briefly...sorta... from creators of maiden of death
by Team_Maiden
Feb 15th, 2007
11:27:52 PM
We are the writer/directors of the Maiden of Death trailer. We’re not professional filmmakers, but like many of you, aspire to be. We didn’t ask to be written up on AICN. So it’s quite an honor. Once it was here, we planned on staying out of the discussions completely, letting the work speak for itself. However, it’s gotten to a point where people are presumed to be speaking as us. This is a different story. We feel it necessary now to clear the air. Rumor control. Here are the facts: $1400 painfully spent. Most of it travel expense to fly three friends in to help out, one of which was the main actress. Shot over two, very long, grueling days. Guerilla style. No permits, no permission. Found locations, whatever could be used. No equipment rental. Locked edit in the three days following shoot. Rest of post in less than five days. Three days straight with two hours of sleep to finish on time. Worked up until we had to ship FedEx on the 10th of February (which we actually missed and had to send it via a courier service at a tune of $200). It wasn’t “done way before the contest” and we didn’t have “a lot of money.” To be called “soulless” feels like an attack not just on us but also on all of our friends who helped out. Like this labor of love is less legitimate than anybody else’s. It’d be a lie to say we’re not bothered by it. Everyone gave up their free time, which we imagine is the same for everybody else involved in this competition. It was just as low budget and guerilla as anything else. Just two guys who got together and made something on a whim. We entered the competition for the same reasons everyone else did; we wanted to have a laugh doing something fun with family and friends and hopefully get it into some sort of screening. Whether or not it is “grindhouse”, we feel, is an argument in semantics. However, we can honestly say that movies like “Heavy Metal”, “The Wraith”, and anime like “FLCL”, along with classics of the genre like “Female Convict Scorpion Jailhouse 41”, “Coffy”, and old chop-socky flicks were our sources of inspiration. That's it. P.S. Sorry about the length.

man i think your trailer rocks hard and it seems to me everyone has been feeling it so i dont think you got much to worry about. I think everyone put alot of blood sweat and tears into making their trailers. On Hobo with a Shotgun, i too went a couple days without sleep and me and my producer and Hobo almost got arrested while making the trailer. I can see you put alot of work into your trailer and i think you should be pretty darn proud of it man.

FYI, Stormtroopers looks a lot cleaner on MySpace: www.myspace.com/stormtroopersm ovie also have a little poster up. BLACK MANTIS totally rocks my balls. HOBO + MAIDEN are my favs. Personally, I like that Maiden goes for an 80's B-movie style, rather than 60's/70's. The fresh angle is cool with me, and it still feels likes a lurid grindhouse revenge tale with rediculous subject matter. Works for me. Hobo would get the pure-70's-grindhouse award from me. Plus I just love hearing "HOBO... WITH A SHOTGUN!!!"

And I'm not just saying that because I made one of them. A feature version of any of these couldn't possibly cost more to make than ten grand. You could bring back the Grindhouse overnight by taking about a million bucks flat and just producing all of these movies. ESPECIALLY Hobo With A Shotgun, that one would never leave theaters.

Tarantino IS overrated. But I think his best work is the writing of TRUE ROMANCE. His best directorial effort is PULP FICTION. RESERVOIR DOGS is good, JACKIE BROWN boring as hell and KILL BILL waaaay overrated (actually, it's crap -- and yes, you may stone me for this).
We ALL liked Tarantino "before he was cool"

So don't think you're earning hipster points because you saw Reservoir Dogs the day it came out. It's too early in Tarantino's career to write him off as a has been already. How many people do you think wrote Scorsese off for his lesser work in between Taxi Driver and Goodfellas? Do you know how many movies the average writer or director is responsible for throughout their career? Quite a lot. One or two movies you don't like doesn't mean you'll never like anything they make ever again.

Still king. Not that the others aren't fine pieces of work, but so far the only trailer that's really clicked for me is HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN! (can't stop saying it). The guys who made that thing really hit a nerve of some sort. If there ever was a Rocky of the grindhouse scene, it's HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN! It really should have a place of honor among the other "real" trailers in the double feature.

Running Time
by Boromir187
Feb 16th, 2007
08:18:22 AM
Last I read, Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" will be 80 minutes and Tarantino's "Death Proof" will be 90 minutes. So, assuming that the four (possibly five) fake trailers are each 2-3 minutes long, plus any candy or ratings ads they've addedin, that would make the total running time around 3 hours and 15 minutes or so.

