But the concept is solid. I'd watch it but it's got to be violent. Ultra violent. And don't rehash the same character types. Breathe new life into it with new ideas within the concept, not just a series of 'wish I had made Aliens' type fan shorts.

Just watched the pitch storyboard thang. It's soooo cool. Call me signed up. This brings the franchise back to... spooky? Just hearing the music and some empty backgrounds made me feel all nostalgic. The Alien franchise died halfway through Alien3, and we've needed THIS ever since. Wish them the best of luck.
Alien-atics Unleashed

While the storyline sounds ok, those character designs are horrible. They look straight out of Loonatics Unleashed. With the style of the backgrounds in the clip I was not expecting Alien-atics Unleashed style characters. If they make character models look more realistic, it might work.

...but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Can't say I'm crazy about the animation style. That highly cartoonized look worked (like a charm) for Clone Wars, but at this severely reduced level of detail both the Alien and the Marine lose a good deal of their menace and appeal. I remain very open to this idea.

I hope that was just a test video. Because they are going to have to make it alot darker and more serious of they want it to do the Alien franchise proper justice. I don't want it to be dumb slapstick stuff like this guy Newbie(HORRIBLE NAME BTW) shooting at computers all the time and falling down. Also, the animation should be more smooth and not jump from cell to cell like it was; that is just lame. Also, the voices of the characters, at present they sound poorly recorded, and just stupid, get better voices. This can be a cool idea, just do it properly

but the animation firstly, and the tone secondly, has to change to win my real support.

its too kiddy and cartoony. yes, its a cartoon, but so was batman TAS - also highly stylised but it worked - in fact just fucking hire bruce timm and paul dini. if that's not possible then please, darken the tone and uncutesy the animation. that marine looks like a plush.

Have any of you haters seen the Director's Cut of Alien 3? A far superior film to the hacked-about theatrical release. Not in the same class as the first two, of course, but then few films are. This animation looks interesting but I agree the characters need to be less cartoony.

i think it's a great idea - albeit does smack of Starship Troopers. Newbie is a terrible name, and i don't trust Animation being done in America. it's a way better idea than AVP2 to carry on the "Aliens" mythology, one of my favorites in Screendom.

Even with the limited animation in the clip there's a sense of dread. Great sound design. Not crazy about the video-game starting-a-new-level feel to the weapons roll call at the beginning. Not crazy about the cutesy Newbie design. But ultimately, the mood is very effective, and I think this can be scary.
Drool indeed.

Sign me up post haste. I am a huge Alien fan to the degree of Star Trek and Star Wars fans. Seriously. I even liked AvP for what it was. I'd submit that since the third film there has not been a good Alien outing on the screen. For me, the films series ended with the third which I love (both theatrical and director's cut versions). I tire of the haters. I have enjoyed all of the Dark Horse comics and have high hopes for this project. Personally, I like the animation style. This has wonderful potential. Hopefully they will move forward despite any negative naysayers on these boards.

...to give this its due. I personally don't dig the cartoon simplicity of the stills shown above, but it works with proper lighting and treatment. It might be cool. (Of course, it'd be even cooler with a more anime-caliber art style, but hey. And I *can* appreciate the simpler styles, a la Batman Animated or Clone Wars. It'd work okay.) As CPete said, the actual clip shows potential.

Love it- but here are the problems to be blunt. 1.Newbie is a terrible terrible name. You may as well name the character "Little Bitch Boy" 2.Droll. Need the drool. 3.Character design is lame. The backgrounds and stuff were sweet, but that charter looks like a Bruce Timm wannabe Archie mixed Kirby from Nintendo. Very soft. Colonial marines are hard core. Needs to look more like a Heavy Metal illo. Check out the work of Simon Bisley. After watching that clip i was pretty drawn in with some suspense. but as soon as the main character was reveals i started laughing. looks like a toy design for playschool. the V/O doesnt bug me too much, it's all temp shit. i'm sure the guy doing it isn't an actor.

I even thought CLONE WARS sucked (in terms of the animation, at least). It may work for shows on the Cartoon Network like DEXTER'S LAB, but for shows that are trying to be serious - it just sucks. Sure it's cheap, but the problem is that it actually LOOKS cheap. I'm not sure why animation these days can't take a page out of the book of the animated shows from the late 80s, early 90s - like BATMAN or ANIMANIACS (among many others). Those shows were quality.

Game over, man! Game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now, huh? What are we gonna do?

