Learn from history, fanboys. After Batman 89, Burton was called "The man who saved Batman." After Returns, most eschewed him, feeling he had gotten too dark and was missing the point of Batman with that killing and stuff. Then, loathe as we all are to admit it now, Even Joel Schumacker was once hailed. He pulled back, and made a Batman movie that at least was kinda fun to watch with Forever, and it pulled the franchise out of a financial slump, topping the numbers of the second one and getting closer to the first one. We all know what happened next. I'm just saying, don't think Nolan won't screw this up. It seems that these directors that get a second turn "At Bat" make their second film to personally connected, and start screwing it up. What could go wrong? remember how Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul were "plain clothes" in Begins? Don't you think it would suck balls if they did the same with Joker?

You are bang on when you say you can't see Eckhart carrying the villain role for #3. I am disappointed with this news simply because I have been impressed with Eckhart ZERO times. I really hope #3 will have Penguin or Riddler to take away from two-faces screen time.

Nolan is a different director than Burton and Schumacher. Is he better? I'd say definitely. I think that he has a fundamental understanding of Batman (as evidenced by Begins). Stylistically he fits in with Batman better than the other directors. He's also not a guy who seems to inject the personal into his work (unlike Burton and Schumacher)

He won't have white skin, per se, but blotchy, hastily caked on pancake makeup. His lips will be red, lipstick, but smeared across his mouth. He'll have dark Goth eyes. Overall, his makeup will be messy. His outfit will be all velour, velvet, dark, dark purple and green, the purple almost black. He'll have Batman Returns Penguin black teeth. The Joker as the Crow. It's gonna be awful. And the Batsuit will suck as usual.

I think the thing that made begins so successful was how they found a way to ground batman in reality. It would be a shame to see them break from that in the second one.

I'll agree, Begins is not a great film, but what it did was get me excited about the possibility of what comes next. I walked out of the movie with a lot of excitement about the Joker and the future of the franchise.

Nolan seems to have a knack for unusual casting choices. But I think the way he chooses to portray his characters (i.e. Batman Begins) is what helps to make those choices inspired. Much like Ledger, it will be interesting to see what Eckhart can do with the role. Oh, and more Tumbler please. ;^)

I also could buy her as an assistant DA. Now if only Nolan could go back and reshoot the scenes in BB and edit Maggie over Holmes, then it would be perfect. And anyone who thinks Maggie Gylenhall is not hot hasn't seen Donnie Darko (especially her Halloween outfit) or Secretary.

Even though I think this choice is wrong, I also know that come first viewing of the film myself and all nay sayers will be eating our words. is anyone else sick of people knocking begins? people must forget how important the relationship between dent, gordon, and batman is. it is essential in the history of batman. the simple fact that nolan is doing this makes him the best candidate for directing. his casting is nearly flawless. the only thing i have seen that is questionable thus far is katie holmes, and thats already been taken care. aaron eckhart is perfect for this role. it will be a defining role for him, just as the joker will be for ledger. and just as batman is and will continue to be for bale. eckhart and ledger are phenomenal actors. this movie is going to be amazing. and gyllenhaal is very very good actress aswell...leaps and bounds ahead of holmes anyway. and i can almost guarantee that joker will kill the rachel dawes character in TDK. its already been mentioned on BOF. and if you read the killing joke (the one book heath ledger was given to study) you would understand why. speaking of which. i suggest many of you go read some classic batman graphic novels or series. then maybe you will learn to appreciate nolans batman. the man is doing a damn fine job if you ask me.

ive watched so many comic movies that have been 100% loyal to the comics from which they came. oh wait, no i havent. cause it isnt possible. lets see here im pretty sure ive read more than one two face origin, and more than one batman origin, and more than one robin origin. even if nolan did stick with one story...lets take the long halloween for example...there would be so much that is key to batman that is left out. thats thing about film, and the thing that nolan is doing so well, there isnt a whole lot of room to work with. because its a FUCKING MOVIE. nolan is doing a damn good job of getting the basics in there. tim burton pretty much did a shitpoor job at that.

im pretty sure you arent understanding what im saying here. and im pretty sure youre showing a total lack of understanding of film. how can you take an entire movie franchise and make it completely loyal to a comic book character. especially when its a character like batman that has so many stories arent always 100 percent concistent with other stories. theyre making a movie here....not a word for word comic book adaptation. it would be stupid for them to do so. sin city was about as close as its ever gotten and it wasnt even close. and dont tell me i have a lack of comic book understanding from reading one post. go back down to your parents basement and play world of warcraft please. or at least think before you talk. it isnt easy goin from comic books to film. they are two mediums that demand very different things. its really hard for movies to be anywhere near as detailed as comics. and you have to realize to that these movies are huge blockbuster films that are reaching more than just fanboys like you and i, but also stupid jocks that dont know shit about batman. you have to give these guys some slack. all im sayin is considering what nolan has to work...just the fact that he has to put batman on screen...hes doing a damn fine job. suck it!

About The Prestige. That ending was a complete cop out. I am not saying you cant like it, you are more than welcome to and I dont think you are wrong for doing so, but from a storytelling standpoint its cheating. Imagine if at the end of Saving Private Ryan, As Tom Hanks is dying Ryan is about to get shot by a Nazi soldier, with his last breath Hanks summons a dragon that swoops from the heavens and kills the Nazis. Ridiculous right? Well thats exactly the kind of out of nowhere sentiment that The Prestige ended on. And saying "but they showed you the hats to set you up for it!" doesn't excuse it. yes they did show us the hats and I knew immediately what they meant, but it was already too late int eh film to be introducing some wonderous cloning machine. All That is also ignoring the fact of the coincidence that Bale, while trying to send Jackman on a wild goose chase, just HAPPENS to send him to the one place on Earth where an electic cloning machine is possible. Nolan invented his own logic to end the film, or hell maybe the writer of the book did, whoever did it was cheating. For another example of this magical logic inventor check out every five minutes of Lady in the Water.

