I think a lot of younger kids today aren't going to know the difference, because it's such an old property, but I think the early casting looks good.

As a kid, watching _Get Smart_ when it was originally aired was a big time. Great fun. I hope the writers and cast can emulate the zaniness of the this 60s TV icon. I still hear people of my generation occasionally saying: "Sorry about that chief." Thanks to Don Adams for adding to our catch-phrase lexicon.

guy - the "zipper" entrance way into the evil lair .... the desk / car chase. I haven't seen it since I was 10 on cable but I remember liking it.

I hope this rocks. Steve C can do no wrong and the rest of cast seems to round out that greatness. And it's good to see The Rock getting some movie time. I find him utterly halarious. I'm looking forward to this.

There is no apostrophe needed after "gotta". You're shortening "got to", so what is your apostrophe standing for, the "o" that you replaced with an "a"? Kids may not recognize this show, but they ought to recognize Inspector Gadget and realize that this is the source (and superior) material.

for Chief! Will they now include in the trailer..and Academy Award (tm) Winner Alan Arkin ...as The Chief....?..of course they will. This would only work if someone like Apatow was attached, where it would be silly and smart ala Ricky Bobby, or Anchorman. I fear it will rely on big stupid stunts and slapstick. Who's directing this thing??

CARELL + HATHAWAY = WAY CREEPY

I'm sorry, but I'm still totally creeped out by the pairing of 44-year-old Carell with 24-year-old Hathaway. I would've loved to have seen someone more age-appropriate as 99 - especially since those possibilities are so much more interesting, ranging from the likes of Sandra Bullock to Monica Bellucci.

When will Hollywood realize to play it straight?
by Doctor_Sin
Feb 28th, 2007
02:50:03 PM
That's where the comedy gold is. Not in just acting silly or situation-inappropriate. If this had been played totally straight-faced as a serious Bond-style spy caper, with Max totally oblivious to his own ineptitude and how it creates vast Rube Goldberg-like domino effects, this would be a classic. And don't be afraid to cast an "older" woman (i.e., out of the 20-something bracket). Again, it has to be sincere and straight-faced, letting the ridiculous gadgets and situations speak for themselves without self-reflexive "Wow, I am sooooo goofy!" humor.

Toilet humor isn't funny in and of itself. Pee jokes just don't mean anything once you're out of 6th grade. Even a bunch of funny jokes crammed into a single film without any reason for being there = doom.

Get Smart the TV show succeeded because of the creative forces at work who understood humor and how to play it.

The Get Smart website says the script turns Max into a fat (ha, ha, ha, fat guys are funny losers = really tired joke; where are all the skinny loser guys that actually exist in the real world?) wannabe spy (gotta make him the lovable dope everyman) who loses weight to try to be a CONTROL spy and butts heads with 99 (hey, surprise, surprise - I bet they fall in love by film's end). To make matters worse, they turn Max into a bumbling, inept, goofball a la Steve Martin's anal raping of Inspector Clouseau.

Where in this is there ANYTHING to get excited about? And all the "I love dumb fun movies" apologists will no doubt fly their flags, in complete ignorance of the fact that they have forsaken any semblance of quality control just to go spend $8 for popcorn somewhere.

Bend over, movie-goers. That unlubed cock that Hollywood is inching toward your anus is all thanks to you yourselves. Hollywood rapes you because you ask for it.

Would you believe...

Umm... Yeah...

How about it'll be a big dud if they don't improve the script?

Right...

I hope that they're pulling the old, "Put the fake script on the internet, but film a completely different one." trick.

They just shouldn't have the name of great TV-classics...
The old show is recently running on TV again. I haven't seen it since 15 years or so and I was really surprised how funny it still is! While a "newer" show like SLEDGE HAMMER isn'T really that funny anymore (it has some good laughs, but it was way funnier back in the 80's), I still laugh my ass of in every episode of GET SMART! I hope that Steve Carrell (who seems to be pretty smart [no pun intended] and a fan of the show) will say at one point 'no, give me a better script'. Or even better: The script review is fake and the script is great :)

BJ novak was being considered, as writer, for this project early on, after dozens of established writers passed. and robert weide - for director. the production company went through any and all writers and directors for this project, in development. no takers. i got my hands on some early drafts through someone who was closely involed- they were shit. havent read the shooting draft, so i will reserve judgement. lets just say it was a painful process, and something tells me the end result will be the same. does any 18-30 year old care about this show? do your parents care? it's like making a film version of Laugh-In. what a joke. Mod Squad, Bewitched.... Get Smart? hopefully Carrell can escape unscathed.

I completely agree with you. Hathaway's a cute young thing, but she doesn't have the gravitas as an actress to play 99. Maybe she'll surprise me, but an older actess would have been nice. Bullock, I suppose, would be good. I think Bellucci's too "big" for the role. Not physically, but she'd completely make Carrell look like a wimp. Ah well, it doesn't matter because it'll probably stink. Not too many of these TV Movies turn out very well. I wouldn't even think about seeing it if it weren't for Carrell. Still, I'm gonna let the reviews sway me on this one.