Still, if they do manage to get some genuine atmosphere going, and get a quality voice cast, some better character designs, improve the animation, and do away with a few of the stupider aspects ('Newbie'? Fuck. Off.), which is pretty much a total reboot, then you never know I guess. Still, nowhere near hopeful based on what I've seen so far.

Maybe we got 'em demoralized...

by Childe Roland
Feb 15th, 2007
03:47:07 PM
...at all. That was some seriously detailed stuff, even if it was somewhat stylized. This is more like Samurai Jack, but not even that detailed. It worked for Clone Wars because the character designs for Star Wars are pretty simplistic. The reason the aliens (and the marines) are so cool is the level of and attention to detail on each of them. Minimalizing it like this would be a mistake.

This looks awesome. I never knew why they didn't try to do an Aliens cartoon. We might actually get a mature and interesting look at the universe as has been hinted at by the movies for years. Personally the Dark Horse comics over time have come to mean ALIENS more than any AVP or AVP2 will. hopefully it just won't suck like Roughnecks did. (Though, I'll say, they went at least in an interesting direction with THAT show.)

... if Fox isn't involved, then what right do these people have to develop the material at all?

Between this and the GHOSTBUSTERS game fiasco recently, it's like everyone's forgotten the order of events when dealing with someone else's intellectual property. You have to get the rights first before you approach a network or try to pitch a game. It's just common sense.

Otherwise, all you can call this is really slick fanfiction.

Hicks (Paxton) had the best lines. I'm partial to this one too: I'm ready, man, check it out. I am the ultimate badass! State of the badass art! You do NOT want to f@#$ with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don't worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Whoa! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks... State of the badass art? Love it! Hey, an animated series can't be any worse than AVP. Best of the franchise (so far): 1) (Two-way tie) Alien, Aliens 3) Alien 3 4) Alien Resurrection. There are NO other Alien films. Whatever happened to resurrecting the ORIGINAL franchise? I heard about a script being developed in which the Aliens have successfully reached Earth and a war has ensued. Well, no more a war between men and maggots, but an extermination. Of course, the obvious question is how does one make such a foreign, macro-focused film relevant to modern moviegoers. And by relevant, I mean in more than just a sterile, action-intensive, mind-numbing popcorn movie kind of way. They could take a cue from Spielberg and focus on a micro event within those macro parameters, ala "War of the Worlds." Or, they could employ themes relevant today and obscure them through a sci-fi lens, ala "Battlestar Gallactica," which has used suicide bombings, election debacles, and trial without due process, amongst others, as devices to make the show feel more topical. Whatever they do, please stop making these hybrid films. I love the Alien franchise. I like the Predator franchise. But the two do NOT go hand in hand. Actually, come to think of it, there's a hybrid film I'd love to see, an Alien & Predator hand in hand in a rom-com (that's romantic comedy, to the uninitiated). Alien and Predator could catch a Broadway show. Then they could hit the town for some club dancing. Let's not forget the inter-species copulation... OK, I'm taking this to far. Time for this TB to end.
The problem with USA animation it seems
by Neo Zeed
Feb 15th, 2007

is that animators are only trained to draw kiddy stuff. So when it's time to do something hardcore with some realistic proportions (like Ninja Scroll)they're not used to the transition. Just farm out the animation out to Japan like back in the day with Real Ghostbusters, TF the movie, etc.

I would think they have every 'right' to develop some very limited material as a PITCH, but I agree with Mori...it seems like there's this new trend to put ideas based on copyrighted material out there in hopes of getting 'fan support' or something. Really assinine, if you ask me. If I was Fox, I'd say 'Hey, that's great. We're gonna do that, but not with you since you really can't do anything about it since you never had any rights to material to begin with."

Looking at the 'animated' footage, there's really nothing that screams 'Aliens' about this. If they were really serious about pitching it to Fox, they should've just developed it as a series ORIGINAL shorts, and then pitched it to Fox as 'Like this, but with 'Aliens'-type designs and characters. Right? No?

AVP2 is going to blow your dick off. It's REALLY coming together- and it's a guaranteed 100% R-Rated movie. It's also been adamantly argued and defended by the directors as a "return to the roots". The predators will 100% absolutely be the predators you remember from the originals. Eye flash, decent face, proper pred vision, heartbeat sounds, playback, old school armour, athletic etc etc.

