Tarantino's soundtracks are renowned, for sure. But I'm just wondering why does he need to use all retro music for it? Why can't he get current musicians to write original songs in the same vein as the one's he's using? I thought he had put his whole 'retro-70's" cool vibe behind him, but c'est la vie. After the genius of Kill Bill, I'll see anything he makes. Plus, he finally got around to casting the greatest actor in history, Kurt Russell.

Grindhouses of the world

I used to live in Adelaide, South Australia, and I have memories going to see movies at the Regent Cinema off Rundle Mall (no longer open). I reckon cinemas 2 & 3 there sound like grindhouses - brick walls with tacky angular plastic and glass "wallpaper", narrow cinemas with seats that you'd have to grab a vinyl cushion or two from the seats next to yours so your ass wouldn't get pins & needles, and the feeling that the movie you'd end up watching could end up being something from the X-rated cinema down the street. Ah, how I hated the place back then. And how I miss it now.

Awesome. QT's soundtracks are always amazing, and this one looks like it will definitely follow suit. As for shitty theaters, I went to see 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' in some craphole in San Francisco, and actually got to watch some hooker beat the crap out of her john when he tried to stiff her for some money. They were sitting about two or three rows behind me, and I actually heard his nose break. No joke.

I don't have a track by that name on the version of the BLOW OUT soundtrack I own, but I'm guessing that's the main, tragic theme. If so, I don't know how I feel about that. Actually, I wish I didn't know prior to seeing the movie; now, I'm going to be preoccupied all throughout my first viewing. This is all about my enjoyment, by the way.

I'm still excited for the movie, it looks great, but WHERE IS OUR FUCKING JOHN CARPENTER SCORE. all capitals means this last part is important, thanks Harry.

Its terrible to say, but on the whole I've gotten bored with him.

Reservoir Dogs is still a good solid film, but Pulp fiction feels gimmicky after 20 or so viewings, and Jackie Brown did NOTHING for me at all. I'd have said that it represented the side of Tarentino I didn't care for, but then I saw Kill Bill. (fun but stupid) I have some slight hope for Inglorious bastards but other than that I think his 70's kitch cinema should have stayed in the 90's.

Be nice if QT made an actual movie again...

Something other than these OTT genre throwbacks to films he loved as a kid. I mean, I enjoyed Kill Bill as much as anyone (though it was INCREDIBLY SELF-INDULGENT and would've been better as a hardcore single 2, 2.5 hr revenge movie), but seriously, Quentin - just do a proper flick. Pretty please?

How can QT et RR let this happen ? They're gonna come in Cannes, France, and let french geeks see their movies separately, probably with a 5 months delay between the two ??? I can listen to it over and over. The other Tarantino soundtracks are mixed. None of them is really bad, but for every great song you can find also at least one bad one.
But really, if there is one reason to like Tarantino, then it's his taste and knowledge in music.

As someone who grew up in inner city Baltimore and used to go to these types of movies as a kid I must say that I never heard the term Grindhouse used back then. In fact until this movie came out I'd never heard the term. Perhaps it's a regional thing? I'm still looking forward to seeing this movie.

For some reason, the term "Grindhouse," never caught on in Baltimore. I mean, sure, Baltimore had its fair share of theaters showing these films, most of which are long gone or playing porn now. It is not really a regional term for a movie, but the theater that plays exploitation films. The big ones were in NYC, LA, SF.......though, they were everywhere. I think a better word for these theaters was "shit-hole."

The term refers to the shitty inner-city theaters that showed EVERYTHING crappy, because they had nothing else to show. Multiple-bill b-movies and burlesque shows were the draw. I saw someone had never heard the term before and wanted to clue them in as to its etymology.

They've been terrorizing U.S. filmgoers for years. I don't know if you guys have to deal with this shit out there, but here in the Weinsteins' own country they spend every day trying to think up ways to be a pain in the ass to movie lovers. One of their biggest passions is buying the rights to Asian films. Most of these films they never release, but if it happens to win the lottery and get a release it's under a generic title, usually dubbed, almost always half an hour shorter, sometimes with a completely different sound track, often 2-4 years after it was made. During that down time they like to send out threatening cease-and-desist letters to any stores that bring in the original versions as imports. And with all their current movies (such as Tom Yum Goong, which they call Quentin Tarantino Presents The Protector) they have an "exclusive deal" that they can only be rented by Blockbuster Video. There is no legal basis for only allowing one chain to rent a movie but until they got a court order stopping them they were planning to include a 1-800 number on all their DVDs to report if you rented it somewhere else. It's important to them that it's only available at Blockbuster because it's a shitty corporate chain that nobody likes, so they're hoping people will just get lazy and buy the movie somewhere else instead of renting it.

In other words, yes they are being assholes by splitting the movie into two, but they are only trying to spread their reign of terror across the world so we can all be punished equally.

They do let Tarantino do what he wants though, and have been coasting on the cred he gives them for years.

John Carpenter / Grindhouse

Isn't Rodriguez doing the music for Planet Terror though? I don't think Carpenter's doing that one either.

As for this grindhouse term, I have definitely heard it for years but I think it is used more in discussions of the history of 42nd street theaters and what not than it was at the time. I could be wrong.

I gotta say though, as much as I am looking forward to these movies, I already want to punch anybody who uses that word in the face. Young movie nerds already started overusing it after learning it from Tarantino when Kill Bill came out. Now we gotta put up with this asshole on all the trailers explaining to us how there were these theaters and they played movies back to back, blah blah blah. (as if back to back is a necessary part of the definition.) I think there is about a 75% chance that while waiting in line for the movie I will hear some young fucker explaining to his girlfriend what he thinks grindhouse means and I'm gonna snap and throw him through some sort of a Spiderman 3 cardboard standee or something. It could get ugly. I'm working on it but I cannot guarantee your safety, fellas, so please let's show some restraint on this word, i.e., never use it again. thanks boys.

We didn't have grindhouses we had drive-ins. My earliest movie memory is being five years old (in '83) and seeing a double feature of Mortuary and Mausoleum. I'll never forget the sight of a young Bill Paxton impaling people with embalming needles and Bobbie Bresee's tits growing faces and eating Marjoe Gortner. I also vaguely remember seeing a triple feature of Yor, Hunter from the Future, Sword and the Sorcerer and Beastmaster and a double bill of House by the Cemetery and Seven Doors of Death there too. It closed in 85, and I didn't see another double feature at a drive-in again until they re-opened one up in '02 Delaware and it played Daredevil and X-Men 2. Recently on Halloween they played a Texas Chainsaw Massacre triple feature (TCM 1 and 2 and The Beginning), which rocked hard, but mostly they just play kid's stuff. I'm looking forward to Grindhouse (and the soundtrack too, my fiancee loves Jeepster, she plays it on her ipod obsessively) and I have my fingers crossed that there will be sequels along the way...

The theater floors need to be STICKY, the seats smelly, a few sleeping winos in the aisles, some pimps and their hookers - staring each other down and yelling threats during the film, a couple old guys in raincoats whacking off to the nudity, and a couple kids smoking weed. Seeing this in a megaplex defeats the whole point.

In the last issue of Fangoria Rodriguez talks about how (in his film, anyway) the movie will intentionally "skip a reel" where characters who weren't established as such earlier will suddenly be at the forefront after the "skip".As far as under-lighting I hope they don't since most cracker-box multiplexes do it anyway.
