No. Why would I review a fan script? There are dozens of them written every year. They're fun to write and read for some people, I'm sure, but there's no chance I'll be reviewing someone's ALIEN script here on the site. I'm guessing you're the author, too, since I've never mentioned the fan script anywhere and never indicated that I had any intention of writing about it.

That's a very narrow interpretation of 'parody'
by Franklin T Marmoset
Feb 12th, 2007
08:26:21 AM
but I accept your point. I've always thought of Pegg and Wright's stuff as being 'affectionate parodies', by which I mean ridicule is not their intention. But if you're taking your structure and inspiration from another source and replaying it for laughs, you're pretty much doing a parody.

Thanks for the review, Mr McWeeney. I'm looking forward to this one quite a bit.

Parody

09:23:44 AM
Sorry, Mori, but what you described isn't parody, it's a spoof. Monty Python are parodists, the original Harvard Lampoon were parodists, the original ZAZ films walked a fine line between the parody and spoof. I'm not taking you to task but I'm just getting pissed off that people call crap like Epic Movie a parody because it's not. A parody has purpose and a punchline where Epic Movie simply has the "I recognize it" scene that you talk about with no purpose other than recognition.

99.9%? 99.95%? Listen, if you want to review films, great. We appreciate it. And if you want to accept advertising, fantastic. You've built a nice little website here and you totally deserve to make money from it. But to print review after glowing review of a film and then plaster your site with their banner ads just screams "conflict of interest". Hey, I could be wrong. Maybe you haven't made a dime from this film. But if you have, you should consider how it looks. Unless you really don't care. Which I'd actually respect.

Third Act Spoiler Guess

Feb 12th, 2007
06:04:15 PM
***Massive Potential Spoiler if Correct*** I'm hesitant to add this, but I feel it's because I "get" cop/thriller movies so much that this is painfully obvious - I think the third act twist that Mori alludes to is probably that Nick Frost IS the killer.

But I think what happens is that when you aren't thinking of the potential twist in the plot, you won't see it. Once you know there may be a supposed "twist" there are few options left in the convention of a mainstream production. Now if this was Sundance, it would simply turn out that Nick Frost is actually a teenage woman with pearly white chompers in her snatch!

ANT-MAN should come before SCOTT PILGRIM
by Ribbons
Feb 12th, 2007
08:43:46 PM
Not because I prefer 'Ant-Man,' but because, unless 'Hot Fuzz' does gangbusters at the box office, it's going to be difficult for Wright to drum up as much money for a Scott Pilgrim film as is (probably) necessary. Marvel currently has reservoirs of cash as a result of their deal with Paramount that they'll bestow upon the directors of their films. I think 'Scott Pilgrim''s best chance of getting made right is getting made after 'Ant-Man.'

Have you even read Scott P? To do the project any justice, they'll have to cast unknowns, and film it in Toronto. If they can't bring that in with a budget of, oh, let's say $15million, and that's a highball estimate, 'cuz really, aside from one or two fight scenes and the location shooting, there shouldn't be much if anything in the way of expenses.

And how much does it cost to film in Canada anyway, eh? Couple of toonies and a keg of Molson's might just cover the overhead...

by JonQuixote
Feb 14th, 2007
12:40:38 AM
...but I agree that it's probably incorrectly applied to SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Other than the title, I don't think there's a lot of humor in that movie that comes from mocking horror or zombie films. EPIC MOVIE, however, is parody. Just (presumably) bad parody (as most spoofs are). Parody in this context means you're getting humor from imitation, but it doesn't necessarily have to be smart or otherwise purposeful. *** Anyway, enough semantics - I'm looking forward to this one. I didn't like SHAUN all that much, but I liked what it tried to do. Just the extremely gory and depressing turns near the end were too tonally jarring for me. Major buzz kill. Hopefully, HOT FUZZ recognizes and improves on the formula.

