I am more than ready to begin calling myself a comic-book geek again, dammit. I had hoped the new DARK TOWER series would lead to that... but two issues in and my uberKing-geekness is overriding any chance of it, given the relative weakness of the writing (it's like a bad high-school fanfic voice trying to imitate King, dammit -- even the gorgeous art can't override the sloppy storytelling). The new BUFFY book, however, sounds too damned good to be true. Will begin haunting the local comics shop Wednesday, by jaysus...

Wish they'd revived the Master or even the Anointed One again for Season 7. Spike was made into a gushing good guy, and the great Drusilla/Darla reunion was was wasted by the idiocy of Angel's pre-season 5 story arc, so decent vampire heavies were a thing of the past on Buffy by its last season. And after two seasons of crappy big bads (Adam and Glory sucked and not in the vampire way), and the sad demise of the great Nerds of Doom, the last season was really lame without a colorful villain. Although it was nice that it gave Nathan Fillion more work after the shitheads at Fox made him unemployed, but that's a whole other sad rant.

let's hope only good things happen on her 10th anniversary! I came to the show late, because frankly, the movie sucked so bad, but I became a huge fan of it once I got into it and realized how damn good it really was; the humor, the drama, the pop-culture bliss! (And thanks to FX for letting me watch all of the eps I missed!) I can't wait for season eight...

So, does that mean we'll find out what happened that fateful night years ago on the finale? Obviously they survived, but will we get details? Did Illyria make any funny, insightful statements on the human condition by asking a dry question? Did Gunn die? Does Wesley Wyndham-Price go to hell for having sex outside of marriage? So many questions!

...in fact, I even gave up having cable or even watching any TV from about 1996 to about 2002 or so. But the Tuesday morning that Buffy S1 was released on DVD, I was in a mood to spend (read: waste) a lot of money, so I bought it 'cause I have a bunch of friends who told me Buffy was so good.

Favorite. Series. Ever.

I ended buying up every season that came out, the day they hit the shelves. I moved on to buying all the Angel sets when they hit, too. Then Firefly came out - got it. I so got sucked into the Whedonverse, gladly and willfully. I even named my first son Xander.

Yeah, she's got inspirational CDs or something too, I think. Makes the Prince-penned '51 Hours' promo track that she sang on with 'Diamond' all the more hilarious (but bad. Very very bad. Not something for listening enjoyment). And it absolutely is Amy, but...and I can't remember where...I thought I saw reference to her 'boyfriend' or something too. I don't know who that is.
Wouldn't Angel and Spike have smelled it's not Buffy?
by Shan
Mar 10th, 2007
08:20:46 PM
I never got a handle on how close vampires had to be to be able to identify a smell. I can't say I care for how they're effectively retconning an Angel episode in this way (since we're never going to see a resolution to it on screen involving the characters from Angel).
Shan.
by CatVutt
Mar 10th, 2007
08:27:42 PM
I thought of that too, but frankly, there's multiple instances of inconsistancies with the whole smell thing throughout the series. Think Season 4 and Cordy's slaugher of Manny. She supposedly stripped down to do it and then got dressed, and woke up Angel? He should've smelled the blood all over her, which would've tipped them all way before they ever brought Angelus back. (One of many things that never made sense in that season, but I digress.) As far as the retcon though, I actually like this one because it's explained that it was Andrew's specific idea to hook her up with The Immortal, which puts a great spin on it, for me.

that Buffy and the whole Slayer squad would have showed up at the end of Angel and helped Angel, Spike and everyone else out in the LA Apocalypse, basically showing Buffy's change of heart about Angel working for Wolfram & Hart. How badass would THAT have been? Buffy leading the rest of the girls with the rest of the slayers standing on rooftops, Goddess Willow doing some glowy thing and what-not. It's either Sid the Dummy or the praying mantis lady's kids. Remember the end of that episode? It showed the unhatched eggs under the desk in the science lab but there was never any follow up to that. There's a possibility that those eggs survived the destruction of Sunnydale, I'll be it, a small one.

I rike you. You make me raff. =) I'm still excited, despite learning Amy's the early lead for Big Bad (never cared much for her on the show, though that brief rat-to-Amy-back-to-rat moment in S4 was freakin brilliant). But I'm with whomever noted above that she'd probably working for (or the unwitting pawn of) some other TRUE Big Bad. Amy's nasty... but she doesn't really have the stuff to take on the Slayers and Nu-Willow. I wouldn't mind seeing her carve Andrew's weenie ass a bit, though. And I truly do NOT want to see anyone from ANGEL now; if there's no time/room to deal with that epic series finale in detail, better to leave it hanging altogether. I do like the idea of Buff and the Slayers descending en masse and saving the day... but that would mean Angel, Spike et al being central to the new comics, and that's WAY too many characters to serve properly. Especially with Dawn taking up a full page every three or whatever, now that she's all huge-ful. Bring it on!!