I mean, looking at this talkback, obviously some people enjoyed this. And I'm not even criticizing the work itself. I'm all for animation that isn't for kids and that plays with some wild sci-fi or horror ideas.

I just think companies need to focus on actually... you know... securing the rights to things before they start pimping them to the public. Otherwise, I don't see much upside.

you are terribly concerned about the copyright, eh? is this because you think its a waste to develop something that may get our hopes up for something we will never see, or from the perspective of someone who thinks its a form of piracy... that may prevent corporate overlords from having 3 gargantuan homes, a fleet of cars, a personal jet, a yacht with a helicopter, etc etc, all obtained with no concern with art, but a terrible appetite for more money than one would ever need? right? right?

If it doesn't belong to you, then you have no right approaching a network to sell it. I'm not "concerned," per se. I just think it's ridiculous that these companies don't pin down the actual rights to the material before they start running around showing off the work they're doing.

Call me old-fashioned, I guess. You don't have to worship corporate greed to believe in intellectual property rights. Those same laws protect the little guy against getting ripped off, too.

The demo on their site isn't bad (directing, sound etc), but the character design is beyond horrible... which could be a sign of mind numbingly bad judgement and a desire to take the franchise into Rated-G land... which would really piss off a lot of people. Speaking as someone who works out here in La-La-Land, creative and intellectual property rights -- certainly now in the Internet and digital age -- have certainly become a slippery sloap to operate around business-wise, particularly when it comes to (1) someone trying to create, promote and protect their own intellectual property...VERSUS (2) someone who is trying to create a pitch around a particular property to get a project going or to drum up business for their company, say an animation or CGI firm...VERSUS (3) someone who is actually out pimping a property and making money off it illegally...VERSUS (4) the odd issue of "fan fiction" and whatnot, and what legal rights the general public should have to exercise their "fan-ness." Best example there: the people who wanted to run their own private STAR WARS pay sites or make short fan films to sell, which Lucasfilm starting going after like a shark smelling blood in the water. Frankly, if you're a creator these days, it's all one big legal mess.

Ultimately, I agree with Mori that if you are the creator of something (or the rights holder) you shouldn't have OTHER people out there spending lots of money to create overly elaborate things (like this animation clip) who then PUT IT OUT FOR PUBLIC CONSUMPTION WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION IN AN ATTEMPT TO DRUM UP BUSINESS FOR THEMSELVES OR MAKE MONEY FROM IT. That's the key point and seems an obvious no-no to anyone with an IQ higher than a carrot. That said, it seems to me that releasing this clip was rather lame on the part of this animation firm and seems it would constitute a violation of 20th Century Fox's rights.

Look, it's fun to be a geek and wonder what an ALIENS cartoon might look like, but let's be honest -- and I think I speak for creators everywhere when I say this -- none of us would want to see our personal creation borrowed without our consent (to be polite) or outright stolen and used against our will (to be more blunt) so that someone ELSE could make money from it.

On the flip side, speaking as someone whose done quite a bit of pitching, the notion of creating storyboards or digital paintings or an elaborate eye-catching AV short for a PRIVATE pitch meeting isn't uncommon at all. That's simply a tactic they teach you in Business School 101. Mori wrote "You have to get the rights first before you approach a network or try to pitch a game." That's a small debatable point and a very minor quibble -- I've found that's not necessarily true, least not from my experiences or people I've run into who are out pitching other things. Which brings us back to the core argument of intellectual rights and what someone should be allowed to do away from the actual creator or rights holder. Prior to going into pitch meetings these days, I've found that it's not uncommon for people to FIRST work up a kick-ass presentation -- that is, create all the things I rattled off above -- and THEN go into the meeting armed to the teeth, simply so they have a better shot at holding someone's attention. I'll accent this again with the disclaimer "from my experience", but in today's Hollywood no one wants to "hear" a pitch anymore. They'd rather "see" it to get an idea what the project might ultimately look like. That's becoming more and more common right from the first initial contact meeting. These days no one wants to spend a penny unless they absolutely, positively have to, so the more they can "see it", the more they're willing to listen to you. But again, that's just me speaking from my experiences...

I think the real issue here -- and this is where Moriarity was on target and I totally agree -- is that this ALIENS clip is no different than the GHOSTBUSTER video game clip that AICN recently posted. That is, where a company created a promotional pitch behind closed doors, but then purposefully went public with it FIRST rather than presenting it to the actual studio or rights holders. And let's not kid ourselves -- these ALIENS guys and those GHOSTBUSTERS guys made a conscious decision to do that. In both cases I'm sure they wanted it to seem like their project had accidentally "leaked" (wink, wink) through a private personal web site of someone involved (wink, wink).

