...Matt seems like a classy guy, giving Family Guy some props. Anyone who dismisses FG as simply an unfunny Simpsons ripoff clearly hasn't watched much of either show, or they' dknow that, initially, Family GUy was quite deliberately different than the Simpsons (and funnier pretty much out of the gate than the Simpsons was at the time). That's why the Simpsons started trying to ape Family Guy's style with all the ouot of context pop culture references and was part of what turned the Simpsons into the mockery of itself it has since become. Family Guy also got less funny for a while after they brought it back, but it seems to be climbing up out of that slump.

Family guy always gets a laugh outta me. Great for when I want to shut off my brain for awhile. Simpsons, hands down the best t.v. animation to hit the airwaves. Even when the show seems to be veering towards death, it still manages to get paddle zapped back to life. As far as Groening not being a part of the show, I say screw the writers who said that. That is shooting themselves in the foot. So when Groening isn't there the show suffers? Gee, whose fault is that? THE WRITERS, oh yeah.

it's missing the great characters that the Simpsons had. You can watch Simpson episodes (the first eight seasons or so anyway) over and over again because of the characters. I watch a Family Guy episode once and I'm done. There's no reason to come back because all they have are jokes. Admitedly funny jokes, but jokes nonetheless. If it's a Stewie and Brian episode I might give it a pass.

Family Guy is funny (matter of opinion), but it's not well written (not a matter of opinion). It's simply non sequitor jokes and barely linked pop culture references. And yeah, at times it can be hilarious ("Roman Pulanski's house"), but there's no way you can say that it's well written, as the plot is completely inconsequential, and it just falls between whatever gags they want to do. If you want a cartoon that is plot and character based, watch King of the Hill. Sure, you may not find it funny, but it IS well written.

It's not that the Simpsons isn't funny at all - objectively, it's a funny show. The problem is that it was once SO UNBELIEVABLEY GODAMNED FUNNY that when we see the decently funny episodes now we can only look at them with anger and disappointed. But objectively, The Simpsons, is still an okay show.

Let's face it, in the early 90's The Simpsons was the funniest show on television. Family Guy and South Park are much edgier and that's what people want right now. You couldn't have gotten away with Family Guy in 1991. No way. They are both hit and miss, but when they hit, it's great.

I'm a fan of Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy and Futurama. The latter of which is maybe the funniest thing ever on TV. Wanna know how I know that? I still watch it every night. I watch the first hour, then the replay later. The only cartoon on TV that sucks is American dad. That Alien is kinda funny but beyond that... no thanks.

King of the Hill is the best animated show on TV. Its strength lies in the fact that every line is not some smart-arsed quip, nor having to rely on some pop-culture flashback that doesn't actually contain any kind of joke, and the audience is expected to laugh at the writers' own perceived cleverness. A golden rule of comedy (we have written the odd comedy ourselves) is to have solid, interesting characters in place, then the humour can flow from those characters, giving the humour a greater resonance.

Does anyone seriously have a list of episodes where Homer and Marge's marriage is in trouble? Off the top, I can think of the time Marge wanted to save the manatees (wtf?), Homer turned gay, Marge had an affair with the bowling guy, Homer was a country music producer, Homer had an affair with Mindy from work, Homer taught a class and shared marital stories, Bart's parents split up as Milhouse's get back together, and Marge finds out Homer got married to a Vegas skank. So how many is that, 8?

What??? Family Guy was great it's first two-three years and has sucked majorly ever since. You actually think the hiatus has improved it creatively? That's the first time I ever heard that sentiment expressed or even hinted at. Or was I missing your sarcasm?

The Simpsons had five good years in it. That's it. Most shows seem to decline after five. It's just that the Simpsons didn't have the sense to go out, back when people could have still had good memories about it. After season 5, it became a slapstick show with no real story. However, Family Guy is much better at that. The Simpsons is best when it has a coherent story, grounded in some semblance of reality. I still watch every episode, but I couldn't tell you what happened in a single one this year. It's in one eye, out the other.

American Dad has been consistently better than Family Guy since they've been back to back. It's not great, just better.

Kill of the Hill is indeed awesome. It doesn't get much love, but we all so often bitch about the declining quality of shows we like, that we sometimes forget to honor the ones that stay solid throughout their run. In that respect, Kill of the Hill is one of the best shows on TV. I never wanted to like it, but there it is. Judge is also responsible for Office Space, probably my favorite movie comedy of all time. They should give him a new show or something.

but NOTHING can top the Simpsons. I used to think Family Guy was better, but i go back and watch Simpson's and so much of that stuff is just amazing. Family Guy after repeated viewings is just not great. someone had said earlier that the simpson's wasnt controvesial enough. Think back to the episode where Marge met President Clinton, and he told her he had sex with pigs

How do we rate American Dad? Mildly amusing at best. The best laugh I ever got out of American Dad was in a the Simpsons episode "The Italian Bob" where it showed a picture of Peter Griffen and said he was wanted for plagiarism, and then Stan Smith who was wanted for plagiarism of plagiarism.

Regarding King of the Hill: It is absolutely underrated. However, I have issues with it that certain characters (Peggy, Cotton, sometimes Bill or Dale) are so annoying that they will frustrate me enough to make me turn off an episode.

I happen to enjoy both the Simpsons and Family Guy. The big difference for me (aside from total level of crudeness) is that (massive generalizations ahead) Simpsons episodes get better with age and repeat viewing, while Family Guy episodes usually become more annoying.

For me, the final answer is watch which ever one you want. For me that's both of them, followed by a healthy dose of Futurama reruns, because that was one of the best shows ever on TV.

It's obvious Groening is very involved in the show. He's even been credited as writer a few times, years after the show began. There's always comments in the commentary about how Groening didn't agree with a certain joke or thought the joke didn't fit in with the character. He's not a showrunner and he doesn't executive produce certain episodes, but he does keep tabs on what's going on. To say he hasn't been involved at all is simply a false statement.

It's sort of the anti-Family Guy, subtle humour that holds up over multiple viewings, while Family Guy uses shallow humour that is hilarious once, but gets old fast.
The official rankings are in
by _Maltheus_

At each show's respective best, I'd rate them like this:

South Park > Simpsons > Family Guy > King of the Hill > American Dad

At present, it's something like:

King of the Hill > American Dad > Family Guy > South Park > Simpsons

King of the Hill and American Dad didn't really get any better, the others just got a lot worse. And King is the most consistent show of the bunch. South Park at it's prime, spanks the rest for breakfast. But the last two years have sucked pretty bad.

Even though I prefer to watch movies instead of TV (sorry, coaxial), I love all the aforementioned prime-time cartoons. I think Futurama is the most under-rated, though. Not King of the Hill. American Dad is likely a close second.

Oh, yeah. I would LOVE to see a great Futurama movie!

Groening has some class, giving props to other shows. Unlike South Park's creators.

the funniest thing about these FG bashers is they know they laughed quited a few times while watching it, but are too 'above' too admit it, and possibly complementing each other on their fart aromas. meanwhile south park was funny a few years ago, now have become too preachy message-driven. simpsons was pretty stale early to mid 2000s but have gotten better now.
