There's this little thing these days called ONLINE PORN that pulls off the same trick, but does it much, much better...

And for the record, I thought "Hostel" was one of the most thought-provoking horror movies I'd seen in ages, with a real Fulci feel and a savage critique of capitalism... but the idea of watching girls get tortured doesn't appeal to me; I'll wait and read some reviews before I decide if I'll see Hostel II.

Yes, Cabin Fever was goofy and forgettable. So what? HOSTEL was a horror masterpiece, and REAL horror fans appreciate that.

As far as I'm concerned, Rob Zombie has so far only demonstrated his love and appreciation for other, older, better movies. That's fine, but with HOSTEL, Roth actually used certain elements of older horror to make something new and sophisticated that drew strengths from its predecessors, but could only have been made in the modern day.

Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but so far Rob Zombie is only a kitsch musician who's decided to make movies. Roth is a filmmaker. Maybe I missed something, but H1KC was just nonsense, and DEVIL'S REJECTS was a mess, empty of significance or any depth. It was all surface and attitude and style, whereas HOSTEL had real substance, a complex, shifting mood, and profound existential irony, as well as as that treasured, elusive element-- "vibe"-- none of which Zombie has yet shown himself to be capable of.

But I welcome disagreement... I'm willing to be wrong about Zombie. I wish there were more horror directors I thought were worthwhile!

Don't you understand that the frat boys' own callow lust for exploitation of the exotic (foreign women) drove them into a situation where "bigger fish" wanted THEIR frat boy bodies as something exotic (the novelty of torturing upper-middle-class Americans)... and then through self-defense, the main character himself took on the negative characteristics (overt sadistic violence) of those who had victimized him and his friends, driving him to realize that he was simultaneously both victim and exploiter... and at the end, he was not only who he was, but also who he hated, and also what he himself had desired.

And that's without touching on the capitalist critique aspect, which manifested in the above as well as in sundry other ways (the dynamic with the feral kids etc.)

The math here is pretty straightforward.

What the hell kind of women do you hang around with that are uptight and repressed sexually and don't watch porn? And why are you hanging around "an army of blonde morons" in the first place? Way to go, Voice of Sensitivity.

Get out more. Meet new people. That girl at the comic shop with the tats, black nail polish and piercings? She'd go see Hostel 2 with you. Go for it.

We'll see about Hostel II... I mean, if Roth is continuing to draw influence from Italian horror, there is a powerful element of woman-hate and woman-torture to most of those movies, probably thanks to Italy being so catholic (wild guess). So we'll see where Hostel 2 goes. Maybe Roth will surprise everyone??