In this case I'm sure they probably wanted someone at Fox to see it online and just as important hoped that same Fox person would also read some positive online buzz, all so that person would then run back to their boss and say "Hey, I saw this online and everyone was talking about it! We gotta bring these guys in!" To that end these guy are simply trying to do a calculated end-around the normal pitch process, trying to drum up support BEFORE they go in, as if that would make a difference to Fox. And frankly (in my opinion) that seems like a dumb miscalculation on their part since now Fox might be pretty damn mad that they released this without their permission OR this might have been a Hail Mary pass by the animation guys to drum up some buzz because -- unbeknownst to us -- behind the scenes Fox ALREADY passed on this, so basically they're desperately trying to revive the deal by getting some online buzz going.

All in all, I'm going to guess two things are now going to happen. (1) Pretty soon Fox is going to call AICN and tell you guys to pull down that link to show that they WON'T tolerate people putting out stuff that tramples on their intellectual property rights... and (2) Then they're going to call these guys up and tell them "Nice try, but you did it ass-backwards and pissed us off. So now don't bother calling us at all. We're not interested."

Or to be honest -- this being Hollywood, the capital city of "originality" (cough! cough!) -- these guys are likely to get a call from a grunty, low-level Fox attorney who will simply say, "Interesting idea about doing short ALIENS cartoons. Unfortunately for you...but what a coincidence for us!...we already had that exact same idea in development. So now that our asses are legally covered by me stating that to you, have a nice day." >CLICK!<

Joshua Oram - Do a Whois lookup and he's the guy, he's also the guy in the opening credits (speaking of credits, no credit to Ridley Scott? WTF?). Looks like he's a talented animator with an idea...a poorly written idea with the wrong style of animation for the material, but that's me. He's also got a MySpace page that doesn't burn my eyes out (unlike 99% of MySpace pages).

Style goes way beyond 'detailed' or 'simplified'. In this case, the latter _does_ mean childish. Even the Clone Wars designs looked way more mature than this, and that was for a franchise that isn't half as dark as Aliens. Everything mentioned in, or linked from, the original article is shit. Plain and simple. The updated designs on the guy's blog are much better but the alien still looks like jelly. He needs to stop trying to wow everybody with his l33t sk8erboy graffiti efforts and think about what style might _actually_ suit Aliens.

the third movie was awesome, drastically expanding on the vision of the universe that had basically consisted entirely of military spaceship and space station interiors in the first two flicks.... It had whole new cultural elements that made it feel far more expansive and renewed my interest... too bad number four was so godawfully weird. -BUNGER!!!

Sorry, but the whole "Jarhead" theme is getting incredibly old. It worked for James Cameron in ALIENS, but I have to wonder why everyone thinks this is the only/best way to go for this series. There are a number of much better places one can take this to.

this creating and then releasing without rights is Robert Rodriquez. now I loved Sin City and I know he had Frank Miller's cooperation. But didn't he do the same thing, just not so public, but then told everyone how he got Frank Miller and Bruce Willies, et al on board was by producing the opening "short" (with Josh Hartnett) adn then finding these people adn showing it to them on his laptop. Great it's an awesome marketing and pitch way of doing things, but then he goes out and spreads the word about how he did this has got people all over putting it online hoping for the same success

At first the idea of doing animated shorts didn't seem horrible per se, though I'd agree with everyone that this sample style is TOTALLY wrong. It's waaaaay too cute and friendly which obviously kills the whole point of it BEING Aliens.

That said, Mr Incredible put the final nail in the coffin for me. Because let's face it, once they did ALIENS as a cartoon -- and you just know they'd dumb it down by saying "But it's a cartoon! We want toys too! We HAVE to aim it at kids!" -- how far behind would the mass marketing of things like ALIENS: THE CEREAL really be? Even just joking, Mr Incredible's dead on target about that one. And I have to say, once I saw that box sitting on the grocery store shelf, complete with a cute cartoon Alien on the front leaping in the air or it's cute cartoon tail wrapped around the logo ("Fortified with egg-shaped marshamallows!") another part of my movie geekness would instantly curl up and die.

