I'll say this, if the last episode is truly the end of Starbuck, then this show is done and over and should be cancelled. I suspect it's not. But if it is, they're just running out of ideas for this show. All that crap about "her destiny" and this is it? Note to Hollywood: QUIT FOLLOWING THE "LOST" FORMULA!!!!!! It doesn't work. Stop showing angles that do nothing to forward the overall story.

B/C Lost just keeps piling on question after question with nary a satisfactory resolution, whereas BSG is built in such a way that there aren't too many questions to be answered and they ABSOLUTELY don't have to have Cylons in every episode. I've been fine with most of the "standalone" eps. I actually liked the Helo ep. Not so much Malestrom, only b/c the were kinda spinning their wheels a little, but NONE of the characters are so stupid as they are on LOST where they pass up any opportunity to grow their character, or develop the plot. On BSG they call each other out whenever they do something out of the ordinary. If you asked me who I would rather place my faith in to end their series in a satisfactory manner, I choose Moore cause his track record TNG, DS9 is better than Abrams-Alias, Felicity, Mission Impossible.

It'd be easy to "bring her back" or have her in another dimension/thousands of light years away/forwards or backwards in time/elevated into a higher being or plane of consciousness/sucked into a wormhole/revealed to be a cylon (and would, of course, re-generate) and/or a cylon-human hybrid or WHATEVER. (frankly, we've seen it all and it's been done to death!) If SF has taught us anything, it's that death is NOT the end... Oh, and I couldn't decide if Kara was hallucinating she was with her Mom on her deathbed, or whether she was REALLY THERE? (Which might indicate the "elevated into a higher being" scenario?) So while the Starbuck we know may be physically dead, I'd be _really_ surprised if that's the last we see of Bucky. Like the man says, there hasn't been any "Bad Episodes" especially not the last three which have been a welcome change from drumming out cylonescapade after cylonescapade! BSG seeds its storylines so that the foundations of the pay-off will be much more effective. The elements they planted in Starbucks story-arc have yet to come to effect, Malestrom is only a stage in the journey. Whatever they planted in her stomach on Caprica, whatever the conditioning they put her through on New Caprica and whatever the true fate of her explosive transfiguration is all yet to be revealed. Patience is a virtue lost amongst couch-potatoes!

she found it hard/interesting coming back to work (BSG) after her absense? I'm sure I read that somewhere, and that she wasn't meant to have said so (hence her "I die and I'm a Cylon" bit in the BSG gag reel). But bottom-line, Maelstrom wasn't about sending Starbuck to her death but for her to see what lies between life and death. Notice how in the end her character isn't in space but rather bathed in white light (kinda like D'Anna was before she saw the Final Five). I'll say it again, Starbuck's story ending here just doesn't make sense. Too many questions left over.

Hell yeah, now that's another thing this show hasn't been scared to do; sensuality is depicted as casualy as every other aspect of the dramatic content which makes it all the more realistic and easy to relate to. It so much more evolved than any Sci-fi show before it it and easily the best since Babylon 5. And just for the record, Starbuck has one great body, voluptuous and sexy the way real women are supposed to be and not yet another smiling bone with make-up and a hairdo.

If you didn't see the TV guide review (which covers the remaining episodes of BSG) then you don't realize that the death of Starbuck is the beginning of teh final story arc for the season. This isn't the end, it is the starts. Apparently, this is giong o lead to us scraping our jaws off the floor at the seasno finale. As the reviewer said, if you think this is the end for Starbuck, then you haven't really learned what BSG is all about.

The podcast for the episode specifically states that the producers of the show wanted to kill of Starbuck and it wasn't Katee that asked to be off the show. If you haven't read her recent interviews, she seem pretty pissed about being killed off.

OK...I watched this again last night from the DVR and it looked like there was the Cylon Raider AND Starbuck's Viper in Apollo's field of view when he called "Visual!" And then the white light. And the whole 'he's coming for you' and so on. I think she was abducted by the Cylons and will be back. Mind-fucked and probably a tool of the Cylons and knows the path to Earth. She might become some sort of Cylon High Priestess, setting up events for Season 4. Or, she DID pull a Denise Crosby and will never be seem again. After all, she did basically fuck a robot like Tasha did. (OK, Data is a cyborg but it's still sex with a toaster!)

I understand, the way that the original Starbuck went out was utterly awesome, with him reversing course and attacking a squadron of raiders with a damaged engine. But the vibe that I am getting is that she is special not as a fighter in the physical world, but as a spiritual guide. I understand that it may sound hollow for now, but there is a potential payoff. This is just me, but I am willing to invest in this possibility because BSG has not gone down that well exhaustively unlike LOST. However, Abin Sur, I fully agree with you that from a physically and instant perspective Starbuck did not go down heroically. In fact, she went down with people suspecting that she was mentally unstable.