I know what your saying man, and Im not going to call names. Yes there are many iterations of every comic book character, but there are some things that remain constant in every good iteration. Now im gonna be up front and say Im not a fan of comic book films I think they are almost always disappointing. With that said I think Nolan understand Batman himself all right. WHat i'm not sure he quite gets its the world in which Batman dwells. This is a comic book world. Even in the most gritty of Frank Miller fantasies Batman is a comic book. His world, while not Schumacher-esque at all, has an element of a world gone twisted to it. Gotham is not New York City, it isnt Chicago, it isn't London. Gotham is a city that can only exist on the page, a GOTHIC (get it?) masterpiece in and of itself. Good and evil exists in Gotham city. it's a place where villains wear costumes and terrorize the city, and a man in a restrictive bat costume can single handedly do the job an entire police force can't. Where buildings outside of anything we have here exist. And it CERTAINLY doesn't have a yellow and brown color scheme. This is where I felt Nolan erred. Nolan invented his own Gotham city, and you know what thats fine, its his movie. But dont get upset at me because I am disappointed with Nolans revision of it, because it IS in fact a REVISION. Its not the definitve Batman by any means. I just want people to have a little understanding as to why I might feel that way and not get all bent out of shape like i just ripped the Bible in half. I also greatly disliked Goyers script which absolutely beat the shit out of you with the fact that the theme he is working with is fear. fear. fear. fear. fear. fear. fear. FEAR!!!! I would probably have like dNolans Batman more is he had dispensed with the supervillains, since it was obvious at this point int eh story that he had no particular affinity for using them all that much. And just elongated the overly short training sequence and batmans early time fighting crime in the cape.

Hey there skippy, um, yeah, you might want to consider the source material before you start ranting again. Before there was a film there was a novel called "The Prestige" by Christopher Priest that dealt with identity and perception and the sacrifices that people make. While Nolan took some liberties, he remained true to the thrust of the plot and especially true to the author's larger themes. You might want to familiarize yourself with a film's source material before you go posting retarded comments for the entire world to read. Put away the dvd of Aliens Vs Predator and pick up a book. Start with something by Mr. Priest, or Gene Wolfe even. You might learn a thing or two.

let me make what i am trying to say a little more simple to understand here. ok, warner brothers is redoing the batman franchise (thank God cause the burton/schumacher one sucked). were lookin at two more movies at least to finish out this franchise. so youve got christopher nolan who i know is a big batman fan. hes excited about making these batman films and doing batman right. but, hes only got 3 films to do it with. theres all these things about batman that make him so awesome that have to be done. theres no way that you can stay completely loyal to the comics because theres so many essential things that you have to put in there. therefore nolan and anybody helpin him write these three movies have to be creative come up with a new story that hits all that essential stuff but does it in a way that it works for cinema in 3 two hour segments. i didnt mean before that anything key was left out of the long halloween. what i was saying is that if you based a franchise off of that one book, there would be other things very important to the world of batman that would never be touched. christopher nolan is taking things from many different defining books in the batman world (year one, long halloween, killing joke) and hes meshing them together, and also putting his own new twist on it. its almost like reading a brand new story. i mean look at the new frank miller/jim lee batman and robin series. they dont line up with dark victory hardly at all. but the essential themes are there in both. thats what nolan is doing. hes nailing those essential themes, and compromising because it has to be done on screen. as far as Nolans Gotham goes though, I think youre right. But I think the whole fear thing was important in Begins because it showed Bruce Waynes struggle (in a nutshell, because it had to be done in two hours). Batman Begins was important because it focused on Batman. The films that came before almost always focused on the villains. I loved that about begins. and I know nolan will continue to do it right with the next two.

Some of thats tuff is pretty irrefutable. Bruce Wayne is in fact the most intelligent man in the world, he's the reed richards of the DCU. It's something the movie just gives you none of. He also happens to be the greatest human fighter, something he wouldn't have become from the half asses training sequence. The fight camera was awful, if you know anything about cinematography or if you've have ever seen an oriental film you would know there is no need for the camera to be that choppy.

I definitely think the whole detective part of Batman is missing in these films. But I also think Nolans left room to take care of that in TDK. Lets just wait and see. I dont think Nolans Batman is perfect, I dont think it will ever be perfect. Just like not everyone writes Batman perfect in the comics. Hes been written so many different ways. Its just hard to make everyone happy. But I think Nolan is doing a great job. Hes been the best thus far anyway. And the whole reading batman for a few months thing hurt Kipkinkel, it cut deep. Ive grown up on the character, im very partial to him. im sorry if you feel as if im a novice when it comes to the dark knight. im ashamed of myself. haha.

At first I was mad about Batman begins Carrot, but now i see it's just another iteration of Batman out of many. It may not be my ideal batman but it is Nolans film and at least he didnt rape the characters in any way. I alos look forward to the Dark Knight and I think so far everyone involved has the stuff and Im glad to see Jonathan Nolan writing it instead of Goyer. Aldentre are you saying that nothign Strangeco said is true simply because The Prestige is also a book? Thats funny because I could have sworn I watched a movie and given that its the movie that we are reviewing Strangeco has every right to expose its faults whether they were in the book or not. Remember adaptation in and of itself is an art. I cant speak for the book because maybe it established better that these characters existed in a world where electric cloning is possible, but Nolan certainly did not. Instead he pulled an ending out of nowhere that was an all too convenient way to explain the otherwise very entertaining preceedings. Everything strangeco said is true, if you disagree try arguing him on his points rather than making sweeping statements and ending them with OH SNAP! before you can even get a response.

With all due respect, you guys are wrong about Nolan and 'The Prestige'. The Nolan brothers crafted, in my opinion, the best film of 2006. Yes it is a 'twist' movie but it is so flawlessly executed, it practically brings tears to my eyes. I know you two are trolling and I am wasting my time, but I have to respond. Here is my long, point by point refution of your 'interpretation' of the move. SPOILERS!!!!!! 1.'THE MACHINE' IS A STUPID EX DESU MACHINA MACGUFFIN. I can understand that the machine is probably the most difficult thing to buy in this film. The fact is if you cannot buy into it, your liable to reject the film as a whole. It may seem out of place but remember, Tesla was and still IS regarded as a modern day electrical magician. On his death the US government took all his inventions and classified them. I doubt they would have bothered if was you average sparky. Although The Machine is the least realistic part of the film, it's vital in exploring the film's broader themes. 2. WHY DIDN'T HE USE THE MACHINE TO CLONE HIS WIFE? The machine isn't a cloning device in the way you think it is. We only see three things were duplicated in the film. One inanimate object and two live ones. Do you really think he'd want to duplicate the bones of his long dead wife? Maybe you are into necrophilia but I doubt he was. Even if he could clone her, I don't think he would. His obsession was so advanced ALL he cared about was getting revenge. 3. BALE CONVENIENTLY TURNS UP FOR THE LAST PERFORMANCE. No not conveniently, Jackman KNEW he would turn up at some point, because Bale was obsessed with working out how the trick was constructed, as it was seemingly impossible. That's why he said he would only EVER do 100 performaces of the trick. To flush bale out and to frame him. The film is really about obsession. Bale's obsession with becoming a master magician and Jackman's obsession with getting revenge for his wife's death. It explores the extent to which these obsessions harm their families and themselves. 5. THE ENDING IS BAD. IT'S CHEATING I accept that the whole Tesla angle is hard to grasp but I don't see it as cheating. It may be 'out of that world' but as it fits the internal logic of that world, I am able to forgive it. Again Bale's wild goose chase is carefully contructed. He only chooses Tesla because he knows Jackman is following him. So when he goes to the world fair, he thinks why not foist him on Tesla, not realising how much power that man really has. These 'reasons' why the film is 'bad', are pretty weak. I can understand you not liking the film. But to suggest it was sloppily put together does a great disservice to the Nolans. This film has less plot holes than most films Slightly more on-topic, I am looking forward to the next Batman. However I hope Nolan spends some time learning to shoot action. I was less than convinced in Begins with how that was shot.

