That's what most people have been saying since the first trailers came out. 1 in 1000 people(if not less) have actually heard of Ghost Rider prior to this movie coming out. Simply put, I will see this movie for entertainment value alone. It looks fun enough. I know who Ghost Rider is, but never read a comic book of it, so I am going to be entertained, not to see an Oscar contender. It's not like I am going to see something like Turistas or Boogeyman.

Hey, Massawyrm, did you read Harry's review? Here's a quote from *yours*: "(Cage's) decade long quest to play a comic book character finally complete, no one, and I mean NO ONE, will be able to say he half-assed it at all. Whether you like him or not is the big question – but he’s absolutely leaving it all out there." Harry's review paints a totally different picture. I think Harry said Cage was just "phoning it in!" This sums up the flick nicely. Cage either comes off like general Nic Cage dryness or as horrific, depending on if you like him or not. You like him, this will be a great performance. You don't, this blows. Easy.

Scriptwriters need to rewatch the first Superman to be reminded of how to *pace* the human element and balance it with heroic daring-do.

How are we supposed to take that movie seriously? Dare Devil was a poorly directed movie. And any director who thinks a fight on a playground (the cleanest playground I've ever seen in a city) is a great scene involving to iconic superheroes, needs to never be given a comicbook movie again. (Would they seriouly try to fight each other in front of children?) The studio has no one to blame but themselves for getting a by-the-numbers movie. If you want a great movie, get a great director. What could have been. . . .

I like a lot of people had not really heard of Ghost rider before this movie was announced so I don't hold it in my heart or anything. Even if it does get made can the guy make it? I've read that he intends to keep as close to the books as possible and Ennis was telling him he didn't need too but I'm worried. really really worried.

First, I haven't seen the film, and I don't read comic books. If something what Massawyrm suggests would happen in a film, where someone utters something cutesy like "not another superhero etc", and it weren't a sequel to something where superheroes had already been established and accepted, I'd be totally taken out of the experience. It would totally be breaking my suspension of disbelief, and I'd cringe at the corniness of it. IMHO, in a comic book movie, the public reaction to the superheroes is absolutely vital. Not only to establish a sense of awe, but to root it in reality somewhat. But on the other hand, I suppose it works without it when the film's target audience lives in a world where superheroes are commonplace. Damn geeks.

really pull off superhero films or a genre film. The characters are archtypes and essentially myths. An adolescent or condescending approach to superheroes is a major mistake (see Michael Bay's Transformers). If you shoot a myth like a 2 hour Evanescance video, you get one of Johnson's superhero films. You almost wonder at this point if Johnson really hates superheroes.

I have always said that I will forever regret Stanley Kubrick not directing some graphic novel for the big screen. Sure, he would've done "his own thing" with the material. Pissed everyone off, probably. But, the end result would no doubt have been a brilliant masterpiece.

Older directors like John Ford would have made EXCELLENT superhero films (they, in essence, did in a way). John Frankenheimer, at his peak, could have been THE comic book director.

Sadly, directors with the kinds of visions that made these giants and others so great...just can't be found that much in Hollywood.

But studio execs won't let him. He needs to be left alone to shine and a great movie might come out of it. Unfortunately, he's been given his 3.

I really only hated the mushiness of DD's love story - it seemed forced. But, the Director's Cut changed all that - it's a different film. In GR, Nic Cage and the studio wanted a PG-13 kids-actioner. Without interference, who knows what we would have gotten.

I say, yeah - MSJ's track record is so far 0-3...but I would give him another shot without hesitation if he was left alone and didn't have to consult with reps from the studio's toy franchise and marketing dept.

tht I have to come on here and defend Daredevil all the time! Ok that was whining on my part. However DD was not...in superninja's words "a whiny, teen angst revenge fantasy set to Evanescance" DD, in both versions, shows us a man compelled to fight for the underdog weather in court or on the streets. My perception of DD, and I'm not a DD comic book reader, so please take this into consideration, but my perception of DD from the movie is that he is someone who doesn't really enjoy being a superhero. That's he looking for the right way before going the vigilante way. He does it because he's seeking, not vengence but redemtion. Yes he seeks vengence for Elektra's death and as a bounus gets his father's killer (which was yes movie convientant).