Wow, and I thought fundamental Christians were meant to be the kneejerk-y bigoted ones!

How can you possibly say that Seasons 4 through (the first half of) 6 were the "heyday" of the show?? Season 2 hands down the definitive season of the series. Personally, I'm not one of those fans who found so much to dislike in any particular season that they feel compelled to say "this one sucked" or "they should have stopped at ___." I love every season. However, I really thought S4 was the most disorganized, the most awkward run out of the series. (I mean... the Initiative? The Psych professor as an undercover military agent?? And... Adam??? Adam had to be by FAR the weakest, worst idea for a villain in the entire Buffyverse.) 5 was a great comeback (especially "The Body" - one of the greatest episodes of ANY TV show ever, IMO,) and I loved Glory as a villain, though I believe I'm in a minority on that. But most people would concede that S6, as wild as it got from time to time was remarkable for its sheer silliness. Some of its episodes were BtVS at its finest (Seeing Red, Once More With Feeling, of course, and Life Serial is a personal favorite,) but it was at that point that you just knew the show wasn't the same as it was before. So again, I ask... how can you say that was the heyday of the series?
But didn't it AnnoyYou?
by Arguendo

First off -- I do not attest to the *quality* of the shows I'm mentioning here, just that they exist (and their prevalence). It's hard to call anything iconoclastic -- almost everything these days has precedents. However, the show did set the stage for an innumerable number of additional shows on network TV (of varying quality) -- Roswell, 4400, Smallville, Supernatural, Alias, Tru Calling, Charmed, and most likely today's Medium and Ghost Whisperer. (For the record, I never followed any of those shows, so feel free to try to shoot me down on any one of them.) The overall impact was to mainstream sci-fi / fantasy (and strong female action leads). This was definitely out there before (X-files, Millenium, Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks, Sabrina the Teenage Witch -- which actually spawned a plethora of sci-fi fantasy on ABC which almost all immediately failed), but most of those did not have quite the lasting impact as Buffy seemed to. And people seem to have the perspective -- they're excited about a new story arc. So it's not a new television season, but calling it season 8 is simpler than calling it "story arc 8" (although the number of syllables is the same). Plus, that's how it is being billed so it simply makes sense to reference it that way.
I liked Glory as a villain...

Once they graduated high school I think the show lost some of its luster. Don't get me wrong. There were some great episodes to follow. I just think that the show started to lose direction. Season four had the Intiative and Adam. What kind of villian is this clown? Season five had the Glory and Dawn storyline. Sorry Dawn fans she should have ended her storyline that season. Nice actress but nothing to do for seasons 6 and 7 except whine. I won't even discuss season 7. I honestly think one thing that hurt the show was Giles not being around that much. I know it was an actors decision but I think his presence was important to the show and affected it greatly. Like I said the best seasons were 1-3.

I actually took the view that everything that happened in Buffy (in total) and Angel upto the end of Season 4 was manipulated to bring Jasmine into existence. Every single character and event were manipulated over presumably countless ages. The 4 series of Angel were basically the end run of this plan. Season 1 - bring Darla back. Season 2 - get Darla pregnant by Angel. Season 3 - get Connor born, Cordelia into the higher planes. Season 4 - get Cordelia back, pregnant by Connor and get the doorway open. Buffy had moments of earlier events getting everyone lined up into position such as Darla, Angel, Spike, Drusila and who knows how many others. The way I see it, I like to think that the Senior Partner quietly nudged things at the end of Season 4 and brought the whole thing off the rails in short order. Season 5's premise was a stroke of genius - gradually compromise Angel's principles over time and then co-opt him. The return of Cordelia was great as it showed how much everyone had changed in such a short time. I still feel the show was only one season away from ending anyway and that it's a tragedy that Season 6 wasn't made to wrap things up on their own terms and pace.

i miss this tv series. never watched it when it first cam out, i thought it was a series for high school kids / girls. i beleive it was on season 5 when i actually caught an old epsiode ( the dracula ep) on tv. i found t hilarious and well writen, and started chasing all the epsiodes, brought all the dvd series for buffy and angel and dammit i miss the universe. i used to be a big comic nerd, but i cant see myself picking up the series maybe a graphic novel collection. we need a new buffyverse series on tv dammit, all the programs on air at the moment are the same and full of eventual dissapointment. buffy and angel had constant good eps. yeah true, a couple fo them were dodgy, and one of 2 seeason went off on a bit of a tangent. but my god what two great series to look back on and get. I rarly buy dvds. truth be told i usually download torrents. but those sereies were so good i just had to buy them on dvd.