Unexpected, but good. I would have preferred Liev Schreiber, though. From THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and other performances, I think Screiber has shown that he can play scary and dark. Eckhart is kind of glib; a good actor, but a bit smarmy. Still, he is a far better choice than some others I have heard suggested. Anyway, I am a fan of Nolan's work. He is hardly infallible, but then, who is? I am looking forward to his next Batman movie. For those who think Begins was not fantastical enough, I think that there will be an escalation of the theatricality and freakiness of the villains, as was suggested by the end of the movie in the exchange between Batman and Gordon.

Your "proof" that Nolan will "screw this up" is bogus and ill-informed. For one thing, Batman Returns was NOT a bad film...a bit overstuffed, perhaps, but certainly NOT hurt by the dark tone and "killings". You then try to make the case that batman Forever was superior to Returns simply because it made alot of money...well thank you very much Mr. Executive, but that movie was still inferior to both of Burton's entries. I can't figure out why people can't see Batman Forever for what it was...the first nail in the franchise's coffin. All the cheesieness, campiness, and obsession with "neon and nipples" that ruined Batman and Robin were present in Schumacher's first outing, albeit in a manner that was overshadowed by the star power on display. But its a lousy film, and there is no doubt in my mind that Nolan will give us something much better. But hey, knock yourself out watching pace-killing flashbacks and bland lighting of every Wayne Manor scene. After all, I'm sure Schumacher needs the money to help destroy Gaiman's Sandman anyway. Then again, maybe I just hate Batman Forever because only a fey fairy like Schumacher would sadistically waste Drew Barrymore and Debi Mazar on throwaway roles...despite both of them them looking as hot as they ever have. I'm sure their having tits and a vagina had something to do with it......but thats not the point. The point is: Nolan WILL pull this off. Unless of course, you prefer BF to BB...in which case...your disappointment will be our celebration.

Edward Norton is still my favorite for this role, just because he can do nice guy and ridiculously evil and we know it, but I don't think for a minute that Nolan didn't bring the Two-Face thing into account when he tested Eckhart. If Nolan thinks Eckhart can play bad guy, then Eckhart can play bad guy, just like Ledger can play sociopathic if Nolan says so. That's how much I trust in this guy. Also, even if Rachel Dawes isn't really necessary, I'd much rather have a genuinely talented actress like Gyllenhaal play her this time out than the stiff-as-a-board Katie Holmes.

As long as Nolan hits these IMPORTANT marks in The Dark Knight, I'll be pleased and thrilled. (ahem) 1. The Batman does not kill. 2. The Batman is the World's Greatest Detective. 3. The Joker was 'born' in a vat of chemicals and NOT by mutilation. He does NOT have a permanent grin ala Sardonicus or Gywnpaine. His skin is bleached white, his lips red, his hair green. 4. DON'T kill off the villains in every movie. Send them to Arkham. (see number 1) 5. Let the Joker BE the Joker...deliver on the Escalation you hinted at in the first film. 6. KEEP building the Gordon/Batman Alfred/Bruce relationships. Beautiful in the first film...don't break the backone of the Batman mythos. 7. ONE Villain per movie PLEASE. I don't mind if Cobblepot makes a cameo as an arms-dealer/smuggler/criminal kingpin at his Ice Berg Lounge, but only ONE main villain per story. Looking forward to it.

I think the Joker will be a twisted murdering bastard in this movie but he will were a mask to start with. Batman, Gordon and Dent will all work together to bring him down which will climax with the Joker falling into those chemicals. Its the end of the movie were we see the real Joker (all scared and burnt with parts of the mask he was wearing stuck to his face) in court. this is were he will get his revenge on at least one of the charactors responsable for doing this to him i.e Dent. He will throw acid and you know the rest. This would set up the third movie, with Dent now Twoface, twisted and bitter towards Batman for not being there when he needed him. The Joker will escape and it will be a three way battle in the third with all three fighting each other.

The good "Eckhart" lines are already taken. For what my cent and a half is worth, Eckhart sounds like a decent choice for Harvey, whatever that character's role is gonna be. And, to somebody's point way back above, I think having a Joker who was still psychotic, but not so "clown-like" in appearance could work. I dig the "standard" appearance of the Joker in the comics, but for the film, I like the idea but wouldn't be sold on it until I saw some concept images.

The studio execs said to nolan, "good, now do it again, but more so!" and the fans who liked Begins but admit it had flaws are hoping those flaws will be reduced and ironed out. I don't see that happening. I see them, once again, INTENSIFYING. And they will, once again, get so bad that the fanbase turns it's back on the franchise and it will be in trouble again. Ofcourse, there are some fans who think Begins was perfectly flawless and Nolan can do no wrong. I don't know what kind of crack they're smoking.

