When I first watched "Balance of Terror," The OTHER great instersteller ship to ship battle in the series, I was depressed that the effect was so underdone. just a big "Meh" from me. So I tuned out. Now, I've been seeing your reports of the redone work, and lately it seems the work is much better. I should check some of these out. Is there a diffinitive point where the work went from "meh" to "Wow!" ? I wanna see! Better crack out my debit card and pull these off itunes...

Of course, the question - and I'm sure it's already been posed - is by having done any kind of effects updating, have they gotten too radical? I've seen some episodes of the newly updated show and they look good. They're a clean updating that respect the look of the series without having to add CGI to damn near every scene. But as pretty and subdued as it looks, I have to question its necessity. Some have complained that this is another marketing ploy to sell more DVDs, and sadly, they're probably right. The thing is, do these changes really improve the show, and who exactly was asking for this to be done in the first place? I guess it'll simply come down to either people will buy the new updates or they won't. It's just a bit annoying when everything, even old "Star Trek" episodes, get updated to more modern special effects. It was an interesting novelty back when George Lucas first did it was "Star Wars," but I feel enough is enough.

The scale is fine, considering it is a perception shot, with the Enterprise near the camera and the machine far away, the scale is fine. You do not know how far away the Giant Enemy Space Turd is. Maybe if the Enterprise attacks it's weak point it can get maximum damage.

first of all, this is not to squeeze $$$ out of the franchise. these are being shown on syndication for free. it was done because they got the Trek license away from Cable and they wanted to update the episodes in HD, and they decided to do it "deluxe." In the meantime, the guys doing this are total lovers of the material. You can argue that it wasn't necessary or that its not being done as well as it could have been (either of which are possible), but their motives here are the last thing that should be questioned. and unlike Star Wars, where they went all out then with the effects and are now just redoing them for the hell of it, Star Trek had such a low budget that the effects shots were the same every damn week! This show had it coming!

I like the new damaged ship. Although they could have remastered the NCC number so it matched Enterprise (as many people think it should have). The original version of the Constellation looked liked the Enterprise Model with some minor "damage" - much better now.

Not with the Enterprise vs the turd but with the shuttlecraft and the Enterprise. The shuttlecraft and shuttle bay is way too big. And for the twats whining about these changes, I think they did a great job in preserving the suckiness of the design and FX while making them a little crisper. I mean a scant 7 years after Trek they started on Star Wars. The Trek people could have done a lot better. A little facelift is a good thing.

If you look, you'll see that the shuttle craft is only slightly smaller in size than the aft end of the Enterprise itself. Figuring that a shuttlecraft is roughly the size of a humvee, that means that the fuselage of the Enterprise is about 12 humvees long, and if you are assigned to a station somewhere in the saucer section, you can't stand up to do your job. Are you sure this isn't a youtube fanfic?

Am I the only one annoyed and a little disturbed by this CGI "remastering"? I think it's a blatant milking of a cash cow. Of course they're gonna say this is what Roddenberry wanted and it's done with "respect". Wouldn't true respect consist of leaving it alone? This seems like the start of a slippery slope that could lead to "remastering" of countless other works whoose original creative teams aren't around to have any say. It seems 1984ish to me.

RKDN you are probably right about the shuttle scale making the rest of the Enterprise look a bit small, but it was like that in the original too, the size of the new shuttle relative to the new shuttlebay doors matches the old one. So I think they got it right inasmuch as it is true to the original. I think that was the nerdiest thing I've ever typed!

This episode, which I saw first run on NBC as a teenager, had always been a favorite of mine. William Windom was awesome in this. His reading of the line I used for the subject is perfect. (for the dim or chemically challenged, it's in the scene where he's telling how he beamed his crew off the damaged Constellation to the "5th planet" and Kirk says "there is no 5th planet") The only things I wished were better were the Constellation and the Machine. From these pics, it's appears they got it just about right. So far, I'm not unhappy with any of the cleaned up stuff. And I am convinced that Roddenberry would have loved to have done this back in the day and almost certainly wouldn't be unhappy with what is being done now. If you are some kind of "purist", that's your deal. This is nothing like Star Wars...they didn't give Spock a 3rd eye or Kirk a bigger crotch bulge, etc. They are not changing dialogue, story, etc. The visual work doesn't alter the story. Should they have not restored Lawrence of Arabia? Lost Horizon? I know none of this ST material was "lost" or damaged, but is 40 years old and was shot on a cheap budget. The tiny things they're doing only enhances, it does not detract. IMHO.

except for TMP and TWOK the others always felt like oversized episodes and failed to feel cinematic - especially the last two. TWOK drew on a great episode and villain and it worked great. There's too much in the way of loose ends that should've been explored in subsequent movies while they had time. CGI anyone?

In the restorations of Lawrence of Arabia, Lost Horizon, Touch of Evil, or any number of old films that have been spiffed up recently, they weren't adding new material. They cleaned up only what was in existence and weren't making any new artistic choices for how things looked (All be it with Touch of Evil they tweaked sound based on extensive notes from Wells) There's a difference between adding stills from a lost scene [Example:Lost Horizon] and shooting new stuff from scratch. Let me ask this: Who thinks they should have cut the black and white Spider Pit sequence Peter Jackson did into the DVD release of the original 1933 King Kong last year instead of putting it on the second bonus disc? Should anyone be allowed to put new stuff into an old work, whoose orginal primary creators are deceased, just because they think it looks cool and can sell?

The hanger deck of the Enterprise is nearly 2/3 of the secondary hull - no living quarters, but a botanical garden, deuterium storage, deflector array, shuttle storage and equipment and a bowling alley. The screen shot is called perspective foreshortening. OK, I've gotten past my geek attack. Yeesh.

Dave: When Gene passed away and his estate requested that all memos and paperwork from the Original Series through TNG be turned over, I was the person whose job it was to wade through 27 years of material. One theme that popped up with some regularity in Gene's memos was "What can we do to improve the visual effects?" While that alone isn't an answer, the support the Roddenberry family and people like Bob Justman have shown during this project really reinforces the notion that Gene was always striving to improve the effects to help bring the world of Star Trek alive. We're honored to help fulfill that wish.

The visual style of the widescreen effects shots (I got Trouble with Tribbles) is quite impressive, and the old film is cleaned up nicely as well. I do believe I'll be picking up Doomsday as soon as it's available for download.

Oh, man...when I first saw the Constellation's hull in that first remastered shot...it brought tears to my eyes. I just sat there staring at the screen with my hand over my mouth which was hanging wide open, by the way. Way cooler than I had ever dreamed. Geek City. My 9 year old Original Series fan son is drooling over the prospect of watching this one...so am I for that matter.
