The only reason I would ever see this is Kurt Russell. Tarantino has long since become a parody of himself. His work peaked with Jackie Brown - after that he's just trading on the same old riffs. He's basically the directorial equivalent of Status Quo.

Grindhouse flicks were exploitation flicks of the late '60s through to the early/mid '80s. Small theaters that would run the sleaziest stuff, sexploitation, blaxploitation, chop sockey, horror (with a slant to Italian horror)... anything low budget with a high entertainment value... and willing to push the limits. I forgot to mention CRIPPLED MASTERS, a trailer that ran with BOSS NIGGER, THEY CALL HER ONE EYE and THE GREEN SLIME... kind of like kung fu FREAKS. It's an amazing movie and an amazing trailer.

You probably had a fleapit which was sort of the British equivalent and they mostly showed soft porn. But they all but vanished in the UK in mid eighties. I remeber two cinemas in Leeds. One was the Plaza and it showed mainly porn but did show the uncut Evil Dead. The other was the Tower that had great double bills for a pound but a lot of these were mainstream films but very old beat up prints. Having said that I went to "The Giant Spider Invasion" & "Carquake" on a double bill at the Odeon. Back in the days when you could sit in there all day for one admission price. We came in halfway through "Carquake" and waited until it came round again to watch the beginning. I'm not that nostalgic for it but that's my memories of the english equivalent.

There really hilarious part was that the sitting Tory MP and cabinet minister Virgina Bottomly(of which there was once a very famous anagram) called for Cronenbergs movie to be banned, when she was asked did she see the movie she said no and when the head of london borough council was asked did he see it he said and he still called for the movie to be banned. video nasties were banned after two kids called Thompson and veneables murder a toddler. But, in the hysteria no one mentioned that these two kids came from broken homes. Daily mail readers were outraged in sufficient numbers to get these videos banned and remain banned. In ireland Natural born killers was given an outright ban and Bad Santa was pulled from all irish cinema chains. I saw it dvd and it was mediocre. BAN THIS SICK FLICK!!!

Had some of the best deaths ever in it. He dropped a guy slowly feet first into an industrial meat grinder, and another was shot in the groin with poisoned bullets after he was found keeping a naked young man trussed up like a gimp on a bed. Thats the sort of character building films that 10 year olds should watch. I watched them and I turned out fine. Just the other day I tracked down the online be-heading of some hostages and I wasnt fazed in the slightest! Bring on the de-sensitisation. :)

Most of the films that were banned in the UK were banned long before the James Bulger case. In fact the only thing that linked the James Bulger case to a video was that one of the famlies had a copy of "Childs Play" and that wasn't banned as a result. A list was drwan up around 1982 that then, right wing, Thatcher government found objectionable. This included the films Col Tigh-Fighter mentioned and saw Police raiding video shops and siezing "Apocalypse Now" thinking it was "Cannibal Apocalyspse". It was a storm kicked up in right wing newspapers and resulted the Video Classification laws for home video that are still in place today in the UK. Most of the films are available now and are uncut and are also shit. Thanks Maggie for keeping me on the straight and narrow.

QT relies far too much on his winning formula - counterculture homages to 70s ex/blax/ploitation surrounded by obscure songs of the period. I admit it can be very cool. But I want to see QT do something else. Jackie Brown was, very nearly, a 'proper' film - a departure for him. And it succeeded on every level. I'd like to see him really stretch his directing muscles. Do something offbeat. Off the wall. The thing is, QT is actually an inspired director - I've seen Tarantino produce some truly lovely shots. Remember when Christ Tucker gets bundled in the car in a parking lot, in Jackie Brown? And the camera moves up is a slow arc as the car drives off, and we see over the fence as the car pulls up 500 yards away, Sam gets out, opens the trunk, and pops Tucker? That was a beautiful shot, the best Tarantino's ever managed IMHO. I'd love to see QT use this sort of sensibility for it's own sake. But QT the director gets completely swamped by QT the film buff and QT the dialog writer, and we end up with Kill Bill, a muddled epic that could have been so much more if he hadn't've let his (and our) expectations of what a QT film should be color the result.

The Dead won't die was really lame. These film makers now think it's not "pushing the envelope" if some woman is not being raped by a cannibal or now zombies. I mean does the Hills Have Eyes 2 really need another cannibal rape scene? We had the scene in the Wes Craven Original so they felt obligated to put it in the remake,nut now the sequel? What gives, no originality? No ideas of what it really takes to shock and scare people so they go to one thing they now will upset most everybody. Losers. Anyways when Maiden started I was thinking Crow rip off but it got alot better as the trailer went on, and Hobo was just freaking awesome. Hobo should be made into a feature with Maiden as a double bill.