No one serious is calling Batman Begins flawless, as that kind of hyperbole should only be applied to maybe a handful of films ever made. However, I completely disagree that Batman Begins was deeply flawed. I'd like you to point me to an action film in the last decade that is as polished, well executed and thrilling. Considering how many times Batman has been reinterpreted as a character within several different mediums, there is no true interpretation of Batman and the fans are never going to agree on one definitive presentation. To me, Batman Begins was like watching an amplified version of Batman: Year One. The muted yellows and "realistic" vibe come right out of that book, which is fitting since this is Batman's origin. As far as getting the character right and whether Burton or Nolan got it closer, this has been endlessly debated so I'll only say one thing. Keaton's Batman did it for revenge, and Bale's Batman does it for justice. That alone brings Nolan's Batman closer to how he is in the comics. Bale may not yet seem like he's reached the supergenius World's Greatest Detective level, but Alfred was bringing Keaton cookies and milk in the Batcave. Batman Begins was about as good as movies got in 2005. I also don't agree with the idea that the villains are more important than Batman. Nicholson seems to have more screen time than Keaton in the original Batman, but it was fairly equal. In Returns, there are 30 minutes chunks at a time where Batman doesn't even show up on screen. Instead, we get the admittedly awesome Christopher Walken in the made-up Max Schrek character. The liberties they took with R'as al Gul/Ducard or Rachel Dawes (who actually reminded me of the girl from Mask of the Phantasm) are nothing compared to the sweeping shorthand that Burton and Schumacher made of the original material. There is no reason to expect Nolan to drop the ball and produce anything worse than Batman Begins. I'm not too crazy about Eckhart though. Can anyone direct me towards a great Eckhart performance that shows he can do it? I really, really hope that Nolan comes along and proves me dead wrong. It's possible. I was even optimistic when Heath Ledger was cast, even though I can think of a slew of actors with better resumes who look closer to the part (Viggo Mortensen would be my pick.) I just haven't seen anything from Eckhart that stands out as a commanding or definitive performance. Bale had American Psycho. Ledger has gotten a lot of acclaim. Oldman, Neeson, Freeman, Hauer, Caine, Wilkinson, Murphy and Watanabe... That's an incredible supporting cast. But Aaron Eckhart? I thought Thank You For Smoking was one of the most limp and watered down attempts at satire in recent memory. The average South Park episode has more balls. It's not exactly edgy to lampoon smoking these days. I wouldn't mind if the movie was funny, but most of the jokes fell flat and the whole thing was so formulaic. Speaking of formulaic we have Suspect Zero, which would have been unwatchable without Ben Kingsley. The rest of the movie was the same tedious serial killer procedural nonsense we've been getting for years now. Eckhart obviously did not stand out in either of these tepid films. When you look at the rest of his resume: Paycheck, The Black Dahlia, The Wicker Man, The Core, Nurse Betty, The Missing, you see a bunch of crappy movies. He's got a couple in there that may be good and seem to get acclaim that I haven't seen: In the Company of Men, Erin Brokovich, The Pledge (have seen this actually, don't remember Eckhart) and Your Friends and Neighbors. Oh yeah, and he played a football player in Any Given Sunday. Whoop dee doo. I wouldn't be so annoyed if he looked anything close to the part, but he doesn't. He was getting bandied around for Captain America over on those boards, I could see that (I'd cast Peter Krause.. and Klaus Kinski's skeleton as Red Skull!) but he's just so smarmy looking. He almost looks like a Mormon. He just doesn't look like Harvey Dent. There are lots of great actors who could do more with the role. Benicio Del Toro? Craig Bierko? Clive Owen? Ah well, it's a moot point now..

Is it really a surprise or luck that Bale showed up to the biggest magic show ever seen? Or that he tried to figure out the meaning? He already had gone backstage to mess up the act before, no point in seeing why he wouldn't try again. I think the twins figured out their trick years before, but waited until they needed it, or could at least correctly find a stage and present it in a controlled environment. You're different paths to other possible endings simply don't strike me as entertaining, or reaching the same levels of irony. The supernatural element of seeing out-of-this-world scientific magic was quite a large draw to what makes the film unique. Why is it luck that they are twins, or that Jackman is using a fake identity again?

For one, he gave us Katie Holmes as the made up character Rachel Dawes instead of giving us Talia Al Ghul which would have been a much more dramatic punch in the storyline. Then, he follows up that mistake with choosing Heath Ledger for the most iconic villain in the Batman's rogue's gallery. That was plain idiotic, and probably a studio pick at that. Christopher Eccleston should have had that role, and I think more people are going to come to that realization as they continue to tune into NBC's Heroes in addition to those of us Doctor Who fans who came to this realization back in 2005. Get Eccleston into that role, and cast Monica Bellucci for Talia Al Ghul.

I like Eckhart and though In the Company and Smoking were both good films of his, but I just see Dent being different. Loeb/Sale have Dent/2face so dead to rights it's hard to think differently. And though this will show my geek-ness, Batman has been much a detective lately. He's way more just a prick that can kick the shit of people and really just scare them out of doing crimes as opposed to this genius who outsmarts everyone. Perhaps that was the way back in the day, but go check out your local comic store and flip through a few books. And as for "making his own batmobile" or tools or whatever, uh, no. He gets shit from Harold and Oracle. He has reverse engineered a few things to use as his own (and that might be a cool thing to show, him teaching himself how something works and creating a new version for his own uses) but don't pull some bullshit that he built and designed everything himself. As for Nolan not following canon, you can go fuck yourself since DC changes it all the time. Who killed Batman's parents?!? It wasn't Joe Chill as their killer escaped and was never exposed. I'm sure shit will keep changing with 52 and whatever dumb fuck complete line crossover they need to tell next. Since being canon is almost impossible, and EVERY writer has had different ideas for Gotham! You can't knock Nolan for not making it look all queer and have the Scarecrow with fucking straw coming out of his suit. He's trying to adapt these characters to OUR real world, show how these characters could come to life, which is a cool take on it. For me anyway, to each his own though. I'll pay to see TDK, and I'm betting it will be pretty decent. BUT, Bruce Timm is the shit and no one will ever come close to capturing Batman like him.

I am in total disagreement with people dissin' David Goyer just because they all hated Blade 3. The guy transformed the two-bit Blade character into a character we all like. He layed the groundwork for Begins which the brothers Nolan took to great heights. I've said before that the Batman/Superman franchises should be mirror opposites to one another, and thus the same director and production team should handle them both. Kick Bryan Singer & Jon Peters to the curb and give it to the Nolan brothers with Goyer serving to write the original draft and template to the over-all flicks. Hire Timm & Dini as consultants. And then bring in the Smallville cast. Make it a (very) loose follow-up to that series after it ends next season. That's the way to do it. Smallville's cast has always rocked; its achilles heel was always its writing. The achilles heel to Superman Returns was the entire film, producers, director, screenwriters, and the cast. The sooner that it is erased from our collective memory - much like Batman & Robin and the Catwoman flick - the better. I have 95% faith in Nolan, and it could be totally redeemed if some recasting was held pronto.