Of course the image of Cameron sitting at an early morning AVATAR production meeting, going over some notes and lost in thought, mindlessly reaching over to pour himself another bowl of ALIENS cereal sort of cracks me up and is now stuck in my head...

In the music/remix biz, it's kind of the opposite. You do a mash-up of tunes to which you have no right whatsoever, it becomes an underground hit, and then the record company in a lot of cases takes an interest (in a good way) and asks for more.

"and you just know they'd dumb it down by saying 'But it's a cartoon! We want toys too! We HAVE to aim it at kids!'" There already were Alien toys several years ago. A whole line of Xenomorphs and Colonial Marines. It was kind of weird too because if I remember correctly it was in between Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection and so it was kind of randomly that were Alien toys on the market, but there they were and so were the commercials that aired during Saturday Morning Cartoons.

You do know this is how things are pitched ALL THE TIME. While producing on JOHN CARTER - we had folks bringing everything from DVD test menu screens and mini-documentaries, to Video Game pitches, to yes, even an animated show test. Oh and toys, coloring books - all sorts of things. It's called hustling and being proactive. Like the guy that did the CG Hellboy test... who impressed Guillermo Del Toro - and is now working with a team on doing a CG hellboy toon thing. That was individual initiative kicking ass. LIKE - the guy who made TROOPS - who has been hired by LUCASFILM to do work for them.

Just the other day I asked Moriarty about another project (curisously also Alien related) on another talkback and from what I understood he was pretty clear about it. No point on wasting articles on non-official stuff. And now this article comes out. I'd like to know, what the hell makes this project so different that it deserves a mention while the other one (not gonna mention it) didn't? Both have a team behind it. Both have soemthing to show for. Both are trying to get Fox's attention. And neither of them is official. So again, what makes this one so different? Because it has a "company" behind it? Please...

Y'think?

The operative part that you seem to be overlooking is that they were bringing the presentations to you... the people actually in control of the property.

The difference is that these guys are talking about having pitched a network before talking to Fox. That is... oh, what's the word I'm looking for... fucking retarded.

Please, big guy... don't act like I don't understand the basics of how to put a deal together. I know people put together presentation reels and artwork and all sorts of lovely things. But unless you're approaching the people who can give you permission to actually proceed, it all seems fucking ridiculous to me.

Did I post this story?

Nope.

Do I think there's any difference between this and someone trying to get me to pimp their ALIEN fanscript?

Nope.

Merrick posted this because he enjoyed the effort these guys put into this presentation. That's cool. That's his choice as an editor.

Personally, I've got little patience with fan-generated material that's based on someone else's intellectual property. It seems to me that we've created a generation that only knows how to regurgitate. I would much rather see someone put their time and effort into creating their own SF world to play in.

So it's not a contradiction. I feel exactly the same way, only now you've actually tried to embarrass me into discussing this fucking ALIEN PLANET thing twice. Keep it up. I'm sure I'll get much more interested the more you follow me around in various talkbacks and act like a cock about it.

The Cartoon Network will have to and make room between Looney Toon reruns, Pee-Playhouse reruns, tweenage anime, limited animation about talking french fries, and bad Robert Smigel ripoffs. There could be animators already creating these worlds, and could be shown on Adult Swim. Too bad their idea of an adult is 9 years old.

I hate stuff like this. Everyone was sucking off the guy who made "Batman: Dead End." That guy stole characters and entire soundtracks from three seperate franchises, and he gets praised for it! Moriarty has a point... stop regurgitating and start doing something original. That's how the Samurai Jack guys started, before they were offered (and I stress OFFERED) Clone Wars. And that's how Chris Nolan started, before he got to direct his Batman film.

Huh? No. No, no, no. I repeat: NO. Clone Wars was not created in Flash. Clone Wars was traditional, 2D animation with a little help from computer generated imagery. Is this really even worth posting about? I honestly don't give a damn if some awesome animation artists want to try their hand at an Aliens-brand cartoon like Moriarty clearly does (because, frankly, it would be cool if something like that would officially happen), but this shit was just...I'm sorry, but the only word that comes to mind is RANK.

"Lil Aliens" is brilliant thank you!

This whole idea is horrible. Everything cool in that animation was just ripped off from Cameron's Aliens. And the concept is flawed. This is a controlled area where they are just doing training? Then there is NO STORY. And for the love of God, did I really just see a Colonial Marine shoot his gun and go flying backwards?! Bluefields Creative, please change your company name to Bluefields UNcreative, it would be more fitting.
