Sorry, the concept is just retarded. You could go and find GHOSTBUSTERS and BACK TO THE FUTURE on tape anywhere for pennies. I'll GIVE YOU MY TAPES if you want. Unless this is a period piece set in 1986 when studios priced VHS tapes for rental ($90 per tape, can you believe that shit?!) this movie lacks all sorts of foundation in reality. This premise is a sad excuse for a one-joke. What's next, a comedy where hot women only love fat men? Wait, that's been done (h/t to KING OF QUEENS)

There's a difference between goofy and idiotic. I just checked out wikipedia's page on this movie and the reviewer failed to mention a key plot point in his/her review (that's assuming Wiki is correct): The video store has only one customer- an elderly lady whose grasp on reality depends on her ability to watch VHS tapes. So, Black and the gang remake these movies to help keep this woman sane. Oh, the comedy...

were some crappy little theater group and they looked at this crisis as a way to maybe get some practice in for their group, that would be a lot more plausible. The idea of recreating famous movies is funny. It would be funny if other people in the town wanted to get in on the action too, and with this old lady being totally oblivious to the gag. She could be in town, getting groceries and think she recognizes Bill Murray when it's really Wally, the supermarket manager, etc. I mean, the concept is not that hard to fix to make it halfway logical.

There's a difference, I would guess, between this movie and a Zucker comedy though. In those movies, everyone is an idiot because the movie is a satirical spoof. If this BE KIND, REWIND is that type of flick, then sure, I throw all disbelief out the window. But this doesn't sound like satire.

THRILLING! If that's not a title that promises enormous entertainment, I've never heard one! Big ups to the Marketing Wizards who concoted such an irresistible movie monicker!!!

Perhaps it will play in a double feature with "Keep Our City Clean, Don't Litter," or "If Safety Seal Is Broken, Do Not Purchase" or "This Vehicle Makes Wide Right Turns." Those would be great movie titles too.

Really, you can't go wrong with ANY title that is as also an out-of-date and annoying admonishment.

Some of my favourite comedies have retarded premises like 'Billy Madison' and 'Half Baked'. Going through grades 1 to 12 to inherit your Dad's company, or selling weed to bail your friend out of jail are idiotic premises, but great comedy came out of them. This premise is idiotic, so it depends mostly on how its carried out...and its in capable hands...so I will give it the benefit of the doubt until its reviewed after its release.

I don't hate those movies, aside from Norm MacDonald and Bob Sagat (respectively) those movies felt really flat to me. I'm choosey with comedies, I guess. The last recent movie I thought was really funny... probably 40 YEAR-OLD VIRGIN. I thought THANK YOU FOR SMOKING was funny too, but that's not so much a laugh-out-loud movie. I'm a consumer, so I think that gives me a right to render an opinion on what movie I'm going to spend money on or not. Look, do any of you have an opinion on what TV set you like? SONY? Zenith? But by some people's logic here, unless you can make something better than what you're criticizing, don't say a word. I'm not a filmmaker, I don't manufacture television sets, etc. I do, however, comprise a part of the moviegoing audience. Therefore, I have every right to say what's on my mind with respect to a movie. The "thought police" running around here is kind of silly, don't you think?

For some unknown reason, more women nowadays are open to either turning a blind eye to nerdish proclivities, or to be into them as well. How many cute chicks do you see nowadays watching anime or reading manga, or attending conventions? I tell you, any decent looking guy that's somewhat H/W proportionate can get a cute chick to lay him. We are living in an unheralded time. I thank the OC, comic book movies, and the rise of hipsters.

Okay, that explains why they'd be renting VHS, something I haven't seen for at least 5 years now.

But there's still one problem: the economy was just as good in the 80s as it is now. There are more slacker McJobs than there are slackers to fill them. Who cares if these guys get canned. Just apply to the place across the street, they'll take you. Even with a crimminal form longer than your arm you can get a job as a cashier as long as you say you're "a team player".

And do these guys think nobody will notice that they're watching a version of 'The Exorcist' starring the bloke from the their local video store instead of Linda Blair?

This movie sounds stoo-pid.

It should have been. What I've read is that this is a video store that caters to one client, an elderly lady who's flimsy grasp on reality is nourished by her video-rental habit. She relies on VHS tapes of her favorite movies to keep her from losing her mind. Desperate to save this woman from going insane, Jack Black and MosDef venture to re-shoot famous movies instead of splurging $10 on a whole new set of VHS tapes.

Where a guy dubs over movies at a videostore to add "titular lines." So, for OUT OF AFRICA, there's a shot of a jeep riding into the dusty savannah, and you hear a blatantly mismatched voice say "I can't wait to get OUT OF AFRICA, Meryl." And for Star Wars you heard the line "I'm just so tired of all these STAR WARS!" The skit was pretty fucking funny. I've looked for it on youtube, no dice. But do search for "ass pennies" on youtube for another classic UCB skit.

Premise actually works in the context of the movie.

03:20:27 PM
For the guy claiming the premise is just too implausible - I had the same worry and it is actually handled in a completely plausible way in the movie. They initially are forced to reshoot just ONE movie for a demanding, slightly crazy woman who gives them only three hours to deliver it to her, or else she'll tell the owner of the store they lost it and Mos Def will lose his job. So they have just a few hours to replace it, and there's nowhere local that still carries VHS. That one-off spoof becomes a smash hit with the local kids, and they start a business doing more re-enactments. They don't re-purchase the tapes because the movies themselves aren't what's in demand - the people want to see the hilarious re-enactments. Script was brilliant and so is Gondry. I am psyched.

First - its grounded in the same aesthetically real sense that Eternal Sunshine was. It was shot in a real town on real sets no stages and most of the extras and a lot of the cast came from locals. Secondly, the plot device is just there to get things moving. It's definitely not a period piece; i was suprised to find how much it is about now. As has been mentioned a wacky plot device makes them have to remake the movies in mere hours which adds to the lo fi nature of the reshoots; they have to do them in a few hours. Gentrification and community is a huge theme throughout the movie. If anythinig the movie is about a community coming together in something creative that's of their own making. It's a really ridiculous comedy premise but this is a comedy that's actually about something. I can't wait for this one and I saw it getting shot. If you don't believe me, wait til you see the unfuckingbelievable single take shot that in one take communicates everytihng you need to feel about the joy of making films. Oh and Mos Def is fucking amazing. Dude takes his shit seriously and is a great foil for Black.

It's not like he was that guy in the Grindhouse tb having a haemorrhage about the internal logic behind how the chick with the machinegun leg can actually fire it. Sheesh! To me it sounds like this is the kind of movie where the premise doesn't actually matter at all compared to the main thrust of the film. drturing, you may have worked on it but you may want to re-read your stuff before you post it. Just sayin' you're not doing the film any favours. It's not like we should have to decode YOUR stuff/grammar considering your name! If you're (hey look an apostrophe) going to call people asshats spell "you're" correctly and then don't expect any of them to go to the movie, because you just insulted them.

As for Mos Def, I don't know about him. The mumbling thing he does in a couple of his films drives me insane (it's not like he's Brando and I couldn't find any character reason for him to be that way) but he's been pretty good in other stuff so...