Yes, Liotta at one time would have been a great Joker. He's too old now, like one poster pointed out. I think he would still be a great addition to the Bat-cast, but rather as a crime boss, like Tom Wilkinson's role in 'Begins'. Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal are great casting choices. Bale’s character went to Tesla and requested the design and construction of the machine. Tesla wasn’t just conveniently making such a device. Tesla needed the money since funding was falling through and he was intrigued by the idea. Maybe you left to sit on the pot and read a book during this sequence. Cheap shots and childish name calling aside, you really need to watch the film again or reassess your comprehension skills. Cinema is not a difficult medium to digest. Christ, modern cinema’s not even remotely intellectual anymore and yet you clearly couldn’t devote a mere 2 hours or so of your focus time to comprehend the simple and yet enjoyable happenings of The Prestige. You read the end of the book? Moron. With the way you read, Priest’s The Prestige should have been a breakfast perusal afterthought. Freak. Now for the wife’s opinion: So I read the book that you decided to only read the end of. Um, okay, where did you decide to start reading? Were you wondering who those characters were that weren’t in the movie? I’m not Christopher Priest so I don’t know exactly how he decided that the machine was going to work (by the way, don’t bother with any of his other books if The Prestige confused you, dumb ass), but you step in and you die. Pretty fucking simple. Oh, and key to the whole theme of the book and the movie. The ‘kid’ that you seem to remember from the end of the book that you never bothered to read was someone else completely. The dates were the dates of the performances. Yeah, that is why you either start at the beginning or you don’t bother reading a book at all. Oh, and in my humble opinion there are three kinds of people in this world: 1) people who brag that they never read (i.e. idiots), 2) people who can’t seem to shut up about how much they read (i.e. liars like you), and 3) people who actually read and comprehend and don’t make a big deal listing off the books they have read because it’s not a big deal or something to brag about it is just what they like and do. Now if you want to write a fucking novel to show that you have no idea what you are talking about, maybe you should start by reading a grammar book to teach yourself how to make a point and maybe take a basic writing class so the point you are attempting to make is actually conveyed because, seriously, you sound like a crazy person. Sorry, but SR sucked. The box office was the first to bear witness to the fact, and the entire racks worth of unrented DVDs of the movie at your local Blockbuster and Hollywood Video also bear witness to it. Unlike Batman Begins, the movie did not prove itself to be a monster on DVD. It blew, and hopefully the WB brass will come to that realization and seek a new direction (and director) the next time. To me, if you can't top a low-budget Superman'ish tv show on a subpar network, then you shouldn't waste $250 million - $350 million on a movie that most people won't waste any money to see in the theatre.

I'd say the only good part in The Last Action Hero was our Action Governor showing up in a Shakespearian piece with his machine guns. Yes, it was utter camp and was meant to be. It was disappointing because in no way does it measure up to say, Commando. Then again, its about at the same level as any scifi wanna-be flick starring Will Smith, now that I think about it. Time will tell if I Am Legend turns out to be the same quality level as a Paul W.S. Anderson, MSJ, or Uwe Boll creation. I do know that it won't come close to topping Chuck Heston's The Omega Man regardless of how close it supposedly gets to the source material. Heston > Smith, to the 1000th degree. Heck, I'd place my money on Heston - now addled with Alzheimers - still handing Chuck Norris his midget posterior while using Steven Segal as the mop for clean-up duty.

SR did not turn a profit. It cost over $300+ million. Add marketing costs - both domestic and foreign - and it still did not break even because the studios don't get 100% of ticket sales. It was a dud. The rentals aren't good. Had you opened your eyes while strolling into your local video store during the week that the flick hit DVD, you would have noticed how unsuccessful it was. People don't want a sequel to that inferior flick when they can sit at home and watch Smallville - regardless of writing talent (or lack thereof) - for free. But go ahead, you can prefer the metro Kal El as portrayed by the actor who lost the same role on Smallville to Tom Welling if you like, just don't try to project that bizarre preference on the rest of moviedom.

Tom welling is good for the smallville version as I thing Routh has alot going for him as big screen Supes. I wouldn't have wanted to see Welling as big screen supes . . .he just seems a little youthful (not sure what the real life age difference is between Welling and Routh) I agree with the Spacey comment. I wasn't sold on his Luthor interpretation (I put that down to the writing rather than his ability)but again I don't think Rosenbaum would have been right for big screen. Smallville just comes across as too youthful for big screen Supes. (I like Smallville . . .it has grown on me as it has gone on). I am very interested as to where Supes will go in the sequel. I also can't believe it lost as much money as what a lot of people say as surely it would have been dumped by the studio or relaunched in the way that Hulk is being relaunched. First off cowbell, no talkback comments should ever relate to the movie at hand. Instead, one should focus on such things as cats, women, getting banned, porn, timetraveler John Titor, and other things of such nature. To JJonz, I've been buried in work, stuff w/the wife, and trying to keep my distance from this site. Posting can be addicting in terms of maintaining conversations but also disheartening as some of the mods get a little too out of control with their hallmonitor sash but ah who cares. I'm here for now, so let's bring on the belly dancers! As for Dick Nicely, we exchanged emails a few times trying to get to the bottom of the "time traveling / repligin" conspiracy but it got exhausting. Newcomers to the "repligin" concept didn't understand or know about the relation to Titor, and instead found it fun to call the practice of digging up five year old talkbacks and posting therein as "repliging" or "time traveling" or "using my repligin machine." How these morons (and I NEVER use derogatory language on this site, you know that) managed to tie repligin (the aicn time-traveling poster) to the idiotic habit of unearthing old talkbacks is beyond me. Another reason I've taken a long break! AS FOR NICELY--haven't heard from him lately but I suppose I could shoot him a quick email and let him know we're up late. Er, you're up late rather, it's only 7:33 in texas. Finally, I loved the modern Batman and Superman. Hulk and FF weren't "awesome" but were okay. And as a child born in 1977 I'm just happy to see my boyhood heroes on the big screen (and backed up by a huge budget by the way) in any form. I don't think for a second Spidey3 will suck (as most others do) because there's just too much money at stake. But money isn't something people here understand. Prolly cos they live with their parents...tee hee...

i dont think ive ever given my 2 cents on the whole SR debacle seeing as how i was late to the party since i avoided it theatricaly. i admit ive never been a big supes fan, but i really want to. to me he works best with other heroes. anytime he and batman get together, fuck im there. but alone and this i think was a problem with SR, is that it has a pretentious feel to it. when i first saw the ads for SR i had to say "give me a break". and i was right, wasnt i? the whole film smacked of "holyer than thou" feel to it, which i think made the film feel boring and just plain stale. superman desperately needed some humor and not from a hammy Lex Luthor. it just felt like a masterbatory excersise with no payoff. anyways im sure im just repeating shit others have already said but i will admit the plane sequence was kinda cool, and thats what the film needed more of. not a bland and quite frankly bastardised version of the character, but aq better display of what he stands for and what he can do. i want to see him repeling asteroids and shit. obliterating them with a single punch. not lifting cars..we got enough of that in the 70's and even in fucking fan films.