Elektra (the movie) on the other hand was just...weird

are touched on in the film, but in my opinion, they are communicated in a superficial way. Just mentioning them does not mean they resonate with the viewer. For me the strongest character in DD is Elektra - but she was not supposed to be the center of the film. All of this guy's films are superficial. He has no subtlety, it's all about fake coolness and not connecting with the characters in any real way. Normally, I disagree with Harry, but his review correctly pointed this out about this director in my opinion. It's all style and no substance. I think Del Toro's films have been guilty of this as well (I haven't seen Pan's), but not to the degree of Johnson's.

It had a few minor flaws, but I could get past them. I'm a reader of the classic Ghost Rider and the revamp from the early 90s - this was a decent translation to the big screen while still reaching out to an audience who might not know the character.

I also need to say I now have a huge crush on Eva Mendez. Every scene she was in she exuded sex. Holy mother of God, she's hot.

Cage did a decent job in this rold. I'm not a fan of his, but with the material at hand, he did great.

Just got back from seeing it and it was actually pretty good. The acting certainly wasn't abyssmal, and in fact Cage did a pretty good job. The decision to take the best parts of the multiple Ghost Rider stories/characters while sticking to Johnny Blaze as the actual Ghost Rider character was a good one. If anything, it's biggest flaw is the same as any superhero film where you have to tell the origin story: too much time spent explaining the character's powers/background. My biggest gripes with it are actually pretty minor and come from being a long time GR fan. I didn't mind the Unseen getting their asses kicked easily: they filled the mindless cannon fodder thug role decently enough, but I would have liked oooler henchmen. With all the Ghost Rider villains, they could have used something more interesting. WARNING SLIGHTLY SPOILERIFIC: I would have liked to have seen Blackheart in his comics demon form, at least for the final fight. I didn't mind his human form much, but I've always kind of liked his big scary demon look. All in all: it's not a bad movie. MSJ did an okay job with what is essentially a fairly goofy Marvel character and managed to make a fun movie. It's not Shakespeare by any standard, but it certainly ain't Uwe Boll either.

I just got home from seeing it, and like some of the other fellas here, I actually liked it. The things I liked and disliked about the movie were things I liked and disliked about the comics. None of the villains they can come up with will ever be as cool looking or badass as the Rider. I do agree that the 3 henchman were just kind of there waiting to be killed, and I would have liked them to cut back on the campy one liners. But Ghost Rider and the effects looked good to me, Nick Cage did a good job of selling Johny Blaze. I hate to say it, but I really think Harry wants to torpedo the film and basically put the word out to all his reviewers- trash the movie. Why I dunno, maybe because one of his friends had a badass Gr screenplay that was passed over in favor of this? Kind of like how he wanted all his boys to universally come all over themselves over Peter Jackson's self indulgent and way overrated King Kong and trash Narnia ( another movie I actually liked).. Listen,it aint a great flick ( not as good as Spidey 2, but better than Daredevil and the Punisher), and I'm tired of comic book movies at this point, but it's a pretty damn good popcorn movie. And frankly if you don't think a guy with a flaming skull riding a kickass flaming bike isn't cool, then you need to go be a florist or something.

and I completely agree with Volstaff. I thought Nicholas Cage played the whole thing great. His acting while undergoing the transformation was spot on. He looked like he was in pain, but damn if he didn't look like he was enjoying it too. The madness of it all came through perfectly. As for the Blackheart, he was good. What the hell do people want? He was the son of the Devil and that's what he looked like. Pale, dark hair and eyes, black clothes...these emo dorks look like HIM (they want to look evil and outcast), not the other way around. And yes, the 3 element demons got their asses handed to them, but that's because they figured they could take Ghost Rider, no problem. You can see it in any bar on a Saturday night, guy gets drunk, guy mouths off to someone because he thinks he can take them, guy gets knocked out. These 4 villains were young, inexperienced, and unprepared, and they got beat. It was a great movie, and a hell of a lot of fun. I had to tell my son (who's 7½) to keep quiet a few times because he kept saying "Whoa, that is so cool" quite loudly while I was thinking the same thing. The flaming skull looked just like what it was supposed to look like...a flaming skull. I don't know what you could have done different or how you could have improved it. It came off like they lifted it right out of the comic book. Overall, I thought it was very well done. Cage, Sam Elliot, Peter Fonda...great acting all around. You know, if they bring out a comic book movie that everyone actually likes (other then Spidey) I might have a heart attack right in my chair.