Starbuck is No. One, the first of the five "lost" Cylons -- and we will discover that fact in the season finale, in which Lee is forced to sacrifice himself to save someone else (a la Apollo taking the shot to save Sheba) and then finding himself revived by a circle of ghostly white figures... who represent the next-plane merging of humanity and Cylon... with Starbuck (and possibly a quartet of Leobens) gazing down benevolently on this most honorable of humans. Cheese? It would be... if it weren't gonna be deftly handled by Ron Moore. I have faith we will see Starbuck again -- and it will be a moment comparable to Galactica's atmo drop. Hell, it will be comparable to the Millennium Falcon soaring out of the sun in the nick of time in STAR WARS. Have faith, ya bastidges!!! They keep making the point about "between life and death" and D'Anna was flatlining her way there over and over. "Leoben" was really someone else, helping her to the Other Side. They also specifically mentioned the "This has all happened before, this will all happen again" line in Maelstrom. So we could see some story elements concerning the nature of life and death and beyond...

The reviewer has seen the remaining episodes from season 3 and says the following: "The episode that undoubtedly will cause the largest stir in TV fandom was Galactica’s riveting and ultimately devastating journey into the metaphysical, as Starbuck (a brooding, tormented Katee Sackhoff) finally faced and embraced her destiny. Maybe they thought with all the unavoidable leaks going on, the easiest thing to do was to hide in plain sight and tell us exactly what happens, thereby making us think that's the one thing that couldn't happen. After all, what we saw was Katie Sackhoff saying to camera that "I die and turn out to be a Cylon" and then after offering to show us her death scene, we see footage of her head getting knocked off from Halloween: Resurrection. So we all think ... well then that's exactly what can't be happening ... To add, maybe everyone in the cast in on what really happens and they're all just pulling our legs and filling the airwaves with so much contradictory stuff that we won't really know what happens until we see it on screen.

If she is a Cylon, she's a Final Fiver, which means she's unknown to all of the 7 'known' models (with the possible exception of Cavil). Boomer's memories seemed fairly extensive from what we saw but all the people who supposedly were part of it were erased in that explosion. For all we know, no-one really got to know Starbuck until she was an adult. Also, it's quite possible the Final Fivers were integrated into human society even sooner than the other seven and at least some of them were around for years (Six). Doral and Cavil at least also must have been around for a while to get their jobs in Colonial society as well.

I guess I would be too if the producers came out of the blue and told me that my character was dying, especially when they'd been building up the whole destiny thing for so long. I supported OYL hugely, but this left turn is rather bizzare. Not that I won't keep watching the show (I wasn't watching for Starbuck, but for Baltar, Adama, and Ms. President), but I'm a little weirded out by Ron and David's choice.

She was implanted in her mother back during the first cylon wars. Her mom was most likely captured back then. Like I said before, we know she was medaled, but we don't know why... POW anyone? Cylons got her and experimented on her something fierce. That's why her mom resented her so much. She was a CYLON CHILD... At the very least a hybrid cylon child.

a ballsy episode, right? they actually offed her. and then i came here and see everyone decrying the whole ball o wax as pointless and how much starbuck sucked. well, i gotta say thats totally not what i saw on my televisual screen, nor what ive seen built up this season. what ive seen is a starbuck shown to be increasingly depressed and fucked up in her life, what with psycho cylons taking an interest, the romantic angle from new caprica onwards, freaky childhood visions and the whole big destiny thing. and its come to a head this episode with heavy foreboding of shit to come, and she finally chose to off herself - apparently believing theres something after death thats better than the shithole life shes been leading. frankly there are times when i feel like that WITHOUT the benefit of angelic visions and white light. i feel her character has built to this point - we couldnt have taken much more of what a weird bitch she is - and i am waiting for the payoff that this episode and the whole season has moved toward. this is what i see. also, i really liked the shot of her in her smalls in her apartment. thats a nice body.

See, here's my problem: I don't see that. After Exodus, our only sense of issues with Starbuck was viewed through the lens of the Love Quadrangle. Helo recognizes the eye of jupiter from Starbuck, they look at the picture at the end of the episode ... and we don't see/hear anything else about it until the most recent episode--and then they 'kill' her. Someone mentioned it should've been a two-parter; I wouldn't go that far, but I would've liked to see some the earlier parts of the episode (nightmares, flying troubles, maybe even the oracle) occur before the episode. Lead up to it over the course of a few episodes. And I think that's where a lot of people have a problem with this episode: it's abrupt at both ends.