Outside of Joss, Peter David is probably the best Angel comic writer. At least when it comes to Spike. His first oneshot and the Spike vs Dracula series were great, as was the Illyria one-shot. The rest have been uneven, imo. In the older Buffy series, Nicieza's take on the Buffyverse was the best. The series set just before the time of the tv show (which, ironically, was the end of the comic) was the best and most like the show, with great metaphors for the emotions around divorce. The early Buffy comics were pretty lightweight crap, though. And Robia La Morte isn't batshit insane 'just' because she speaks at born again rallies. She's batshit insane because, well, because she is. If you've ever read any of her blogs or 'messages' to her fans, you'll know what I'm talking about.

It was clever how they introduced her, because it's such a TV show cliche to bring in the younger cousin or sister, but they made work. Too bad the character wasn't done well enough to justify the extra character. Whoever mentioned Oz coming back probably hit the nail on the head. I'm looking forwad to this.

"Don't you wish I would?" When She Was Bad, is a terribly under rated episode. This show was the start of me making appointment television and realizing what can be achieved through the medium with arcs. Goddamn if seasons 2-3 aren't some incredible television (Not that the others are bad), and seasons 2-4 of Angel.
The current post-finale Angel comic is NOT canon...

This has been stated by Joss himself. So yeah, it may nto be great, but it doesn't need to be, it's not officially continuing what happened after the show. This comic will however. Also, I know for season 6 of Angel they were discussing bringing Oz back as a foil for Nina, and were going to have Illyria split into two entities, one as Illyria, and one as Fred (which sounds absolutely terrible, and I'd like to hope this idea was merely a one-note suggestion that wouldn't have developed).
it seems a lot of people didn't care for season 5

of Angel. Personally that has to be one of my favorite seasons. It's defiantly one of the most funny to say the least. Muppet Angel, the Caveman vs Spaceman running gag, the trip to Italy. The inclusion of Spike really amped up the season for me. Also Wesley losing Fred ONLY AFTER HE FINALLY GOT WITH HER!! Proving once again the guy never got a fucking break the whole series. Great season. And a great series. But that's just MHO

though my favorite Wolverine scenes were 1)a closeup shot of Wolverine smelling a can of beer and remembering who he is after he'd been brainwashed into thinking he was a prissy little boy, 2) and Wolverine silently looking back and forth at Peter and Kitty while sniffing. Then he says 'bout time'. Great shorthand to tell us that Peter and Kitty have finally done the deed. And I love what's he done with Lockheed. Not sure about this Breakworld stuff though.

Whedon's X-Men comics are great, but I've narrowed it down to either Amy's mom, the Invisible girl (who was Clea DuVall, last seen in Heroes) or Owen, the boy who Buffy almost got killed on her first date. He might drop by to catch her up on what he's been doing and almost get killed again. I expect their dialog to probably be 2 or 3 words, short, funny and right to the point. Quinessential Whedon.

I actually buy from Marvel these days. Anyone who doesn't feel like going out to the comic book shop should just wait for the trades. Anyone who just doesn't like the medium of comics should check out Scalped. It's pretty much an HBO series in comic form. Except it's even better.

I kept on saying to everyone that Willow was going to be the the main villian for the seventh season. I was absolutely certain of it. Too bad, because that would have had a lot of potential.

And yeah, Season 1 is still pretty rocky, a decade later. Funny, though, and clever as hell. Still, I'm looking forward to reaching Season 2, and settling in for a whole lotta REAL stabby-vampy fun...

...Spike sucked in the latter seasons of Buffy. He was a phenomenal villain when first introduced, but when he became the creepy/lovesick/stalkerish date-rapist, I lost all interest in him and, because she seemed to enjoy the weirdness, in Buffy. And I maintain that Spike's best appearances have been on Angel (his first, where he was MST3King an alley rescue, was priceless). The character really came into his own during Angel's 5th season and redeemed that show for me (I was getting ready to drop it after the Cordy/Connor/ridiculously-crap py-Jasmine arc). So I've really got no interest in revisiting Buffy. Giles? Sure. Xander? Yeah...I'd be very curious to see how he's adjusting to life after Sunnydale. Willow? Lesbian wtichiness is always good with me. But Buffy bores the shit out of me and has pretty much since she came back from the dead.

Balfour played Jessie and he's on the list of people who aren't possible candidates for a return. Besides, he got dusted. Not that he stopped a vampire, but I don't see anyone going through elaborate rituals to bring back Jessie.

Speaking of which, are any of the existing trade paperbacks worth getting (the updated origin story books, altered to fit the series' continuity etc etc). Basically, is there any more history of the party of 4 (angelus, spike, darla and dru - badasses limited)?

I liked Buffy and Angel all the way to the end. Liked Firefly too. Give me a new show to like Joss. Although I wouldn't mind one last vampire movie/miniseries before everyone (including Joss) gets too old. They ended things well, but I'll take all the good TV I can get.