I never met QT, but I'm only a few years younger and from the same area of LA and had the same cool taste/lack of taste in movies so we may have been in some of the same "grindhouses" in our teens. I don't remember anybody ever calling them grindhouses or grindhouse movies before this movie, which I'm dying to see. I used to go to the Jerry Lewis Twin (Jerry Lewis invented the multi-plex! Hey, lay-dee! Nice lay-dee!). A lot of grindhouse is simply fun, exploitation things that would be straight-to-DVD today. It's like the indoor version of a drive-in-movie except that it cost less, you didn't have a car, and as a homophobic teen, you could go with your buddy without getting gay bashed. And you didn't have to be old enough to drive. You could hip a matinee or two or six. We're talking low budget violent and sexy movie with a certain attitude and lower level stars. Like ENTER THE DRAGON might have a mainstream audience but a million other martial arts flicks would show only at the grindhouse. THE EXORCIST and THE OMEN would show mainstream but MAUSOLEUM (with literally killer, demon tits) would show at a grindhouse. I like the escape-from-rednecks/redneck cops genre (those are scary; those of you from foreign lands, you might think you know what a real American redneck is but unfortunately, they're less stupid and even meaner than you can imagine)and the grindhouse western. If I could make a grindhouse movie, I'd make a western. My favorite grindhouse western (despite the presence of Henry Fonda) is MY NAME IS NOBODY. As a 70s kid, I hated westerns. All my friends hated westerns. But we all liked Nobody. There was also one where all these Asian babes got parts of a treasure map tattooed to their asses and a samurai or something teamed up a gunfighter to track them through the brothels of the old west and look at their asses until they found the treasure. I remember my friends and I agreed:"Treasure-smeasure, we'd just look at their asses!" I think no matter where you live, before the rise of the video store you had these kind of movies in these kind of theaters, in one form or another, it just depends on what you call 'em.

If you liked HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, and you probably did, get your hands on the Canadian TV series TRAILER PARK BOYS and the recent feature film version just released on DVD - there's several TRAILER PARK BOYS cast members in HOBO. Relatively unknown in the US, TPB ran for a while on BBC America in a censored version but is long-gone from their lineup. Fuck all that - censored TRAILER PARK BOYS is like censored porn, it totally misses the point. Excessive profanity, alcoholism, drug and cheeseburger abuse, gunplay, and general stupidity abound, all mixed with a surprising amount of affection and compassion for its cast of losers - Americans are missing out on this big-time. HBO should have picked it up but it's probably too low-budget for them these days. The movie version was produced by Ivan Reitman and while it falls slightly short of the TV show's level of quality, it's still the single best thing his name's been attached to since God knows when. Beware the Winds Of Shit, and try to stay out of jail... unless it's absolutely necessary.

Hi All, I was the writer and director of "The Dead Won't Die" trailer and I just wanted to say how much we appreciated the kind words and support. We were bummed out that we didn't get our trailer on youtube quick enough to get it mentioned on AICN when the trailers first started popping up....so this is awesome to be mentioned in a post. It truly was an honor to be selected a finalist in the competition with such great work as Hobo and Maiden of Death....and the filmmakers from both of them were great guys too...it was great to meet them here at SXSW. It was amazing to see how big of fans of the genre we all were and how passionate everybody was about doing something cool. Hopefully we all get a chance to turn some of these ideas into features and make some cool stuff. Anyway, thanks to AICN for posting this and we appreciate everyone's support. How'd it work out that the filmmakers of the only three that were shown were actually in Austin? Wasn't Hobo from Canada? Did they fly down just in case, or did you guys get a heads up...?

can't remember its name..but that for me came second after hobo with a shotgun... hobo got it so righton..how many times I saw a trailer exactly like that growing up at the start of some low budget action film i rented.....it is perfect and should be on grindhouse...its genius

...of all the entries, there wasn't one sent in that was better than the Youtube listings? Seriously? Did they get swamped and just gave up? The Circus one and Hollywood Cannibal Hookers(?), were more authentic then Hobo, which was a flat-out parody. And when did an Avid system become the grand prize? I never heard that before. This contest was really disorganized. I feel bad for the people who put time and effort in. This should have been run like the Hills Have Eyes 2 contest which gave exposure to all entries and then picked a winner.

I came over from London to meet the other trailer-makers as we all got on so well online and all shared the same mental production experience. MASSIVE props to Thomas for our midnight screening (and his brilliant film YOUR DARKNESS IS MY PLAYGROUND) at the 501 Soundstage! And big respect to the Hobos: Jason, Rob, John; Kevin (top geeza and best tracking shot of the whole competition in "ADIOS, LOBO"), Don (my giallo brother), Christian (and his whole TANK gang), the JESUS RISES crew (most blasphemous/outrageous award goes to them), QUEEN'S OF THE STREET, STRAW HAT MASTER, and everyone else I hung out with. Jet-lagged from the flight back, so can't remember everyone I should be saying hello to!?....Austin is the single most intensely cine-literate place on Earth......I'll be back...