It's so great to see these other entries. Big shout out to the Maiden of Death folks. You should contact me - we'll swap shooting stories! (I have questions about some of your CG elements.) Also props to the Hobo team. Halifax has a decent presence in the competition! If anyone else in interested in learning more about our entry, just go to our website, where there are free downloads, behind the scenes info, posters, wallpaper, music etc, related to Tetas de Muerte. This was a great experience, and I hope SXSW will consider hosting similar contests in the future. I can't wait for Grindhouse! This is going to be awesome! The 2 trailers i have seen that truly reflect grindhouse in the look, the feel, and the sound. Hobo is fuckin awesome and hilarious and should be made into a movie. who doesn't want to see a hobo drunk with a shotgun? for that matter i would also love to see a blood thirsty mexican gardener with an arsenal of gardening tools to kill with. my hat goes off to both of these film makers for supporting very original ideas and not forgetting to keep your audience entertained. Good Luck to you both but I don't think you'll need it!

Kinda funny to be thinking of this film being released on HD-DVD (you know it will be--quelle ironie, eh?) And I finally got my hands on a 32" widescreen LCD...this should definitely be watched on the same mono, wooden boxed Zenith I saw Talk Dirty to Me on so many, many years ago; ah, where does the time go? If I know Rodriguez, the dvd will contain both the theatrical and "Clean" versions, clean in this case meaning without any of the scratches or cigarette burns across the image (of course it's gonna be shot digitally, at least Planet Terror will be). And as far as "how does Cherry pull the trigger"...remember that Bugs Bunny cartoon where he was battling a bull in the ring, and somehow the bull swallowed a rifle, and everytime he flicked his tail downwards bullets shot out of his ears? That's all Cherry Darling does: flick her tail downwards. And what a tasty tail it is...

Big Love from London to all the shlockmeisters out there!! All these trailers are fucking brilliant!!! We made SLASH HIVE and TRANNIBAL FLESH FEAST for the competition, but can't get away from work to make quicktimes for youtube yet....we'll be uploading on Monday (better late than never?)... Our shoots, back-to-back, on TRANNIBAL and SLASH HIVE, over 2 days, was the most fun I've ever had in a February ever!...exhausting, bloody, boozed, and life-affirming in a way that only pussies with fangs and wasp-aroused maniacs can bring..... Mr Rodriguez and Mr Tarantino should definitely consider an extra disc in the special edition, just for us lot!! And a VHS version is definitely a must!.... And when is the HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN movie deal gonna be announced???? We all want that movie to be greenlit THIS WEEK!!!! Hollywood: give the hobo his shot NOW.....strike while the iron is hot....
Zeke25:17, hows that 32'' widescreen LCD working out?
by JimmyLoneWolf
Feb 16th, 2007
11:02:14 AM
I just got a new computer with a widescreen LCD monitor a month ago...and I couldn't be happier. I just watched Hero, The New World, and House of Flying Daggers on it and MAN, its like discovering those movies all over again! I don't think I'll ever watch movies on my TV again...there's just no comparison (until I get a widescreen TV in the near future). Anyone who loves movies owes it to themself to save up and buy a decent TV or monitor...depending on which you prefer. For some reason I actually prefer the computer b/c you sit closer to the screen...and with the lights out it feels like a private theater. If I could give one to everyone I know, I would...thats how much I love it. Anyway, hope you're enjoying yours too, later!

On the Grindhouse trailer, Kurt Russell's car smashes through a drive-in marquee with these two movies on it. When I saw Scary Movie 4, I thought that Tarantino and Rodriguez were making a comment on horror movies today, but then I read that they both liked Wolf Creek. Maybe I'm just reading too much into things... Great trailer by the way. I can believe how psyched up I am to see this. I'll be like going home.

i'm tired of these 'this is not grindhouse' comments (on here and AICN) simply because it is WELL PRODUCED. 1. if grindhouse movies were being made in this digital age (which they probably are) they are/would be done like this...of course there aren't film scratches and grain because they are/would be shot digitally. if there were modern grindhouse theaters, they would show a movie like this! if it existed, naturally. i'm am sure when SXSW comes around and Tarantino/Rodriguez see this little gem they will agree. and many of you will be backpedaling. saying this doess not fit in the grindhouse aesthetic is like saying Trans Siberian Orchestra isn't classical music because it wasn't composed in the late 18th century. poppycock!!!