And this film honestly has a "flaming initials" scene?! That's, what, a dozen superhero movies to date that've had the hero's initals or logo outlined in flame? Does ANYONE think that's cool anymore? The funniest version of this was in The Punisher, where Thomas Jane blows up a bunch of cars, and we see an overhead shot of the flaming debris in (yes) the shape of his chest-logo skull. So, what, he spent an entire afternoon carefully arranging cars in the parking lot until he was sure they'd form his logo when they blew up? Who was he trying to impress with that, God? Random traffic helicopters?

A bunch of people legitimately enjoyed X3. I was one. I think most of the problem with X3 is actually with the director, Ratner, an incredibly successful director.

FF is an OK film. It's worth a rental or watching on HBO...or perhaps even a matinee. It's not great, but reviewers here (and just about everywhere) cannot review "nerd-centric" movies in measured tones.

Oh yeah and this movie is NOT THAT BAD!

I even think it's better than the Hulk. Like the Hulk, the ending sucks. But it seemed to me they tried to create a complete character and it is actually pretty faithful to the different incarnations of Ghost Rider.

No one is playing their part 100% straight - it is meant to be campy and they know it. It's really mostly an action comedy with a few scares thrown in. Cage is as good in this as he was in National Treasure, he's deadpan and quirky and when he's over the top it works with the story. Slowest parts are the action scenes unfortunately, but they are still entertaining. There was only one moment I hated for being so juvenile, but all in all, pretty entertaining.
Enough with reviewers slamming on X3 already.

It was a good movie. Anything wrong with it could be laid at Bryan Singer's feet for what he set up with the first two movies. Ratner just did the best he could with an already flawed trilogy.

Don't know what Harry and Missyworm were smoking, but I found this movie to perfectly capture the tone of the comics. The Ghost Rider comics were FULL of crappy dialog, bad puns, and lame plot devices. I EXPECT that from the movie. Who the hell watches "Ghost Rider" expecting "My Dinner with Andre, the Flaming Skull"? This isn't arthouse film making. It's a 2hr romp thru a ridiculous yet fun comic book character's world. So far, I've enjoyed most Marvel Comic-to-film. They are far from "Seven Samurai" but they are a LOT better than the primordial ooze spit out by Luca$ and $peilberg these days.

Cage did an awesome job with what he was handed. To much comedy? Yes!!! The y should have watched the Blade films then watched Constatine and said now do what they did with Blade 1 and 2 (not a fan of much from 3) and embrace your inner Constantine and you've got it. I mean really, Blackheart should have been played just like The lead singer from Bush's charactor in Constatine with more meaness and hatred and the devil in that film was not bad either.

"'Ghostrider 2' to be directed by Robert Rodriquez" I didn't much like Daredevil. I liked this flick better, but probably only because GR is probably my fave Marvel Character. There was good stuff in it. The emerging from the water scene was perfect GR. The helicopter scene again was perfect GR. The non-fight sequences with GR in them were great. The fights were entirely lacking in imagination. Nick was fine. Sam was fine, though poorly used. REALLY poorly used. GR's bike sounded like a 5 alarm chili fart. Ending was HORRIBLE. Fire MSJ, get an audio guy that knows what COOL sounds like, and do GR2.

Somethings work on film, some inherently don't. Oh, and that Flash movie that they're thinking of making? Gonna suck. How the fuck could a movie about a guy that runs fast be even remotely entertaining? That Wonder Woman movie that Whedon finally came to his senses and bailed on? Gonna suck. If they retain ANY traditional elements of Wonder Woman, deflecting shit with her bracelets, lassoing people, flying an invisible fucking jet...wearing that dumbass costume...it's gonna be unintentionally funny from start to finish. If they do away with all that stuff...It's Buffy the Vampire slayer fighting criminals instead of vampires. Iron Man has the potential to be watchable, but in the end it will be Fantastic Four but with more interesting CGI. A Dr Strange movie? Are you on COKE?! Spiderman, X-Men, Batman and Superman work because they are cultural ICONS and (with the exception of Superman) are as interesting outside the suit as inside, and present personal experiences we can indentify with. Screwing up and making amends, being persecuted for being different, feeling alienated, struggling with desires for vengence. Compare that with building a robot suit because you're crippled, or being the princess of an amazon people who lassos people in a pageant costume, or being a stunt driver cursed into transforming into a bike rider with a FUCKING FLAMING SKELETON HEAD. Surely people must realize these things are too aburd to be made into movies that can be taken seriously...

