Considering the fascist undertones of 300, Synder's Watchmen will probably cast Rorschach and The Comedian as the real heroes and Nite Owl et al will probably be viewed as snivelling do-gooders... Oh, and any Watchmen film better have All Along the Watchtower and Desolation Row on the soundtrack.

I just got back from a midnight screening of 300 and they totally ruined it. Snyder went Hollywood with his sappy plot lines involving the son and wife and the crappy dialog. Some was cool, grant you but...."I am honored to die at your side???" What is that. Who cares about his wife and son and the tooth around his neck. I paid $11 to see some asswhoppin' not try to get some crappy tears from the audience. BLLLAAAHHHHHH. I hate HOLLYWOOD!!

by JimmyLoneWolf
Mar 9th, 2007
05:38:22 AM
...so I know how risky this endeavor will be, but if it comes off we could be looking at a MAJOR publicity-booster for graphic novels. V for Vendetta wasn't bad, but it wasn't the right project to "revolutionize" the public's perception of the art form. Watchmen could be exactly that, if its done right, and I for one think Snyder may well pull this off. I have one criteria for the film: that it encourages people to read the graphic novel. It doesn';t have to be a perfect translation, it just has to be interesting enough to convey the innovation and complexity of the original work. V for Vendetta didn't do that in my opinion, even though it worked well as a stand-alone film. But I've got my fingers crossed for this...and that picture is drool-inducing!

How can anyone doubt that Snyder will do it!? It looks freaking sweet!! Sure the black texture on the mask isn´t perfectly clear, but it´s going in the right direction. The moody atmosphere, the colours, the character himself is already perfect. What remains is the casting, dialouge and of course the plot. Snyder seems he has made up his mind that some parts of Watchmen are best suited for dvd extendet editions. I don´t like that idea, but if he does the cinematic release right, I´m more than happy.

...but this is! True, I doubt anyone can do this complete justice at all but I can't see Snyder as being anything near being up for the job other that in simply replicating images from the comic in a very glib and obvious fashion. This is the guy, remember, that chose to strip away all of the political and satirical content from 'Dawn of the Dead' - it simply isn't where his head's at. He's a lightweight. A flashy, snappy, 'knows-how-move-the-camera-aro und-and-use-CGI' lightweight, but a lightweight all the same. You simply don't give the most amazing, revolutionary comic book concept, one which redefined and took a massive step further towards exactly what comics had always promised and could be, to someone who has no clue how to then transform the corresponding film genre in kind. Story, Snyder, Levy, Whedon now off Wonder Woman, some guy who does direct to DVD for Hulk 2, Mark Steven Johnson....jeez what happened?? The game's up kids - pray to Nolan for salvation...!
Watchmen can't work as a film!
by Handsprings
Mar 9th, 2007
05:13:54 PM
The biggest undertones in the watchmen deal with comic book myths and cliches. And while these are fun while you're reading they're all reinforced by the face YOU ARE READING A COMIC. So much would be lost in a film adaptation. Much like V for Vendetta was a book about Anarchy while the film was about Democracy. it's not there. No more films of good books. please!
The total irony here: Alan Moore WILL HATE the movie
by Triumph poops!
Mar 9th, 2007
07:53:12 PM
The image seems fine for all that it is...which is simply a VERY basic image. So it just seems a bit premature to see ONE incredibly SIMPLE shot and now be ecstatically jerking off in a chair yelling "Snyder's the man! He's the only one who can do it!"

Of course while AICN talkbackers or comic geeks will get all excited about the movie, the actual irony here is that Alan Moore himself has always been very outspoken about how his creations have been translated to the screen, right down to completely washing his hands of them or outright labeling them bastardizations of his vision.

Which just seems ironic to me that fanboys will get all excited about this still or cheer on the movie, yet the guy who actally CREATED the property is sitting at home stewing that they're even making this thing...

You're 100% correct. Snyder is a lightweight. All the interesting subtext of the original DAWN OF THE DEAD is gone in the 2004 remake. The remake is just about people trying to escape zombies. That's it, nothing more.

The greatest graphic novel/comic book in history, which is layer upon layer of subtext might be directed by.............Zack Snyder? GodDAMN I hope 300 fails miserably so he is off WATCHMEN.

Alan Moore hates EVERY movie
by SpyGuy
Mar 9th, 2007
09:43:11 PM
I can understand being pissed about LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, but I thought FROM HELL was fairly solid. The problem is, Alan Moore is too much of a nutter recluse to even try to work with the directors of these films to help them become something better than they end up without any of his involvement.

And no WATCHMEN movie will ever be "perfect" enough to satisfy Moore or any of the hardcore fanboys who feel the maxi-series is "unfilmable." It IS filmable, but if an imperfect film that performs huge at the box office helps sell a lot of WATCHMEN trade paperbacks to people that normally wouldn't bother to pick up a graphic novel, then that's a good thing. So everyone, especially Alan Moore, needs to take the stick out. Right fucking now.

From Hell was a terrible adaptation.
by superninja

It was Hollywood pap that took no risks. From Hell is a terrifying work and the filmmakers probably ended up having to restrain it because if they had done it correctly, it would've been too disturbing.

It's about loss of innocence and what a mess humanity is. Snyder might have been okay for a superficial work like 300 but he doesn't get Watchmen, I'd bet money. But do we even need Watchmen when they can't even make a funny Spider-Man film? They've already Watchmened-lite Spider-Man. We need the anti-Watchmen before we have the Watchmen.

"300" is not a good film. It has a lot of really cool shots stitched together with a derivative, silly narrative. He added to Miller's work without adding anything to it. Hey rip off the X-Men and many comic book plots throughout the years, and they never give any credit. It woudln't surprise me at all if they ripped off Watchmen. There is very little original about show.
Watchmen wasn't exactly original

I loved Watchmen and hope the movie is decent. But it was a rip-off of the Outer Limits episode "Architects of Fear" staring Robert Culp. Although, I don't believe it was intentional.

Actor (Zack Ward),the kid that was Ralphy's bully,AKA(Scut Farkus) in A Christmas Story all grown up. and also played on Tidus, looks just like Rorschach to me because they are both red heads, obviously, and ward looks to be in great shape and I think he has the phisical prowess and acting skills to play the charecter.I think he is the perfect choice for the part. Please, let me know what you think, and be gentle.

DannyOcean01,you also have made another perfect casting choice! No other person can play creppy like Doug Hutchison . this guy. He was Eugene Tombs aka the strechman on the Xfiles and can speak in a perfect monotone voice. I think we have a winner!

Mask made of threaded cloth?

This early pic of Rorshach's face bothers me though, it wasn't the clearly pure black&white heat sensitive moving mask it should be. The white is too dull and it just looks like standard threaded cloth, even if they animate it. If I remember correctly the comic describes it as something more dynamic, like an oil and milk lava lamp type liquid encased in plastic, after all he finds he has to cut it with heated scissors to re-seal the edges as he goes. this may not have meant it was liquid between large sheets of plastic, but perhaps could be interpreted as liquid trapped within the fiber (I can't remember the exact wording, but i'm more inclined to think it implies the former tbh). Either way this doesn't look right to me. and I'd expect better from the man who made such a detailed translation of sin city, especially for such a pinicle character.
Dude, it's just a test shot, not a production shot
