(thank you Xbox 360, XBL, and a 720p projector--110", baby)

And I was quite impressed. The visual style of the widescreen effects shots (I got Trouble with Tribbles) is quite impressive, and the old film is cleaned up nicely as well. I do believe I'll be picking up Doomsday as soon as it's available for download. I've been waiting to see what they did with it since the early fan shots of the re-made Machine.

Never seen an episode.

They're doing a great job with these digitalized effects. Can't wait to see how the rest of them turn out.

... if there are plans to eventually release these revised episodes in a new DVD boxed set of some kind? Because, as much as I loathe the sort of revisions George Lucas made to STAR WARS 4-6, I gotta admit -- these enhancements are gorgeous and truly exciting to see. Makes me want to revisit ST:TOS for the first time in more than a decade. Ideally, I'd love boxed seasons, with each episode available in its original form AND in the retouched version on the same disks. Terrific work, obviously undertaken by people with true love for the original series. It's nice to see.

it's a rather nice reworking of the Doomsday Machine - cool. Now if they only care like this about the new Star Trek movie. Live in hope (but not holding breath).
I always thought the ship designs looked stupid

From a practical standpoint, who would design a ship that looks like that? That's always been one of the reasons why I could never really get into Trek. The ships look like they were designed by children. The only passable ship design has to be the Klingon bird of prey but I'd rather pilot an X-Wing or the Millenium Falcon an day.

Hey, Bill could use the CGI to fix up "Final Frontier" more to his vision! Like enhancing the Rock Monster scene. Today it probably could cost $300,000 just to add 20 of them using CGI.

what's wrong with the design? They're in space, and have no need to be aerodynamic. And although the Star Fleet ships come in all manner of configurations, the basics that they all stick to are the two Warp nacelles (insert technobabble for why their need to be two of them, why they have to be cigar-shaped, and why they have to be parallel and forward facing) which are seperated from the main body of the ship presumably to make things safer for the crew, and the saucer section, which offers a full 360 degree view and aiming range in three axes. This makes a lot of sense for the defensive and protective ethos of the Federation. The agressive, forward aiming configuration of the Klingon Bird of Prey is more appropriate for their propensity for attacking things.
Thanks, Robogeek...

...is total late 60's. So really, anyone who's first experience with sci-fi is STAR WARS or above will most likely see the classic Enterprise as sorta silly looking. Which is A-OK. I saw Trek shortly before I saw Star Wars (yes, in the theater first day...I am old), so the Enterprise will always look cool to me as much as the ol' Falcon and X-Wing. Though, I'd be flying that bad-ass known as the Y-Wing if I had any choice. Or a Blockade Runner (the original Falcon). The Enterprise always felt like a ship at sea (lumbering, yet powerful), where the Star Wars vessels felt like aircraft (fast and maneuverable). Hence, Star Trek was a voyage and Star Wars was a...well, a war. So no fault to anyone feeling a fetish to whichever they enjoy.

Fashion goes in and out of style over the generations. What's old is new again for a new generation. TOS is set during a time period when there's a resurgence of '60s era style, design and fashion sense. TNG is set during a late '80s/early '90s revival.
I think it's going to be HD or Blue Ray sets.

I had a great time in Norfolk last summer at the Bayou Boogaloo where my boys the Subdudes were featured performers. Hell, last weekend my wife & I enjoyed a great weekend getaway at the Fairfield Resort in Williamsburg along with our gym rat friends. However, when I move back down south it will be back home to the Bluegrass...where TREK is back on WAVE-3, where it belongs. I only wish it was on at 11 am on Sunday mornings like back in the day. Yep, nothing like a little "Meet the Press" and then "Space Church". Ya feel me, mistah?

My only real complaint about the ship design of Enterprise (in just about every series) is the bridge location...right on top of the saucer! You might as well paint it red so your attackers know where to kill the command-level officers! I think someone finally did blow the Bridge off in an 'Alternate Reality' Episode of Enterprise! Lursa and Betor had the right idea in Generations, but they suffered from the "Dear in the Headlights" syndrome when they lost their shields.

Hey there, Kentucky Colonel! Glad to see a fellow Louisvillian remembers WAVE from back in the day. Anyway, in DC, remastered Star Trek comes on WDCA (the "MyNetworkWhatever" station) on the weekends. Only there's no set time, so ya gotta check listings. I guess in case it interferes with one of those "MyNetwork" soaps or whatever.

by BendersShinyAss
Feb 9th, 2007

they're fucking awesome. very 60's yes. but when the 80's came along they made them look REALLY cool. And the 90's gave us the galaxy class star ship, which looks kinda strange at first but damn i wish they had of kept it for a few more next gen films.

take a long hard look at the ship inspection of the first motion(less) picture. It's fucking beautiful

Actually they where not designed by kids
by Falcon5768
Feb 10th, 2007
05:05:16 PM
The ships actually are designed on a lot of practical reasoning. Jefferies designed the ships with the idea that the engines would be so powerful, they needed to be as far from the ship as possible, and that it wasnt going to look like the standard flying saucer which was all over the place during the mid-late 60's. In fact people like to make fun of the aerodynamics of the Enterprise, when it's actually a very stable design, and can fly on its own power without needing wings (the saucer providing enough lift to keep the ship up) Not that you know it matters in space.

close ups of the Constellation
by faelon
Feb 11th, 2007
12:05:56 AM
The reason we never saw any close shots of the Constellation in the original episode was simple. The Connie wasn't a redressed Enterprise model. It was basically just an off the shelf MPC plastic "Enterprise" model kit . As a result it was only about 20" long. Way too small and detail poor for any closer shots. They used the retail model kits a few other times in the later episodes.

That was really good, but it's so annoying watching the broadcast version. Growing up like I did on TOS I know every line, and scene that has been cut to make more time for commercials. I barely stand the crappy picture from Satellite Television. Yea, the picture from Dish Networks standard def broadcast is so blurry It's almost unwatchable. I really Doubt Direct TV is any better. I get a big laugh when the satellite people go out and claim that their picture is as clear a quality as DVD; that's complete bull$#!t!!! It's gonna be great one day to finally see these on a big screen unedited, and on either HD-DVD or Blue Ray.