I know its not a direct adaptation of the book if it has any other ending.. but... this is how I reckon the Prestiege should have ended... MY ALTERNATE ENDING.... Jackman is dying.. the whole scene plays out.. he dies thinking it was a cloning machine.. the backstage gets set on fire and Bale walks out.. As Christian Bales character walks out of the abandoned theatre he hands a man (who we can't see) a wad of money, and keeps walking... then we hear Bale say "Are you watching closely" over him walking off and then the monologue about the whole meaning of "the prestige" from Michael Caine over a montage of clips... The first scene is the bird squashing, "First comes the pledge.... The magician shows you something ordinary" the next scene is of the actor 'double' with the big teeth, and him talking to Bale at the bar, the next scene is the bullet catch... then you see tesla plant a gun near the machine, you see Jackman shoot his double after he comes out of the closet after using the machine. "you're an actor, you're supposed to be dead, so try not to beathe" you then see him get up after the original jackman is gone and pulls a bladder filled with pigs blood out of his chest that was attached to a metal plate... the ball bouncing along the floor..... "Next comes the turn".... then you see what seems to be Bale paying Tesla with a big brown bag of money, you see tesla say "i've already begun building it".. the next scene is the same bag Tesla carries with him when he says to Jackman "You're our last financier".. The ball continues to bounce...... then you see Bale throwing hats around outside teslas place making Jackman think that its cloning his hats.. then you see Jackman realising that tesla has made a cloning machine.. "But it isn't enough to make a man disappear, you have to make him reappear".. the NEW transporting man trick with Jackmans double rising through the floor, we see jackman unconscious as he drops through the floor after the elctricity pulses through his body in the electrical transporting man trick.. Then we see Jackmans double is dropped into the water and for all intents and purposes drowns.. . then he flips the latch and unlocks the trick lock, and Caine does a bait and switch with a dummy corpse that is fashioned to look like Jackman, the ball keeps bouncing... You wonder why Caine is helping Bale.. "You should stop kissing your wifes leg, if I can see it, the guy in the 3rd row can see it", we see Caine standing off scene with a pocket watch, we see Jackmans wife drowning, Caine rushing to her aid, Jackman over his wife crying, Caine on the verge of crying as well (didn't see that coming did you)... you see little quick clips of Bales diary, the piece of paper that says tesla, Christian bales character handing Jackmans 'the prestiege notes' through the jail and Jackman ripping it up, we look to the ground and see glimpses of the notes which are actually, 2 birth certificates, that have the same last name, we see flashes of Bales characters changing outfits and disguises we also see more paperwork of a medical report, flashes of the words "tuberculosis"... and "months to live"... then we see Bales character from behind bars... who looks as though he loves his daughter.... as it happens he loves his niece..... then bales character, dying in jail, accepting his fate "AINT A JAIL THAT WILL HOLD ME" Bale throws the ball in the jail... Bale hangs.... the ball is caught... ".. then comes.... the prestiege....." We see bale walking off with the ball in his hand.... he picks up his daughter and kisse her sweetly... The final shot of the film is a pan up from the wad of money, given to the mystery man.... we see nothing of the mans face.... save for a pair of Big bucky teeth... and he walks off down the street whistling..................... ..... aaaaaand scene. Cut to black...... Bale.... sotto voce "Abra-cadabra" That's my alternate ending...... I like it... but then again I dont make or write movies I just thought I'd put it out there.. I may even do a quick mock up with Adobe Premiere to see how it looks on film.... just for the hell of it. P.S. NOLAN ROCKS HARD.... And Eckhart will do well as Dent, but I'm not convinced about him as 2 face.... silly as that sounds.

I fell asleep. dont go for the Wii, and im not fanboy bashing, it just sucks. we have every system and the Wii is a novelty that wears very thin. its fun for a few days then you realize the games are just gimmicks. the 360 is the fave in the house and the PS3 running a close 2nd (just not that many god games yet...praying for MGS4) so if ur planning on getting a system then go for the 360, trust me.

I am shit at games . . .no you probably don't understand how bad I am. I completed PS2 Lego Star Wars (the first one) and that is it. I love shit like super monkey ball for the fun factor and games factor so having something like boxing, tennis, bowling, yet more monkey ball is something that I think suits me. (oh i did complete Snes Mario Kart - still the best game ever in my opinion) . . .plus it's alot cheaper (in the UK at least) so fits my budget. (just done many improvements to my house including new driveway which has drained all my money)

if youre a casual gamer then it might suit you better. and there are some good games, namely the new Zelda. just dont expect anything mindblowing, at least not right away. and i will admit the Wii Sports Tennis is a blast, especially if u have kids.

Target, WalMart, TRU, nowhere has 'em. I think shogun may be right in saying the novelty wears off. I feared that, but I must admit it looks like alot of fun. the 360 looks amazing however. my homey has one and just beat gears of war wednesday morning. couldn't do any vday shopping till he beat it. now, what news on halo3?

i pre-ordered The Crackdown so i'll be beta testing the multiplayer :) hoping its good. and yes the novelty of the Wii wears thin but it is fun and really accessible to ppl. kids like it (mostly my girls) and im not convinced the PS3 is any better than the 360 at this point. some of the titles actually look worse i think, like Call of Duty 3.

I just watched this in the last couple of days, loved it to bits, but agree that the ending was flawed. Too much went down to chance. I can accept the coincidences but one stood out as a glaring mistake. How did Jackman know that Bale was watching his clone die? In every one of his performance the original Jackman falls through the trap door and drowns and the transported clone end up on the rear balcony instantly. How then on this performance did the new Jackman clone know NOT to come out and reveal himself to the audience. Forgive me if I'm not making myself clear on this but there is simply no way that the Jackman character would know Bale is by the tank thus preventing him from revealing himself and faking his death.

He doesnt know how to do it. Nolan has no problem building suspense, creating mood and giving us drama... but he can't lens action. I'm not saying I want Michael Bay (he sucks for the same reasons: over-reliance on close ups, useless and rapid cutting) but I would prefer someone who could tell a tight story and develop great characters as well as provide the action. The batmobile chase? ONE clever shot: the extreme low angle of the cop with the nose of the car swinging over the roof's ledge. The rest was obvious miniature and more close ups. Burton painted a good picture but couldnt do story (as usual) but at least he shot the fights well. Who else should Nolan take a lesson from? I'd say Cuaron and Spielberg. They're doing continuous action shots, and its gripping.