Certainly not the major trainwreck it could have been, Elliot rocks in everything he does, Cage is ok, MendeS is a pedestrian but i don't mind seeing her cross the street every once in a while.. Took my wife and 9 yo nephew to it and he and I were of the same opinion it was ok, not great, but a decent waste of a couple of hours and we were glad we went... OH... and to the choad who said "i sure as shit aint plunking down 13 bux to see some kids movie".. you're right.. you shouldn't go see it because kids will enjoy it.. because that just wouldn't be manly enough.. if I see a kids movie, chicks wont want to touch your dingdong later in life. I just think its funny you protest about seeing a PG13 movie, and in the same breathe delcaring your undying love for fucking comic book cannon... go listen to your drowning pool mp3s and masturbate some more, that ought to make you feel better.

when it comes to this film i'm torn somewhat. this film is directed by mark steven johnson whom took a second-tier character named daredevil and turned him into Ben ( American Hugh Grant ) Affleck. I actually fell asleep during daredevil and this was in a packed cinema! However, how can a film containing both Nicholas Cage and Sam Elliot be appaling? can an actual Ghost Rider fan ( like myself! )whom has seen the film and place an opinion. i'd really appreciate it. thanks!

Ghost Rider is a tidy little piece of comic entertainment that kicks X-Men 3's bloody ass and easily surpasses Fantastic 4 with its simplistic but cohesive plot, strong effects and fun performances. This isn't a masterpiece, but it's not meant to be. Anyone with realistic expectations and enough intellectual ability to treat this this film as the campy sideshow it is will have a great time.

I shoulda known better after DAREDEVIL, but the trailers for this were so hilarious I really thought this would be good for some laughs. Yes, DAREDEVIL was asinine (if the director's cut is still about a chubby blind guy in a red gimp suit fighting a guy who flicks deadly peanuts at people then no, I don't believe you that it's good) but I figured it might be more entertaining if the hero was a burning skeleton who swings around like spider-man WHILE RIDING A MOTORCYCLE. This is the laughfest that the trailer promised us but, sadly, no dice. It's just a boring, 100% imagination free love story between two personality-less "characters," punctuated by long, awkward failed attempts at humor. Even the dude in the spider-man t-shirt at my showing didn't laugh once. There are lots of effects but they aren't all that funny and not even the skull looks real. Maybe they shoulda CGId some flames on a puppet.

It WAS kind of funny when his dad died, but not THAT funny.

I have a question for you comic strip readers. Does it bother you when they do a movie like this, where they have this premise that it's about a skeleton on a motorcycle, but then they are embarrassed to actually make a movie about that without having five or six scenes where the characters make fun of how silly it is? It seems to me like they are telling the audience they are stupid for wanting to see a movie about what they just made a movie about.

I don't understand where Master Worm is coming from though because I thought both X-Man 3 and The Punisher were enjoyable movies. This is nowhere near the same category. It is arguably slightly less asinine than DAREDEVIL, but more boring than ELEKTRA. Not as bad as SPAWN or BATMAN AND ROBIN. Not fit to wipe the ass of BLADE or BARBARELLA. I haven't seen POPEYE in a long time so I'm not sure how it compares to that. And I don't think there's a Snoopy movie but this is probaly worse than the Snoopy movie if there is one. thanks.

p.s. maybe tied with GARFIELD 1 (I haven't seen part 2)

I don't have a problem with Ghost Rider as a premise or look. If handled with actual menace (like it's supposed to), proper lighting, some practical special effects (like Blade 2 or The Crow) a biker with a burning skull dishing out vengeance is cool. It doesn't even have to deal with spandex cheese and could've been the next Blade. Handled by a fucking cheeseball like Mark Steven Johnson on the other hand....well you know the rest.

Well that is my complaint, it's not bad enough to be enjoyable and definitely not good enough to be enjoyable. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie though. It's making a surprising amount of money out of the gate, but I will be shocked if "the general public loves it" like you said. The group I saw it with (who unlike me probaly expected to like it) all came out yawning.

I'm not saying it's as embarassingly stupid as some comic book movies such as SPAWN, BATMAN AND ROBIN and DAREDEVIL, although that thing about the jellybeans was pushing it. And the monkeys. And the magic 8 ball. But for me personally there were no interesting characters, no memorable action scenes, no impressive special effects, none of the things I look for in a motion picture of this type.