Probably the funniest film I've ever seen at the flicks. The only disappointing bit was the car chase from Somerfield to the Model Village, which could have done with less frenetic editing (I like my car chases old-school style). The foot chases, punch-ups and shoot-outs were fantastic though. This will have the honour of being the first film I'll ever see more than once at the cinema, I literally can't wait to see it again. Trust me, Nick Frost's popularity will go stratospheric after this!

Sorry but just caught the film tonight. Loved 'Space' and Thought 'SOTD' was a good attempt at combining comedy with real horror but 'Hot Fuss' just fails on almost every level for me. From the plodding beginning, the joke free/plot free middle, and ridiculously stretched ending. there are around four or five laugh out loud moments dotted around the film but that that just doesn't cut it for a 'comedy'. In fact I thought the humour was actually obvious and sterile. I almost walked out but stuck it out until the end desperately hoping that the film would come to life...it didn't. The film seems to be getting some pretty shitty reviews over here (UK)so I know it's not just me. The film doesn't so much pay homage to the action genre than ram it down your throat, they even mention 'Bad Boys 2'and 'Point Break' around fifty times as well as have the two main characters watch both films then copy scenes directly from both films. In short i thought it was a lame effort with weak gags, weak characterisations, and a paper thin plot. Shit.

Sad news friends. Saw the movie last night and it was a crushing disapointment. Its had good reviews in the UK press all week, I saw it in a packed cinema with three pints inside me and a group of mates - I love SOTD and Spaced - what could go wrong? Answer - no jokes. I laughed once in two hours. That makes a loooong 2 hours. The talk in the bar afterwards was of sadness at a wasted opportunity. AICN has seriously overhyped this - I cant believe Moriarty wanted to watch it twice. I won't watch it again.

I have just come back from Hot fuzz and I thought it was a very entertaning and very funny movie. I thought it was outstanding but others may differ. Nick angel(simon pegg) is too good for the london police so he is sent to sleepy hamlet of SandFord which has no murders only accidents. This is midsomer murders territory, to qoute Simon pegg during last week to describe the movie its like Midsomer Murders as directed by tony scott. Angel meets the locals including the villain of the piece Simon Skinner(Timothy Dalton). no sooner has he arrived, then some locals keep getting bumped off and for the rest of the movie Angel tries to get to the bottom whay there are no murders only accidents. Edgar wright likes repition, even in shaun of the dead it was there in the scene shaun lays out how he is going to resuce his mom, the scene is repeated more then once. In fuzz, I lost count of the times that shaun opened and closed his locker. The repition device will get annoying as will Wrights trick of racheting up the action in the last half of the film, that happened in shaun of the dead also and I agree with the writer who said that shaun had a great first and Wright jettisoned the homour for action packed final hour. With a bigger budget Wright and pegg can go all the way and with some studio largesse, wright and pegg will make a film in which they wont have to worry about trying to cram to much in becuase currently that is their weakness. I enjoyed this film very much and will never look at the bill the same way again. Supergrass fans, you neednt worry, the song that plays over the ending credits, youve guessed it Caught by the fuzz. Did anyone else notice the homoeroctic thing between angel and butterman. Excellent movie. Dalton makes a great villain. This is a very funny film. I loved the little peices. they made the movie in mind.

for me between SOTD and Hot Fuzz is that in SOTD Simon Pegg and Nick Frosts characters are so much better developed and unique to the Zombie genre. Two wasters take on the living dead. In Hot Fuzz the characters are cardboard cut outs of other characters in the action/comedy genre, and badly developed in a way that made me not care a toss about them.

Frost and Pegg? The mob is fickle and so far things are going his way but the mob can turn and when it does things can get ugly. I think wright has the chops to do action movies and be a really great action filmmaker, he just has to write movies with that balance and it is hard to do but I think he can do it. Dalton was the best thing in Hot fuzz. I loved the way he didnt even prented not to be villianous. Wright also needs to slow his pace down a little. I didnt find the movie long at all in fact it flew by.