I just spent the last 2+ hours reading the majority of these talkbacks. Mostly the long posts. And I'd like to preface this long rant with the following information: I enjoy comicbook adaptations wherein the production takes the source material seriously. As such, I loved Batman Begins, Spiderman 1 & 2, and The Hulk. I could actually tolerate Daredevil (except for the stupidity of how high and far the guy could jump around. The toxic waste made him blind and enhanced his other senses, it didn't make him the Incredible Flea! oh, and the fight with King Pin could have been a little better too.) But I hated what they did with Superman Returns. Singer does not understand the iconic figure of Superman. The thing about Superman and why he is The World's Greatest Superhero is not because of his powers, but because he ALWAYS makes the right choices. THAT is his power. To do right. Not to use his powers for his own personal agendas. Yet these are the crimes that he commits: Spying on his ex-gf with his x-ray vision. Sneaking in to her house at night to stare at a kid. Having sex with an 18 or 19 year old woman, then leaving her for 5 or 6 years to go looking for his home which he should KNOW doesn't exist any more. She must have been that young, because there is NO WAY she would be older than 25 in this movie and her son is at least 5 years old. (Older probably). And the kid was the biggest atrocity perpetrated upon the world. Because he can't be undone now. He should never have been in it in the first place. And that is the biggest crime of this movie. It cannot be undone. Oh sure, as a super'hero' movie, it's ok. but as a SUPERMAN movie, it is horrible. It baffles me how many people can enjoy it, when these facts should be obvious. It also baffles me that Singer, until now a respectable proponent of comicbook adaptations, would not choose to do a re-launch of his own. In order to repair some of the mistakes that Donner made. (Pa Kent LIVES!!! Lex Luthor is actually very powerful, financially as well as mentally). And perhaps have more action, say, with a Metallo henchman. Now, granted BB DOES have some flaws as well, (the machine they use is ridiculous) but it is much closer to the historical Batman comics than Supes is to it's source material. That being said, in regards to this new casting of Dent, I will leave that to Nolan and his respect for the material. And as was stated earlier, don't kill off the Joker at the end, let him be psychotic and dangerously maniacal. Not quite so Nicholson whimsical. Good luck Nolan. On a final note: I loved The Prestiege. I could follow the story easily and was not thrown by the 'trick ending' as some have called it. It made sense to me. I echo McBane's sentiments as to the reasons behind what was going on, with Tesla. With Bald and Jackman. And the secret about the trick.

If so, I didn't pick up on it. But it would still make little sense to just disappear when the point of the trick is to lure Bale in and fake his death. The core of Jackman's obsession is his quest for fame which I'm sure he would want to continue. I guess though, he could fake his death and come back later as aladdin sane or something. Maybe I am thinking about it too much.

or are you just going to insult him by calling him names. The guy pretty much just wrote a thesis on the flaws of The Prestige. Its a legitimate argument. I see people slamming him but I dont see anyone coming up with as comprehensive an opposing argument. The things he brought up exist in the film, if they didnt bother you the way they bother him thats fine, but the flaws he finds are very real. Some of them are nitpicks but others are gaping storytelling flaws. Also Messi its clear from your posts that it isnt Batman you like so much as Christopher Nolans Batman in particular. That Batman doesnt exist in the comic books, which you apparently disdain when you knock on "Batman DC Style". And for the record when I say Nolan got the atmosphere wrong, if you respond with "Then you want Joel Shumacher back!!!" you automatically lose. Thats just mindless invective thrown out to derail the real argument. By saying it you imply there are only two ways to do Batman on screen, Nolan and Schumacher, which we all know is ridiculous. I'm also going to guess messi, and feel free to tell me if I'm wrong, that you hover around the age of 15. At least thats the way it comes off when you sling cheap insults.

I am incredibly excited for the Dark Knight. Both Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart have yet to take their careers down this path and I'm sure they will both do a great job. but I have no desire to watch it again, mostly because the action, costumes and effects aren't that great. The story, acting, and some of the direction are good, but that makes a good movie I don't feel compelled to rewatch. I hope a gritty Joker movie might be a bit more rewatchable. I like Maggie, and I think the foundation for a great Joker intro was set up in Begins. Most of the early rumors suggest Joker won't die int his one, which is another good thing. As for future villians, I think Croc would fit well in this universe and look good on screen and would be one of the decent characters that hasn't made it to screen. Harley Quinn is a great character to add in while the Joker is on trial(if they go that way). I have no desire to see Two-Face. Also, anyone that suggests either Schumacher Batman was in any way good is insane.

However, I only saw the movie once when it was released, and some of the events aren't so clear in my mind. Such as in what sequence everything happened. Also, I found SC's arguements to be at times incomprehensible. He would make outrageous leaps in logic and yet expound on them as if they are facts. Ie. So, as McBane pointed out, Borden sent him to Tesla, to put him off the track of the real secret (his twin). But Tesla turned out to be more than just a technical genius. It seems that he was in fact a wizard as well. Now you can buy this or not. If you can't then the movie isn't for you. But that doesn't make it a bad movie. It just means that you aren't able to suspend your disbelief enough to accept it. Because the device he builds for Angier, is only loosely based upon Borden's 'idea'. Tesla, wizard that he is, just turned his idea into reality. And I've already stated the absurdity of using the device to resurrect his dead wife. And THAT is the theme of this movie. Two great illusionists. One a master of his CRAFT, the other a great PERFORMER. Both of them seem willing to go to any lengths to perform the greatest trick of all time. Borden mutilated himself (by cutting off his fingers) to accomplish it. Angier mutilated himself over and over again every night to do it. Remember, Angier didn't like the idea of killing the bird in the cage, but he was able to kill himself. That's one of the great aspects of this theme. [Quote: "Later, however, we find out that the Native American was actually Eugene Levy, not the actor, but ACTUALLY EUGENE LEVY (!!!)"] this weird arguement would make more sense if David Bowie was playing himself. But he wasn't. He was playing Tesla. Who WAS perhaps the only person in HISTORY (remember this takes place way back when, not yesterday) who might be able to create the device. Or at least lend credence to the possibility of the device enough for the audience to suspend their disbelief. Once again, if you couldn't. It's your fault, not Nolan's. Because it's Nolan's (the story teller's) wish that the audience wants to be entertained by the story. I was. I could believe that the Tesla in this FICTIONAL story could create a FICTIONAL device that made FICTIONAL duplicates of it's subject matter. Duplicates. It didn't make inanimate objects animate. So why would he suspect that it could raise his wife from the dead? [Quote: "A GIANT FUCKIN' ALIEN AND GIANT FUCKIN' PREDATOR DRAWN TO EARTH BY THE SMOKE SIGNALS (?!?!?!?!) (Spoilers for Prestige, but whatever) I hate getting into this stuff, but you've got a fundamental flaw in your argument, too - you assume that all fiction takes place in the same fictionalized world. In "24", Jack isn't a wizard because Jack lives in a reality-based world. In "The Prestige", hints of the magic to come are shown from the very first shot (the hats and the cat), and Borden's seemingly unexplainable trick is explained (seemingly) by Tesla's machine. In the fictionalized world of the film, magic CAN exist, though most recognize it as science, and it is set up very well throughout the lead-up, with the first shot and the increasing unlikelihood that Borden uses a double (on a side note, Tesla WAS a real historical figure, had a real-life rivalry with Thomas Edison [Edison is the reason we use DC instead of AC to this day], and did experiments that more superstitious people believed to be magic - he's a historical figure with a sort of legendary mystique about him, which is why I'm sure, he's in the story). Anyways, what I'm getting at is that you can't treat all fiction as if it were the same. The Prestige is magical realism at it's finest - a realistic world not too far removed from our own, but with a slight magical twist to it, which is, in my mind, a perfect match for a film about, gasp, MAGIC. But whatever, to each his own, eh?