I gotta back up Team_Maiden on this one. These guys flipped the script. Anyway, the movie has a similar look to Sin City, which I consider a type of grindhouse/exploitation flick no doubt. They widened their view of what "grindhouse" meant, zeroed in on the 80s rather than the 70s, and did something unique and utterly razor sharp on every level. For my money, it's either them or my other fav HOBO--which did keep it traditional and, I think, succesfully managed to be milk-spraying-hilarious while still playing it 100% straight-faced. Both were fantastic. And I'd say that there are over a dozen other utter masterpieces in there. I have a feeling Robert's totally blown away by some of these flicks. I don't think there's any way that anyone could have expected all this amazing work to come out of the contest. He created a monster here. Once again, RR gives indie filmmaking a huge shot in the arm...

would the soundtrack being top-heavy with Peter Cetera make this a better film or a worse film?

I did a authentic Grindhouse trailer roundaround on Youtube yesterday, some nice bits out there(deleted a few too, didn't fit the criteria)and I can see where some of the filmakers got their ideas from (it's interesting to see who gravitated towards which brand of sleaze ;>) .I liked the music in Brainz, child molester had the old skool about it but the voiceover should of been deadly serious to offset the humour.Scourge of the undead had it's moments.I liked the Casey Kasem voiceover on Demonessa though I thought Legal tender was the better one from that crew(deadly Strumpet lol). The rest were nice and reminded me of 80's films rather than the 70's coarseness required but I enjoyed them anyway. All the best.

Kudos to you and all involved with HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN. As if the trailer weren't badass enough, you now have a fantastic poster as well. You know, even if you never make a feature-length HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, you could become an internet phenomenon with a series of HOBO trailers instead. Judging by the love HOBO is getting on the otherwise notoriously cruel AICN talkbacks, you already have a sizable and vocal fanbase and the continuing "adventures" of the HOBO - even if only in trailer form - would be hugely popular and might even result in opportunities for something bigger one day for you and your crew. The possibilities are endless, with HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN vs. (insert villains here), HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN MEETS (insert heroes here), and -- of course -- HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN... IN SPACE!!! We'd ALL buy that for a dollar. David Brunt (coolest name ever, by the way) must become a star!

"I liked the Casey Kasem voiceover on Demonessa though I thought Legal tender was the better one from that crew" - thanks man! I like how many different directions everyone went, but I'm a sucker for a straight-up counterfeit. "Woman with the Eyes of Glass" takes that prize for me. Best outside the box effort was "Cong of the Dead". I am going to crack the fuck up if Hobo With A Shotgun gets a feature deal. Loved it.

Thanks to Harry and everyone else for posting "The Woman with Glass Eyes" (not on this topic, on the previous one). It's a real honor to be listed on Aint-it-cool. Thank you again for that, and thanks to everyone who said nice things. http://tinyurl.com/2qesx2

that everyone on here is being so cool and positive with each other. Is this just a fluke, or am I going to have to change my opinion of this site? No jealous, bitter, would-be filmmakers tearing down the accomplishments of others, no people with excuses as to why they can't prove they have more talent than professionals, but they just haven't been given the opportunities... just folks backing their shit up with results. Congrats all around.

I said it in the previous thread, I'll say it here now: Hobo With A Shotgun is the new "Billy Jack" for the 21st Century. If y'all ever make this into a flick, make sure to record a new version of "One Tin Soldier" while you're at it!

Grindhouse starts a trend. I dunno about you, but I'm tired of PG13 action flicks that don't deliver on the goods, and pretentious, ultimately meaningless arthouse flicks like The Brown Bunny. Maybe Grindhouse will be the biggest movie of the year, and from here on in, producers will say to prospective artists "Does it have tits and violence?" and if the pitching director responds with a "No" he'll just be laughed out of the business.

Hi...so I'm not sure if AICN stopped posting links to new SXSW trailers or what but I thought I'd stop by and give a link to ours. We just put it up Friday and it's called "The Dead Won't Die" and we're pretty happy with it. It's no maiden of death...but we're proud of it...check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =CAFcQTdNPRM Hope you enjoy it...let me know what you think.

WE NEED ANOTHER DECADE OF DIRTBAG KILLIN. Oh yeah, Grind House now lives in video games. Collect these bloodthirsty games, they'll be worth somethin 20 years from now when the government has us all microchipped.

I can't stop watching this trailer. I'm intrigued. One site carrying the trailer as one of their favorites, states, "In essence...70's eroticism, depravation, paranoia, atmosphere, nazism, sadism, wickedness...something absolutely wonderful classified with an X. Words are bountiful with similar images."

Deathtits (Tetas de Meurtes) was not at all what I expected. Cool (freaky) robots and the idea was really original. Nice pace to it.