I loved Shaun of the Dead and I though this was far better. I usually get fidgety during long films but this seemed much shorter than it's running time. Edgar Wright's film pacing has improved a lot since "Shaun". Nick Frost plays a much more likeable character in this, Pegg does a suprisingly convincing job of playing a tough cop and the supporting cast is of incredibly high calibre. Pegg and Frost's relationship in the film is far better than in "Shaun". I found the character Ed annoying and couldn't see why Shaun would put up with him, In Hot Fuzz the way that Nick Angel grows from seeing Danny as an annoyance to a good friend was well handled. The only thing that Shaun really does better is that it's more immediately quoteable than Hot Fuzz (though I expect to hear lot's of "Yarp", "Narp" and "By the power of greyskull" in the near future). Can't wait to see it again.

the guy in the Yellow pages is NOT Paddy Considine - do you seriously think he needs to do shit like that?! The guy in the ads is the annoying James Nesbitt - star of many rubbish TV shows hence the need for advert work. By the way, Hot Fuzz was great. I now love Paddy Considine even more than I did! The gang do a great job once again and while I'm not gonna say it's a five star film, it is a bloody good one. Good work!
If you think Paddy Considin was good in this

Watch him in Dead man Shoes. That is antonishing performance. Just unbelievable. Scary. creepy chilling. James Nesbitt is annoying his tenure as host of the the terrible IFTAS was cringe inducingly bad. mind you nesbitt had to work from a script by a really unfunny Irish Journalist and Youre a star judge called Brendan O Connor.

This movie is soooo over rated. It just isn't funny enough by a mile. It's the COMIC STRIP '07 nothing more and a lot less funny.
Opinion is divided then

I saw it the night before last in a group of four. Two of us loved it, one didn't care for it at all and my mate's brother's girlfriend offered no opinion. In fact, she said fuck all over the course of the entire evening. She may have been a waxwork dummy operated through a system of pulleys and string in order that my mate's brother could give the impression to my mate that he was sexually successful and therefore less of a failure in the eyes of his family. That's just a hypothesis though. Note: it is not a theory, it is a hypothesis. If more people could tell the difference between a theory and a hypothesis then all those Creationist fuckwits in the States would get a great deal less airtime. Mind you, she could have been plaster rather than wax. Or maybe painted papier mache applied over a chicken wire frame. There are many possibilities.
Saw it today, it wasn't that good, sorry...

VASTLY inferior to Shaun of the Dead. Only a few funny moments. The over-the-top violence was edited too quick and choppy, made it hard to follow the action. As another TB'er mentioned, it's getting lousy reviews in the UK. No wonder it's only getting a limited release here in the US. Better luck next time, guys!

Channel 4: "a British film that is both blisteringly funny and genuinely action-packed." Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian: "Plenty of irrepressible fun ... and big, regular laughs". Philip French in the Guardian: "Funny, inventive, furiously paced." Radio Times: **** out of *****. Empire: **** out of *****. Daily Telegraph: "mostly it's a smart, funny, affectionate love letter to all things uncool - and far more skilful than its self-effacing humour suggests." Total Film *** our of *****. BBC: **** out of *****. The Times: **** out of *****. Film 2007: "Authentically cinematic, stuffed with good jokes and full of incidental pleasures - particularly for diehard film buffs - don't miss the all-action 'Hot Fuzz'." Shit, they must have been gutted when they read those.

Daily Mail: "It's the lack of any serious intent that means too much of it is desperately unamusing, and unamusingly desperate." Daily Telegraph: "It's overlong, and finally falls apart, stuttering towards a number of indecisive endings." This is London: "Wright and Pegg's second film isn't as good as their first." Time Out: "It’s not a perfect template – running motifs are glaringly flagged up and there are at least two too many climaxes" Variety: "in its final reels, it doesn't know when to quit. Pic could easily lose 15 minutes from its two-hour running time." -- Better luck next time, guys!