As I wrote in my review, BLADE proves that you shouldn't lower the standards for something like this and say it's okay 'cause it's just a comic book movie. Because Blade the blaxploitation half-vampire super hero should be almost as silly as the burning skeleton motorcycle man, but they treated the concept seriously, created great characters and put them in a captivating story full of classic action scenes and quotable dialogue. And then they arguably improved on it in the sequel. And even the not as good third one is more fun than GHOST RIDER. If Blade was in this movie he'd laugh at Ghost Rider's motorcycle, call him a cracker, then rip out his spine and use it to eviscerate the evil rock band that's after him. The movie would be over in less than ten minutes, including the end credits. And it would be a better movie.

But that's just me, I'm glad you got your money's worth, thanks for the comments Mike and you too Neo Zeed.

I judge comicbbookmovies by how faithful they are to the comic they're based on or inspired by. Unfortunately, by that standard Supergirl, a stupid movie based on a stupid comic book, scores high. And the original TMNT was a masterpiece. *** I was a '60s teenage Marvelite and a Marvel fan in the '70s and Ghost Rider was never a great character. Now, if they made a Killraven, Shang Chi, Adam Warlock, Deathlok movie - maybe even Omega or a Roger Rabbit meets CGI Howard the Duck, I'd be interested. Even that pitiful Man-Thing movie was faithful, considering the series was a horror anthology and the lead character was a retarded mute who responded to emotions and set scared people on fire. Even though the Mike Ploog drawn stories were stylish and the Isabella story where GR was redeemed by the unidentified Jesus roman a clef was inspiring, in general most of the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider could be summed up by that notorious two page Don Perlin spread of the Rider weaving through freeway traffic. Even in a 25cent comic, a two page spread of a freeway was a rip off. But if people really want to gripe, consider this: the villain here is the devil's son. Marvel had a comic called Son of Satan. Who wasn't a My Chemical Romance member in the Trenchcoat Mafia. No, I haven't seen Ghost Rider, and won't until it airs on TBS next year, but by the 'how faithful is it to the comics rule', if they screwed up Daimon Hellstrom that bad, how good can it be?

Mebbe some spoilers... read at yer own risk... in agreement with AgentSith, Johnnycool, and superninja on a few things. Listen, I read ALL seventy-some issues of the comic a few months ago in anticipation of this flick, and lemme tell ya, this flick is FAR less cheezy than the comics. Don't get me wrong, the comics for their time, were good. I can't believe they got a "good guy sold his soul to the devil" past the comics code, AT ALL, let alone did what they did. But this flick, by the (comic)books, would've been a fluffy haired Luke Skywalker lookin' pretty boy Johnny Blaze against the "Trapster", and the "Water Wizard". What a lark! While a lot about this movie could have been done better, especially in the audio department, it brought the right GR to the screen. The one we wanted to be at 8 years old scared of the "monster" in our closet. That Hulk-type alter-ego that made us scarier than the monster, itself. Yep, the origin was almost as bad as Daredevils(movie), the ending was flat out STUPID, but GR(the being) is everything I'd imagined him to be as a kid. As stupid as the bit in the "swamp" was, those were the things going on in my head when that "monster" was hiding in my closet. I wanted to change into that being that would scare the "monsters" as much as they scared me. "oh, no, I'm drowning, whatever shall I do... mwa ha ha ha ha!!!" It was really surprising that the rest of the flick couldn't have been better. Why does he suffer the wound of a knife, but the PD riddles him with holes, and it doesn't do anything? Actually, this happens in the comic too, without much explanation. Some dumb stuff, some unimaginative fight scenes, but when GR is cruising around, it's the GR we always wished the COMICS could be. Flipping off cops, laughing at authority. Being the REAL sheriff in town. Let's hope GR2(if it gets made) better lives up in the parts that this flick fails so miserably.

I did bring my son, he did think it was cool, and he did think the villains were creepy. But there isn't much I even find terrifying at the movies anymore. Also, I'm guessing you would plunk down 13 bucks to see kid's some movies that he thought were cool, such as any of the Spiderman films, or the first three Star Wars, The Iron Giant or the original Planet of the Apes. I think Ghost Rider was a good movie, and a majority of the people are going to agree.

It wasn't Nick, at least not specifically. It's by far his biggest opening ever. The GR concept appeals to a lot of people, even if they never picked up the book. I mean, there aren't many concepts that carry the cool factor like a vengeance demon riding a flaming motorcycle. Put the rider on the poster, along with Mendez's magnificent mammarage, and you don't need Nick there.
