books I've ever read, but seriously, it was about 1000 pages long! How on earth they're going to make one film out of that text I have no idea. Maybe they kan just "Kill Bill" it?

Capone outdoes himself once again.

I am a huge Bollywood freak so of course I will be there to see this one... I only hope it'll be nice and LONG! If it's under 3 hours I feel a little gypped, you know... I guess I'm open to Kal Penn in a serious role, although I personally would have far preferred Abhishek Bachchan, I think he's one hell of a great actor (even in flawed films like K A N K) and more than ready to cross over to Hollywood.

Anyway this director seems amazingly thoughtful, forthcoming and free of phoniness , what an ideal interview subject.

And oh yeah

In terms of films about Desi families overseas that don't conform to feel-good stereotypes, anyone else see Dominic Savage's "Love + Hate," a kind of immigrant Romeo & Juliet, set in Northern England?

Very rich and disturbing, a far cry from simplistic stuff like "I... Proud to Be an Indian" (which wasn't a bad movie, but pretty goofy)

i love Depp, but he sure doesnt look like the Shantaram fellow. Not only does he need to seriously get bigger muscles, he needs at least a big fake nose, that man is not very cute looking. having said that, i have no doubts he can get the character right. and it is one great story. indian mafia, indian prison, the slums, fighting in the mountains of afghanistan, the hashassins, its like modern day Kipling.

If you haven't checked out the trailer for The Namesake yet, you should, particularly if you enjoyed hearing the clever and intelligent words of Mira Nair. It looks really tremendous, and from reading ths I think she will continue to make films that are going to resonate strongly in this globalized world we live in. I love that she really wants to delve into the genuine implications of East meets West. Cool.

Abhishek Bachchan might have been interesting, but given traditional Bollywood's more theatrical, dare I say it, bombastic style of acting, maybe a Bollywood star wouldnt have been a good idea for a story that's more intimate and personal, like the Namesake? Plus, as anybody who knows Bollywood knows, you can't deny all that stuff she says about stars having issues giving directors enough time for movies etc. What do you think?
Potter & Portman?!?

What a terrible career decisions. Turning down Potter makes some sense, as she would be in over her head, but Portman? Foolish. Give her a freakin' blonde wig, whoop-dee-do! At this point I don't think I'd want this overrated director to even touch either anyways. The Namesake has always been seen as unrealistic and pedestrian fluff, and the trailer proved it isn't reaching to be anything more than the forgettable dramas we saw every week in the early '90s.
