What a bunch of maroons. And they got many and heads after they pulled those hijinks to cover their own reputations? Who os dumb enough to think that was anything other than the worlds biggest pants explosion? And I'll bet every single one of the functionaries involved knew better, every step of the way. But this is the kind of tripe that happens when people take seriously slogans like ZERO TOLERANCE and YOU CAN'T BE TOO CAREFUL. Obviously you can be too careful... Way too careful.

C'mon guys. The poster for VACATION was itself a parody of the classic Conan covers done by Vallejo and Frazetta. (Ditto for Army of Darkness) Why do you think Ramis got Vallejo to do the VACATION poster in the first place? Take a look at the original poster for Conan the Barbarian. Carl is standing in exactly the same pose on the ATHF poster as Schwarzenegger.

The Vacation posters were parodies, and I get a Boris Vallejo vibe more than Frazetta off this poster, probably due more to the big lizard than anything. Frazetta is and always will be the standard by which classic fantasy art is measured, but there are many styles and flavors that appeal to different people. Fun poster overall.

Frazetta? Are You Kidding?
by Borass Valleyhole
Feb 23rd, 2007
12:20:06 AM
Frazetta's been yelled at by his wife for leaving better art than Boris ever made floating in the toilet for her to flush...Boris is an uninspired hack who paints the life out of everything he touches (his preliminary color drawings are actually way better than his final paintings, but still suck)and uses photos of models- including himself, vain twat- for reference. Frazetta is the Beatles of fantasy art, who could draw or paint anything cold, from his head. His stuff was always loose, gritty and alive (he still paints, but has stiffened up a touch since he HAD A FRIGGING STROKE AND THEN RE-TRAINED HIMSELF TO PAINT WITH THE OTHER FRIGGING HAND FUCK!!)with everyone covered in dirt and blood and looking mean...ESPECIALLY the heroes. The shame of it all is that- as far as I'm concerned- Vallejo- the Oasis (read: unoriginal, derivative hack) to Frazetta's Beatles- held Frazetta back from the respect and prestige he truly deserved simply by being mistaken for him so often, with his room-temperature paintings that represent the cheesiest of fantasy art conventions. I wouldn't be surprised if Boris actually painted that condiment movie or whatever the shit it is poster. He clearly likes doing his own tributes to himself. If it wasn't him, it was probably that Rowena chick who stupidly picked the wrong artist to make a career out of ripping off (I think she might actually be his wife, or "prodigy" or some vaguely creepy thing like that). Anyway, a side-by-side comparison of the two artists' work from their heyday would bring home just how different they were. And yes, I created an account and password just to comment on this...it's because I'm an aging nerd watching a lot of really great things fade into obscurity or- worse- get relegated to the graveyard of ironic (misdirected)references.....Ok ay, I'm done...commence the kicking...

by Borass Valleyhole

I was talking about fantasy artists and their album cover work, not "music". 'member? It had to do with who beat who in the whole bombastic, self-agrandizing sleeve-art category, or at least that's how it was playing in my dusty old skull. You seem intent on having an argument with me (of course I know that many talkbackers out there generally just want to bait people into an amusing rant, but mine is done). When I mentioned that I was "aging", I guess it was more pre-emptive self-deprecation than anything else, fearing that I'd given myself away with all the retro name-dropping and wanting to call myself an old man before anyone else did. I guess that makes me insecure. I'm actually not "old" as such (I was a child in the seventies), but I know that even 30 is considered old nowadays (as are people who use the term "nowadays" I suppose). As far as the Kiss covers go, I feel that you didn't really read my comment, because I was- in fact- following your thread re: the Meatloaf album covers. I thought you had made a joke, and I was trying to join in on the whole "name-another-cheesy-album-cov er-artist" game that I thought was breaking out. I named Ken Kelly- the artist who painted the Kiss covers- because, like Boris- he is another third rate Frazetta wannabe, who made a career out of that kind of crap. I was going for a battle of the "complete '70's bullshit" (to borrow your term) album covers, but I guess I was the only one playing. And yes, I have hated Boris for years. Even as a ten-year-old I thought he was a hack. His paintings are real shiny, but lifeless and obvious. Frazetta- on the other hand- will always be a favorite. I learned to ink from his work, as well as taking many anatomy lessons from his figures. It means something to me, yes. Is that so passe? Everyone around here seems to have such animosity toward each other. And to think that- naively- I'd briefly thought that you were trying to strike up a little friendly back-and-forth with you sarcastic "smart and funny" remark. Anyway, here you go...take another cheap swipe. Only don't imply that I'm bitter and old and living in a basement somewhere- some other original soul already beat you to that one.

by dplatt

...but he in turn was obviously influenced by other artists, probably Kelly Freas and some of the other EC artists (in his own comedy movie posters, Frazetta obviously borrowed the "lots of people running around" motif from Jack Davis). Hell, you could go back to NC Wyeth if you want. The point is that if the poster (which is sweet, btw) was drawn by Corben, Vallejo or Frazetta himself, it was obviously influenced by Frazetta, who is part of a longer tradition anyway.