SPOILERS Apologies again for the slightly off-topic thread jacking. I love thinking about the prestige and re-experiencing it. Everytime I do, my love and respect for the film grows. Again there are HEAVY spoilers for the rest of this post so if you haven't seen the prestige, PLEASE read something else! If people are going to mention the prestige and spoil parts of the plot, I think we should try not to ruin the film for those who haven't seen it, SPOILERS! First a couple of apologies. CORPONIOUS, I was going to reply to you with a smart arse post about how this isnt usenet but do you know what dude, you were right. That was a completely off-topic, mediocre post. Next time I need to test something, I will make sure it has valuable content. StrangeCo and IndustryKiller, I apologise for calling you trolls. Uncalled for as your arguments are very sound and I actually agree with ALL of them. Even the fact that the machine is a contrived plot device. But I CAN'T just let it go. Even though I won't change your minds I want to try and explain to you why the more people throw up little 'problems' with the film, the MORE I enjoy it. The more I think about the film, the more amazing it becomes. You both say you feel cheated by the ending. Okay I can understand that. But that in itself, is PART of what the film is supposed to do. It is one big long magic trick in its own right. Holding the obvious answers to everything and waving them in front of your face. Like all magic tricks, this film can leads to a number of emotional responses from the audience. Awe, Excitement, Disbelief, Fear and Anger You say the machine breaks the internal logic of the world because we don't see how the trick works. I say that is fine because WE NEVER SEE EXACTLY HOW ANY OF THE TRICKS WORK! What do I mean by this? Well after seeing this film, I still would not be able to perform even the simplest tricks in the movie. Why? Because I have neither the skill, training orpractice to execute them so smoothly and flawlessly. It is still magic to me.! I think you are also too invested in the magic and what you wanted the film to be. At its core it is using magic to explore the themes of revenge and obsession. It seems mad to me to hate an entire film you were loving up to the last five minutes. It's like living your life hoping to die suddenly. Your life is wonderful and satisfying but on your deathbed, you discount it all because your 50 when you die rather than 35. It's all about the journey not the destination The machine isn't really a trick in its own right. It is part of two much larger tricks. The trick the Nolans are playing on the audience watching the film and the trick jackman's chracter plays on Bale and the rest of that world. Not explaining the machine is the same as not explaining the full mechanics of the 'Disappearing bird' jacket/machine. Just because it looks impossible doesn't mean it IS impossible. I'll agree the dupe machine is contrived. (like all tricks are to dupe an audience) It is made of ALL THE MAJOR TRICKS in the film. And is more important as a complex thematic device than a literal magic trick in its own right. 1. It has the element of real danger that the water escape and bullet catch had in the film. The fact that he uses a water trap as part of his scheme, shows you how twisted the jackman character has become. He is willing to kill himself multiple times by drowning, in order to get revenge on a man who he blames for the death of his wife, who also died of drowning. Even after he was told how awful it is to die via drowning, he killed himself again and again until the trap was sprung. 2. It has the 'Taking of life' aspect of the bird trick. Again interesting because at the beginning of hugh's character arc, he thinks it's cruel. By the end of the film, his own trick goes well beyond that. Something just came to me StrangeCo about what you said previously. You said that the machine was a stupid idea because with it jackman could have cloned a new wife. I said that would lead to rotting wife. We are both wrong. Jackman is so obsessed with his revenge, he can't even consider it. The revenge has gone from avenging his wife to fucking Bale over no matter the cost. I mean think about it. He has this machine and it probably has about a billion amazing positive uses. But he finds the one most unethical, masochistic, vile and plain psychotic use he can not just to mess with Bale, but to take from him his career, his freedom, his daughter and ultimately his life. This makes Jackman at that time both the best magician and the worst. The best because it is a fiendishly brilliant magic trick he comes up with and the worst because his obsession leads to his downfall. He was not able to see what was in plain sight This is to be as expected though. If you watch the film closely, Jackman was never really ever all that interested in magic til the tragedy. It was his obsession with bale that drove his magic. In fact it may have even been the case that his wife was more skillful than he. I think it was Bale who points the chinese man out to jackman and bale is always shown as the more competent magician. Tesla is definitely key to this film. StrangeCo I urge you to do some research into Tesla and Edison. Do you really think that such a carefully constructed narrative would have two historical figures dropped into it carelessly? I believe his motivations and reputation were near perfectly represented in the story. Lets be clear on one thing. Even now, scientists can't actually work out what some of his working inventions did. I am not sure if that would have been the case if the US Government hadn't confiscated most of his work. Who knows if he did/could have made a duplication/transporting machine. It maybe unlikely but to me it IS plausible. If anyone in that time peroiod would have, it would likely have been him. You say it was coincidence that bale found the only person capable of making such a machine and led jackman atraight to him. I don't think that was the case. For Bale's plan to work, he had to find someone believeable. A modern day magician. Tesla fit the bill. Bale must have known that Tesla was highly secretive and would never build any such machine for Jackman. Not that it would matter. Because it's impossible right? Bale didn't kinow about Tesla's money troubles (Mirroring Tesla's real life money troubles) and sorely underestimated his skill. In Bale's arrogant self absorbtion, he forget the debt many of his magic tricks owed to science and engineering. This post is already too freaking long so I am gonna stop there. I have to be at work in 3 and a half hours and I have had no sleep. I see many of your coincidences as valid character motivations. The sheer depth, progression of plot and character as well as the beautiful structure of the film, immunises it from problems people claim it exposes. But in the end if you can't buy into it, you can't buy into it. I am just so glad I can appreciate it.

some of you people need to grow the fuck up, take a step back from your cubicle jobs, look at what you're posting, and realize ur not movie critics, let alone do you know the first thing about movies/what people will want to see. i can't wait 'til the first 23 review comes out, half the people on here beak jim carrey, then the film is a hit. i honestly hope it is just to shut some of you the fuck up

like WHAT? i mean, ok...spiderman 3. Grindhouse. Hot fuzz. but, seriously, has there ever been a comic book adaption more dead on that batman begins? No WAY! heck, i like superman as a character more, but batman begins has blown EVERY comic book adaption out the window! I CAN NOT WAIT for the Dark Knight.
