The world is different now.
by TheNorthlander

Carpenter's film had a strong emotional impact when it was made because it broke new ground instead of following in the footsteps of hundreds of similar movies, like Zombie's remake will do. When Myers sits up after being stabbed in the neck it's shocking because That's Not What He Was Expected To Do. Let Zombie do his thing, because if he did Carpenter's movie all over again it wouldn't work today. Why? Because the world is different now.

Okay, I like the character of Michael Meyers, but calling any of the films classics or perfect I would never do. I always wanted to see a Halloween film that I could just love, and I still feel this might be it. Malcolm McDowell, and The Shanter Mask, that is just too cool. I'm excited, and look sorward to seeing it. I loved Devil's Rejects, and if he could improve on that I would love Halloween. I may not be a huge fan of Rob's music, but I loved his movies. I've got his back on this one.

I respect the guy for wanting to do something different, because a rehash of the original would be an utter waste of time. That said, over explaining the villain just seems like a terrible mistake. I hope he can pull it off, though, because Halloween is one of the few horrors I really love, and I liked Devils Rejects quite a bit.

How about we don't complain and let him do what he wants with the license? I love Halloween more so than half the people complaining and would like to see something NEW done that MAY not suck. After all, everything after the first film blows. Rob Zombie has my blessing and I trust him to do something fairly good. *fingers crossed* Good luck dude!

when the audience for a re-make are not the people who like the original. Why even bother calling it a remake? The current trend for torture horror seems to be more about the film maker than the films. i.e they want you to be shocked at how sick they are and if you can't take it they win. Maybe, I really am too old for this shit.

but this is my first post, and I'm not trying to be insulting to anyone, including Rob Zombie. The big problem that I have with the remake isn't that he's not doing it exactly like the original, I agree that would be pointless. The problem I have is that he is taking the story and making it like every other serial killer movie ever made. It could be good, but I'm quite skeptical about giving my favorite killer a serial killer child upbringing that includes the cliched child abuse. To me the reason it was scary is because he was just plain evil, no childhood to take the blame for his actions. I like some of the other ideas Rob has, but having him speak? I really cannot imagine him saying anything cooler than the breathing sound we are all used to. I really do hope this turns out good, cause I'm sure I'll end up tossing up some cash to see it.

To remake excellent movies. Why not remake shitty flicks, or flicks that *almost* worked? There's no reason to remake "Halloween," plain and simple. No matter how good this movie might be, it will never be more than extraneous.

that Zombie's fanboys and girls only see 2 options:A complete rehash of the original or Zombie's version? There are countless directions one could go in if one were willing to actually use a little imagination.Granted, thats a little too much to ask from a hack who's previous films were just scenes, character names, and camera set ups lifted from other movies with dialog that sounds like it was written by Quentin Tarantino's retarded, inbred brother hopped up on oxycontin(hillbilly heroin, but you Zombie fans already know that).Does anyone really honestly think this piss poor script would be getting the love that it is if it were from anyone else?Seriously. What qualifies Zombie to tackle a remake of one of the greatest and most important horror films of the modern era?Who are the ad wizards who came up with this one?No matter what you think of his previous movies, was there even ONE good scare in either of them? There sure as hell wasn't anything ORIGINAL.Go ahead you apologetic sycophants, call them homages. But until he comes up with, at the very LEAST, one original idea he's a fucking HACK.

I just don't get the need to remake a classic movie. Maybe Rob thought that if he didn't accept the offer, some pinhead would have and ruined it, for real. Either way, updating Halloween like this is like if someone gave a remake assignment of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" to Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller. Sure, it might be okay ... but why? Why even try to compete with the original? I'm not saying Zombie doesn't have horror-chops. He does. "Rejects" was fucking awesome.

I'm in agreement with the Mori and Quint, though ... there's no need to remake this film. Just make something else, dude.

Clearly, Rob Zombie isn't a confident filmmaker...
by Kraken
Feb 9th, 2007
12:43:34 PM
Because it takes a lot of confidence to be able to take criticism (and I mean true constructive criticism, not insults, anyone will get pissed at that) and use it (or not) to give yourself another perspective on what you're doing. If you're a confident filmmaker, then you can let that sort of thing roll off your back and chalk it up to a difference in taste. But I have a feeling that Zombie doesn't have this kind of confidence considering how he's reacted to all the criticisms of his script, which I equate to an angry child. I like the advice my mother gave me once when I turned 18 - "now that you're an adult, you don't always have to do what I say... but it'd be nice if you still listened every once in a while... even if you don't agree or take the advice... at least listen." and if you don't like that... how about "if five people tell you you're drunk... sit down." I wish Zombie the best, I don't ever want to see a bad horror movie, especially a HALLOWEEN film. I just hope Zombie doesn't use up all the points he made with the horror fans, by making "Rejects" so interesting, on this movie. Here's hoping he shoves it in all of our faces in October and we're eating crow (or chocolate ice cream). Just remember, making something more XTREME doesn't always make it better... Just ask Bugs Bunny.

Umm ... did you text this message in, Phoenixmagi? And for Captain Mal, who defines horror? I deem Devil's Rejects as a horror flick. If you went into Blockbuster, you'd find it right alongside Exorcist, The Fog Nightmare on Elm Street. The Hitcher is a road movie, too, in a way, so ... bah, whatever. It make no sense to argue over classifications.

There's no point in remaking the classics. Period. The same with PJ's King Kong, the same with every other remake. It's just silly.

I don't define "Devil's Rejects" as horror, because the killers are the protagonists. Neither the viewer nor the protagonist is being haunted or hunted by anything horrific. Instead, we follow the exploits of a nasty group of characters, and watch them murder people. Meanwhile, Zombie attempts to redefine them as some kind of folk anti-heroes. Sound familiar? It should, but I don't know anyone who would define "Natural Born Killers" as a horror movie, do you?

...fangoria's review was pretty positive, The Dread Central review really liked it and Mr. D from Bloody-Disgusting is defending it. But what do they know? They're only die hard horror geeks.... Either way, I'm waiting for a trailer before any judgements are made. Should this movie be remade? Probably not. Should there be another sequel like "Ressurection", "H20", "Curse of" or 5? Defintiely not. Zombie has talent. He knows the genre and has style. Seeing his name in the credits is better than say Rick Rosenthal or Dwight Little. Would I prefer a sequel by him rather than a full ahead reimagining? Probably. But a reimagining is what we're getting so we should hope for the best. The mask looks awesome and the Myers house (pics up on BD) looks fantastic (and is two doors down from the original). Why do people pray for this movie to suck? Its like geek self flagellation. Just shut the fuck up until there's come footage...or you've seen it.

You can't improve on Carpenter... don't even try, bitches. Although Rob Zombie is a decent film-maker. 1000 CORPSES sucked mouldy ass, but DEVIL'S REJECTS... a good movie.