The way I see it there wasn't anywhere else for Starbuck to go. She can't be with Lee and she doesn't seem connect with the other guy like she used to. It's almost like she doesn't fit on Galactica anymore. However I think this was a great episode and I also think she'll be back. She's off to find what lies between life and death. One of the plot points they haven't borrowed from the original is the ship of lights aliens. You get a sense of there's some higher truth from this episode about the Cylons and the humans. More than just Starbuck dying. What happened to the lords of Kobol? And what were they ? Why do the Cylons worship one god? Why was the device pointing the way to earth deadly to Cylons? How does earth fit into all of this? I think we may be starting to find out.

The underlying, subtle humor. A lot of it has to do with Baltar's exile and imprisonment and Tigh's lack of stereovision, I think. I remember when Ellen Tigh showed up, and Adama and Roslin kept ordering Baltar to test different blood and then Roslin finally meets Ellen ... that was funny. I miss stuff like that. Not saying I dislike this season (only the Senator Kelly ep really bugged me), but I think that sense of amusement is gone. And I don't know how they'll get it back.

And for the reasons you mentioned. I just wish they had integrated it better with the last few episodes. It kind of reminds me when they killed off the dude on 90210. He had already, for all intents and purposes, been pushed off to the sidelines. So they had an episode to make it official. Starbuck has been sidelined for awhile now, popping in occasionally with a line or two but not part of the main plot. When it came to the Love Quadrangle, the entire thing was viewed through the eyes of Lee (who sends his wife to rescue his girlfriend). So it came off like 'Oh wait, we have Starbuck and she's not doing anything--let's kill her off'. Not saying that was the intent, but that's how it felt.

she IS human. I agree with Squashua in that regard. Also, her being human is significant concerning the spiritual and prophetic drawing she made as a child. If she were Cylon, her drawing would lose all impact. As I tried to infer in the other TB, it now appears Kara has some real connection to the Lords of Kobol or to an ancient priest from Kobol IMO.

She landed on the Genesis Planet and is being regenerated as we write. But if BSG wants to be good SciFi, it'll leave her dead, because I'm tired of people in SciFi shows "dying" and always coming back. I didn't like what the character had become, so she should stay dead for that reason, too.

Olmos' breaking of his ship was not planned. Seeing as it was not a cheap prop but in fact a rented museum quality replica worth hundreds of thousands of dollars (see the Maelstrom podcast the last 2 minutes) It shocked the hell out of the set dresser. Moore describe their reaction as being "Oh My Fucking God"

I think we won't see her till next season, which is too bad. One of the best things about this show is how awkwardly attractive most of the women in the cast are. None of them fit into a "normal" beauty-myth mold, but Damn, it was nice to see Starbuck in her jammies. Maybe without her around, they'll give my next favorite awkward beauty more screentime: sultry, smouldering Seelix. Yeehaw!

In the conversation with Lee where Lee says his relationship with Dee has never been better, etc, there is one lingering shot where Starbuck's eyes glow red dots from the reflection of a red light on the hangar deck. Probably NO ACCIDENT, at the very least insurance for claimed foreshadowing if they decide to bring her back as a Cylon. Some cinematographer (at the very least) went far out of their way to get that effect!

Some in here might look at it as blasphemy. It's said Caprica will be everything what BSG is without the special effects. So if you like seeing people trapped in airlocks, seeing people go on strike because bad working conditions, or watching people paint pictures that they don't what the hell it is, you'll love Caprica.

I disagree that Starbuck was sidelined for awhile and her death was a last minute decision from the writers. I think it was intentional and planned since the first episode of this season. Leobon keeping her prisoner on New Caprica, trying to convince her to stay with him, that all lead to her "death" in Maelstorm.

Glen Larson, the creator of the original series, was a devout Mormon. His vision for Battlestar was a sci-fi allegory of Mormon history. Mormons believe in the 12 tribes of Israel, with a 13th "lost" tribe that seperated from the others. In Battlestar, there was 12 colonies and a 13th colony that left and found Earth. Mormons also believe that God lives on a planet named Kolob. In Battlestar, the planet Kobol is believed to be where the 12 lords of Kobol live.

That comes straight out of the Bible, 12 sons of Jacob, 12 tribes of Israel. So that part doesn't make any sense at all, 12 is repeated over and over again in the Bible. Also, the 2 sons of Joseph are given Tribe status by some scholars, making it 14 Tribes of Israel. Thanks for the other info though, maybe Kolob is where Xenu comes from too.

The Book of Mormon is supposed to be a supplement to the Bible, though people argue that there are too many contradictions between the 2 books. And yes, the 12 tribes of Israel is from the Bible. On the original series, the angels say "as you are, we once were; as we are, you will be" -- which is straight from Mormonism. Makes me wodner whether on the new show the humans are to the lords of Kobol as the Cylons are to the humans ....
